Myself and my friend ended up eating here at Brunch on a Monday. It was quiet so that was nice. Our waitress was nice enough. My friend ordered the white chocolate chip pancakes and she said they were good, but very sweet. My beef was with the gluten free options and serving sizes. I ordered a southern breakfast. It comes with a biscuit and a fried green tomato, neither of which I can have due to the gluten. So I asked about substituting for the items that contained gluten. They had gluten free toast as an option, which if you've ever tried gluten free bread it's pretty awful. I asked if instead I could just sub tater tots for the biscuit and tomato. Sure, the waitress said.... For a $3 up charge! I declined. Could I double the grits instead? Nope. Can't do that! So I ended up with an absolutely pathetic breakfast for a whopping $13! I'm talking a tiny pile of eggs (supposedly 2, must be the small eggs), two thin slices of bacon, and maybe a 1/2 cup of grits. Plus a very small bowl of fruit. I left hungry. I will never eat here again, it's just not worth it. With the number of gluten free people increasing in the world, I expected Ruby Sunshine to be more inclusive, especially since breakfast is fairly easy to make gluten free. Came here for breakfast. I was very happy to see a new breakfast place in Homewood so I was excited to go here. This restaurant is in the old Bar Taco location. I liked the way they designed the interior. It looks really good. Outside area is not as nice as it was previously but it's still nice. We chose to sit outside since it was still early and not too hot out. Our drink order was taken right away and drinks came out pretty fast. However, it took a really long time for our food order to be taken and it really wasn't very busy. Once our food order was finally taken, the food came out pretty quick. I got the pancake duo where you can pick any of two pancakes. I chose the white chocolate bread pudding which is always on the menu and the special pancake which was the creme brulee pancake. The creme brulee pancake was really good. The white chocolate bread pudding one was more like bread pudding than a pancake. I did not care for it. Fortunately, the other pancake was big enough that that was enough for me. The pancakes came with two pieces of bacon. Bacon was really good. Thick and crisp. My friend got the French toast and added strawberries to it. She really liked it. However, i was shocked at how few strawberries were added to the top. Literally looked like two strawberries cut up and that's it. That's all you got for an extra charge of TWO DOLLARS! Outrageous. Once we were done eating it also took a long time to get the check. At this point I was getting annoyed as it started to get really hot and we were kept waiting for the bill. Would hate to see what it's like on the weekend. Decided to come here on a Saturday morning for some brunch without a reservation. That was almost a huge mistake. There was a HUGE wait. We almost turned around and left, but we decided to persevere. I'm glad we did. This is located in the old Bar Taco area (poor one out for Bar Taco) which means not much parking - be prepared to walk some or stalk people to their parking spots. While I'm not a big fan of biscuits, there are plenty of other options on the menu, including an ala carte section. I decided on the avacado toast, with a side of candied bacon as a 'dessert'. I wish there had been more of the candied bacon! The avacado toast with salmon on it was very tasty, and I would definitely order it again. I also had a breakfast margarita, and it was good as well. 4th times the charm. I have been trying to stop by for lunch/brunch since it opened and looking forward to it ever since it was announced. Unfortunately the parking in this area has prevented me from doing so before now. The parking situation is the only reason for this not being 5 *. The atmosphere and decor is great, service was wonderful and the Food was amazing! I certainly see where the reputation comes from at their other locations. After consulting with my server, I opted for the 3 Little Pigs Omelet (Applewood Smoked Bacon, Ham & Sausage with Swiss Cheese), a side of Cheesy Grits and a Buttermilk Biscuit. The light & fluffy eggs of the omelet was packed full of protein. The sausage was a Conecuh style smoked sausage instead of the expected breakfast style crumbled sausage. Which made it even better IMO. The grits were some of the creamiest I have ever had. A bit more cheese would be to my liking but probably was enough for the average person. (I can't recall ever thinking something had too much cheese for my taste.) The biscuit (most of which I saved for breakfast the next morning) was a huge throwback my grandmothers Sunday morning Cathead biscuits. I have been waiting on this to happen for so long. I have eaten at the different locations in New Orleans and Gulf Shores and I must say that this is the first time that I've been to a restaurant that all the locations taste the same. With this being brand new to our area, please be patient because on the weekend there will be a wait but it's worth it. Our server seated us and we already knew what we wanted to eat. Our meal was hot and fresh and everyone received what they ordered. We had a few hang ups but the manager Jessica was eager and willing to make sure we had a great experience. This last weekend, I went to Ruby Sunshine for a second time because I thought it was only fair to give them a second shot. It was once again good but not amazing. The food: There is a good mix of savory and sweet starters. Since I am more of a savory breakfast person, me and my dining companion selected a sweet starter. The first time we got the beignets. They were a bit heavy, but they came with a delicious dipping sauce. This most recent visit, we got the French toast bites. I think I liked them a bit more and they had a generous serving for a starter. My only complaint is that they seemed slightly over cooked. The sauce was a Praline sauce. Amazing. Both times I have gone, I have gotten eggs Benedict- as has my dining partner. We have tried 5 different ones. Getting a true poached egg is hit or miss. We both had one perfectly poached egg and one that did not have the true runny yolk. My second one was a bit closer to poached than my friend's. I got the veggie one with the tomato, and the tomato was too juicy. So the Benedict became a bit of a mess. My friend got two different ones - the pork one and the chicken st Charles. We both felt the hollandaise sauce was too thick/heavy. The biscuit was tasty. Drinks: tea selection was very limited. Nothing special about the OJ. Friend had the coffee. Atmosphere/seating: The location has a small but adequate parking lot, which is nice. The best part is the patio. Nice and big. We sat outside the first time bc it was a nice day with the heaters to keep us warm. We sat inside this time, and it was nothing special. TVs and music. Overall, I would give this a 3.5. I understand you like positive reviews and you might not have liked my honesty the 1st time around. But deleting people's reviews is blatant stacking positive reviews and not right of you as a company. I keep it honest . It's probably not fair for me to use this review to talk about how much I miss Bartaco which used to live in this building, so I won't... Ruby Sunshine is a fun addition to Birmingham's brunch scene. In my opinion, you can never have enough Louisiana food available! Since most of us have been in this venue before, we know that it's a great, light, airy space that allows for a cheerful, buzzing atmosphere without seeming too loud: This is perfect for the brunch crowd. It took me a geriatric minute to figure out the QR code menu (never mind that I'm in my 20s), but I appreciated their efforts to keep things as contactless as possible as I know from food service experience how disgusting menus can get. The fare is good, old-fashioned Southern food with a New Orleans twist. Therefore, I wanted to test out the classic biscuits and gravy, and they passed my comfort food parameters with flying colors! We checked in at 10:18 with a party of five and gave up at 12:30 to eat elsewhere. At 1:37, we got a text saying our table was ready. 3+ hours for a table? What irritates me is that they refused to give a time estimate even after we asked 3 times. We checked in expecting an early brunch not a late lunch. Had they just been honest and told us it would be 2-3 hours we could have made an informed decision. This kind of of disregard for clients has no place in the service industry. My complaint isn't that they were busy, it's that they didn't respect our time enough to give us a heads up. Their check in system makes no sense. After waiting two hours the hostess finally admitted that 19 tables were still ahead of us because they place online check ins ahead of customers actually standing there wanting to spend money. So so yummy!!! The atmosphere is great and the music they is play is slay. I always get the creamy vanilla iced coffee and it never disappoints. Their eggs benedict dishes are no joke! Our new favorite brunch spot in town! Since we went for the first time this Summer, we have been there five times. I have to say, I miss the taco place (Bartaco) Ruby replaced, but I'm glad they ended up taking over such a great facility. The outdoor patios are just too good to be true. You can dine it outside during covid, you can bring the dog, you can take in the winter fresh air while under their heating lamps and gas heaters (when they don't forget to replace the propane tanks!). Food is always delicious! By now we explored a good bit of their menu and not one time we got anything disappointing. I have to say, I wished they used less salt on their meals. One time I got a bit of a headache after having their corned beef entree. It was really, really, salty. But also all the other entrees could use less salt and still have plenty. I also hope they will vary their menu over time. All said, food is great, and please try their beignet. Sure, not as good as the ones you would get in NOLA, but their seasonal interpretations are actually really good! A 6 stars go to their service. I really get impressed every time we go on how nice, professional, and accommodating their wait staff is. I cannot think of any other place with such professional staff during brunch hours. This was my first time at Ruby Sunshine and heard some great things, so decided to check it out. The place is not surprisingly VERY busy on the weekend so we tried the online waitlist on Yelp before leaving home to cut down the wait time, which I would HIGHLY recommend. The food is amazing, very big portions. I got the Bananas Foster french toast which was the right amount of sweet and a perfect flavor combination with the raisins. I loved that there was a side of bacon with it because I am a big fan of something sweet and salty with me food. The omelets looked amazing with a great big biscuit. The only downsides I would say is that the stuffed French Toast seemed to have a bit too much Nutella in it. Also, the waitress seemed to be in a big hurry to get us out of there; she gave us the to-go boxes when we were only halfway done eating after about 10-15 minutes. I guess it was because of the rush. My wife and I love to try new restaurants, but always strikeout. Either the service is good or the food is good. Never both. Well this place hit on all elements!! We got on it via your website at 9:00 and it notified us of a 15-20 minute wait. We got there at 9:10 and the hostess said 15 minutes... which turned into an hour and a half.... and they all acted like this is normal for your business and were completely unapologetic. Today was my third time at Ruby Sunshine. I went for my birthday last year and had a bad experience (food quality, not service). I wasn't going to return but a friend wanted to go this morning so I gave it another chance. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with an over medium egg and chicken sausage. It was one of the worst meals I've ever had. Our waitress was kind and attentive, but the kitchen staff either hadn't been adequately trained to prepare the food or didn't put even the slightest bit of effort into its preparation. My egg was barely cooked, the entire sandwich was cold, and the cheese wasn't melted. Additionally, the fruit I ordered as a side appeared as if it had sat out on the counter and dried out. I sent my plate back but tipped the waitress bc she did the best she could. I will not be returning and I will be advising everyone I know to eat elsewhere. Side note- I'm also including photos of my friends' food. One ordered the French toast with chicken (an item on the specialty section of the menu), no syrup was provided and the toast was stale. If I click my heels three times, can I come back here? My reference is because this is from the same folks of Ruby Slipper in NOLA. Naming rights, movie quabble... blah blah blah. While the restaurant has a totally different feel than the original in mid-city New Orleans, the food is about as close as you can get. As I sadly have to say in so many reviews, I do give a lot of grace on places with covid still going on. And the wait-time (use Yelp Waitlist here!) was poorly estimated along with our service. But you could tell they were short staffed. But that is the only thing I could come close to complaining about. My daughter - who is a twin - and I went on a brunch date alone to alleviate two 3 years olds being stuck at home A LOT over the past months. She got the kids pancake, that was HUGE! She loved it and said "they have the goodest food ever!". I got the benedict combo with the Chicken St. Charles and the Eggs Cochon. I do love some good debris, but the chicken was my favorite. I also liked the spinach underneath to catch the overflowing egg. Stupendous meal all around. Heaters on the patio, workers in masks and a covered outside area. 5 stars for sure. read more

Wanted to grab some brunch while visiting Birmingham and this place did not disappoint. On the drive over, I joined the waitlist online which estimated a 20-30 minute wait at 9:30 am on a Sunday. When we arrived, we were told outside patio seating had a 20 minute wait but since we didn't mind sitting inside, we were seated right away. Staff were wearing masks and had the tables spaced out. Having looked at the menu ahead of time, I knew there'd be something I'd enjoy. I knew I wanted to try the seasonal beignets, pumpkin praline, and possibly a Bennie. We started with the pumpkin praline beignets which were delicious. The beignets were good but not the best I've had. They are more doughy than I prefer. The pumpkin praline part was so good though. I am such a huge fan. I had the Egg Cochon Bennie and it was very good. It was a little bit cold by the time I got it but it didn't take away from the flavors. The biscuit was tasty although a tad too salty for me. The pork was delicious and moist. The hollandaise sauce was also a bit too salty for me but still good. I liked that it was served on a bed of spinach (made me feel healthier ;)). My friend got the Chicken St. Charles Bennie which he enjoyed and finished. It looked very good and delicious. I usually love to eat breakfast here but today I was served my coffee & just a little later my meal. Kins R, my waitress asked if I needed anything else and I asked her to refill my coffee. She took my cup and went back to the kitchen. About a few minutes later, without my coffee refill I turned back to the kitchen and she was standing in some kind of meeting. In about 5-10 minutes, she finally returns to the bar with my coffee. I had no drink to go with my breakfast. Usually they have coffee available on the bar. This is the worst service I ever had here and I use to come in a least once a week. I only tipped her 10% because I received no explanation or apology for not returning with my drink. I usually tip 30% or above here as they have great bartenders but today was very disappointing. read more

Clear problem in kitchen They made me a new plate but my wife had already finished hers by the time mine came. Food was good but not outstanding. We may not have ordered well as some diners meals around us looked great Space is ample and noise level OK. They comped mine at least and apologized profusely. Finally got a chance to check this place out. The check in experience was great and faster than was told. The staff was friendly and upbeat. I got an omelette with grits and a biscuit. The food was good, the biscuits were heavy and doughy, not my favorite but overall the food was decent. Only complaint I have was my waitress was very scarce and when she finally got me a refill, she took my cup and went to another table to get them checked out, set my cup on their table and walked to another table before going back to get it.
