My dad and I had a few hours to kill before our return flights, so we spent a lot of time doing random things on the North Side, including eating an early dinner at Royal Thai. We both had pad see ew; he had chicken, I had tofu. The noodles and sauce were delicious, and my dad said that the chicken was tender and fresh, some of the best chicken he's had in pad see ew--and he should know, since the only thing he and my mom ever order at Thai restaurants is pad see ew with chicken, pork, or both. So the food is four or four-point-five stars. It's delicious. The service? Not so much. As I said, we were early, so we were the only ones in the (tiny) restaurant. The person who seated us also served us, and while he definitely went through the motions and didn't leave us stranded or looking for him at any point, his eagerness was somewhere between court-ordered roadside garbage cleanup and waiting in line at the DMV. He didn't smile and didn't say much. When he thanked us as we left, it was in such a monotone voice that he could have been reading off license-plate numbers or a three-month-old shopping list. The space itself is cute, although the tables are arranged in a clunky way. I can't tell whether they make it look smaller or larger. Like the server's attempt at human warmth, they've put exactly zero effort into their menus. They literally printed their menus off their website on an inkjet printer that was running out of colored ink. And because it's printed from a website, it's something like twenty pages long when it could be three or four. And did I mention that the printout is tattered? Have some self-respect, Royal Thai! You have a tiny restaurant; pay a professional printer for twenty menus. You don't need more than that. The restaurant is located right across the street from a cute park in Lincoln Square. We weren't in the picnicking mood, but if you happen to be, your best bet might be a to-go order and a picnic at Welles Park. Parking was a cinch right across the street. I would attribute it to my dad's otherworldly parking karma, but there were plenty of spots in front of us as well, so parking isn't bad, at least for a very early Monday dinner.

Came by for lunch. Service was acceptable, ambiance relaxed/casual and food was great. Highlight was the basil eggplant, curry was pleasant not overly sweet and the fried rice was delicious. Certainly a repeat type of establishment. FYI you are in a rush use an alternative.

I like it! We've ordered different items from here in the past, and we always liked what we've gotten. I always order Pad Kee Mao, Pad See Ew, or Kow Soy Noodle Soup, but this time, I tried the Panang Noodle- flavorful curry dish with crispy wide noodles. We really like the Crab Rangoon from here (better than most!)

I've been coming to Royal Thai for several years and they have always been consistent with their dishes. Even when I lived a bit further away, whenever I had a craving for Thai food, I would make the drive to Royal Thai. All the dishes I've ordered here are always packed with flavor and very authentic. Some of my highlights and favorite dishes include the fresh spring rolls (the tamarind sauce did it for me), Duck & Masumun Curry, Crispy Pad Thai, Pad Woon Sen, and the Royal Catfish. You can always find something solid on their menu. The service is also fast and they get a lot of takeout orders. The staff is always nice and accommodating. Another plus, they are BYOB!

I've been going to this restaurant for about 20 years off and on and the food is the tops but I am crushed by the treatment I got last night from the person (not sure if he is owner but I think so). I ordered my dish to go which was garlic chicken and when I tasted it found that it lacked the savory garlic favor that it usually has. I hesitated to take it back because since the pandemic the man I have dealt with seems unapproachable and almost angry at times. I went back anyway because this dish is usually so good. When I told the owner he replied that is just how we make it. I said I've been coming for years and it tastes different. He says they took over business 10 years ago and that's how they make it. He said something barely audible under his breath and when I asked him what he said he replied 'I know you. You always complain. You said the food was too expensive. I had made a comment once when the prices went up as they did all over but that was just it. I have never returned my food or complained in any way to him which I told him. He made some other nasty comment and walked away. Wow! I have never been treated this way. This man has no business being in the food industry acting this way. Unbelievable!

Not bad! I'm a fan. We stopped by Royal Thai for a late lunch this past weekend and I was pleased! Street parking is free in case you make the drive out and luckily we scored a spot just outside the entrance. Once in, I'll say that seating is pretty limited but being late in the lunch hour we were only one of three tables at the time. No issues grabbing a table. For food, we started with the fresh spring rolls. Not bad and reminded me of Filipino fresh lumpia weirdly with the sweet peanut sauce on top. For main entrees, boo boo did the pad kee mao or noodles with basil, bell pepper, bamboo shoots. Pretty delicious and a nice alternative to our usual pad see ew we normally go with. For myself, I did the curry noodles for a change up. I actually really enjoyed it. You don't typically see curry served with noodles but I'll say it was quite nice and warming for the snowy day we had visited. All in all, I'm a fan of this spot. Prices were also quite nice at just under $10 per dish. Also forgot to mention this spot is BYOB, so bring the party. 'Til next time, cheers!

I ordered from Royal Thai based on all the glowing reviews! It was aiight but I've had much better in the city. Honestly, the flavors were just not on point. I will say though, they had one of the best crab rangoons I've ever had. $4.95 will get you a bag full of the little guys. They were just filled with all the gooey insides, really creamy, amazing flavor. I got to give Royal Thai that. But then...the main dishes. I tried the Crispy Pad Thai with chicken ($9.95) and just found it okay. There wasn't much flavor to it and I don't think I loved the crispness to the dish. I prefer a normal pad thai. I had the Pad See Ew ($8.95) also with chicken. Pad See Ew is one of my favorite dishes and this was sadly not one of the best versions I've had. Again, just not enough flavor. I don't want to go as far as saying it was bland but somewhere between bland and flavorful is where the Pad See Ew laid. The chicken in both dishes was good though - not dry and good amount in each dish. I'm not counting Royal Thai completely out just yet. I'd order from them again to try some different main entrees and those crab rangoons again! But I can't recommend the pad see ew or crispy pad thai. Nu uh. Take a pass on those.

I've only walked in here once, but have tried their food twice. I fell in love with their Crispy Pad Thai and come here when I have cravings for it. Food Crispy Pad Thai - good portion for the price, and very flavorful. It doesn't really remind me as much of Pad Thai (more of a sweet soy sauce based flavor). I love how they make their wide noodles soo crispy!! YUM Atmosphere The restaurant is small and more like a fast food Thai restaurant. Take the food to go if you're not a fan of heat and sweat a lot (no a/c). Good place to come if you want to be in and out. Parking I'm sure you can find a lot of free parking in the area if you look around. Otherwise, it's walking distance from the Brown/Red Line. :)

Royal Thai is my personal favorite Thai in the neighborhood (and the options are plentiful!!). The interior is warm and inviting. It's not over done like a few Thai places I've eaten at, but it's perfectly decorated with a few major pieces of art/sculptures here and there. The food is inexpensive and delicious. We've eaten there many times because it's just down the block, so we've tried a lot of things on the menu. My personal favorite is the chicken pad Thai and my boyfriend loves the curries. We also really enjoy the peanut sauce spring rolls and chicken egg rolls for appetizers! We typically pay about $30 with tax and tip for the two of us so it's place you want to frequent!

BYOB. Perfectly priced and incredibly delicious. Go to spot when in the mood for great Thai. The Royal Thai noodle and Sesame Chicken is outrageous. Even the basic fried rice is done right and we usually get the combination fried rice to supplement the white rice. Chicken egg rolls are a great starter. read more

It used to be that when my Thai hankering kicked up, we'd head to the perfectly tasty and delightful Namo on Lincoln and Byron. Then one evening, my wife and I were out in Lincoln Square and popped in here, and now we've got them on speed dial. Almost everything on the menu is delicious. The portions are particularly generous (even carry out), and the delivery service is super speedy. I recommend beginning every single meal you eat here with a steaming bowl of their exquisite Tom Yum soup. Feel free to throw darts at the menu after that. You're going to like whatever it hits. read more

Last Sunday I ordered pick up from Royal Thai. I've eaten here several times and now its become me and my girlfriend's favorite Thai restaurant in the area. Each time I've tried something new which includes the Drunken Noodle and Pad Thai with Tofu. Looking forward to trying the curries as I heard the Panang Curry with noodles is very good. Overall I appreciate the great service and really affordable prices. Delicious food, nice decor and BYOB definitely keep me coming back for more. Parking is easy too as they are right on Welles Park. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

Definitely our go-to Thai place in North Center now that Namo closed. They are excellent about adapting items to be vegan and portion sizes are generous. We always ask for things to be extra spicy and they definitely oblige! The chive cakes are a must get, in my opinion, and I am a big fan of the Royal Thai Noodle. Food is ready fast for pick-up and BYOB if you want to sit inside. Service is always friendly and attentive. read more

The food is really good. Especially the fried rices which are delicious. My bf likes the duck curry a lot. Usually we take the table by the window which has a view. So please consider taking a different one so it's available when we're coming. Especially on fridays at night time :) service is good and fast. Enjoy! read more

In a neighborhood where there is a abundance of Thai restaurants, I pass about 5 others in the 1/2 mile I travel to come here. To me, Thai food is a very "clean" tasting cuisine, and this place seems even "cleaner" tasting . As others have mentioned, their crab Rangoon is outstanding, very light and crispy. The pot stickers are also good. I don't like the sauce their fresh spring rolls comes with - too gloopy in my opinion, but they're so friendly I bet they'd bring me a different sauce if I asked . I have enjoyed every soup I've tried. My usual go to dish in Thai restaurants had been basil chicken, but I haven't tried it here; it seems in Chicago it's made with ground chicken rather than sliced as I'm used to, and the first place I had it I really didn't like it, so here I've tried a few others - and have fallen in love with their Panang Curry. I have had take out, delivery, and eaten in the restaurant. The servers sometimes seem inexperienced, but are friendly. The food has always been fresh, and if out of the restaurant, very carefully packed and wrapped for transport with no spills at all, even on a bike. Last time I ate there, it was an in-between weather kind of day, warm but not so warm you want a/c. But I do want some fresh air, and the place seemed a little close with no air movement. It did not stop us from enjoying our food, we just didn't linger. Good food, fair price. I think I know what we're having for dinner tonight! read more

Fantastic lunch special here. For $5.95 you get soup (the veggie tom kha is to die for), appetizer, and main entree. The food is great, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the servers are friendly and efficient. Royal Thai definitely leaves my tummy content and money in my pocket. read more

i bumped into a friend at the library across the street and i was hankering for some green curry (my fave thai dish) so we decided to check out royal thai. upon approaching the front door, i immediately spotted the yelp sticker on the window. so, i knew i wouldn't be disappointed. i ordered the green curry while my friend ordered the tofu pad thai. i liked my curry and he liked his tofu and noodles. although, i enjoyed my meal, the food wasn't amazing. it's not a place i would kill to eat at. i'll come back if i'm in the area and i want some thai but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. i'm too loyal to sticky rice on western. read more

Pad thai, panang noodles, and green curry chicken were all ridiculously delicious. The thai iced tea was a great way to help cool the mouth from the heat of the pad thai and enjoy a great thai drink. Would definitely go back! read more

This was my first time ordering (takeout) from this establishment and must say I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious and flavorful the Tom Yum soup with chicken and shrimp was! Yum! I also ordered the beef pad si-ew. What struck me was that it wasn't greasy at all, which has been my experience at most other places. I will definitely be ordering again :). read more

I'm literally keeping this place in business. I probably order once a week. I love their pad thai....lots of noodles, cooked through well, and I get extra peanut for no extra charge! Other dishes I really enjoy: green curry, tom yum soup, delicious vegetable egg rolls, crab rangoon is ok. Delivery is never more than an hour...usually 30-40 minutes in most cases. The guys know my name and my order. Yum. Oh! And they have an awesome lunch special (carry out or dine in only - not worth it for delivery minimum). Cheap! read more

So, first of all, Royal Thai is super affordable and BYOB. You can easily get away with spending less than $10 on dinner here. Second of all, the food is straight up tasty. I had the Panang Curry, which was sweet, spicy, and savory all in one well balanced bowl. (FYI, medium spicy was perfect for me: it kept things interesting, but still allowed me to taste all the other flavors.) My roommate had the Mixed Vegetable dish with brown rice, which was simple, but not boring. In case you need a third of all, the interior is also adorable. Although it's small, it feels intimate and cozy, especially with the fancy tablecloths and Thai art on the walls. Seriously a great place overall. read more

Lincoln Square / Ravenswood is saturated with wonderful Thai restaurants, and they all have their niche. Royal Thai will always have a place in my heart, ever since I lived above it for a year. The small dining room is bright, and cheerfully decorated. Tables are covered in glass on top of ethnic textiles. Even though I wouldn't call it the most romantic setting, it's a wonderful place for an intimate dinner. (I would say it's a tad bright and the music is strangely new-agey, the only odd thing about the ambience). But the excellent service and first-class food make it great for a low-pressure date. The presentation on the dishes is gorgeous, and I have never ordered a "clunker" from the menu. BYOB makes it even more affordable. I've had wonderful experiences with their delivery and bargain lunch specials as well. My girlfriend loves the Thai Iced Tea. --------- Update, the ambiance is even better and I think they ditched the new age music some time ago. So many more great meals since I wrote this, glad to see they're continuing with a such a high standard of excellence both in-house and takeout. read more

Probably some of the best thai food that I've ever had, and fantastic service to go along with it. However, the portions are a bit smaller and the prices are a little higher than other thai places that I have been to. Definitely a hole in the wall locale, but the restaurant is clean and has a cozy feel. Also, the Panang Curry is a MUST. Just the right combination of sweetness from the coconut milk, and the spiciness of the peppers. Amazing. read more

I don't know where to begin other than I love this place! without a doubt one of my favorite Thai places in the neighborhood. The food is delicious, prices are perfect and it's a BYOB. I would say the atmosphere isn't the most romantic but the food and byob aspects more than make up for this. Just writing this review makes me hungry for the spicy Panang Noodle dish, but honestly everything I've had on the menu has been quite good. read more

Delicious. Try the Panang Curry! The servers are always helpful and willing to give suggestions. The prices are great, the atmosphere is more King of Siam than the jumbled look many places go for, and it is BYOB making for a great place for a swanky feeling date for a grad student budget. read more

the little lady and i do this place about 4 times a week on average. they're the nicest ever. seriously. the nicest. for example the lady does not care for ice in her water so she was using her fork to transfer her ice into my glass. our waitress saw this and immediately came with a glass of water and no ice to replace her glass. she even had a pitcher of water with no ice just for our table. another waitress didn't know the scoop, so she filled the lady's glass with regular ice water. our waitress saw this and immediately sprung up from behind with a glass of water sans ice. also their fortune cookies taste like vanilla read more

Love this place, one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Chicago! Ate here last night with a friend of mine, after having been here several times before. Always get seated right away, cute dining room with about a dozen tables. I got a Thai ice tea and we ordered the chicken egg rolls, which were piping hot, crispy and delicious, followed by the steamed shumai, which were also tasty and perfect size for sharing and picking up with chopsticks. I ordered the Panang noodle, which is always amazing, and my friend the Kow Soy noodle soup, which she also enjoyed. Everything arrived to our table fast and hot. We ordered the mango sticky rice dessert, which is the perfect combination of fresh mango and creamy coconut sweet rice. Great service, awesome meal, will definitely be back for that curry! read more

I used to love this place. Was my go to Thai place. But the last few times u ordered, I realized that they use styrofoam containers and that releases a fume into the food!!! The noodles are piping hot when they put them in the container and web the seal it, some of the styrofoam seems to combine with the food. Not at all a pleasant flavor. :(. If they stopped using styrofoam, which they should anyway for environmental reasons, u might come back. read more

5 stars based on Bahn mi, cha gio and iced coffee I ordered today…read more I must have been part of an early crowd. When I arrived, there was only one other table dining, which made it GREAT for me. It's a decent size hall with 10+ table arrangements, making it pretty great for a group to enjoy their lunch. It also featured a couple of kiosks for ordering, which I thought was a bit easy to miss, since it was tucked away in the left corner when you walked in. It looked like there was also a cashier available to take orders, if you miss the kiosks. I've seen places where they simply do not have anyone at the register to take orders, but that wasn't the case for Lotus. Before deciding to visit them today, I had an impression that their menu choices were very limited compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I was used to. I'm certainly not complaining, since I'm usually a huge fan of select "specialty" approach in restaurants. That's why I decided to order one of their Bahn mi, where I normally would have chosen pho for my first visit. And it didn't disappoint. First off, the size of the sandwich was good. I've had it where they charged a buck or two less, but they weren't big enough to be a full "lunch" portion. Lotus' size, I thought was decent. I had ordered one of their cha gios just in case the sandwich failed to fill me, but I think I would have been okay without it. Cha gio was super good tho! Oh, and the iced V-coffee was good, too. Typically, they'll bring out the coffee before your meal is ready, probably because they're ready-made in the morning and all you'd need to do is pour them over ice. I of course, have known legitimate mom n' pop places, where they'll actually bring out coffee as it's brewing in Phin (stainless steel coffee filter) and a glass of ice with condensed milk, so you can wait for the coffee to finish brewing and pour yourself one, which is what I *always* prefer. Not here, but no big deal. You can usually tell how good the food is going to be by trying their iced coffee. Even though V-coffee isn't known for using "incredible" beans, the balance of the strength of coffee and condensed milk *does* make a big difference in your experience. I felt this place had it correct! I'll definitely come back myself and even bring coworkers or my family to have their Bahn mi again. What I'm not sure about is whether I want to try their pho or bun. First, they don't offer too many variations, so I'm stuck choosing from just a few. (For example, I usually go for "brisket-only" or a combo of brisket and rare steak, but they didn't seem to have those options. Granted, it's possible they'll make it happen if I asked) Secondly, I think they're a couple bucks more expensive than what I would like to pay for a bowl of pho. We'll see.

Then wiped his fingers on a dirty rag and proceeded to finish making the bowls. A short time later, we were served that same bowl of ramen. Watching an employee use their bare hands and mouth on food that was then served to a customer was extremely concerning and completely unacceptable from a food safety and hygiene standpoint. It ruined the experience and made us lose confidence in the restaurant's food handling practices. I hope management takes this seriously, retrains their staff on proper food safety procedures, and ensures this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Daily special of the bone marrow bacon jam toast - glazed, slippery off the bone, savory and sweet. Always love a good bone marrow dish to get the sweetness off it. This was so good that there were bits of the marrow and jam left stuck to the bone, I took a piece of the toast and scooped the bone dry. Nothing left for anyone to attack this. Non pork dishes were the Mushroom 3 ways and Spanish octopus. Mushroom dish was savory with all the coated sauces elevating this. Spanish octopus was kicked lightly and easily can bite in to enjoy the tender and charred portions. But the award went to my main course - the braised pork shoulder with saffron, apricots and Swiss chard. Aside from the rippable pork meat when dining on it, the sauces fused together on this dish elevated it and had everyone coming back for more. I needed an official Chicago culinary experience and found it at The Purple Pig without a doubt.

At that point I knew the first meal wasn't a fluke. It's not inexpensive, but the portions are generous, and I felt the quality more than justified the price. I was there by myself because I'm traveling for work and actually enjoyed the communal tables. They made the atmosphere feel welcoming and a little less lonely than sitting by myself. The staff was excellent, too. The gentleman with the glasses at the meat counter was friendly, funny, and made the experience even more enjoyable. He even threw in a complimentary rib, which was such a nice surprise and a great example of the hospitality here. One thing to know before you go: the line can get long, but don't let that scare you away, it moves efficiently, and the food is absolutely worth the wait. Okay so picture this. I'm seated at the Royal Thai restaurant, napkin in my lap, frigid water in my hand, and a chip on shoulder (potato specifically :) ). All alone, coy and afraid, I begin to feel the goose casserole I ordered hit my tummy...hard! What a feeling! Bowels loaded and at the ready I slithered to the restroom(drop zone). As you know, some of the most interesting things in life happen in the little boys room. I keep the lights off because I'm known as someone who truly values privacy. I make my way to the latrine but catch a real doozy in the process. Must've been some slippery goo of some sort coating the floor cos down I went like a sack of potatoes. Smacked my head on the John and I was out like a goddamn uhhhhhhh.... Anyways cut back to me face down on the cold, sopping tile floor with a slightly larger chip on my shoulder. I began to descend into a deep deep sleep. I dreamt the sweetest dream I ever did dream. I was home, but I wasn't really home. It was a familiar place yet so...... different. I was eating a sandwich, but it wasn't actually a sandwich. It was a bag of spiders and I ate it all without hesitation. Mmmmm (I know right). All of a sudden I was sitting on a train with my good friend Clyde but the train didn't seem to have a destination. We rode it all night long and into the sweet, sweet morning. And as the sun did rise above the hilltops, I began to come to. I awoke a different man, refreshed with a new understanding of life. I exit, take one last bite of goose casserole, and walk out of that joing without paying, without giving up a goddamn nickel to those bastards (sorry about that Cassandra). Called to place a order fro delivery..ask the person if they deliver to my area took them 5 minutes for them to understand my address....after that I place my order and had to repeat it 4 times because they did not understand the items that I wanted even though they were on their menu. When my order gets here I order Pad woon seen with shrimp and to my surprise I get peanuts inside with tofu! Never once did it state that I was going to get tofu and peanuts with my pad woon seen under menu description. So i decided that I was going to scoop everything out! There are a lot of Thai restaurants in Lincoln Square, but this is one of my favorites. I haven't had a bad meal from here yet, and there's almost always space to sit down in the dining room if you don't want to just do takeout. Their portions are good without being super huge, which I actually like since that way I don't eat a ton of food all at once. They don't have any kind of online ordering that I can find, so you'll have to do it the old-school way and give them a call. read more
