Amazing first time experience with Ruen Thai earlier this week. They are still closed for dine in but you can walk in and order "to go" and use their outdoor tables. The girl who helped us with the menu when we arrived was sweet. We placed our order and waited outside 10-15 mins and she brought it out to us. The Thai Tea and veggie Pad Thai (medium spice level) was on point! Couldn't have possibly asked for a better meal. My partner also loved his beef pad kee mow and we enjoyed the potsticker appetizer together. I think we found our new regular Thai food spot! read more

When I see an Asian restaurant in a small town, I usually find that it's hit or miss. It's also hard to find a good Thai restaurant because for me, Thai food in America isn't as delicious as Thai food in Thailand. With that being said, I've been to Ruen Thai a few times on various occasions when I was in the area and with this recent visit, I can say that Ruen Thai is a little gem in Cornelia. The parking lot is small so it can fill up quickly when it gets busy. When we walked inside, the big tables were busy but majority of the booths lining the wall were taken by families and couples. We were seated in a lonely corner booth but our server never forgot us. The lunch menu is small and simple so I ordered the duck curry and my husband ordered the beef stir fry dish (not sure of the exact dish name). They have two soups that they offer with their lunch menu: coconut and vegetable. I loved the coconut soup; it's reminiscent of tom yum soup. It's sour and flavorful and I absolutely loved it. If that's not for you, the vegetable soup is the one to choose. The flavor is light and the broth is clear. The duck curry came out in a pretty bowl with a lid and its own ladle as well as a bowl of rice. The curry was a little too liquidy in my opinion but it was good; the pineapple added a hint of sweetness to the dish. The duck meat retained it's duck taste, compared to when you're eating curry with chicken, but it went well with the curry. My husband enjoyed his beef dish but I thought it was just ok. Once we were done eating, we went up to the counter to pay and we made sure to grab some candies before we left. There is also a small Asian store next to Ruen Thai so if you're interested, stop by and check out some Asian goodies (i.e. Asian drinks, Asian candy, canned goods, etc). TLDR: Ruen Thai is pretty good. It's not something that I would drive 1 hour for but whenever you're in the area, give it a try. read more

We were just passing through on our way to Atlanta and boy were we wowed!!!! I got the lunch pad thai but with wide noodles and it was hands down the best I've ever had. The sauce was amazing and there was plenty of it. My husband got the sweet and sour stir fry and said it was OK but not as stellar. He much preferred mine. Our vegetarian friend got Pad Pakistan and said she the was great and will update definitely get it again. His only complaint was tofu wasn't listed but I'm sure they would have done it for him had he asked. Service was spectacular! We were in and out in about 30 minutes. Everything frame out piping hot. Coming from Asia, I might have a higher standard for Asian food. That being said, I think this place deserves a one star. It is honestly the worst food I have ever had. I ordered the ginger fish and it is the most salty dish I have had in any restaurant. The only reason I ate it is because the service was so slow that made me starving. My wife and I have tried a lot of thai food from different restaurants and oddly enoughly, we continue to come back to this one. Personally, I think the two highlight dishes are the pad thai and pho. The pad thai meat has almost a smoky grilled taste to it, which is awesome. I think it is because they chargrill the meat before it is served, which I've never seen in other pad thai dishes. Personally, I think the pho is way better than most pho joints in the Atlanta and Buford area. It's a little heavier in terms of flavor and I have never been disappointed ordering it. Worst thing about the dishes is that you can tell that they skimp out on the meat. Majority of the meat for the dishes are shaved and cut into very thin slices so you lose that meaty bite and texture. I've never seen a thai restaurant do this before BUT the food is still good considering the meat hoarding. As a heavy meat eater, I can overlook this given how delicious the dishes still are. So you're wondering, why the 3 star if the food is so good? The service, while for the most part is nice and friendly, can be VERY slow. We've eaten here over a dozen times and on busy nights, I've never seen more than 3 waiters/waitresses. They also double up as the hosts, taking phone orders, and ringing up the receipts. See the problem here? Many times throughout a night, water is forgotten to be refilled or you feel like you have to awkwardly make a fire to get someone's attention with the smoke signal. We have also had negative experiences with their younger waiters. Our last experience dining there, my father in law paid for meal and did not leave a tip on the receipt because we had cash on hand and were going to leave that on the table. Service that night was okay, nothing horrible or memorable. When I went to the front to ask for another bag for our to go boxes, the young waiter seemed agitated and grabbed a bag responding, "You know we don't include gratuity on the checks, right?" I was shocked that he would say that, assuming that we didn't know to leave him a tip. My father in law has broken English and I don't want to assume the worst, but I think the waiter was thinking that he was some foreigner who knew nothing about the concept of 'tipping' your servers. We responded back very friendly, saying that we left the tip on the table. The paying customer should never be in a situation where they have to exhibit more grace and self control than the business itself. My wife and I love supporting local businesses and restaurants like this, especially when you believe their product/food/service can contend with bigger and better-known businesses, but c'mon... it's things like this that push your customers out the door. In short, the food is great but don't go in expecting to receieve even an average service, because honestly, you will leave disappointed. read more
