Arrived early with only a couple of other diners in the whole restaurant. Iconic but very dated decor. Server was very sweet and efficient. Salads were simple and lacked flavor. No bread was served with our salads. Pricey for portion size.

I've been here twice for high tea - the first experience was in September 2023. We had a pleasant experience and I got a cupcake for my birthday which was a surprise. I came back with a friend in June 2024 and the menu was slightly different (it changes seasonally and cannot be modified even if you make reservations). Overall it was an ok experience, but not worth the money in my opinion.

The Rugby Grille is located in the Townsend Hotel in downtown Birmingham. The restaurant is very small and created a warm and intimate environment. Service was extremely attentive and professional. Overall a very classy place! I decided to order the salmon and white fish entrees. I thought both had great portion sizes and a great flavor. I would have given 4 stars, however I found both entrees to be overcooked, especially for ordering medium on the salmon. The outer crust was absolutely delicious though! We also went with a mushroom flatbread that was on their specials menu. This was very tasty! Overall enjoyed my experience here.

We took advantage of room service as we chose to stay and relax for most of our stay.

The rugby grill is located inside the Townsend hotel. It is a small but charming restaurant that fills up quickly. You'll want to make reservations for sure. We arrived fairly late in the evening and we were lucky to get a table. The staff was friendly and quick to assist us with our choices. I was starving and had been dieting for months and wanted some real food! We both eyes the bread basket and decided that we should splurge and have some carbs. Well... This bread was amazing and the butter was good enough to eat in the spoonfuls. We contained ourselves (sort of) . The pork loin caught my eye and it was absolutely splendid. Cooked perfectly. Mouth watering and delicious. So absolutely tender. It was a hefty serving too which we enjoyed later as left overs. He chose to stick with a lighter fare and did the soup and salad (while I scarfed down my food lol). The French onion looked delicious but no croutons? They had a small variety of hand crafted cocktails. The bill was on the pricey side but you expect that being in Birmingham and being in the Townsend. They also offer room service until midnight which we took advantage of! We will most definitely be back.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night, the place was full & Service was great. We got to try a ton of different dishes, and all came out amazing. They also have a wide selection of wine. Prices are also reasonable with other restaurants I've been to. Recommended dishes here (name might be wrong: mushroom grits, duck wing, apple salad, mushroom & pasta, filet mignon, lamb chops, apple mousse dessert. So far everything we've tried here has been good & the food is consistent. I also think it's a good alternative from going down to Detroit for some fancy food. The food here is legit good, with good ingredients.

I went to this restaurant in july for my birthday, after quarantine time. The restaurant was not busy we sat outside . The food was good but not fabulous, customer service was good but not amazing the don't have any light in outside so when the sunset come up you fell you have to go, they dont have any decorations on the table The price expensive for nothing special . It is in nice area Birmingham downtown and nice walking after you done

Restaurant Week menu, Feb 2018

This was quite an excellent meal. Some coworkers and I went here today for Birmingham Restaurant Week - $15 for a 3-course lunch, including your choice of steak or swordfish for the entree. I ordered the garden salad and the steak, and dessert was salted caramel tiramisu cheesecake, I believe. Everything was fantastic. We started off with a bread basket, too, which had an interesting combination of breads, including matzoh; the rolls with (peppers?) inside them were my favorite. The garden salad had some pickled beets with it, as well. The steak was very good, and a coworker friend said that food-wise, she actually would recommend Rugby Grille over Capital Grille, where we usually go for Troy Restaurant Week. The potatoes came with blue cheese, which isn't my favorite, but luckily it was only a subtle taste. The cheesecake capped off our meal, and everyone agreed that it was delicious. The only issue we ran into was at the end - I had left my credit card there before I went to use the restroom, and our waiter took it and ran all 3 of our lunches on it. When I asked if he could redo it, he got a little annoyed, but still did, so my friends and I were able to each pay separately. Other than that, a fantastic dining experience, and probably one of my favorite Restaurant Week meals to date.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Rugby. Our server, Michael, was always there at just the right time. Never in the way, but anticipating our needs. We started off with the crab cake appetizer, which was amazing. It is 99.9% crab and not heavy at all. Two of them could make for a delicious main course. I had the salmon for my entree, and my daughter had the lamb chops. Both of us enjoyed our dishes. For dessert we tried the chocolate cake. It was moist and. It too rich. There is nothing we had that I would hesitate to recommend. This is a great spot for an upscale but not stuffy dining experience.

Really an exceptional experience overall! We had a Friday night 7pm reservation, I was greeted in the lobby and taken right to my table! My wife started with a Malbec she thought it was excellent I had a Harvey walbanger it was also very good! Then we started with salads the presentation on the salad was unique and appetizing. Then the chef sent out a fried rice sampler, very classy and again very tasty. Then I ordered the foie burger ($55) worth every penny, easily the best burger in town! My fiancée had the filet it was delicious and presented beautifully! This is probably the nicest restaurant in all of metro Detroit and I will definitely be back five stars all day!

Delicious cappuccino- pleasantly surprised how fancy and tasty it was !

My matcha latte was pretty mid -- not a coffee shop so I wouldn't necessarily expect anything incredible but it could have been hotter, at least. The frittata was very good and a generous portion -- I took part of it home for later. The pistachio pesto sauce really adds to it. I'd return to try more of their brunch menu (or others) without complaint -- why not!?

I do want to start with some thoughts before I give the highlights. We were charged a percent for using a credit card. I cannot speak to the in-person menu, but I combed the online menu and it did not mention that. We were also charged for ranch. Most places do not do that, and we were not informed there would be an upcharge. Most places allow you a sauce to go with fries. Also, for my meal, there is an image of an extra sauce which it did not come with, but we were charged for two small portions of ranch. Last, the server was just okay. I always enthusiastically ask questions to get to know more about a place. I asked if they had any other fruity drinks. She pointed to the drink menu and indicated just the Paloma. I said, but you have a full bar, this is the only fruity drink you make? She did not want to ask the bar, but I asked her to. The bar apparently only came up with one other drink idea, which I ended up getting two drinks listed on the menu (both very good) but it seemed like work for her to go out of her way to inquire. I also bet they could have made many fruity drinks, like maybe a Mai Tai, or some equivalent. Oh well. On the other hand, the Paloma was actually very good. It was a quality Paloma and I do recommend. Their other drink was seasonal with lavender, also a very nice drink. Most of the other places, like Honcho, I have no problem with getting a variety of drinks or inquiring about them, and the bar tender here did a great job. I came here because I was targeted by an ad on Instagram. This place was not on my radar, but since they created a meal (Steak-frites) very similar to Le Relais in Paris and New York, etc... I wanted to try it. It came with bottomless parm fries. The fries were crispy, savory, and delightful. The steak was super well cooked and was like butter. You did not even need a knife, it cut with a fork. Since I love next day leftovers, the steak was still super delicious and tender the next day. It was still like butter and cut with a fork. I would absolutely come back for that and bring the rest of my family. We also tried the tri-tip sandwich. We were told the bread was made fresh. I thought it was very good and very tender. My husband would have liked an au jus or horseradish sauce. He would try the hamburger next, but I would love another steak-frites, like right now! We were sad the coffee and pastry section closed early. In the past, at Honcho, we would get coffee and pastry after dinner since their coffee tends to be really good and quality. I would consider coming for brunch to try some. We talked to a gentleman who was part of the business as he was working hard. He was very kind and knowledgeable and took the time to hear our thoughts. I told him I was here for the steak. He thought I had a "but". I did not, it was great and I hope they can maintain that price point and the second serving of fries, because that was my main reason for visiting. He let us know the menu recently changed. I am not able to compare since this was my first time, but I liked that they had a steak dinner and pizza. If we come back my oldest loves this group's pizza, she gets it at Vinsetta, and this one looked very good.

The…read morequality and consistency are great, though I honestly think the meat would shine even more as a traditional 1/4 or 1/2 pound patty rather than a smash burger. A thicker cut would really let you taste the high-quality flavor of the beef. If you're going to order, here are a few pro tips: Get the sauce on the side: It's an excellent sauce, but you are much better off dipping. Otherwise, the burger will totally get drenched and lose the meat flavor profile. The bacon situation: They smash little bits of bacon directly into the patty. You can barely taste it this way, and it would be significantly better just served as traditional strips on top. So I would prob get it without next time. The Tallow Fries: These have huge potential, but unfortunately, mine arrived pretty soggy via delivery. I should have thrown them in the air fryer to crisp them back up, as I know they would be amazing fresh out of the fryer dripping in tallow. And they would have worked much better as larger almost steak cut fries to let the tallow flavor shine more. However as i ate them, i would still choose cajun 5 guys fries well done over them. My order for a burger and fries came to almost $40 (including tip) through their delivery service. Is it worth that price point for a delivery order? Probably not. However, the core ingredients are so good that I definitely plan to visit the restaurant in person so I can experience the food fresh and at its best.

Deep sigh. Marrow please don't start messing with excellence. I'm leaving this a 4 star review…read morebecause up until this point, I have LOVED Marrow. The smash burgers are fire. I've gotten my Thanksgiving turkey from here. They often have yummy soups (especially the chorizo chowder). All of the being said, I was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED today. My bf and I typically get one burger and one turkey sandwich and exchange halves. Today the turkey was awful and I threw it away uneaten. You changed everything that made it delicious. Today it was on the hard ciabatta roll. The turkey was just slices slapped on the bread when it used to be kind of shredded. There was no spicy giardenera.. The brie was just some sort of melted brie slices when before it was a brie fondue sauce. I wanted to cry. This is the quickest way to lose customers.. changing what's tried and true

The exterior and the interior are top-notch and it is definitely a place to dress incredibly nice and show off your skill in ordering bougie cocktails and high-end spirits. My bf, his mom, and I were treated to dinner here in June 2026 by my boyfriend's uncle, who lives a couple blocks away and goes here regularly. After deciding on just sticking with water for our drinks, we ordered the artisan garlic bread ($8) to split between the four of us. I must be a bread obsessive person because I LOVED this version of garlic bread - it is very different than the Texas Toast frozen brand you buy at the supermarkets, just FYI. The bread is super crusty and the sauce is barely garlic-y. I was stuck on ordering myself the maple seasoned sweet potato waffle fries ($9) no matter what, so to offset allllllll the calories I have already had earlier in the day (as well as with the garlic bread and fries), I ordered the Sicilian Caesar salad ($14) with blackened chicken added on ($12). For $26, this was one very basic chicken Caesar salad for how dang expensive it was. But I guess I was trying to be healthy in a gastropub, so that's on me. The others ordered fish and chips ($29), bangers and mash ($30), and the grilled salmon bowl ($32). I know that the prices are high to match the clientele in this high earning Michigan community, but I still think the prices are just all-around way too high. Perhaps the fish and chips alone was worth the price out of the four mains. I tasted the fish and it was perfectly fried and the portion of fish and fries were generous. By this point, we were full and skipped dessert although they had a nice selection on their menu. The service was professional and prompt, despite the place being packed. I didn't pay the bill, fortunately, but I don't think the mains are worth the price. If in the area, I would love to come back for a happy hour and get a cocktail and eat more waffle fries and artisan garlic bread! Perhaps on a day when I am carbo-loading haha.

Thankfully, there was an extra set of silverware on the table that someone gave me. Also whoever's in the kitchen, or whoever prepares the desserts, apparently didn't think to look at the menu and see that there were four ingredients to my dessert. They initially only gave me two of them. I had to ask for the other two and basically build it myself. Having said that, I loved the atmosphere and the food, once it was correct, was delicious! I had the BHP Crunchy Friatta (their take on a frittata). It was delicious, but those Hungarian peppers were SPICY!! I had the Strawberries & cream for dessert (from the brunch menu). They literally brought me a bowl of strawberries and cream, so I told the waiter it was supposed to have granola, which he didn't know. After he left to get me the granola, I remembered it was also supposed to have a raspberry compote type thing on it. He also didn't know that.
