They don't even have a cash register, the poor waitress had to make change with her tips and even go into her change purse. The menu is the most confusing I've ever seen. Probably hasn't been updated since they opened in 1992 and somehow have stayed open since. Kudos to them for ripping people off for 29 years. If you've ever wanted to try catfish and okra sushi, this is the place to go. I'll admit, the thing that bugs me most about this location is the absolute lack of atmosphere that other locations provide.. They don't even try here. Random folding tables here and there, mismatched chairs, unappealing decor.. acceptable for a hidden gem or hole in the wall with delicious food, but it makes mediocre RuSan's sushi seem even more mediocre. I give in every time to their lunch buffet, and then after 5 minute I always regret it. 30 minutes later when I my stomach hurts, I really regret it. Rusan's lunch buffet consists of some nigri, your typical sushi rolls, and lots of randomly fried rolls. It's the randomly fried rolls that make you queasy. Tuna + carrot + cream cheese + avocado +salmon skin fried tempura style and then covered in spicy mayo, may seem interesting or even appetizing at first, but is not, I swear, especially when it has been sitting out for a while. Aside from the buffet, Rusan's is okay. It satisfies a sushi craving is you only have $5 in your pocket and drinks are cheap. The same goes for RuSans, i don't go the for a top notch sushi dinner I go for fast food sushi. It's cheap, it's filling and it's ok. one recommendation is the Hamachi-kama, it's actually really good. I could do without the loud techno but whatever thats their thing. The newest RuSan's location is a bit smaller than the others, but they manage to pack in as many customers as humanly possible. There aren't a ton of sushi options in the L5P and EAV area, so RuSan's brings in a big crowd, especially on the weekend. This location doesn't have the TV screens with anime or the cool neon lighting, but the food is dead on even with the other RuSan's locations around town. Which apparently people either love or hate. The manager here is the former manager of the Piedmont location, I think his name is Tim. He's fun to watch whether he's working the floor or behind the bar making orders. A truly infectious laugh... Sushi purists will slam RuSan's and talk about how sushi should never be on a buffet and that it's inferior quality. People who appreciate sushi on a budget will rave about RuSan's and the fun items on the menu. Is it the best sushi in Atlanta? Nope. But it's pretty cheap and it's not like they're putting canned tuna on rice in front of you. I've only been to RuSan's once, and I have no plans to go back. To sum it up: you get what you pay for. The prices are quite reasonable, but it's some pretty suck-ass sushi. When I went, the rice was mushy, the seasoning was non-existent, and the texture of the rice was that of rice that was made many hours ago and been sitting around since then. They do have a fairly creative selection of rolls, but when your ingredients aren't great, it doesn't really matter how funky your roll ideas are. (I'm a bit of a sushi snob, so things like the quality, seasoning, texture, polish and temperature of the rice do play into my evaluation of sushi places. I come here once a week with my friends. We don't come here for the great food or service, but to cut up, drink sake, and be loud and rowdy. We fit in just fine! There's a fun waitress named Iris there, the sushi chefs are fun and talkative when you're at the bar. The sushi is good, but not the main attraction. I wouldn't recommend trying to come here on a weekend, the wait and crowd is outrageous. I usually come on a Tuesday or Wednesday when it's easy to get a seat. I was definitely hesitant to visit this place with a friend the other day but I didn't want to be "difficult" since I'm normally pretty picky when going out with people and normally weasel others into going to my restaurant of choice. This included 5 orders of sushi (3 pieces) and a Plum Wine Sake. There was a great mix of people there - groups, couples on dates, girls having a night out and solo diners at the sushi bar. This place is in a strip mall on Moreland, next door to a Best Buy. It's usually crowded with obnoxious people, has an uncomfortable feel, poor service, bad, stale food and virtually no decor. It's part of a chain of sushi restaurants. Yes, that's right... and I don't know about you, but when I see "chain" and "sushi restaurant" in the same sentence, my next word association is "diarrhea" and "fish that smells like old socks." I used to go to the one in Ansley Park, which was decent (3 stars). This one just sucks. If you want sushi, ride 5 mins. up DeKalb Ave to Sushi Avenue in downtown Decatur, or drop a little more loot and go to Nikimotos in midtown. The new Rubber Band roll... Overall, I'm a Rusan's fan. Point blank - I love sushi and I'm cheap. However, this location stinks. I had late lunch there today and the service was horrible. We waved at our waiter for about 10 minutes before he graced us with his presence. But here is the kicker: we called him over bc there was a rubber band beneath the california roll! He took it away and promised us fresh sushi. What he brought back was the exact same plate plus one extra california roll. And they didn't even remove that item from our bill. Granted cheap sushi is cheap for a reason. I am a big fan of RuSans, in general, as long as you go in knowing what to expect. This is probably my least favorite location of all the RuSans I have visited in Atlanta. I would rank RuSans Tower Place Buckhead first, Ansley Park second and Edgewood last. The menus are slightly different at each place, but not significantly. I always get the sushi. Maybe some of their other items on the menu are good, but I haven't really strayed from the sushi. I almost always get the spider roll and then a bunch of dollar rolls (spicy tuna, tako poki maki, red snapper, rock & roll). We also get the rainbow roll often. Sometime a little chewy and tastes like it could be fresher; other times pretty good. But never had any sicknesses to complain of. All RuSans locations are loud. It is a given. There is loud music playing, the chefs yelling every time a patron enters the door and people banging their table as their sake drops into the glass and is guzzled in true sake bomb fashion. The atmosphere is fun and definitely a good place for a group. Don't know that I would suggest it if you are looking for a nice intimate setting. Since this location is in the Edgewood shopping plaza, there is plenty of free parking. So, worth a go if you are in the neighborhood but don't go too far out of your way. Definitely better sushi options in Atlanta, with more expensive price tags. The choice is yours. read more

After shopping at Edgewood, we wanted to quickly stop by Ru San's to get some Asian cuisine. While it was quick and quite affordable, I would probably go elsewhere the next time I'm looking for a restaurant in that area. The menu is expansive. They have a variety of food and particularly sushi rolls. Perhaps I should have gone for the rolls, but I felt like eating Chicken Teriyaki. The meal came with miso soup and a salad--which were decent. But, the chicken tasted like it had been frozen, boiled then topped with sauce. On top of that, the vegetables were way overcooked. (2.5 stars, for the record) I've learned to like (not love) Ru San's after a few visits and understanding where they stand in my Atlanta sushi arsenal. Don't ever go to Ru San's for a delicate, thoughtful, and luxurious dining experience. Ru San's is more like a sushi diner for quick and inexpensive sushi. Service is typically prompt, but borderline rushed. If it's a busy day, it is definitely rushed. I wouldn't be surprised if the server asked you to stand up, after seeing a few empty plates, so he could access your credit card. Don't go expecting anything less than prompt to rushed service. Timing and meal experience are foreign ideas to the service staff, regardless of how much you spend with a server. The food is hit or miss. I've had a very satisfying meal with good food, but I've also had a borderline gagging experience. Don't ever order anything high-end. I ordered Toro (fatty tuna) and it was horrible, unbelievably horrible, it was partially frozen and unbelievably fatty. I don't expect the world when I order Toro as it is the lower end of the often prized fatty tuna (otoro and chutoro being more highly priced), but the piece I ordered was DISGUSTING!!! Me, nor my guest, will ever forget the low quality of the meat, nor will we ever trust Ru San's for quality or luxury. Back to my intro. Nowadays, I only go to Ru San's at 11:00 a.m. for their buffet for a $9.99 buffet of mostly fresh fish and some of their premium rolls. At the beginning of the buffet (11:00 - 11:15 a.m.) my experiences have always been positive. After, I've left without having a bite of meat/fish (if you can picture a roughed up sushi bar with old fish sitting and spicy mayo). They also have decent fried rice, calamari, and other non sushi/sashimi dishes. If you treat Ru San's as an inexpensive place to get some tuna, salmon, or specialty rolls in a rush and at a very low cost it's great, you should be reasonably satisfied. If you try to compare it to higher quality sushi restaurants, you will be sorely disappointed or, possibly, utterly disgusted. For the record, Ru San's has never claimed to be fine dining; it really tries to be hip, fun, and inexpensive. read more

I love this Ru San's! It has really good service and a very fun atmosphere! Every year on my birthday they remember my favorite dessert and make it special for me (it's is a fried banana in the shape of a phallus with cream puffs-very fun!) I absolutely love the ginger salad and the miso, and they have tempura fried tofu and vegetables that I love! If you go, ask to sit in Brock's section-he is awesome and enthusiastic with his sake bomb yelling! I just wish they had veggie sushi on the dollar menu. Oh and try the baby octopus-I love watching my friends faces when they eat it...it's scary looking! It's been awhile since I've been to this location and I hate to see how much it's gone downhill. The service was good, the miso soup was good, but, unfortunately, the sushi was pretty bad. My rock and roll didn't have the usual sweet bbq sauce on top, it instead was replaced with another type of sauce I didn't really care for. It completely overpowered the roll and I couldn't taste the eel or avocado at all. Tried salmon, scallop and squid nigiri. So much rice! The salmon had decent flavor but I must have got a bad cut because I couldn't bite into it without it pulling the whole piece apart. The scallop was covered in the same sauce as the rock and roll, ugh. The squid looked pretty but didn't taste fresh. I could barely muster to finish it. I went to the Ru San's off Moreland Avenue. Ru San's is one of the most affordable sushi places in the city. It can be described as the McDonald's of sushi in Atlanta. With that being said, definitely don't expect delectable, top-of-the-line sushi. However, always expect really generous $1 sushi specials even at dinner time and peak times. This sushi is just "meh", it's very ricey, the fish is skimpy, and it's not the freshest. However, it is still quite filling (lots of rice) and can be quite tasty when you are very hungry. If you are looking to get really full on passable, sort of tasty sushi for less than $20 (less than $10 at lunch), then Ru San's is where it is. At the Moreland location, the service is friendly and fast. The atmosphere is loud and lively. The sushi chefs are Mexican and they always yell "Sayounara!" and "Arigato!" in their Mexican accents as anyone leaves the restaurant. One undeniable thing is that this place is cheap. First impression after walking in is this place isn't well kept. Not a big deal if they served chicken and waffles, but kind of concerning if you serve raw fish. Started off with yakatori. I don't think it was grilled over a fire. Tastes more like a pan. The best part of the night was watching a big birthday party next to us where the birthday guy had a big squid hat on his head and they were drinking sake bombs. There are generally places with authentic food, and there are places with American *fill in your ethnicity* food. This place seems to be an American Japanese food place. It's by no means bad, and the service is prompt too. But if you're looking for authentic jap food, this is not the place. We ordered ramen but I doubt that we can find anything similar in Japan - the pork was not pork belly, there's a bunch of salad veg in the soup, and the soup base is not pork broth..
