Surprisingly good and authentic! I was told my a friend about Rubio's 40th anniversary. I usually don't go to these chain stores for tacos because they look too corporate to me. I usually go to Santa Ana for some authentic tacos, but Rubio's promotion is hard to pass.......$1 fish tacos with other purchase. I'm game! We proceed to download the app and order with coupon code and start driving. Upon arrival, there's a long line out of the door. I wasn't sure if I should line up for pick up, but I was able to flag down a staff when she was sending food to tables. She is awesome! She went to the prep table and got my order. Nothing beats freshly battered/fried fish! My only regret is not ordering more earlier. Now the line is getting so long so it will be a wait if I want more. All in all, great experience. Also had two fish tacos and the shrimp taco trio. We liked all of our entrees. I especially liked the citrus rice in my bowl...very tasty and good with the lettuce, guacamole and shrimp. This is one of a few restaurants near my work, and occasionally I like something different, so I will wander in here for lunch. The service is generally pretty flat, not much communication between the employees as you order, or when they drop off your food. The salsa bar is always a bit of a mess. The last time I ate here, the employee who took my order, was extremely sick, I would bet on Bronchitis from the sounds of her deep cough that she coughed into her sleeve, or just out in the open, not covering her mouth. She also served my food, which really bummed me out. One thing I have consistently noticed here, the food when it arrives at your table, is at best room temperature - but usually cold. Im not sure if it sits in the back too long, not under a heat lamp, or what the issue is, but its been every time I have eaten here. read more

Came here for an early lunch at 11am on a Monday before rush hour. I ordered the wild mahi mahi taco with mango. I love that the fish was wild and not farmed. I liked that there was a healthy option of a green salad on the side rather than a bowl of chips. The taco was tasty. Also ordered the mango and veg salad. It was a bit soggy and could have done with extra mango. The unsweetened green tea with passion fruit drink was neither iced nor hot. It was room temperature which was odd. Would've been yummy if it was warmer. There is a bit of construction on at this location so the windows are blocked and do not have a view. Parking was easy to find at the time I arrived. I love Rubio's as a franchise and they have the best salmon bowls of any restaurant, but this particular Rubio's seems to have issues with the freshness of their bowls. I came in and ordered the Cilantro Lime Quinoa bowl, with grilled salmon and both times(this was weeks apart), I experienced abdominal cramps and diarrhea the next morning. I never have this reaction to any other food I eat. Something is going wrong back in the kitchen, either the fish isn't getting cooked long enough or it's sitting out too long or perhaps an employee is not washing their hands, I'm not sure what. Also, I agree with several of the other reviewers here, many times the person taking the order(usually teens) has been unfriendly at best, downright rude at worst. The one exception is the middle-aged hispanic guy, he is always very friendly. read more

I live in IRVINE and I was heartbroken when the Rubio's and the Tustin marketplace closed. Now I drive a little bit out of the way to the IRVINE one, on Harvard. The main reason I go here is for the salsa, Verity, shrimp, taco, and roasted chipotle salsa.... Roasted chipotle salsa is not the same as it used to be. It's two tomato or it's extremely spicy like painfully spicy.... The shrimp taco is OK., but just OK. I got into a discussion with a lady at the salsa bar. They drove all the way down from the state of Washington and made a B line for the first Rubio's. They could find because all of the Rubio is closed up there, and I explained to her that most of the Rubio's in California closed too.... The first thing she said to me was the roasted chipotle. Salsa is not the same anymore..... can you please keep the recipe the same and the quality of the food the same? We are all heartbroken that many of these restaurants closed and when we do find one, we want what we used to have.... The same flavors., the same consistency. We love your food. I love the balsamic roasted veggie salad with salmon here. It is my go to meal. Very nice salsa bar, the green is my favorite. Service was nice here, just pretty slow, expect to wait 10-15 minutes even without a line. Not a huge fan f this location, while the salad was large, the lettuce was wilted, two pieces of salmon instead of one, but they were over cooked and poor quality. With tip, I basically spent $20.00 for stale chips and a couple pieces of chicken and barely a sprinkle of cheese. I grew to love Rubio's during college, since they had one on my campus. I'm a huge fan of their bowls but I often have their seafood tacos, since there's not many other places that make seafood-based Mexican food as clean as Rubio's does. I actually hadn't eaten Rubio's in a while, but ordered for pick up since I was craving it one day. Their online system is pretty efficient, even though the app says that the food prep will take a longer than it really does. The staff at this location is pretty nice and food is always prepared pretty promptly. Wish they hooked it up more with the chips because it never seems to be enough but that's probably just me because I am a fiend for chips hahaha. They do give a ton of salsas though, which I guess is a plus even though it's free LOL. read more

Came here on Monday, stopped in during our drive back to LA on Labor Day. We ordered the large guac and chips. Decent size but the guac didn't have much flavor and was really just avocado - no tomato or onion etc We both ordered the baja trio. I asked for my sauces on the side but I guess that wasn't clear enough since the white sauce and the salsa were on the side but the pink sauce was kept on the other two tacos. I think they were training a new employee so perhaps that is why the mix up occurred. They also charged us for just the trios and guac but not the meals as we had requested so we didn't get drinks since we had already paid before they caught their error of charging incorrectly. The best part of the middle taco was the corn, the chicken lacked flavor and the pink sauce was odd. The tortillas tasted rubbery and were not my favorite. The fish taco was by far the better of the trio. It was nice that they had a bar with pre-cut limes for flavor. Would consider trying Rubio's again but would order something else. read more

I was assisted by Aran on my visit to Rubio's in the Irvine location. He was just clocking in with the touch screen and proceeded to call me to the register to help. He never once washed his hands or used hand sanitizer. When I asked if he can package my to go order with a couple forks, he grabbed the forks at the very top of the "head" with his unclean hand. During this time with the COVID virus, I feel he should have washed his hands or use hand sanitizer after clocking in by using a touch screen that had fingerprints all over it and carelessly handling utensils. If this isn't common practice by staff, they should be trained before customers potentially fall ill. The food itself was fine. We ordered two Cilantro Lime Quinoa Bowls, Pan Seared Shrimp and Grilled Chicken. For the price, I would expect my quinoa bowl to have more than just a handful of small shrimp though there was a good amount of chicken. Wait time was a bit longer than I've experienced at other locations so I'd recommend ordering online if you're in a hurry. read more

My husband and I love Rubio's, we have never had any problems until today. Aaron was very rude and unprofessional, I ordered my usual but my husband was still undecided. Aaron in a rude tone kept asking us "anything else? Anything else?" Over and over, when our order was ready we notice a bag of chips was missing (also the bag was not even half way full) I came back and in a very polite way say "Hi, we are missing a bag of chips" Aaron left without saying a word and came back with it. (One of his coworkers told him to give us an extra bag of chips and he replied nah) My husband and I said "thank you", Aaron just turned around without saying anything, I then again said THANK YOU while his back was turned on us he said OK. Rubios is delicious, their gourmet shrimp tacos, original fish tacos, chicken tacos, mahi or salmon burritos are SO GOOD! I know it is not 'Authentic Mexican' but heck its got great flavor, a great menu range with fresh fish! Rubios is one of my favorite eats. I like Rubios because the food is always fresh and while it takes awhile to get your order sometimes, it is usually well constructed. I am a hard order because I basically take a burrito and completely deconstruct it to remove a bunch of unhealthy stuff and then add in some other things like lettuce or cabbage. I kind of feel sorry for the cashier at times but they are good sports. I got two Shrimp burritos and they were excellent. What I really wish is that they still had a whole grain or wheat tortilla because that is a pretty standard practice at everywhere from Sharkey's to Baja Fresh. Also, their burritos were larger than usual which was nice. Rubio's tends to be on the small side compared to other places. It's also pricier than most other fast casual chains. Their salsa bar is great if you like spicy salsa. I go for the hottest one they have and it's consistent. It won't make you feel like you are in Mexico eating off a taco cart but the salsa does the job. The store is also clean which is a must in my opinion. Nobody wants to sit on someone else's food. read more

I ordered the 2 taco Shrimp plate with rice and beans. The pinto beans were so bland & watery. The rice was absolutely flavorless. The staff here seriously needs some help. It took over 35 minutes to get 4 fish tacos and a shrimp burrito. There seemed to be a lot of disconnect between the kitchen and the kid taking orders as well. Turns out our fish tacos were sitting in the counter for 20 minutes before the one shrimp burrito came out so they were all cold and soggy by the time we got home. You usually don't put sustainable seafood and fast food in the same sentence however you'll be surprised by what's happening at Rubio's lately. My fondest memories of dining at Rubio's date back to 2007. I had just moved to Orange County and of course, I had no food at the new place. I was shopping for some supplies and spotted a Rubio's. I had never been to one so I decided to give it a try. Imagine my surprise when I realized they had vanilla Coke as one of their soft drinks and a menu I'd come to love until this very day. While out and about on our weekend adventures, I was feeling a bit nostalgic so we wandered into Rubio's to see what was new. Much to our delight, if you check-in on Foursquare or Yelp, you are immediately offered a FREE order of their new Fire Roasted Corn Guacamole and Chips. I love guacamole and this was a perfect addition to our meal. I just wish there has been more guacamole on our chips because I'm an absolute fiend when it comes to avocados and corn. For me, it was the perfect pairing. Rubio's is currently featuring their Coastal Trio which is a showcase of their sustainable seafood. The three sustainable tacos are: The Original Fish Taco (a signature recipe that started it all in 1983), Salsa Verde Shrimp Taco (Shrimp, pan-seared and topped with salsa verde), and the Regal Springs Tilapia Taco (Grilled or Blackened Regal Springs Tilapia topped with creamy chipotle sauce and Serrano slaw). They each have some amazing flavor components but my favorite was the Salsa Verde Shrimp Taco. The flavor combinations are unbelievable and just the right amount of heat for my palate. Rubio's has a great selection of sauces to accompany any dish they serve however I felt the sauces would take away from the tacos and saved those for my remaining chips. The boy decided to go traditional and ordered the Beer Battered Fish Burrito. And guess what? It's also sustainable like the rest of the menu. This burrito is a mix of sustainable wild Alaska Pollock, caught in Alaska's icy ocean waters, hand-dipped in signature seasoned beer batter and cooked to crispy perfection. It is wrapped in a toasted flour or whole grain tortilla with handmade guacamole, black beans, Rubio's white sauce, mild salsa, sour cream, shredded cabbage and a cilantro/onion mix. I only got a few bites of this lovely burrito before he demolished it all. read more
