I really really wanted to like this. I was disappointed. First I want to say the service was excellent. One person by himself. He was so nice and friendly. That being said. The food was just ok. Fried pickles were good. Hush puppies were burnt but had good flavor. Gizzards were inedible. Burnt and chewy. Catfish was ok. Cod was both wet and dry at the same time which I didn't understand. Hidden gem in San Diego. If you want fried shrimp, chicken, or fish you must go. There was no wait and the cashier was helpful in choosing the meal for the best value. Was craving some seafood and did not want to spend an arm and leg while in San Diego. My brother and I were just looking for a casual place to order to-go and take back to our airBnB to eat and this place was perfect! It is super casual and literally a order to-go place only as it is located inside a liquor store and there is no seating around. They open later until 10pm. Parking was easy. It is located inside a strip mall. The prices here were great for seafood. We both got the combo which was $18 which came with your choice of fried fish (2 pieces) and either oysters (3), whole wings (3), tenders (2), shrimp (5) along with your choice of side (fries, macaroni salad, or coleslaw and 2 slices of bread. No drink however. I got my combo with cod, shrimp, and fries. My brother got his with catfish, wings, and coleslaw. It was alot of food and very filling! I did like the catfish better than the cod. Everything tasted fresh and they cooked everything so order... so no fried foods sitting under a heat lamp! All the stuff was crispy and tasty! The cashier was friendly and food came out quick. I moved back into the area about a month ago and I stumbled upon Captain Sam's while venturing to the liquor store that it is located in. This is my first restaurant I've been in that is inside of a liquor store so I of course was thrown off. The staff is always so kind and willing to help you decide what to order. I've been here about 3 times which is saying a lot for me being in the area such little time. The food is absolutely delicious and always cooked to perfection. The seasoning they dust on the food makes everything come together in harmony. I always recommend this spot as the pricing isn't too bad either. To make things even more convenient it is located inside of a store where you can grab whatever drink to accommodate to your meal! read more

My hubby and I ordered food at this location and we were very disappointed. The fried chicken, shrimp, catfish and pickles all tasted the same. The catfish wasn't cooked thoroughly and the fried pickles were fried hard. We usually order from the Home Avenue location and have never had any complaints. Food was hot and fresh. Service was pleasant. I wouldn't purchase from the liquor store itself. The prices were kinda high for a drink. But the food was better than a lot of other fish places. The fish seems really fresh; had to pick a few bones out. The taste was definitely better than most in my opinion. May need to ask them to go lite on the seasoning after it's cooked. I'll definitely be back for lunch. And reasonably priced compared to most places for the amount of food you get. At least in my opinion. I would give them a 4.5, but it won't let me. read more

Goodness. This place is fantastic. As someone who's been to New Orleans a few times, the fried catfish here is absolutely amazing. Everything is seasoned with lemon pepper. The fried zucchini had a perfect crispy coat of breading. My husband went crazy for the corn nuggets. And I'm not even a big shrimp fan, but their shrimp was insanely good. Me and my wife randomly found this spot. Ordered the fish and fries and man was the food delicious. Fish and fries were cooked to perfection. Customer service was very friendly. We almost forgot our food and the employee ran out to make sure we didn't leave without it. The location is setup inside a liquor store in the very back so it's kinda hard to spot. Fish pieces are small and thin. The rock fish had bones it in. Tartar sauce came in a packet and was warm. Macaroni salad was sub par. It comes with a slice of white bread that was soggy because they put in under the food. Will not be going here again. read more

Found this place online while looking for fish n chips. My Husband was so excited. He ordered fish…read moren chips, onion rings and some Zuchini. Everything is battered dipped. Not panko. Yay! That is the plus! Price was $13.00 and portion was big. Comes with tartar sauce and ranch. Sorry I didn't take a photo. He enjoyed it very much. He said he will definitely come back again. The owner was very friendly and helpful when ordering. For a quick meal this is the place. Located inside the Grossmont Mall food court
