I needed a smog from a "star certified" provider stat! Let's just say that something was due the next day and in order to not have my fee almost double, I had to get a quick smog. I found RPM Smog via Yelp (of course) and called them super early to get an appointment. They were open and said I could pop in asap, they could fit me in. Fifteen minutes later my car was being serviced and I was sitting in the cozy waiting room. The real plus? I was in and out within 20 minutes. Done and done! I brought my Dad's car in for a smog inspection. He's recovering from surgery so I didn't want him to worry about it. I asked my uncle's partner for a neighborhood recommendation as they and my Dad both live in the same area. It is definitely a place I had driven by and hadn't noticed before. It looks to be an old service station with an adjacent garage n a large corner lot. It's across the street from the municipal airport on a less busy part of Freeport Blvd. At first I thought it was closed but they have a small office and the shop, and they have a sign that tells you to "follow the footprints" which are painted on the walkway. I followed the directions, entered the office and was quickly helped at the front desk and the whole process only took 15-20 minutes. There was one other customer ahead of me at about 10 am. More arrived shortly after. You can sit indoors or at a table and chairs outside while waiting for your car. I will be bringing my own car here from now on. A real throwback. My usual place that I was at a month ago resulted in fisticuffs between an angry client whose diesel Mercedes didn't pass, with threats to call the cops if he didn't pay up. $55 for an SUV inspection plus certificate for the DMV. "Just got my car smogged today--passed with flying colors! I've been coming to this place for years, and I've been telling everybody--friends, family, people in the area--to come here too. I'm not sure if the name has changed, but this location has been here serving the community longer than just about anyone else. Hands down one of the best in town. They always have the best prices--or at the very least the most comparable--around. I know because I personally call around and check every time, and they consistently come out on top. They're always honest and fair, and today was a perfect example: I recently had a catalytic converter replaced (thanks a lot, California DMV requirements), but I accidentally gave the shop the wrong model year--off by just one. They installed the part based on what I told them. When I brought it in for the smog check, the tech here spotted the mismatch immediately. He called the other shop, explained everything, handled it all for me, and got it sorted out fast. No slacking--he was totally on top of it. Really impressive, especially since it was 100% my mistake. The parts look identical between those two years (same trim, same model), so it was an easy mix-up, but he made the readjustment painless. Smog Check time. We arrived on Saturday, around 10:30am. There were 3 people in line in front of us. They said it was only a 20 minute wait. The next person that came in they said an hour wait. We checked in after someone checked out. The service worker was very friendly and personable. It seemed like a one man shop. It still was smooth. We left for a walk and when we got back our car was ready. We passed so all was good. The waiting room was nice and warm as it was raining out. read more

I will give this place zero star. Long story short, people should come here if you like unfriendly, unprofessional, and super arrogant staff. The almighty DMV requires a Smog check so I dropped by this place and checked with the staff the Smog check cost since I was doing price comparison in the area. However, I got more than a just simple quote along with a ton of attitude from the staff also. The staff just gave me a "out of door " price without any explanation of what that the price included. As a careful customer & don't want any dispute later, I asked again what does the "Out of door " price means & if the DMV certificate fees included, since many Smog check station would consider DMV certificate fee as a separated charge. The staff acted annoyed & just said " out of door means out of door" without clearly breaking down what does that means. He acted like the customer should have known the company's price structure & policy even he/she was there the first time. It only took asking the question the 3rd time the staff finally answered the question with an extreme attitude (yes, the DMV certificate fee was included). At that point he was pretty much saying you're NOT welcome here; we have tons of business here with or without you. As a normal guy who just want his smog check done, I naturally take my business somewhere else who welcome their customer a bit better. read more

Zero stars. Beware!! This is my first ever review. I brought my car here never imagining such a horrible experience. One car in the bay and one aheah of me. Once in the filthy office, the service writer "Janice", at least thats the name the technition "Al" later wrote on the back of a business card, said to me that it was going to be 1 1/2 hours before they could get to me and it was better if I came back another time. I asked what time would that be? After lunch she replied. So I thought about it and with only one car being in front of me I told her that I would just wait. When she came with some paperwork for me, she asked me if the seat worked in the car. I looked at her and she said well he's a big boy referring to the technician. I replied yes it does work. She then asked me if the windows work, I replied yes they do work. I filled out the paperwork and she asked me for the key told me she needed to get the mileage off the car. I told her the car was open and I handed her the key. About 15 minutes later my car was in the bay being worked on. About another 15 minutes and Janice returned and said well your car has failed. I asked why. Janice replied it failed the SNAP test. I was shocked. I have owned this car for almost 20 years it has been professionally maintained with recent work being performed. I was told that if I was to come back for a retest I would need to make an appointment and I would not be able to come on Tuesdays or Saturdays. I looked at the numbers that came from the smog machine and as expected everything was in great condition with very low numbers. I called the mechanic that has specialized his entire life working on Hondas, and was advised to contact the Bureau of Automotive repairs.. I have had two people follow me while driving the vehicle trying to observe smoke. We have replicated their SNAP test with no signs of smoke. I return to RPM yesterday because I had some questions. I was harshly stared at by both "Janice and Al" as I approach them and was greeted with a "what's up". I explained that I had had my car in a couple days before and that I contacted the Bureau of Automotive repairs and they had asked me about the smoke that had been witnessed. "Al" said well bring it on up here and I'll show you, looking at my truck. I replied that's not the vehicle you worked on. He said well it's Grey and slapped his hand on the building, the building is Grey. I said oh okay was it a little bit and he replies no "its a lot". I left him to go to the office. I wanted the name of the owner and also the office manager / service writer. The lady known as Janice was not willing to give me any information and said that everything that I needed to know was on the business card. So I pulled a business card and there are no names on there which I made her aware of. She pulled the card from my hand and said she would have him do it , him being the technician. She returned and handed me the card with the names Al and Janice on it. So I asked her is your name Janice? and she replied yes. I asked her if Al was the owner and she said yes. I have found out as listed that the owners name is Roger Larsen. I will be following up with the referee from Bureau of Automotive repairs. I will also be filing a complaint with Bureau of Automotive repairs as well as the Better Business Bureau. At this point in time with the existing crew at this location of RPM Smog on Freeport Boulevard across from the airport, I highly recommend that you make your day better than mine and stay far far away. If they don't want to work on old cars, are afraid of them or think they are they are a sting car, they should just be upfront about it and say we don't work on old cars. The SNAP test is a subjective test. The numbers don't lie. These people are rude, dishonest, and obviously think that they can get away with whatever they want. read more
