Yelping for lunch in Missoula and am driving near the University. From the outside, Ruby's looks like one of those divey places that can be either fantastic for food or......heaven forbid mediocre. Reviews on yelp were all over the board but positive, so I am hungry and my growling belly says.......Go for it! I walk inside and discover a clean, friendly and busy buzzing environment! Almost all of the booths were full so I opted for a seat at the counter in front of the pass through window from the grill. A friendly busboy asked me to pick up my phone as he wiped off the counter area in front of me and inquired if I needed coffee or a soft drink. I ordered my normal diet coke and he went of to get a tall glass of icy refreshment. My front and center counter seat allowed me to see and hear the internal operations of a great little place! Everyone was working their butts off to get the food out in order to feed the masses of hungry lunch hour customers. I heard of order mistakes, burnt toast, forgotten or lost take out orders and missing soup. Yes, as close to chaos as it can get, this place was slammed for lunch and the staff knew their job and everyone was stepping up. My waitress asked for my order and I went for the Friday special, a meaty, thick with potatoes and flavorful clam chowder plus a fish hoagie which was also tasty and extremely hot! The deep fried fish filet was served on a fresh yet chewy french bun, topped with tomatoes, lettuce and mayo. A large portioned plate that immediately silenced that growl in my gut. I am impressed with the hard working staff with great attitudes and I do look forward to a return visit here on my next trip to town as they serve good fresh and tasty food with honest friendly service. Nice folks here but this place came highly recommended and failed to deliver the quality that we were lead to expect. Like any old roadside diner, Ruby's has got history etched into the walls. This is the feeding trough for the local retired and blue collar community. Typical American diner fare and if you're hungry enough, it may suffice however we travel all over the country and I'm disappointed to say that the food anywhere in Montana has been the worst we've had anywhere. So far we've tried three different places in MT and have not been impressed with any of them and one is a huge tourist attraction! Ruby's has that feel ya know? That weathered the storm and still here kind of feel. That everyone in here knows each other and you're the funny looking stranger feel. The coffee was hot but our food was seriously lacking in not only flavor but also quality ingredients. My omelet had american slices melted over the top and our side of mushrooms came cold dumped right from the can into a ramekin. I'm pretty sure that I already wrote this review but yelp requested that I review it and my last one is gone. Seems like the ownership or at least the management is taking down reviews to save face? How about increase the quality of the food? Shady practices make me even more unwilling to give places a second chance. Maybe I'm just some foodie snob from the PNW but bad is bad no matter where you go. If anyone wants to recommend some good eats in or near Missoula, please shoot me a message. I have been a patron of Ruby's since Gene Myers was owner. In fact I remember having breakfast here following Little Grizzly Football Games (when little Griz was still actual Football). Point is, I've been coming here since I can remember and I was born in Missoula in 1973. Not only has there been an over downturn in food quality and pricing but there is a 3.50 convenience fee charged when using a debit or credit card to pay!!! Sorry!!!! High prices and a convenience fee isn't worth small portions and marginal food! So who pays???? Even though my server did a marginal job, because they are understaffed, he received a cut in tip to make up for the 3.50% convenience fee!!! It is clear the current owner of Ruby's Cafe care little about their product or reputation and are more concerned about money and bottom line!! Well, this loyal 50 year old customer just finished his last meal! This establishment will never see another dime from me! So you can only imagine where you can shove your 3.50% convenience fee!!! read more

Food - The cinnamon roll was amazing., it comes hot with amazing buttery cream cheese frosting. My 3kids and I shared one before our food came. We had breakfast and it was all great. 2kids had the Belgian Waffle (my son had a whole one and my daughter did half, from the kids menu and it was totally enough food. My other daughter had the chocolate chip pancakes, she ordered two but they are huge, one would have been enough . I had the farmers skillet and it was amazing, if your a fan of hollandaise sauce I recommend it. Service - our server was very good. Just the right amount of checking in without hovering. I like that he spoke right to the kids asking them what they would like. He was knowledgeable about the menu and he's the one who suggest the 1/2 waffle for one of the kids. The food came out in a timely manner and it was hot. Ambiance - if you watch Yellowstone you know this cafe. It's pretty much what you see in the show. I love the older western decor and the swivel chairs at the counter. You can totally picture John Dutton sitting there. I hope they don't change anything in the dinning area from the wood paneling to the art on the walls. T-Shirts are 28$! Priced a little high for me. Beware the bathroom, the door is wonky and I walked in on a lady cause it didn't shut properly. My daughters struggled with the door too. read more

Had lunch at Ruby's Saturday afternoon with my wife and daughter. Our meal was excellent! We all had cheeseburgers and French Fries. The cheeseburgers were cooked to perfection, seasoned well and juicy but not greasy. French fries were fresh and cooked nice and crispy! Service was efficient and friendly! The plate comes with a pancake and a pad of whipped vegetable oil flavored like butter. Our waitress, Anastasia, was cheerful and attentive. my mother in law bought me an my husband lunch the other day an inside my husbands sandwich it was a pork chop sandwich there was black hair in the breading of the sandwich it was gross it was like a think patch of hair ! Then the other day like a few days ago we got something there before it closed thinking maybe it might be better but no there was black hairs in the utensils that they gave us so I don't think imma be going back there for A while!!! read more

Our party of four stopped in for breakfast on a Friday morning. The service was fast and friendly, and the coffee was good. The pancakes, oh the pancakes. Steer clear of the pancakes. They were tall and looked great, but were so tough they couldn't be cut with a fork, and barely with a knife. Soaking them in syrup didn't help either. Great diner style breakfast at a terrific price! The staff was attentive and friendly, and the retired guys at the counter who all seemed to know one another gave the place that feeling of a well-loved place. Bacon was thick and well-cooked, super tasty! My only complaint was the pancake - it tasted floury and was tough, as though it had been really over mixed. The eggs were cooked to perfection, and the coffee kept flowing. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. I watched one customer at the counter order biscuits and gravy - it came SWAMPED in gravy and he was so delighted it was entertaining to watch! He loved it so much he ordered EXTRA gravy, and they gave it to him in a soup cup. I know what I'm ordering next time! :-D This may sound weird but made a difference for me: A place this established can easily become complacent, but I noticed that the light fixtures and wall mounts overhead appeared to be well dusted. Nothing is grosser than wondering what chunks of greasy dust might be falling from above into your food, and this place felt very clean in the dining area. Thumbs up! read more

This place is a hit or miss. Sometimes things are great and sometimes like today they were so so. The biscuit for the biscuit and gravy was really tough. Not flakey at all. The cinnamon roll had great flavor, not overly sweet, but super tough. Food came out in decent time. We were given our check and I waited over 15minutes before I got up to pay. We waited patiently, stacked everything, and chatted with another table. I get they get busy but when you pass by your table it's a real quick grab and go kind of thing. The staff is super friendly and nice. We still come back as it's a pretty toddler friendly place and not every time we go is everything dried out. read more

I found this place driving around in historic downtown Missoula. Let's just start with EVERYTHING IS PHENOMENAL. Eggs cooked correctly, hash browns perfect. The simple things that we should expect that have disappeared in this business. Out of tower who always looks for these little popular local spots to eat. I chose a bad day as it was a game day for the local team and the place was packed with people waiting outside, i was able to sit at the counter and waited ten minutes before my waitress, who had passed me by numerous times finally asked another waitress to set me up ( water, coffee & silverware. Another five minutes and more numerous times of being passed by she finally stopped to take my order which took another 15 minutes to come out. Nothing special and quantity was average as well as the meal. I again know I picked a busy day and maybe didn't try whatever the local's are so excited about, but my opinion is it was average food with in my case poor service. read more

Does a standing room-only after-church crowd at a small diner mean that the food must be excellent? Well yes, yes it does. Ruby's serves an awesome meal. I was lucky enough to grab a counter seat and watch locals, tourists and football fans crowd into this humble place (actually much bigger inside than it looks from the street) and enjoy my food while I lingered. My garbage omelette was first rate, big but not too big, with plenty of everything inside. The coffee kept coming, and my waitress was great. This is the best place to eat breakfast in Missoula. It may not be the best food (though it's pretty darn good), but the outstanding service and atmosphere are totally worth it. Basically anything on the breakfast menu is worth ordering, but I especially recommend a simple meal of eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. Just had breakfast there. The food is typical roadside cafe style food. Not particularly good - but not bad either. Just your "Basic Bacon n' Eggs" I actually enjoy eating breakfast at these types of places. Only complaint I have (and its a weird one): they only give you one slice of toast with your breakfast. WTF?? I've probably eaten breakfast out a million times in my life. In about half the states in this country as well as a half dozen other countries. And I have NEVER heard of a place only giving you one slice of toast with breakfast. Never even so much as heard a story from somebody who know a guy who ate at a place that only gives one slice of bread with breakfast. I asked the waitress and she said - "yup...that's what you get - one big piece instead of two" Serious? Ok....so I ordered a side of toast. One slice. The problem is - this wasn't like some big ass "Texas Toast" slice of bread. It was same thickness and maybe just a little bigger than your basic slice of bread. Perhaps 10% bigger. Not even close being the same size as a slice a half. And definitely not equivalent to 2 slices. I would have given them 3 stars if I was just rating the food. But damn - I just can't get over having to pay for that 2nd slice of bread. Makes you wonder what management was thinking when they came up with the idea to cut costs by halving the bread portions. I mean...is bread really that expensive? Ruby's - you may have saved some money on bread today. But it cost you a star. read more

The first time we came here it was during lunch. We both ordered the roast beef, gravy potatoes and veggie. When it came out it was basically a giant plate of shoe leather with a can of corn and some instant mashed potatoes covered in some brown gloopy gravy. It was so bland and disgusting. My husband vowed to never go there again and I agreed, except I always give things a second chance and all the locals told us, that breakfast was the time to go. The next time we went I didnt expect much but they really showed me that I should have expected much much less! We waited nearly 15 minutes to be acknowledged at our table and then when we got our drinks it took them about 15 minutes to do so. The coffee was cold and bitter and my water glass had lipstick marks on it. No one apologized at all for the wait or anything. We finally ordered and half an hour later our order came. My eggs were under cooked, the hashbrowns were soft and greasy and the pancakes werent even cooked through! It was so gross. Then we had to wait up at the counter for another 10 minutes to pay while our waitress was out back having a smoke. One other waitress had to out and get her and she was pissed we ruined her smoke break. She also came back reeking like an ashtray and her hands were dirty. Two words..... PRIME RIB! FRI and SAT. The best priced and tasting prime rib in the valley. If you want food that will stick to your ribs you need to go here. I wanted to love this place. I've driven by it a million times and have been looking for great breakfast in Missoula. I thought it was very overpriced for a diner and for the poor quality of the ingredients. Everything seemed pre-packaged and canned and not prepared with any skill or care. The service was good and the food came out fast but I'd honestly rather wait a little longer and have better food. 30 bucks for breakfast for 2 is way too much when the hash browns are soggy and the gravy and biscuits tastes pre packaged and the mushrooms came from a can. I won't go back. Bummer. read more
