Tonight we celebrated a Georgia Tech Doctoral graduate of Mechanical Engineering with a dinner at Umi and it did not disappoint! Service was on point, the classic cocktails were fabulous and the celebratory champagne was cold and sparkling! Umi has an extensive menu and can be quite overwhelming. Fortunately a friend and former employee of Umi gave us menu suggestions and I'm posting a photo on my review. We order everything she recommends and it's always wonderful! I want to be fair here. It was my daughter's birthday and the restaurant was her choice so our family of four showed up for our 8:15 reservation. Mom bought cupcakes for the celebration and we were informed by first, the hostess and then the manager that there was a $35 "Cake Cutting Fee". I would not have minded something of a fee but $35 was exorbitant so I took the cupcakes back to my car. This first impression left me with a bad taste. Dinner went well enough. I'm not a sushi person but I did have the Chicken Teriyaki. It was ok but nothing extraordinary. I've had better for less. The rest of my family (who love sushi) basically had the same impression about the sushi. our waiter was pleasant and tried really hard after I told him that our evening had started off badly with the manager. My personal highlight was the post dinner coffee which was brewed table side and of very good quality. One other policy that felt really pretentious in my opinion is that the restaurant has a policy of not allowing customers to take home food that might be left over from your meal. The menu states "Keep In Mind When Ordering"! If I've never been to your restaurant, I may not be aware of your portion sizes or any other number of factors that might not allow me to finish my meal including emergencies! Bottom Line, Average Food, Beautiful Building, Pretentious Policies. We won't return!!! read more

**A frightening experience and an even more disturbing response from Umi.** My girlfriend was given a shot by someone we understood to be associated with Umi's after-hours operation. Shortly afterward, she became severely impaired in a way that was completely inconsistent with what she had consumed. Based on what happened and her symptoms, we have serious reason to believe she was given a substance without her knowledge or consent. What happened afterward is one of the reasons I am writing this review. I immediately contacted Umi, explained what had happened, and asked them to investigate and preserve their surveillance footage. Instead of showing the concern and urgency I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber, I eventually received an email from their representative stating: **"At this time, ownership has instructed me to discontinue all further communication regarding this matter."** I was then told that all further correspondence had to go through Umi's attorney. That response speaks for itself. When a customer reports that a woman may have been drugged after being handed a shot in connection with your establishment, I would expect management to be extraordinarily concerned, investigate immediately, and communicate openly with the customer. Instead, ownership instructed its representative to stop communicating with me and sent me to their lawyer. Whatever you think of Umi's food, customers should know how this extremely serious safety complaint was handled. It was frightening enough watching what happened to my girlfriend. Umi's response afterward made the experience even more disturbing. We will never return. read more

Since there were six of us minimum per person order was $100, there was a minimum order of $150 per person if you have eight, that is the minimum cost per person . They don't tell you this policy until it's time to settle the bill, but they do not allow you to split the bill more than five ways regardless of how many are in your party . Which is a unreasonable company policy I believe! Everything was tasty and well prepared . Although when I asked to take a couple of things that were left over home, they refused to allow any food to be taken home raw or cooked! This is another unreasonable company policy. I think the highlight was the lobster Tobo Yaki which was the lobster served over a grill at your table The atmosphere is very lively and loud and it was difficult to hear each other talk. Our server was accommodating, but not always easy to get a hold of. I would consider coming back again, but possibly being more conservative and just have an intimate dinner for two. Umi was everything I expected and more! I came here for my birthday dinner and had the most amazing meal and will never stop raving about the hospitality! The food was absolutely delicious. For appetizers we got the tuna tataki, salmon yuzuviche, spicy tuna crispy rice, and seaweed salad. The crispy rice is a MUST. Absolutely packed with flavor and amazing texture. For mains we got the Black Cod Misoyaki, Rock shrimp tempura, spicy tuna box roll and the hurricane roll. The black cod misoyaki simply blew us away, not an exaggeration. The spicy tuna box roll was not only yummy but also beautiful!! For drinks we got the Paloma and Kyodai-- both great and strong. Umi is absolutely an Atlanta must-try. We went for Valentine's Day and honestly couldn't even tell it was a holiday because the service was that smooth. Service was a 10/10, ambiance was solid, and shoutout to our server Patrick who really made the night. The only real downside was finding the restaurant at night, which was unnecessarily frustrating. Also, the menu is very extensive. If you're Type A or new to sushi, I highly recommend reviewing the menu ahead of time so you're not overwhelmed once you sit down. Food-wise, there were clear standouts. The Wagyu beef carpaccio was unreal. Truly one of the best things I've had and a must-order starter. The miso soup was comforting and flavorful, perfect if you're cold. Drinks were well balanced and not overly sweet, especially the lychee martini and benihime. Sushi and rolls were a mixed bag depending on personal taste. The eel avocado shrimp tempura roll was a favorite, and the American tuna roll was solid. Some nigiri textures just aren't for me yet, but my husband loved them, especially the otoro and salmon options. The baked lobster tempura wasn't bad, just not particularly memorable. Dessert was decent. The angel food cake was enjoyable, but the donut wasn't my thing since it was filled. That one comes down to preference. I finally was able to make it to Umi. I've heard soooo many amazing things but of course had to be the judge myself. As a sushi lover I had VERY high expectations and they exceeded in every aspect. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance strikes the perfect balance between upscale and inviting dim lighting, sleek design, and an energy that feels special without being pretentious. The service is consistently top tier. Knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the menu, the staff makes thoughtful recommendations and times each course perfectly. You never feel rushed, yet everything flows seamlessly. We started with the jalapeño yellowtail, which was bright, fresh, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. Our server recommended the Sake Aioli nigiri, which was an absolute standout. Rich yet clean and beautifully layered. Umi is located in Buckhead Village, and comes highly recommended. We decided to head over there and the ambiance was super nice. Parking options are the self parking deck or valet. Being a sushi fanatic, I was super excited about this place. The server was super nice and helped us pick a few items from the menu. We ended up getting the Kamikaze roll, Hurricane Roll, Saki Aioli Nigiri and Otoro Caviar Nigiri. I was super underwhelmed! Umi is one of the better options for sushi in Atlanta. The location is ideal. There's a green space outside of the restaurant that is so nice in any season but winter. It's usually a bit windy. The door to Umi is unassuming and can be easily missed. When requesting a reservation ask not to be seated on the patio in winter. It can be quite chilly even though it is enclosed and it is VERY dark. The main dining area is the most desirable. By all means, let them know you do not want to sit in the area by the hostess area. It is a very busy walkway and you can feel the cold air every time the door is opened. The waitstaff is very friendly and accommodating. They are quite knowledgeable about the different sushi. They also have vegetarian options. The rock shrimp are amazing and we've never missed the opportunity to have them. Always a favorite. The edamame is ok. I can't recall what roll I had but I enjoyed it. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura was amazing and flavorful! She also ordered the miso cod which was some of the BEST cod I've ever tasted. It was buttery, smooth, and just decadent - a true explosion of flavors. The main entrance is easy to miss, but once we found our way inside, we had an excellent dining experience for our anniversary. My favorite dishes were the nigiri (sake aioli and madai - red snapper) and the tuna carpaccio starter. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. For some reason, the restaurant is very loud. It was great for an anniversary dinner, but would be terrible for a first date. The servers were very nice, and I appreciated how promptly they grabbed plates to create space at our small table. Came here on a Monday night, sat at the bar. The food was so fresh and there wasn't anything I ordered I didn't like. The Chilean sea bass was my favorite, it was cooked perfectly. We came to Umi with a reservation on a Wednesday night, completely oblivious to the World Cup semifinal. It was so busy and backed up with all the visitors, we ended up having to wait almost 40 minutes for a table despite our reservation. Normally that would be grounds for a much lower rating but the staff was absolutely incredible! They apologized profusely and had drinks and appetizers sent to the table. The manager spoke to us personally and gave us options so we never felt like we were waiting around, the amazing hostesses handled a huge number of restless parties with a smile despite some less-than-pleasant guests, and our wonderful waitress Kayi was so friendly, attentive, and helpful. Umi is Atlanta's punchline to the joke that is Nobu. If you've had high-end Japanese food, this menu will look familiar. Seviche / tiradito of various types? Yup. Sweet, spicy fried rock shrimp? Yup. Beautiful fish quality? You bet. Nice assortment of chef made rolls as well as nigiri / sashimi? Yes and yes. This menu is HIGHLY derivative, but that doesn't mean it isn't done correctly. Restaurant is beautiful, great list of Sake (unfiltered available like we like), the "don't touch my donut dessert" was fabulously filled, and the "box sushi" that is pressed with no seaweed binder was a really pleasant and light way to eat a roll. Service was friendly, and we especially enjoyed table-side pour-over coffee with our dessert. This place looks and is expensive, but not totally out of bounds given quality and quantity. We a $50 bottle of sake, 2 starters, 2 rolls, a hot dish, the box sushi, a dessert and coffee we looked at ~$140/person including tip which was more or less expected if not on the kinder side. After years and years of dropping not-so-subtle hints like "I hear Umi has the best sushi in Atlanta, we should go" or "what if we go to Umi, I'm always hearing amazing things about it", hint 7,892 clicked and reservations were made. And we were not disappointed! The inside is hip and "cool" and very dark. I had to run my hands along the bathroom wall to find the door knob. If it's cool to not be able to see things, oh how I want to be cool. We were seated in the atrium area so my limited human eyes were able to read the menu and see our food with daylight still shining bright outside. Our server was professional and guided us through some of the fan favorite menu items. The freshness and flavor of every bite of fish is unreal. We wanted to sample one of everything ~on the entire menu~ but our dollar bills were limited. I couldn't pinpoint a favorite since it was all top notch but then the donut at the end reset my brain. Perfection Rock shrimp (5/5) yes please. Crispy goodness not too breaded or sauced and a perfect treat to pop in your mouth. Toro caviar (6/5) really just that good. Again perfect dish to rice ratio and topped off with some decadence to seal the deal Dessert we had this special donut with ice cream/custard in the middle that we shared perfectly warm crispy and not too sweet. The evening ended with some truffles and let's just say we left will happy bellies. Excellent service and the food just hit all the spots. OMG. This is hands-down my new favorite sushi spot--it's truly a 5-star experience. Why have y'all been gate keeping? The ambiance, the service, and the food are top tier. I've been raving about it to all my friends, and trust me, they need to try it. While the sushi is obviously the best I've had in the city, there are a few standouts I can't not mention: the spicy tuna crispy rice is phenomenal, the salmon yuzuviche is absolutely delicious, the yellowtail jalapeño is my personal favorite, the wagyu is seasoned to perfection and so flavorful, and the baked lobster is incredible. Umi was such a great date night sushi spot in Buckhead and probably my favorite sushi in the area! They get absolutely packed so make sure you have a reservation before you go! I'm not sure why they don't validate for self parking ($14 for 2 hours), but valet is only $2 so it's clearly the better choice. The inside is really nice and I love the decor, but you could tell they try to fit as many people as possible in the restaurant because we were SO CLOSE to the people next to us we even had a laugh with them about now having a 4 person dinner. The service was phenomenal and super fast too! I don't think we even had to ask for water refills which is huge because my bf downs his water lol. We shared the fatty tuna Osaka box roll and the hurricane and typhoon rolls. The box roll isn't bad, I've had better at other sushi spots. The hurricane and typhoon rolls were fantastic, especially the hurricane one! Get it if you're a salmon lover!! We ended the night with the donut and the crème brûlée desserts. They were both great 10/10 desserts so would highly recommend them. Tbh price actually wasn't too bad for all the food we got!!
