My husband and I were on our way to Vegas and needed a quick stop for breakfast not too far from the freeway. Roy's was perfect! Just a mile off the 15 freeway. We were greeted immediately upon entering the restaurant by friendly employees which set the tone for a delicious meal. My husband had machaca and ate every morsel on his plate. He claims it was the best he has had because of the tenderness of the meat combined with the great favors of the beans and rice. I had a spinach omelet. The generous amounts of the veggies were complimented by the melted Swiss cheese. As we were eating our breakfast, we began our return visit on our roadtrip home. Quite pleased with this place. I ordered one of the specials. The scrambled eggs came with fresh purple onion, jalapenos and tomotoes. The beans that came on the side reminded me of my Aunt Adeles. They had an excellent flavor. I didnt ask, but that anything like the canned refried beans so many places serve. Infact maybe the best thing was that the food was NOT salted to death!! My husband had the Pancho Villa plate and it was equally as delicious. Coifee was strong, thankfully!! If you can not handle coffee that flavorful, by all means water it down. I'm an avid supporter of small businesses, especially small, family-owned businesses. My partner and I hit up this hidden gem on our way to Vegas. We needed a place outside of L.A. to grab breakfast as we left pretty early to beat Southern California traffic. Roy's is unassuming, homey and unequivocally local. It feels like a true space where local residents and neighbors come to eat, gather and hangout after a long day's work. The food was solid. And the family that owns it (it's a multigenerational spot) came to talk to us as we were eating. The owner (the chef) sat at the table across from us with his daughter (?) to eat breakfast. You could tell it was family run. You could tell the owner was proud of his food and all the effort he put into his restaurant. Growing up in a family-owned restaurant myself, I felt at home here. It was wonderful. In know most drivers will want to stop at a McDonald's or another fast food joint to quickly move along towards their final destination. But I'd urge everyone to stop and support hardworking families like this place. read more

Stopped in on our way back from Vegas. Food was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Simple diner fare, but the salsa was fire but they charged for it!! Pay for it and get the salsa to out on your eggs and potatoes, highly recommend. Parking lot was a little weird with the handicap parking up on a hill. As an avid Route 66 traveler, I have to highly recommend Roy's Cafe in Barstow. It's owned by Juan Pollo, who also owns Roy's Cafe and Motel in Amboy. The restaurant itself is operated by a different family. The food here is superb. I've only been for breakfast, but would love to come back and try their burgers. Do yourself a favor and pay this place a visit if you're in Barstow or traveling Route 66. read more

I'm telling you this place has THEE BEST burger I've ever had. Like that homemade burger your dad makes type / level! Absolutely blows In-n-out out of the water. I had just the single burger asked for grilled onions. Everything about it was just superior. I substituted the fries for onion rings and they were excellent. I also ordered a watermelon aqua Fresca and it was just *chefs kiss*. My boyfriend had the bacon, eggs and hash browns. Said the bacon was cooked perfectly. Our waitress was such a sweetheart. Very polite and attentive. The owner was also very friendly and enjoyed meeting him. I learned it's a family owned restaurant. The restaurant is an older building. It had clean tables and seating & bathrooms! Although, the only time we come to Barstow is coming to and from Vegas, I may possibly make a separate trip for this place. The desserts looked insane!! My Dad & I set out for a day trip to the Original Roy's Cafe & Motel in Amboy, California last Sunday and so keeping with the theme we decided to stop off in Barstow for some good old diner fare. The restaurant takes you back to the 50's with red & White vinyl tablecloths, Marilyn Monroe Posters & different pictures around cafe. Don't like diner food, not to worry , they have Mexican dishes as well. Including Micheladas to drink & they are large y'all. Why 3 stars. Unfortunately the omelets we ordered were burnt on the bottom, the gravy on my biscuits was sour and I got the feeling our waitress hated us upon sight even though we never complained when she served us someone else's food. The Ice Tea was good and comes in a huge Mason Jar that's a plus to me and the hash browns weren't burnt so that's a plus too! read more

First time here. It's a little rough as far as decor and surrounding property. We were greeted right away and were able to seat ourselves for dine in. Our waitress came over right away, and we ordered coffee and got the menus. I think we must've had a new waitress as she was VERY sift spoken and did not seem to know the menu. We didn't make any substitutions and had to repeat or show here the item on the menus. Sweet girl just seemed a little overwhelmed. Our breakfasts were very good, chorizo and eggs, and cafe scramble. Roys Cafe is family owned and operated, because kids are greeting and serving, while mom is management. The ABC omelette was delish, and my partner enjoyed the pastrami omelette. The biscuits and gravy were great, and the bacon was meaty and crispy. This will now be our go to spot on the way to Vegas. read more

When you go, ask to speak with him and you will soon find out what I am talking about. My friend and I shared the hard Taco plate with the shredded beef. You can tell none of the ingredients are frozen and the plate is made with love. You can't say that about too many restraunts today! Even the ice tea was fresh. We came here for the first time. It was very cute inside only reason for a star. The food was disgusting who can go wrong with a bean and cheese burrito well Roy's can. First of all the cheese was not melted on mine or my daughter's burrito. I then asked for salsa to try and cover up the lack of flavor bleh. My son hated his food and didn't eat anything. On top of that there were flies everywhere and dodging them was no fun. They also allowed a homeless lady with a cart full of her blankets etc to park it right next to our table which just added to the nausea. Our waitress never once asked if we would like refills on soda, if everything was ok nothing. We had to go ask for the check and boxes just to get out of there and get some fresh air. Maybe you have to be a regular to know what to order and receive proper service. I was pretty much ignored by the young woman server. She was really busy on her phone standing behind the pie case. Ordered crispy tacos. The ground beef seemed to be a hamburger patty they chopped up. It was cooked to well done before putting it into the tortilla. When dropped into the fryer, it was burnt. No seasoning. The three tacos were then laid flat on the plate with lettuce, cheese and sour cream spread on top, like a tostada. Any attempt to open the taco to add the topping was a failure. They broke into pieces and what little meat there was fell to the plate. It had to be eaten like a taco salad. Salsa was good. And not sure what is going on with their soda. I ordered diet.
