I have Ruby's Cafe in my larger "fast breakfast" repertoire and I don't go quite as often as I would like, but when I do I'm always pleased! Friendly and efficient place! But more importantly, it's delicious. I'm a bit of a creature of habit and often just grab the same bagel with egg and cheese (which they do very well), but today I changed it up and got the breakfast burrito. WOW, it was sooooo good! Nice and dense without being really heavy, the chorizo and black beans fuse together so well, and the way the outside is toasted is just the right amount of crispy. Everything inside works so well together (nice slices of avocado at no extra charge too), but the salsa they included on the side really helps tie it together. There are bites you'll need the salsa when the beans and chorizo are extra dense, but it was so good I was compelled to say so on yelp. I have a new breakfast craving! Thanks RC! read more

I love this place. They're just a short drive from my work. I recently just started going there and getting their oven roasted turkey sandwich on wheat which is JAM packed with turkey and so delicious every time! I also get their ginger cookie...it is to die for. The owner is always so sweet and personable. The people that answer the phone to take orders are also so kind and sweet. Came to Ruby's Cafe for lunch with my coworkers. We called ahead to place our orders for pick up and by the time we arrived, the food was ready to go! I got their Oven Roasted Turkey Sandwich (aioli, garden greens, and sun-dried cranberries on a baguette), and it was fulfilling and tasty! I enjoyed the use of their ingredients; however, their baguette was more on the stale and hard side for me. Customer service was quick and very friendly, and overall I enjoyed my experience at Ruby's Cafe. Ruby's Cafe has great lunch items! My go-to is usually the half salad/ half sandwich. I love this place because it isn't overwhelmingly busy, it is always quiet and I find it to be a nice place to relax, catch my breath from the day or week, and I can also catch up on writing, work and coffee all during this time. You can taste the quality and freshness in all of their items, the baked goods are also a treat. My one qualm is the closing time! You have to get here by 3 if you want a proper lunch! read more

I've worked in the area for a little over a year now and I've never stopped by before. I'm a bit of a creature of habit and due to the pandemic places I'd established as favorites early on are closed in the area. If you walk by it looks like a nice place, but also easy to miss. The colors of the sign blend in with the area, so I guess it didn't stand out much for me. Whatever the case I decided to drop in the other day with a co worker and OMG! I can't believe I've never tried it before. For starts the everything bagel was EVERYTHING! The eggs were made just right, and the turkey was nice and hot with the cheese melted atop just right. Honestly, I wouldn't have visited Ruby's had I... (a) Not taken a wrong turn onto Hollis on my way to the Emery Bay Public Market. (b) Not noticed the large Art Deco building in which the cafe is housed. But the bigger question is that if Rudy Can't Fail, can Ruby? It's a deep, provocative question that has bothered me ever since I thought they were both called Ruby's. Now I've been to Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe down the street before for a Mexican-style breakfast, but Ruby's has never been on my radar. Why would it? It's one of those mommy magnet places where those huge rubber baby bugger bumpers get in my way toward the utensils. God forbid one of those hausfrau harridans could lift a finger to move their prams. Thanks mommies. Anyway, it's a place to get a fruit plate, a sandwich, a donut, a cup of joe...the standard items in a lunchtime cafe. I went for the $6.95 Half Seasoned Roast Beef Sandwich on a French Roll (see photo). I'm not sure what it was seasoned with and why I got only half of it, but it was a decent enough sammie if a bit oversaturated with mayo. I imagine the extra mayo is a Caucasian preference since that's the only people that seem to come here. I tried a $3.95 cup of the Chicken Noodle Soup (see photo). It was definitely from a can. The noodles were way too identical and wilty-wet to be homemade. If I worked at Pixar or Peet's headquarters, maybe I'd come here if I was tired of the company cafeteria. Maybe. But I don't think I have the athleticism of jumping over another infant carriage. I guess Ruby can fail. But that's OK...she never said she was perfect. I visited Ruby's over my birthday weekend and got the Chicken En Fuego again. To no surprise, it was just as good as I remembered (slightly spicier). The owner was still working right along with the rest of the staff, which I take note of and appreciate because it shows his dedication and a level of consistent quality. We were so set on Seoul on Wheels today, but alas they broke the Tues/Thurs routine and stayed in SF when they should be here. =( Okay, let's settle for Ruby's then. In the past, I frequented Ruby's on a regular basis for either their soup or Caesar salads. It's close. The food is decent. Boy, are they over-priced for what they are. ($8-9 for a chicken Caesar salad?) Many of my coworkers complained about their soup being watered down. It's been a while since I last had some. The food is not exactly something you would crave. That's exactly the reason why I often walk past, on my way to something better and worthy of my hard-earned bucks. Today, I had the "Philly Cheesesteak." It was more of some sort of roast beef and caramelized onions with melted cheddar cheese on toasted bread ($8). The sandwich appeared simple, but the flavors weren't bad. My coworker had the caprese sandwich ($6.50). The sandwich was in a roll that was a bit spongy and could have used a crustier bread, perhaps toasted, to save it from it's chewy texture. read more

The city of Emeryville is speckled with little cafe's and restaurants like Ruby's. It's cozy, convenient, and not fussy. The menu is simple and the customer service is friendly but not 'in yo face' uncomfortable. To start, I had the hot chocolate. For someone who likes sugar (and a lot of it), it's a bold statement to say this drink was overbearingly sweet... I couldn't finish it! Comparable to the Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha at Starbucks... (you should've heard me answering the phone at work...) My boyfriend had a Bagel with cream cheese, lox, capers, and onions on a bed of lettuce ($6?). I don't know why it reminded me of The Little Mermaid... but it was pretty! I had the Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich ($6?) and a side of Minestrone soup ($3.50/cup?). By request, it came out warm and toasted, which made for an attractive tablescape of crumbs and drips of flavored mayonnaise. The sandwich was so deliciously savory and juicy that I couldn't resist eating it like a slob. The Minestrone soup was chunky and very soothing. Just what I needed on a muggy Saturday morning. I want to give it more stars but I have yet to dine at all the other cafe's in the area. What do I say about Ruby's cafe? Well... it was the first coffee shop I stumbled on my first day of living in Emeryville. I'm sure glad I found something but the something I found wasn't impressive at all... it was underwhelming. I ordered a breakfast sandwich that set me back about $6 because I asked for GF bread and it wasn't even good. There was hardly any egg on it and it was as dry as dry can be and in order to suck it down I needed to chug my bitter tasting latte and all for $9.. meh. Overall the prices of the drinks are fair but the food [if] modified is a little steep for my taste.The service is okay nothing that sets this place apart and the joint itself seems a little isolated and languid. This joint simply has no life and if the food doesn't bring me back then not sure what will. Ruby's kept me sane during the pandemic. I went there every day for my latte and lunch and to see some friendly faces. I couldn't hang out but I always knew they were there. It was comforting to have Ruby's as my "Cheers" cafe (where everybody knew my name). I've been going to Ruby's since 2007 and I wouldn't keep going if I didn't like it. Was on my way to Starbucks to study, but walked by this place and looked like a very nice place for studying. I decided to go here instead and it was a great place to hit the books. I ordered a latte. It was pretty good. Nothing out of the ordinary, but I'm not a coffee connoisseur. What I like is that this place has a nice atmosphere and the owner is super nice! He's always smiling and greeting his customers. The place consistently has customers coming in. Large tables and small tables if you are here alone. Very spacious, tall ceilings. The only con I would say is that it gets a bit smokey/stuffy at times from all the foods being cooked, but that's only a problem if you plan on staying there for long periods of time. They offer a list full of coffee options and teas. As well as lunch/breakfast items and pastries/desserts. You can get free coffee refills on dripped coffees I believe. They also have stamp cards for frequent coffee buyers, just ask if they don't offer you one! Overall, this place is a great place to grab lunch or catch up with friends over coffee. read more

Ruby's is located in a very ideal spot to catch all the local workers along Hollis during lunchtime. Sandwiches are always on point, salads are just as good (love that you can get extra bacon on your Caesar!), and by George the selection of cookies is FABULOUS! I recently got an alfajor- supeeeerrrr soft shortbread like cookies (not sure if they actually use a cornstarch base?) sandwiching a generous dollop of smooth dulce de leche... Delicious! Service here is as fast as the lunch crowd will allow, and the talkative folks behind the counter are always super sweet- they always make sure to give regulars an extra warm welcome back. Ruby's does close early, so don't try to drop by for dinner...but for breakfast/lunch, they're always a solid choice. =] read more

I could find very little fault with my excellent soup and salad lunch. The butternut squash curry soup was rich and layered with warm, complex flavors. Texture and consistency were spot on. Perhaps some larger pieces of squash would enhance the soup. The garden salad was delicious with their homemade honey dressing. There could have been more walnuts, or perhaps a cheese. The bread only would have been better if it were served warm and with butter. Overall Ruby's offsets an impressive lunch for under $10. read more

Overall, was not fond of the panini style pressed sandwich. He felt like the bagel needs some spread to make it less dry. The mocha was pretty good. This review is purely for their sandwiches --- the chicken avocado sandwich has the tiniest sliver of chicken in between 2 fat slices of bread. A good sandwich has the right proportion of bread to filling, this one is skewed on the bread heavy side, leaving one feeling quite bloated. It definitely didn't used to be like this but is consistent as of lately, and I have been coming here for 6 years, since I work down the street.
