Good burgers, great breakfasts...nothing fancy. A real diner, very laid back and casual. Many long-time regulars, almost a cult following.

This is the best place to eat breakfast in Missoula. It may not be the best food (though it's pretty darn good), but the outstanding service and atmosphere are totally worth it. Basically anything on the breakfast menu is worth ordering, but I especially recommend a simple meal of eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. Just had breakfast there. The food is typical roadside cafe style food. Not particularly good - but not bad either. Just your "Basic Bacon n' Eggs" I actually enjoy eating breakfast at these types of places. Only complaint I have (and its a weird one): they only give you one slice of toast with your breakfast. WTF?? I've probably eaten breakfast out a million times in my life. In about half the states in this country as well as a half dozen other countries. And I have NEVER heard of a place only giving you one slice of toast with breakfast. Never even so much as heard a story from somebody who know a guy who ate at a place that only gives one slice of bread with breakfast. I asked the waitress and she said - "yup...that's what you get - one big piece instead of two" Serious? Ok....so I ordered a side of toast. One slice. The problem is - this wasn't like some big ass "Texas Toast" slice of bread. It was same thickness and maybe just a little bigger than your basic slice of bread. Perhaps 10% bigger. Not even close being the same size as a slice a half. And definitely not equivalent to 2 slices. I would have given them 3 stars if I was just rating the food. But damn - I just can't get over having to pay for that 2nd slice of bread. Makes you wonder what management was thinking when they came up with the idea to cut costs by halving the bread portions. I mean...is bread really that expensive? Ruby's - you may have saved some money on bread today. But it cost you a star. read more

The first time we came here it was during lunch. We both ordered the roast beef, gravy potatoes and veggie. When it came out it was basically a giant plate of shoe leather with a can of corn and some instant mashed potatoes covered in some brown gloopy gravy. It was so bland and disgusting. My husband vowed to never go there again and I agreed, except I always give things a second chance and all the locals told us, that breakfast was the time to go. The next time we went I didnt expect much but they really showed me that I should have expected much much less! We waited nearly 15 minutes to be acknowledged at our table and then when we got our drinks it took them about 15 minutes to do so. The coffee was cold and bitter and my water glass had lipstick marks on it. No one apologized at all for the wait or anything. We finally ordered and half an hour later our order came. My eggs were under cooked, the hashbrowns were soft and greasy and the pancakes werent even cooked through! It was so gross. Then we had to wait up at the counter for another 10 minutes to pay while our waitress was out back having a smoke. One other waitress had to out and get her and she was pissed we ruined her smoke break. She also came back reeking like an ashtray and her hands were dirty. Two words..... PRIME RIB! FRI and SAT. The best priced and tasting prime rib in the valley. If you want food that will stick to your ribs you need to go here. Hard to believe but we had not been to Ruby's Cafe for about 5 years. The last time we went they had mashed potatoes out of a bag! That is pretty much sacrilege to a gal who grew up in Idaho. So we have been punishing them (darn it, they didn't even notice) and took our $9.99 elsewhere. However, we decided to try them for breakfast since my husband loves biscuits and gravy. The food was fairly priced but not out of this world good. I ordered vegi-browns and they didn't even put cheese on top, nor add vegetables except peppers and onions. However, everyone else must have better taste buds, because we had to stand in line. At least until we caught on that it is "seat yourself." The best part of the experience was seeing lots of friends there and joining a couple from church in sharing a booth. Will we got back? Probably. That many locals can't be wrong. I wanted to love this place. I've driven by it a million times and have been looking for great breakfast in Missoula. I thought it was very overpriced for a diner and for the poor quality of the ingredients. Everything seemed pre-packaged and canned and not prepared with any skill or care. The service was good and the food came out fast but I'd honestly rather wait a little longer and have better food. 30 bucks for breakfast for 2 is way too much when the hash browns are soggy and the gravy and biscuits tastes pre packaged and the mushrooms came from a can. So we flew in from Hawaii and drove into Montana, seeking old fashioned cafe style food! We are somewhat chicken fried steak specialist, these were beyond expectations! We had the dinner I had white gravy and mashed potatoes( not lumpy or slimy) and my husband had brown gravy and fries. The hand breaded chicken fry is crispy and cooked to perfection fork tender but who wants to lose the breading! Two stars because the service was great. The waitress was very nice, but the food was not good at all. A breakfast place with terrible eggs makes no sense to me. I paid almost $17 to eat some cottage cheese and bacon. Big disappointment. I think they use powdered eggs or something. We also found hair in the hash browns. read more

I live in another town and drove past Ruby's a couple of times saying, it's so cute and such a vintage diner looking. We need to stop there. We did awhile back and I instantly loved it. I had pancakes and they were so good. The staff was super friendly and Ruby's has a such a homey feel to it. This morning I wanted to try their cinnamon rolls. A friend who was born and raised in Missoula said they are a must try! Oh my! The cinnamon rolls are delicious. Some times with cinnamon rolls frosting all you can taste is sugar. Not with Ruby's cinnamon rolls, the cream cheese flavor really comes through. I could eat a bowl of their cream cheese frosting. It's wonderful! I brought the cinnamon rolls . home to my family as a surprise and they loved them! Oh, I will be back both to dine in and the next cinnamon roll craving I get...I will be heading in to Ruby's. They served my food to another table. The people did not have masks on, then the waitress picked up the food and brought it to me. She sent it down and when I looked at her like she was crazy, she asked if I wanted it remade. With Covid being a real thing yes I want it remade...was that even a real question? I asked for it to go after it was "remade" it went back and came right back to me. With not enough time to remake the meal. Pies, soups, and cookies oh my! All are baked fresh in the back. So tasty. Breakfast is always good. My favorite is the "garbage" omelette, has all the goodies in it. So much food I always take home some. read more

Veterans get a discount at Rubys. The servers are friendly and attentive. Good luck getting to the bottom of your cup of coffee. The counter is full of old timers and friends.
