Woah. Woah! WOAH! Delicious yo! Kansas City Missouri, 1992. It's the dog days of summer. I'm 12 years old, school is just around the corner, and I was DREADING it. Sure, I had been used to summers ending, after all, I was in the 4th grade and had plenty of summers under my belt. This summer however, felt different. I was moving. Moving across the country away from my home, my family, and my community. I was nine at the time and my mom had to move for work. I remember sitting out in the hot August heat, near our above ground pool, and pondering what life would be life. I was scared to move, scared to have to pick up and restart everything, the friends, the community. Would I ever find this again? One particular night as the move got close, I was sitting out back, tearing up and taking in the situation. It was hard to comprehend, being ten at the time. My grandfather saw me outside and came out with my very favorite. My face lit up like a Christmas tree. My grandfather had brought me a bowl of his famous chili, a recipe that had been in our family for 3 generations. What's happening to casual dining? It's not the food, Ruby's remains top tier as a burger and fries spot. And, Ruby's has an atmosphere that takes us back to the 60s...the service, well, it's what you expect with casual dining. Then the bill comes for two at ~$50...really?...For basic burger/fries or eggs/bacon? The two of us can get a meal every bit as good at In-n-out or Chipotle for ~$20. Well, first off my food was amazing but that's not what was the best part for some reason there was something going on with the computer system and they didn't show my order was paid for they showed it was canceled and I told them I don't wanna pay for it twice they literally let me walk away with my food and I told them if it isn't charged I'll come back and pay for it. We were here very early in the morning, right after they opened, so there were hardly any other customers. We were in and out relatively quickly. I went there for lunch. I was seated right away. I had the Turkey sandwich with French fries and a chocolate milkshake. The sandwich was a decent size and was cut in half. I loved that it had cranberry sauce on it. The waiter came to take my order right away. I didn't have to wait long for my food or to receive the check. The waiter was nice and efficient. Without modification I did not see anything for vegans; there are a limited number of vegetarian options (a salad, impossible burger, omelettes, and other breakfast items. That said, I like diners that don't have a corporate feel. With their 50's decor that has not changed for as long as I've been eating there, it certainly qualifies. I always order the same thing, Butcher Block Omelette with potatoes which are cooked with onions and peppers. While I would prefer the potatoes served crispier I never leave disappointed. Service is always good and prices are reasonable, surprising for the location. Sit outside and enjoy an unobstructed ocean or beach view. Most of our visits dolphins are swimming by, always there are seagulls and people fishing at the end of the pier. After the meal walk a short distance and take the short ferry to Balboa Island, gawk at the yachts in the marina, and window shop on the main street. Alone, the location of this diner makes it worth visiting. read more

Stopped in for breakfast because I thought I remembered it being decent. Couldn't be more wrong. Worst breakfast ever. Food came in less than 3 min. I ordered eggs over easy... they came very very over easy... in fact basically raw. Potatoes were cold and so greasy. The hi light of bad was the gravy and biscuit's... look like watery chunks of some white debris poured over the biscuits. I tried to eat a few bites but was just the worst food ever. This a great spot for the family. Parking is a across the street so just make sure that you keep an eye on traffic. We were seated promptly. The kids needed to use the restaurant right away and found the wall phone. Their minds were blown as I explained it as an older version of the iPhone in my hand. Service brought buildable paper cars. Big hit! Food came quickly and we enjoyed it all. Kids meals are a good portion. We like to get the super burger on sourdough and share. My husband loves cherry coke and I love the Vanilla Coke. I also asked for fries, but got breakfast potatoes instead. The bread was slightly burnt. The breakfast potatoes were slightly soggy. The breakfast sandwich was slightly doomed. It wasn't good. I love rubys!!!!! If you ask them to make you a cherry shake they will it's Not on the menu but it's unreal and the only shake I like!! Food was delicious and service was super friendly and fast!! Ruby's will always be a nostalgic place to eat, especially the locations that are still by the beach like this one! You usually can't go wrong with burgers fries and shakes! We tried something new and got the parmesan sourdough burger, it was delicious! We added a caesar salad to the side for a small extra charge and it was enough to share for a little bite. I always come here for shakes and fries so will definitely be back for this. The server was friendly and helpful when we needed extra things on the side. First off the staff here are wonderful. So friendly and helpful! The place itself is kind of dingey with a smell I couldn't quite place. But that adds to the charm? Maybe. I knew I had to stop here but I wasn't exactly starving so I just had an appetizer and a milkshake. The shake was fantastic and the appetizer pretty good.
