What!?!? Good Thai food East of Sac?! I was working in the Auburn area today and couldn't stand to do another sandwich lunch...all I wanted was a nice plate of pad thai! So I drove around downtown and stumbled upon this fancy little place. The initial walk-in authenticity decor and menu scan? Check. Great service? Check. Speaking Thai in the kitchen? Check. 4 different types of chili on request? CHECK! I ordered the lunch chicken pad thai "very spicy." I think they are a bit conservative on spicing up their dishes because I could taste next to no spiciness...so...I asked or a side of chili and WOAH MAMA! I was back in Bangkok with a nice serving tray of 4 chilis: chili padi in fish sauce, jalapenos, chili powder, and chili sauce. They get 5 stars just for that...seriously. The chicken seemed so-so though..just a tad dry for my taste. But anywho, to complement my fine noodle array (and although it was 8.95, it was a heaping plate and they gave you tom yum soup with it), I had a Thai iced tea which was super sweet and very delish. This place was just meh. I've been spoiled with really good thai food in both San Francisco and Elk Grove so I was looking forward to find some really delicious Thai in my new stomping ground. Unfortunately this was not it. I ordered the Panang curry (one of my main staples) and asked for them to make it mild. It was way too spicy for my taste and had no flavor. The curry was really runny, not your typical thicker Panang and the kicker was it listed all these yummy vegetables in the curry on the menu but I ended up with ONLY green beans!!! I did not just pay $10 for watery curry and green beans! Very disappointed On the plus side, the service was great and the brown rice was delicious. When all was said and done my meal was about $20 but I wouldn't rate it as more than a $10 meal. Overall I likely won't be returning. read more

Must agree with Matt on the price, steep for skimpy portions and average thai food. The service was on the slow side, on my one hour lunch break, it took them more than 1/2 hour to get our meals. How hard is it to get two lunch plates? I want to have time to enjoy my meals even when it's a lunch time. We ordered pad thai and green curry; pad thai is way too salty and almost no acidity to counter the salt at all. The curry was ordered at med-hot and it came out with very little hint of spice and salty. Bland and salty in the same dish, ummm! that's not a good sign. As far as the decor, what decor?, it seems like they put up couple Thai stuff on the wall and that's about it. The place is some what crowded because they pack too many seats in a tiny place and it's hard to maneuver around. One bathroom for over 50+ seats, come on, is a disaster waiting to happen. Stopped in on our way back to San Francisco from Tahoe on July 25th after we read the glowing reviews. There was one review out of 100 that said it was not good, and that was our experience as well. We ordered three items. The first item was the Salmon Salad. The salmon was overcooked and had a slightly off taste. It wasn't seasoned properly with salt and pepper or any thai spices. The dressing was like a sweet modified ranch. The greens were fresh. The second item, Pad Thai had no lemon grass, no fish sauce, no cilantro, a generous amount of tamarind paste, soggy peanuts, and no lime juice. The shrimp were nicely cooked. The third item, Gai Yang, tasted and seemed like partially reheated Costco rotisserie chicken. It wasn't grilled or barbecued, and hadn't been marinated in anything remotely like I've had hundreds of times before. It arrived barely warmed and some of it was still cold. The prices were higher than Manora's or Thai House 530 in San Francisco and the waitress never checked back with us to see if everything was okay. The bill was around $50 for these three items and tea. They had an extensive beer menu, so maybe the other reviewers have never had authentic thai food and mostly drink their tastebuds to stupidity?. This is our favorite Thai restaurant in Auburn. The red curry is amazing and so is the pad thai. We have a hard time ordering anything else. Last time we went we thought we would be a bit more adventurous and tried the turnip cakes. We weren't quite sure what to expect, but they were delicious. We are never disappointed. We have eaten inside with and without soothing live music, outside on the patio when walking our dogs, and picked up to-go for nights we want to eat at home. The food is good and so are the portions. I love to come here for lunch and need to do takeout. The girl who works there currently RARELY ever answers the phone, which is an issue when take out is the only option during COVID. I've been in there and watched her watch the phone just ring and not pick it up, so I am not able to call ahead to order which makes time very tight when I am on a short lunch break. Also, she never puts any utensils in the bag so I've had to eat my food with my hands at my lunch desk in the past. Plus she is rude, even though I give her a good tip every time! Since it was a Sunday and 3:00 PM and the other Thai place was closed, it was a nobrainer to come to the Royal Thai. Right on the main street of "new" Auburn and parking was no problem. Upon entering we found only one other party. Since it was pouring rain and midday this was no great surprise. Ordered Pad Thai, green curry, and a beef and string beef dish. Next time I will order 3/5 in hotness instead of 4/5. I love ho,t but this was over the top hot. Still it all was deliciious and ther servings were large for a Thai restaurant. Sevice was great. To me nothing beats a hot bowl of soup on a cold rainy day....so I had my favorite, Won Ton Soup, it was full of bok choy, a little chicken and one a few small won ton and tons of broth. The broth was good but very skimpy on the won ton and chicken, way too much bok choy. What I didn't like is the fact that our waitress didn't come back to our table till much later, and we were the only people in the restaurant. We sat there talking for quite a while waiting for her to bring the check. To me this place is mediocre, the food just ok but not the best, the service meh. and this is the third time I tried it......done, no more. I'd rather go to Dave Thai in Auburn. read more

Dinner at Royal Thai has been outstanding on multiple occasions. Probably the best in Auburn. Dishes are clearly made to order, so yes, it takes a while. A long while. Be patient. It's friggin delicious and the service is extremely friendly. Both the red pumpkin curry and the green curry with eggplant, bell peppers, and chicken have been stellar with a nice kick. Spicy mango salad with prawns was an explosion of flavor and spice. Prepare yourself. Sensitive palates need not apply. Fresh rolls live up to their name, though more 'salad like' than I'd expected, some come with greens instead of rice noodles. Just read the menu to know what you're in for. Light and refreshing. Pad Gra Pow (stir fried beef with basil) was another winner - but let them know what your spice preference is if they don't ask and you can't handle the heat. One time the server asked, one time she didn't. They take reservations (call), but it doesn't seen you'd have to wait too-too long, though it does get full. Don't come here in a rush. Come here when you won't find yourself wondering where your food is and you can relax and enjoy your evening. It's worth it. read more

I know I may be spoiled with all the cheap delicious ethnic food in the Bay Area but this place was really just over priced for what it is. On Sundays, you only get the dinner menu. Everything on that is at least $8.95. My group ordered pad thai and pad see-ew, both mediocre. Someone else ordered the drunken noodles which was actually very delicious, but still not $8.95 worth. I was daringly enough to try the Thai sesame salad- which I would not order again. The peanut sauce dressing was basically a glob of peanut butter with sesame oil drizzled over. It was super thick, it's a paste, not sauce. It said mixed greens but I had like 8 mixed green leaves and the rest was all iceberg lettuce. The thai ice tea was $3, no thanks. When I saw the avocado curry on the menu, I immediately decided that was what I wanted to taste because I've never seen it. The waitress suggested chicken, but said that it was good with any meat, including seafood. I ordered it with tofu and brown rice. They have beers from Thailand, Japan, Holland, Belgium, Ireland, and Mexico. Plus they have beers and wines from California and other regions. They even sell a Margarita made from agave wine. The coconut based avocado curry surprised me with its spiciness. I like spicy food and this one gave me a pleasant sweat. The generous portion of avocado in the curry was still firm and well textured. The large chunks of avocado could probably have been cut just a little smaller and still retained their firmness. The tofu was a medium-soft variety rather than the too soft variety I'm used to eating in other restaurants. The rest of the vegetables, Thai basil, green beans, red and green bell peppers, were all perfectly cooked. This will definitely be a spot to stop on the way to Reno or Tahoe. Out of 5 levels of spice I chose 4 and as crazy spicy as it was, they did it just right because the spices weren't overpowering and they didn't ruin the flavor like some places tend to do when making their dishes spicy. Got to try the Pineapple Mango Curry, the Drunken Noodles, Fresh Rolls, and the Sticky Rice with Mango. All were amazing and me and my buddies all left happy and stuffed like turkeys. This place is fantastic, and very reasonably priced! The staff is *extremely* friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. I've been here half a dozen times and haven't been let down a single time! They're very accepting of any dietary restrictions you may have and honestly, it's the best vegetarian food I've had in auburn for sure. I love them, love them, love them! Every time i've been here, I am SO pleased. The decor is simple- classy, clean, but with a very cultural feel. You can even buy little Thai ornaments if you so desire. Service is okay. The waitresses aren't particularly friendly, but they're certainly not cold. I think it might be a cultural barrier. They're fairly prompt, though I always feel I waited a liiiitle bit longer than I should've. Food! It's... AMAZING! I get a vegetable tofu stir-fry. Ahhh... the cashews, the veggies, the tofu, the sauce- THE SAUCE! That's what really does it. I'm normally a 'quick' eater- not here. I literally try to eat one thing at a time, each little piece, so I can savor its individual flavor. Each bite tastes completely different than the previous ones. Went there for dinner with some friends last night around 6:30pm. Normally service is very prompt here, but we arrived right after a large party (10+ people). We were seated immediately, but service was slower from there on. The staff is very friendly which made up for it a bit. The food was excellent. We started with the Tom Kha soup and it only got better from there. Their Pad Thai is solid. The pumpkin curry special was amazing, but is a little spicy for those with a mild tongue. We've never been disappointed with the food here, and the atmosphere is very pleasant. I came close to giving Royal Thai 5 stars, why I didn't is at the bottom. The food is teriffic. I have never once had a bad meal. The presentation is beautiful, the atmosphere is nice, and the wait staff is usually very attentive and friendly. My wife and I eat here regularly and love it. It is so good, just thinking about it makes me want to drive into town to get me some drunken noodles or avocado curry. Lately they've made some decisions that leave me scratching my head. For example, they used to have a few specials that changed from time to time, now they have 15 specials that do not seem to change. At some point, they stop being specials, and start becoming an extension of the normal menu. The wait times can be hit or miss. There have been a couple occasions where we were left waiting a very long time for our food. Luckily, this is not a regular occurrence, and we guard against it further by arriving during off-peak hours. read more

Something is really wrong with these reviews. Let me start with the good. Food arrived quickly. Large quantities. The wine prices looked inexpensive. But the food. Just not good. Pad Thai had no flavor and was missing something. The dish had the toughest white chicken that I have ever had. The green curry was way too salty. It had a lot of spice but half of the eggplant pieces were al dente and rock hard. Tasted chemically. They are just not using quality ingredients. We stopped in for dinner at 6 pm on a Saturday. Every table was filled and there was a wait. They were under staffed so service was a huge disappointment. We had to ask for plates,and silverware. We never did get a plates and ate from the serving dishes. They tables to our right and left were complaining about the same problems, in addition to not receiving some of their order. Our Pot Stickers were cold, Drunken Noodles were cold and the Red Curry was watery and no heat.. The waiter never checked on us. Took forever to receive our bill once we were done. My 4 stars say that I'm a fan. Came here on Christmas eve with my wife and daughter after we discovered our first choice in Thai restaurants in town closed early. This was my first time at Royal Thai so I was a little apprehensive. The decor and atmosphere were warm and cozy. We were the only guests in the place at first but it soon started to get busy as the evening wore on. The service was very friendly and efficient. We ordered Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice and the Yellow Curry with light spice. The dishes were flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning for my taste. When it comes to Thai food I know a lot of folks like it very spicy but I prefer more subtle seasoning and it was perfect. We all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and will certainly return to sample other dishes. read more

I am very happy to not have to drive to Roseville to get good Thai food. The prices are steep, but that is in line with Roseville-Sacramento prices. (they are not the only ones in Auburn raising their prices to Sacramento's level) Food there is consistently good. The chicken is dry but once I went with the Calamari or Shrimp... I was done for. the service is not always the best and the acoustics SUCK add something to the walls (tapestries??) to help with the sound in there. We ordered food to go from Royal Thai on Sunday, May 19. They tried to charge us for a seafood dish that cost $11 more than the dish we ordered. when my husband questioned the charge, the women "corrected" it. When I checked my bank account there were two charges from the restaurant, one including the expensive seafood dish we hadn't ordered! Besides the double charge, the food was really bland and tasteless, not at all what I had gotten in the past. I called the restaurant today to tell them about the double charge and I got a recorded message stating that they would be closed for 2 weeks for remodeling. The whole thing smells fishy to me. If the restaurant reopens, we won't be returning as customers. What a shame. read more
