June 1st, 2026, I brought my son here for an early dinner. I am a pescatarian, and my son is a vegetarian. I ordered the blackened salmon burrito, and my son ordered the sweet potato burrito. I ordered a fountain drink as well. I went over to get the agua fresca from the dispenser, and a fly fell out of it into my cup. I asked for another cup and explained what had taken place, and was immediately given a new cup. I ended up getting a soda instead because I felt that they should have removed the contaminated drink but no one said anything and they kept taking orders. My son and I went and found a table and waited for our food to be brought out. Once it arrived, I must say that the food was excellent, and we almost ordered a second burrito to go for later, but the line had gotten long by then, and people were standing around waiting for their order to be completed. My wife and I had lunch there on Monday, June 29, 2026. For background, I am a retired Executive Chef with more than 22 years of experience, progressing from a line cook to Executive Chef, running an operation serving more than a couple of thousand customers per day across three kitchens. I ordered a 2-piece battered filet; my wife ordered the trio shrimp taco. The batter is over-seasoned, and the fish looks overcooked, or the cook used leftover frying oil. Thus, it overwhelms the real taste of fresh fish. I suggest that the creator of the recipe go back to the kitchen and start developing a signature batter for fish from the basic English, Japanese, or both recipes that is simple, light, and extra-crispy to enhance rather than mask the taste of fresh fish. The shrimps in my wife's tacos were cooked just right and really brought up the flavor of the whole dish. The beans looked fine but very bland. I suggest cooking the beans in a seasoned flavored stock rather than just boiling them in plain water. Several tables were dirty, and the one we first picked was, so we moved to another. We spent about 15-20 minutes there, but I have not seen anyone coming out to clean the tables. read more

Horrible service, the person on the register had a thick accent and did not know the Rubios menu at all. She could not understand when I asked to add something to an entree that I ordered and flat out said I couldn't add anything. It definitely wasn't my first time at Rubios and I knew she had no idea what she was talking about so I changed my mind and decided not to order anything. My fiancé gave her a chance and made his to go order, which she had a hard time understanding and even needed help with finding how to charge a quesadilla on the register. As we waited for my fiancés food, she proceeded to plead her case on why I couldn't add something to my order and even supposedly checked with the manager before coming back to confirm with me. Totally unnecessary. We get home and of course the order is completely messed up- the tacos were the wrong type and nothing was how my fiancé had ordered it. We love Rubios ! After doing some errands we stopped at this Rubios for some lunch. I got my favorite the Classic grilled Shrimp Burrito. It was good but I felt it had more beans and less shrimp then usual. My husband got the Coastal trio, he enjoyed it but felt 3 shrimp were few for a shrimp taco. We come here often. The service is always great. We enjoy Rubio's because it just has healthier than other fast food options in the area. We always switch up and this is my children's favorite go to fast food place. The have a nice variety of hot sauces and a good mix of drinks. The menu is great for anyone. I here come often, maybe once or twice a week ... at least. The food here is like any other rubios, you should know what to expect, you like it or you don't. I personally have never had an issue with my order. The service here, though, is amazing. I would like to take a moment and recognize the staff. They are always friendly, helpful, place is clean... etc.... Ok, so here we go... Most times when I come to this specific Rubios location, there's a girl who comes in, maybe a teenager... not sure. I don't want to mention her name for privacy, but she has some.... limitations. You can tell she absolutely loves coming here, she literally lights up when she walks through the doors. Every time I've seen her, almost every single staff member on duty acknowledges her like she's the most important human being on the planet! She seems to love engaging and conversing with them, I think she knows them by name, and she even has her own order thats called it out when she walks in. Although the staff makes it seem like it's a normal, pleasant part of their day, It's one of the most beautiful acts of kindness I have ever witnessed from a single group of people in my life. read more

I have been going to this Rubio's for years. The business was busy, noisy, full of happy diners. A lot of them came directly from the movie theater. We hadn't been there for awhile. So it looked so CLEAN when I walked in. Just a few people. It was a little later than normal dinner. We ordered two coastal trios. They were...ok. The shrimp taco had 5 or 6 TINY shrimp and lots of salad. Not much flavor. And I added 2 salsas & lime. The mahi mahi was almost bland. Also devoid of the usual Rubio's good flavor. The original fish taco? Ok. I was VERY disappointed. I have never been to a Rubio's where I was sorry I ordered. I'm going to be trying out some other local Rubio's. I hope they haven't "improved." The order was missing the guacamole. This was the second time this side was omitted from my order. I spoke with the manager and agreed I would PU on another day. The next day when picking up I was given a small bag of chips. This was not as pictured nor what I got in the past. The server stated the order was correct. Stopped in for lunch with the girls. While I love the chipotle ranch salad with shrimp at Rubio's, I was not a fan of it here! At 1st glance, it looked as yummy as always, then I found the dressing! Basically I had ranch dressing with a side of salad... no good. Unfortunately, the shrimp was even worse! It was extremely salty. The service was great, the restaurant was clean, and a good location with plenty of parking. I would give this location another try but next time I'll be sure to ask for the ranch on the side and maybe chicken instead of shrimp! Ps. Try the salads here! They are fresh, creative and delicious! Their counter service is always pleasant.

The BIGGEST advice I'm going to give to all customers, is CHECK your order before you leave! We came in for takeout, and ordered a California burrito and they gave us a bean burrito. Sadly, we didn't notice until we got home. Its our fault too, for not checking. We should know better by now, because this is not the first time it's happened (never fails always something missing or wrong with our order). (Also ordered two bowl meals and a kids meal). I really enjoy this location and would recommend it to anyone wanting ethical, healthy seafood or Mexican. If you've never tried Rubio's, I recommend starting with fish tacos. The tacos especiale come with guacamole, so they're even tastier. The chain began after the founder took a surf trip through Baja (Mexico) and fell in love with fish tacos. When he couldn't find any good quality fish tacos in San Diego, he bought the recipe and started a business. In the early days of this business, my mom and her siblings fell in love with their products, so I grew up hearing the above story. The food is good and it used to be quick and efficient when ordering online (I live in RSD & I've been a regular to this location for the past 12 years)but the last couple of times I went (around 6) I got there late but still had to 40 min. It took almost an hour for me to get my food and some other people who ordered after me got their meals before me. I noticed some new workers and I don't know if it's under new management or what the problem is. When I used to walk in to pick up my order I would see bags of online orders waiting on the shelves but the last two times I went there were no bags on the shelves and just people waiting around looking annoyed. Dumping the guacamole on my large order of chips was not a good idea on a to go order...the portion of guacamole covered about half the amount of chips. The tacos in one of our orders were cold. I enjoy going to the Rancho San Diego location. Parking is easy, restaurant is clean, and always had good customer service! They are very lenient when it comes to substitutions which is a plus. I don't care for beans at all so I always opt for extra rice. I love to drown the rice in their green salsa they have at the salsa bar. It's common sense that when a customer walks in and is waiting at the register to order an employee should welcome them and say for example "hi we will be with you in a moment" instead it's complete opposite.
