There's not much to choose from in restaurants in Barstow--mostly Mexican, one "Eyetalian" restaurant and Roy's. There may be more, but we had just come from Tucson an Phoenix and were kind of burnt out on Mexican. The waitress was very friendly and funny. I asked what she liked and she said the Nachos and the Pastrami sandwich. My wife actually went for the Nachos with Al Pastor marinated pork after a week of eating Mexican! I went with the Pastrami sandwich and both were spot on! I chose it with a generous side salad with really fresh greens and Ranch dressing. It was way better than we were expecting. The staff was friendly and helpful, my wife really enjoyed her street tacos and the shredded beef in the tacos that I had was one of the best that I can remember ever having. Ah... the history and romance associated Route 66, which was routed through Barstow, CA on Main Street until the Interstate made the old road obsolete. No worries, as all you have to do to enjoy great diner cuisine, and Route 66 ambiance is to exit the interstate, and drive on Main Street to Roy's Cafe, located in Barstow, CA. The dining room is cheerfully decorated in a mixture of 1963 and 2023, and features lots of booths, each with a checkered tablecloth. There is lots of cheerful, natural lighting thanks to the many windows. The dining room is clean, quite spacious and very comfortable. As you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by a friendly staff member who will invite you to sit at any open table of your choice. Roy's offers printed menus, but a few selections are posted above the window to the kitchen, including "Desayunos Mexicanos" - Mexican breakfasts - and the burger menu, including "The Heart Attack," which includes four meat patties, with the burger reposing on a mountain of fries. Oh my! Yes, I was thinking about giving it the "ol' college try" but I went for breakfast instead. Roy's is serious about breakfast, as the breakfast menu is three pages of all your classic diner favorites, plus the Mexican selections listed above the window to the kitchen, and breakfast is served unitl 11 in the morning on weekdays. It's a breakfast lover's paradise! From the "Pancakes" section of the menu, Tom went with "Three Pancakes, Two Eggs and Two Sausages." The "Pancake" section of the menu doesn't offer the options the "Breakfast" menu does, but you can order add-on's to your pancake, such as berries or chocolate chips - at a nominal extra cost - and you can order your eggs "your way." Tom went with scrambled eggs, and he had nothing but good things to say about his fine breakfast. From the first page of the "Breakfast" menu, I went with "Ham Steak and Eggs," and "Mexican style rice and beans" along with a biscuit and gravy. This is true "comfort food" and the best breakfast EVER! The menu offers countless choices of sides to go with your main entree, including Mexican rice and beans, hash browns, fruit, tomatoes, cottage cheese, and every type of toast you can think of OR biscuit and gravy. Truly Roy's Cafe offers the best of everything! My entree of "Ham Steak" was a thick cut of ham, and the portion was HUGE, as it was most likely 6 ounces or so. It was grilled perfectly on the griddle, complete with grill marks and was juicy, tender and simply delicious. The chef at Roy's Cafe has talent! I ordered my eggs fried sunnyside up, and they arrived as ordered, fried perfectly with just a little brown around the edge, the way eggs should be. Once again, the talented chef nailed this one... The Mexican rice wasn't your "red" variety, as it was golden, with a perfect texture mix of slightly crunchy/soft, with lots of flavor, as I assume it must have cooked in chicken broth. It reminded me of rice that I've enjoyed during my countless trips to Mexico. The refried beans were simply amazing, as they were topped with Mexican shredded cheese and a few corn tortilla chips, and like the rice, they tasted like something you'd enjoy in Mexico. The rice and beans made for an amazing side dish. The biscuit was fresh, in-house baked, cut in half and covered with rich, flavorful country gravy, direct from Roy's kitchen. It was simply delicious! Who could ever order toast when you can enjoy Roy's biscuit and gravy? Words or photos can't describe the goodness of the breakfast I enjoyed at Roy's Cafe on this mid Friday morning. Talk about fine diner "comfort food!" Let me put it this way: You can't find a better breakfast anywhere or at any price than the breakfast you'll enjoy at Roy's Cafe! It's no wonder that "foodies" exit the Interstate and flock to Roy's Cafe, as they've taken a hint from Barstow locals that Roy's Cafe serves great Route 66-style diner cuisine, and the staff is as friendly as it gets. It's not simply nostalgia, it's great food! For all Yelpers... Roy's Cafe is 5 star dining, as the food is amazing and the service is friendly. Maybe the best breakfast in the Mojave Desert? The food was fair and the service was great. The reason for such a low rating is because they tried to overcharge us a little over $10.00. They charged more than what the menu quoted, they added tax onto each item (written in beside the charge), then they added more tax on the total. When we pointed out their mistake they tried to argue that the higher price was because we were paying with credit card, we were paying cash. Needless to say, we had them add everything according to the menu, then add the tax, and it came out a little over $10.00 more that they were charging us. If they would have just said it was an honest mistake I wouldn't be writing this, but they threw such a stink I have to say make sure you check your receipt. read more

Small family owned and operated cafe. Mother cooking while three daughters are working as waitresses. All overlapped to insure all customers were attended to completely. Evelyn was our main waitress and she was terrific. All had incredible smiles and service first attitudes. I have never been here before and was just driving through when we found Roy's on yelp and decided to try it due to the positive reviews. No waiting but most booths were occupied with diners. Maybe we ordered wrong, but my spouse and I thought Roy's was "just okay." We were looking for a spot to grab dinner during our long drive on I-40. Sharing a cheeseburger at a vintage diner on Route 66 sounded like fun, so we made the stop. There's a small parking lot available for dining in. Barstow is a relatively small town; you won't have an issue with the parking situation here. There seemed to be a drive-through option as well. It's certainly a diner, inside and out. Imagine checkered table cloths, red pleather booths, and framed newspaper clippings on the walls. We shared the nachos with ground beef and a 1/3 lb cheeseburger with fries. Everything was fine. The nachos were topped with a squeezable sour cream, and the fries tasted as if the fry oil needed to be changed. We tried the verde salsa with our nachos; it was the highlight of the meal. I had been craving an old fashioned milkshake, so we ordered a chocolate one to-go. It, too, was fine and not outstanding; it reminded me of a milkshake one would make at home with your typical pantry and freezer items. The service was great, though. I agree with other reviewers that this place felt very family-run. There's certainly charm to that, and supporting a small business with decades of history is reason enough to give this place a try. Roy's is located on historic Route 66 in Barstow, CA. It is a fairly small place housed in a fairly old (1940s era) building. They have burgers, sandwiches and some Mexican offerings. My family and I all ordered burgers. They were big and delicious. Being from California originally, the California style burger they offer is just what the heart wants but probably doesn't need. A big beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and Thousand Island style sauce. They'll even grill the onions if you ask. When I tell you it hit the spot, it hits a few. I ordered fries with my burger. Crinkle fries cut to a good thickness. A little more cooked than I prefer but definitely not overcooked. They just needed a little extra ketchup. Others in my group ordered onion rings with their burgers. They seemed to enjoy them. I did not try them so I can't say much. But they did look good. Service was friendly today. There is so much Decor to look at that you could spend two or three visits looking at the details , movie posters , etc. The breakfast that I had was acceptable if not outstanding . The one fall back was that the service that I got was pretty lackluster . The server decided that she had to chat with a couple who wanted their picture taken over and over and over, and it was probably 15 minutes before I got my water and tea . Over the years while driving to and from Lost Wages we would often stop in Barstow to grab a bite to eat, but it has always been either fast food (rare) or more likely Mega Tom's. This time on our return I wanted something different and Yelp led us to Roy's Cafe; and the wife agreed. Roy's is located about 1 mile off the freeway and in a part of town (near downtown) that we had never ventured through, which added to the experience in itself. We are both so glad we did and this will be our primary stop from this day forward. I ordered the Machaca plate and the wife ordered the Scrambled plate with a side of pancakes (she always has to have her pancakes when we are away from home). Both plates were loaded and VERY delicious! My Machaca plate came with rice and beans, as well as tortillas. I was asked if I desired any salsa and jumped at the chance when one of the offerings was green salsa Verde. The wife really liked her meal, but as noted is quite large and she took about half of it home. She really liked the pancakes, too. Not only were our meals delicious, but that salsa Verde was one of the BEST I have ever tasted. It was so good that I inquired about it. Not only was I informed that it is made in-house, which I had perceived, but they sold it too. I purchased a pint, took it home, indulged on some of it the following day, split up the remainder into two portions and froze it for future consumption.
