We've used this place a few times and it's always been okay, but never again. I picked my dog up after an 8 day stay and they said she was a "little messy", meaning she had peed on herself. I asked when that happened and the girl said "multiple nights in a row". I told her I wish they would've called and asked if we wanted to pay for a bath so she wasn't just covered in her own urine for days on end and the girl (Dana) was so, so rude and unapologetic- she said "what do you want us to do, call every owner when their dog is messy?". Based on other reviews (and what she told me) they leave the dogs overnight without a way to go to the bathroom from 6pm til whenever the morning person gets there... that seems way too long for most dogs, in my opinion. I can't believe they just leave the dogs covered in their own pee til they are picked up. I felt so guilty when I got our dog. All around just no. These girls need some customer service training too. UPDATE- we gave her a bath and she still smells awful, she's absolutely soaked in urine. I cannot believe they just left her like this. If the owner is looking for my reservation it's under my husbands last name, not mine. read more

We found Ruffners 13 years ago and the first time we boarded our dog we were hooked. When our Daisy was getting up in years they took extra care not to overwhelm her. They take such good care of all the pets. From just daycare to boarding. We now have a new puppy and she too loves going she can not get out of the car fast enough. I love that they put her with a variety of sizes to fully socialize her. During these tough times it's not easy to get her out with other dogs. I recently brought my 6 year-old Australian Shepherd here to be groomed and the service turned out wonderfully. They didn't quote me on how much it was going to cost when I dropped her off, which made me a little uncomfortable. I was very surprised that us was only $55, which is less than I would usually pay, and will definitely make me revisit Ruffner's again for grooming. The service took less than 2 hours, which is also less time than other grooming studios I've visited. Overall, the site was clean, but basic. Not really all that "luxurious", but I don't care too much for the bells and whistles anyways. The staff was friendly. I highly recommend Ruffner's for grooming. read more

Unless they have changed ownership or brought in more mature staff over the past 4 years, I would not take my dog here. We brought our collie here when we first moved into the area 4 years ago. Because of his long thick coat we told them during the summer he could not be out in the heat for long periods of time and that he needed to stay in the indoor play area where there was AC for fear of his health. One day we brought him in the middle of summer on one of the hottest days of that summer. We were honestly scared to leave him but didn't have a choice as we had to be gone all day long and didn't have anyone to let him out to potty. We asked that they please let the entire staff know and make a note that the weather was way too hot for him and he could not be outside unless he had to potty, that he needed to stay in the AC where he could stay cool. They said they would do that. I come to pick him up at the end of the day and he was panting like crazy and his fur was extremely warm to the touch. He was crying and jumping on me which was not normal for him. I made a comment that his fur was incredibly warm (which it gets if he's been outside for too long) and they assured me he was fine. We took him home and he was acting strange the entire day. I couldn't get him to calm down. Later that night he ended up having a seizure. We rushed him to the emergency vet hospital and they said it was due to overexposure of heat! I was in tears! I called the daycare the very next day, left a message explaining what happened.. Never once did I recieve a single phone call back. Not an "I'm so sorry that happened", or "is he okay" or "we will speak to the staff that was here to verify if he was left outside". Not a peep! I was heart broken. I called back and left another message saying they will no longer have our business as we do not trust the safety of our pet. He goes to a different daycare now and has been going there for years.They do not let him out on the really hot days of the year to play in the yard, they keep him in the indoor play areas where there is AC and only let him out for potty time. . They watch him and take great care of him. I have never picked him up from there and had his fur warm or had him painting out of breath and he has never had a seizure since that day here. Personally I think the reason for this was the very young and untrained staffed that was there at the time. I have no clue how the function now and maybe this is a wonderful place now. But I have always felt extremely hurt by what transpired 4 summers ago. read more

I've been taking my 9 month old boxer, Harley here for daycare and boarding. Unfortunately I have had many unsatisfactory experiences. This last time at boarding I get a call that Harley needs to go to the vet. They take her. Turns out the vet said she got bit on her neck and had an Abcess from the bite that needed to be drained. Ruffners denied her getting bit and said it was from allergies and won't do anything about it. They seem to be nice but the minute something happens no one knows anything and no one wants to help. Now my poor puppy is on pain meds and antibiotics because of their carelessness and because of them not paying attention to the dogs playing. I will NEVER return here and I would highly recommend that you DO NOT bring your dogs here. read more

I have been bringing my dogs to Ruffners for over 15 years! When my golden Sunny was entering her later years and had to be boarded for important life issues, they would keep her up in the office so someone was always with her and on occasion even took her home overnight. They loved her as if she was their own. They still hang her picture on their wall. The owners Tom & Jen would give you the shirt off their back for any pup to make them feel loved & cared for. They know every dogs name as soon as they walk in and all the nuances about that dog. Hannah and her staff are just incredible, loving , caring and truly connected to all the pups who come there. I had knicknamed Ruffners as "playtime" and I cannot even say that word unless I am planning to take them there. They hear me say it and both Rusty & Lucy head to the door, sit and wait for me to put their leashes on and jump into the van, so excited to be going. You know your dog is treated well when they can't wait to go. Lucy is our rescue from Kentucky and we are sure she was abused and she was afraid at first to go but because of how she has been loved and cared for, she actually now beats Rusty to the door! I can't say enough good things. The reason you board your pets is because you have somewhere else important to be- who wants or has the time to sit and watch your dog via a camera?? Other places will offer web cameras but they don't have a great outdoor space for our dogs to enjoy the sunshine, wade in a pool, sit on a picnic table, romp in the snow- thats what day care is about. We want our pets to be loved and cared for as if we were there and Ruffners does that genuinely and wholeheartedly! read more

I needed to board two dogs for 5 nights and did a lot of calling around and visiting of kennels. Ruffner's had the best attitude and the staff really seemed to enjoy the animals they were working with. They let me look at the facilities (some kennels didn't--for alleged liability reasons) which I thought was a necessity before I put my dogs there for a week. The kennel area was clean and seemed well ventilated. There were two indoor play areas--one for larger dogs, and one for smaller. Prices were comparable to other kennels I scouted, and it was conveniently located just off Randall Rd. What really sold me was the staff. The woman (owner?) I spoke with listened to me and was patient with the dogs who had never been boarded before. She and the young staff worked with the dogs' personalities to give them the least stressful experience. My only complaint is they do not have someone on-site all night. I will be using Ruffner's again for every lengthy vacation. NOTE: Yelp has this as the Geneva location, but I took my animals to the St. Charles location off North Randall Rd. read more

We tried out four different places in the area and Ruffner's won out. The best test is when our dog is dragging us INTO a daycare and she does that at Ruffner's. I like the fact that you can buy packages here and you can use the package during the year as you please. You are not forced into using a certain allotment every week. I also like that we don't have to have a reservation for daycare. They take walkins, but that will probably end as more people use them. The only thing I question is how clean the place is. There's a bit of a smell when you walk in and the front counter area doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling as it's not like our other daycare in North Carolina that had a front area more like a vet's office. I did tour the back and that looked pretty good so maybe it's just me. read more

Took my dogs here while we were on vacation. The place is nice and clean. I was concerned about day care since my dogs are not very social with other dogs; they did put them into day care and I would have liked more specific feedback about their behavior. This is the only complaint I have, at check out no one really knew how they did - they did charge me so who knows? My suggestion would be to keep hours until 7 PM. I wonder how people who work can make it back by 6? I would use it more if the hours were later. I have also used Ruffner's grooming and can clearly say - they do a GREAT job with grooming. They're a friendly crew and are very understanding especially if you have a young rambunctious pup like we do, they were friendly enough to recommend a good dog trainer for him as well! Understand that when you bring your full of energy puppy or dog they will return completely tired but happy. The only reason why I gave them 3 stars is because my puppy came home with a small puncture wound to his ear, so I wasn't too happy about that. They did clean the wound out and he did not seem any worse for wear. Just a small note the dog which gave my puppy the wound was subsequently kicked out as they have a 3 strike rule for misbehavior. Also the ratio of dog monitors to dogs is about 1 worker per 15 when we checked them out. read more

We regularly use Ruffners to allow us to go out of town. Two larger dogs fit comfortably into a standard kennel, and the full day of dog daycare does them a lot of good. The staff is exceptionally nice and accomidating. We have kept them there for as little as one night to a little over two weeks on our honeymoon. When we came back, they had been nice enough to give them a bath before sending them home. I'm consistently impressed with the walk-thru, the flexibility of their scheduling and just how easy they make everything work. The dogs love going and come home tired from all the fun. My only suggestion, would be that more individuals are involved in the daycare. My Golden that is a little tamer seems to get 'beaten up' a little bit when he comes home from the daycare. I know it's just the dogs playing hard, and I wish they would be a little more mindful of that behavior and trying to prevent it. I recommend these guys though, and will continue to use them. read more

We boarded our 4 year-old French Bulldog at Ruffner's for four nights (Saturday night through Wednesday afternoon). This was our first time boarding her and we were quite nervous... We did a decent amount research and facility tours before deciding on Ruffner's. We took into consideration the price, the cleanliness of the facility, and the friendliness of the staff. We really liked how the Doggie Suites for boarding at Ruffner's were more than just wire cages... The Suites are setup with walls (like drywall) on the sides, to make them more private for the dogs. Additionally there are elevated beds for the dogs to lay on, rather than laying on the floor. Upon dropping our Frenchie off for her stay, we were greeted by two friendly young ladies who assured us everything would be fine! The one staff member told me a lot of dogs think they are the vet and asked me to walk towards the back room with her, so my dog would go along easier. Although I was sad to leave her, I knew she would be in good hands. Ruffner's encourages you to call or email to check-in on your dog, so we waited until Monday morning to do so. They told us she was doing fine, but not eating much (she is a picky eater to begin with and we weren't surprised by that). Hannah told us they were experimenting (with our approval) by adding some cheese to her food to see if that would entice her and were going to keep trying new things until they found something that worked. We picked her up on Wednesday afternoon and Hannah told us that pureed baby food mixed with our dog's food did the trick! Yay! I'm so glad they took the time to try new things to get our dog to actually eat. Our dog has a sensitive stomach and with her not eating much for two days, she ended up having a loose stool during her stay (which is not unusual for her even at home). Rather than just pretending everything was okay, Hannah was upfront and honest with us, letting us know she made a little bit of a mess in her doggie suite. They were nice enough to launder the bedding (towel) we had brought from home and you could tell they even wiped down her booty!! Way above and beyond...and much appreciated! I figured our dog would be depressed and mad at us for leaving her there for four days, but immediately upon being reunited in the lobby she was all kisses and super happy to see us! Surprisingly, she did not smell like a kennel at all (we still gave her a bath when we got home), but she didn't smell bad. She seemed to be her usual self immediately upon returning home...other than a little "hungover" / tired, which is to be expected. We couldn't have been more pleased with our decision to use Ruffner's to board our dog and will definitely be using them again in the future when we travel out-of-town. I would highly recommend them if you are looking to board your dog. read more

Simply put, absolutely the BEST place to board your pets. Ruffners came highly recommended by a friend. Boy were they right. This is the cleanest place I have ever seen for boarding pets. Our experiences are mixed. The rates are extremely reasonable for the area & we felt the sleeping accommodations were decent. We paid for both overnight & daycare. The exercise yard is pretty cramped for the number of dogs playing. A few of the dogs were extremely rough, perhaps not suitable for group play & I felt there should be more staff overseeing them. I saw a dog bite another dog & staff overlooked it. They didn't seem concerned even when I pointed it out & asked about dog temperament expectations. Made me uncomfortable. Overall, 3 stars. We've since found better accommodations for our beloved pets but we would and have used Ruffners short term in a bind. read more

I see that Ruffners responded a while ago. Well I have since taken my dog to other daycare/boarding facilities and have not had the same experience I have had at Ruffners before. The owners of the new daycare places we take our business to now have all said my dog Cody does not hump, i asked them, but he is terrific and trouble free. They both say he is a great daycare dog and boarder very friendly never dominant. If you read ruffners response to my initial review it is all lies. He stayed there on a busy weekend and greedy Ruffners took in any and all dogs, regardless of disposition. So the reality of the matter is all the aggressive dogs were pounding on my poor friendly well socialized dog and it was like a pack attack on cody I can only imagine. What kind of place has to issolate a calm submissive dog from the pack of aggressive dogs they let in?? I have since found a couple better places so I could care less about Ruffners now but do not listen to the BS. Look at some of the reviews where dogs are Ruffed up here. If you have a nice submissive dog do not bring it to ruffners as the place is poorly supervised and they let aggresive dogs in just to up thier bottom line.....not ensure that your dog has a safe stay. As someone said they dont have a web cam here cause they dont want you to see what goes on. read more

We have used Ruffners a couple of times in the past and had no issues, until this last stay. I boarded both of my dogs there for 5 days. When we picked them up the girl at the desk told us that one of our dogs had gotten injured during some "rough play" with another dog the previous day but they had looked it over, cleaned it up and that she was fine. I looked at it and it didn't seem to be an issue. 2 days later her eye is nearly swollen shut and definitely infected. She wound up with an 1 1/2" gash that required 5 staples to close. Ruffners was apologetic but I was reminded that "dogs in day care can get hurt" and that I had "signed a waiver when I brought them in". Use them knowing that they won't be responsible if your dog gets hurt in their care. I won't be going back read more

I boarded my dog here last weekend for 3 days. He came home, was coughing and throwing up worms. While he was boarded acquired an upper respiratory infection and worms in his system. I called to let them know and they had zero remorse of the situation and said that the vaccine doesn't guarantee that he won't acquire anything. I think that it was very unprofessional on their part. So, if you want your dog to come home healthy, I would say go to another place that actually cares. I am so highly disappointed and will make it known. My dog is almost 11 years old, and will hopefully pull through this! Shame on Ruffners, and shame on their whole staff! read more

There are no words to describe how comforting it is to know there is a place you can take your beloved pets when you have to be away from home for a day, week, whatever...a place where they are loved just as much and taken care of just as well as they are at home. They were extremely accommodating when we were moving to the area from overseas. The facilities are nice and they take great care of the animals. We usually use this kennel when we need to board. We have boarded our cat and our dog and have been happy with both. When we board our dog it gets to play with others during the day which is a big bonus since she is high energy and usually gets multi-mile walks. My one complaint is their policy around the weekends. You pay for Sunday even if you only want to board Saturday night and pick up early. There is no way to get around paying for Sunday when you travel which is a bit annoying. For a quick overnight downtown we have found another spot to take the dog. read more

We heard about Ruffners through some friends, so we were super excited about brining our 6 month old boxer for puppy daycare to give him a few hours to socialize and run off some energy. This was our first time ever dropping off our puppy and I don't think we will EVER be returning. When we picked up our puppy everything seemed fine, he looked happy and exhausted from running around for 4 hours, no initial complaints. The staff said he did an amazing job at socializing and had no problems at all. When he went to the bathroom it was super runny, we brushed it off thinking maybe he just got over treated. That night he would not eat and started acting not like himself. Again we just figured that he was exhausted and that his stomach was hurting. We got him pumpkin for his diarrhea. Saturday, he was still acting strange and did not eat till dinner time, and as soon as he ate he threw everything up. He then started throwing up every 30 minutes. We stayed up with him all night, and he would not stop throwing up and could not even keep water down. We ended up taking him to the emergency hospital early morning because he became so dehydrated, was shaking and poor little guy was still throwing up still. We dropped $500 at the vets on all of the medication they had to give him in order to just get him to stop throwing up. The vet said that he must have either interacted with some dog that was sick at the daycare,  or something he was given there really inflamed his whole gastrointestinal system. Turns out that all the dogs share the same watering bowl (great way to transfer sicknesses) and our pup was allowed to play with puppies that they were fostering (so there is no telling how healthy or up to date on all of their shots these puppies were). We also found out that our friends who also board their dog here, their dog also had the same exact symptoms and ended up in the hospital just a month ago. read more

I don't want to think that my experience is the way they treat every dog, but I do want to share so that others know. I have a young puppy and was extremely nervous about leaving him somewhere while I had to abruptly go out of town , but had no choice. Mind you, I had only had him about 2 weeks, my puppy is well groomed and already potty trained. He's very sweet and my baby. I dropped my puppy off on a Saturday morning. Everything seemed okay. I was asked how often I feed him and how much. And that was it. He was already whisked away as I was told not to make a big deal out of good bye. Fast forward to Monday morning when I am picking him up. The person behind the counter says she just saw him. That should have been a clue. She goes back and about 5 minutes later returned with just my puppy. I asked about his toys and she said they were being cleaned. Yet another clue. I asked for the toys and she went to get them. They were completely sticky and covered in dog urine. Then I picked up my puppy to take him home. He was completely covered in dog urine as well. Smelled awful and was sticky. He wasn't wet, just completely a mess. I was so upset that I just didn't know what to say or do. It was obvious he wasn't looked after and most likely the walks and playtime I paid for didn't occur. I'm so disappointed that this place felt that this was acceptable. I hope this was just a rare bad moment and not the normal way. read more

I have used Ruffner's several times now, and my dog is a social playful dog, but will submit if other dogs are being dominate. At dog parks and such when this consistently happens, he no longer likes to go. He always is happy to go to Ruffner's. My food and bones for my dog are always portioned out and it seems are used appropriately. Their prices are average to slightly under for the area, which is why I continue using them. Some days and some times their play ground gets a little over crowded, they should consider rotating dogs in and out of play yard on those busy days,but overall it's a great place with great staff. If I could give no stars I would. I needed to board my 8 1/2 month old unspayed female boxer and had gone to several places looking for the one that made me feel most comfortable. Ruffners is very clean and has spacious kennels for the dogs. They showed me the daycare area that looked ok but made me nervous that my dog could get hurt while I was away. They assured me that it would be fine and to bring her in for an aggression test. The test went ok and I took her back for another daycare visit to get her comfortable there before I left for my trip. When I picked her up I was told "Unfortunately we can not invite your dog back for daycare until she is spayed, she bit another dog in the face." I was stunned, not to say that my dog wouldn't bite but I have never seen her bite another dog even during play. They then proceeded to tell me that it wasn't necessarily her fault but because she isn't spayed she smells weird to other dogs and thats why she was attacked. They said she had 1 small cut but it was cleaned. On the car ride home my son shouted that she was bleeding from many spots. I examined her when we got home and found many puncture wounds bit down through the muscle on her hind legs (so if she bit the other dog in the face it was in defense of herself). We went to the vet and had to have her sedated for X-rays and stitches. The vet said it was ridiculous to say she smells different because she isn't spayed, if she was in her heat cycle yes but she was not and is not in her cycle. Thanks Ruffners so much for taking horrible care of my puppy. Perhaps the problem is the dog that keeps attacking boxer puppies and sending them to the vet for emergency treatment? Don't leave your dog at Ruffners. read more

Also was not told of extra day charge if not picked up by noon, so another day tacked on to the total. VERY EXPENSIVE for what you get. We came across Ruffner's after another daycare denied our business. The previous daycare had no problems with our dog, but would not take the chance of socializing him simply because of his breed. We turned to Ruffner's & have been very impressed with their services. They remembered our dog's name after his first visit & remembered our last name after the second visit. Tyson is happy when he is dropped off & even happier when he is picked up. Best of all, he sleeps for the rest of the evening once we return home. Our only complaint is that we've only seen the front desk. We have no idea what the back yard or the play rooms look like. Overall, we are very pleased with Ruffner's. read more

Words can't express how much I love Ruffner's and how much Henley loves it. I brought her to another kennel and the second time I brought her there, she refused to cross the threshold into the door. I urgently began looking for a new kennel. I found Ruffner's and it sounded perfect, so we figured we'd give it a try. Henley is overjoyed every time that we bring her there for daycare or for boarding (She actually gets mad at me when I pick her up from daycare because she wants to stay, lol). Prior to Henley being spayed, she was allowed to stay and kept away from contact with other pups (but got LOTS of love from the amazing staff) and she stayed safe during that time. The staff is always super accommodating, completely professional and entirely competent. They are always so excited to see Henley and it makes me feel great knowing that when I can't be there to care for her, that the staff at Ruffner's is not only making sure that she is well taken care of and fed but also loved. I have been taking our dogs here for a couple of years now and the team at ruffners do a GREAT job. They treat our pups like their own and my dogs are always pulling at their leashes to get inside to play. It is a good feeling to have a place you can keep your pups overnight when you need to go out of town that you know they will be happy about. Can't recommend them enough 5 stars! read more
