I went in on a Thursday night for happy hour with friends. We are quite the happy hour junkies so the bar was set very high. The Rugby Grille surpassed that bar that we set. I got the lobster deviled eggs and my friend got the tempura shrimp, both were amazing. We later moved over to The Corner and had the sliders that come out of the Rugby kitchen, they were unreal!!! The chicken fried bacon on them bought them to another level of greatness!!! The drinks were also very good. The French gimlet was delicious and the happy hour prices can't be beat! Don't forget to take a look at their wine list...you can certainly tell whoever is in charge of the wine ordering knows what they are doing. In fact, it makes me wonder if they bought in a master sommelier just to put their list together! I'm a Vouvray fan, and it's fairly rare to find it on menus, but The Rugby has it! The service was great and we were checked on frequently by a very nice gentleman Jared. He clearly is in management but had no problem showing me where the ladies room was. It's refreshing to see that kind of service instead of someone just directing you over to the general direction. We all said we can't wait to go back again and would love to try out their brunch and dinner menu. If happy hour food was that good I can only imagine how good their full menu is!!! read more

1 star for bad service. My sister and I were meant to have tea at the Mad Hatter Bistro for my birthday but there was a misunderstanding with my reservation. I decided to try the rugby grille. We were sat and we ordered tea and the cheese platter to start. We fully intended to order the cheese platter, then after we finished that order lunch items and dessert. I'm not sure how this was miscommunication because i said can we "Start with.." After our tea and cheese, and bread basket were brought out that is where the service ended. We never received refills on hot water, or even an explanation for the types of cheese on the plate. (If I'm paying 30$ for cheese and bread I would like to at least knoe what kinds they are.) Finally after probably the worst tasting cheese we have ever tried, I flagged down another person for the check, paid and we left. We waited well over 25 minutes for someone to check on us. I even walked to the car parked at 15th and old woodward, to pay for more parking. While my sister waited to order more food, and returned and still no one checked on her. Omg I'm just shocked! You would think the server would at least know the menu! He did not even know the cheeses. First of all they should be able to describe the menu in case people have dietary restrictions! I mean of all the places you would think they would be cautious and understand their own menu. After that I made a simple order for an omelette with spinach and cheese and of course they don't bring it out with the cheese. The guest on my table ordered a salmon salad but they forget the salmon. So while the rest of our guests are eating we are twiddling our thumbs waiting. Our waiter Jeffery was horrible! Before Covid my husband & I would celebrate our anniversary every year at Rugby Grill. It was my favorite & most frequented restaurant mainly because of their Dover sole. The dish was presented table side where it was filleted. It was always cooked perfectly, seasoned impeccably & delicious. This year's anniversary was the first time back at Rugby Grill since Covid. We were so excited about ordering their Dover sole. When we ordered we were informed that they would not be filleting table side since they had new protocols since Covid. We asked if it was still cooked the same and we were assured it was. When the dish arrived it looked heavily coated with flour, seasoning and oil. After one bite, the fish tasted as if it had been precooked and then reheated. It was oily, overcooked, dried out, and heavily seasoned with a Italian type seasoning. This is not the delicate Dover sole that Rugby Grill is know for. This dish was horrible. We will not be going back. What a HUGE disappointment. The new chef should be ashamed to present this and should be humble enough to go back to the old Dover sole recipe that Rugby grill was known for. read more

It really hurts me to leave rugby 1 star, but they so deserve it. I have been coming here for years, this used to be a wonderful restaurant my wife and I would frequent. The past 2 years things have taken a turn for the worst... The staff blame it on poor management and the rotating door of executive chefs in the kitchen.. The complementary pastrie basket that this establishment used to offer clients now costs $11 bucks. Much of the bread they use comes in frozen. I ordered the blackened chicken sandwich for $16 which is very small and is served on rubbery frozen baguette bread. Shame on you for thinking this is ok. I can honestly get a better sandwich at panera bread for $9 bucks. I had to send my sandwich back and request a non frozen bread alternative like their sour dough which I was told is brought in fresh from another bakery. By the time I had received my food back, my wife was finished eating and she had to watch me eat. What kind of line cook playing the roll as executive chef would make that call, to serve a sandwich on baguette that has the texture of tire rubber? A line cook playing the roll as an executive chef perhaps? The corners being cut here scream inexperience and poor management. As for the service, its questionable as well these days. Service used to be top notch, there are still a couple original staff members that I adore and enjoy seeing when I come in, but some of the newer staff over the past 2 years are not very good at all, Some are very unprofessional. It has been a year since I ate here so my wife and I decided to give it a try and see if anything has changed? Nothing has changed and it is really sad to see. The Townsend is truly hurting their own reputation around town the past couple years. People talk and many say the rugby grille is not good at all anymore. As a couple employees suggested to me, the rugby grill needs better management and leadership both FOH and BOH. I will hope for the best and I will return next year one final time to see if anything has changed. I will update my review then. We came here for our wedding anniversary, and have been here for more casual meals and dessert before. . It was easy to make the reservation on open table, and putting a note about our anniversary on the reservation was great because we had rose petals and a darling chocolate mousse cake for dessert, on the house! Dining: We shared the cheese platter, which was unfortunately not good and also poorly introduced by the server - both the cows milk hard cheeses tasted very similar, while the chèvre was less pungent than I would like. The accompanying almonds and jam and honey were very good! The amuse bouche was hummus with a cheese crisp, and this was delicious. My entree was the table side prepared Dover sole, which was alright, but the beurre blanc was overpowering and should be added with a lighter touch. The accompanying beans and almonds were excellent. My husband's shrimp and mushroom entree with pasta (one of the specials) was very good, and the mushrooms added a robust meaty flavor to the sauce. We ended the meal with cappuccinos (strong!) and the aforementioned chocolate mousse cake. Ambience and service: Excellent! Attentive as always. I had a breakfast business meeting at this Grille, thinking it might be a good restaurant since it's owned by The Townsend Hotel. I ordered a vegetarian omelette and made sure to ask the waiter not to have any meat in it. I remembered this vividly because the waiter joked and asked me if I wanted hot spices on it. I said not this early in the morning. I also ordered potatoes to go with the meal. I took one bite of the omelette and I noticed a strange pink ingredient coming out. I checked it and it was full of bacon inside. I called Mr. Waiter to tell him, and he blamed it on the cook. There were hardly any customers in the restaurant so it was not really busy for this kind of eatery to make this mistake and miss a simple instruction. The waiter apologized and brought me another omelette; it was vegetarian alright but with spinach, which I asked him to exclude. The potatoes and the omelette practically tasted nothing even with lots of salt, pepper, and ketchup. I certainly do not recommend this restaurant. read more

Such a great dining experience at the Rugby Grille. I was very pleased with the food, service and ambience of the restaurant. Courtney, our server was so helpful with menu suggestions and even gave us some wine tasting so we could choose which one was best to go with the wagyu we ordered. Abdul was always filling our waters regularly and every time I parted from my seat he would come and fold my napkin. I felt well taken care of from beginning to end and I was very impressed. This place is terrible now. I've been going here for years, since I live within walking distance. With the pandemic I haven't been here in a bit. My kids were in from college for Easter and we wanted to come in and sit on the patio for apps and desert, after 5pm. I called and the hostess said they weren't busy, now that the Easter brunch reservations have ended...come on down, there's plenty of open seating outside. Once we got there we saw all of the available tables outside, but the hostess said that I had said we wanted to have dinner and that is the only way she'd seat us. I asked for the manager which never came out, so we left and went to the Daxton, which was very busy. This is a new hotel in town that has great service. I will never go back to the Townsend nor the Rugby Grille again. They've lost a loyal customer. I see why they had a bunch of open tables....beware!! read more

For a stress free Christmas Dinner, this place was wonderful! The soup of the day was parsnip puree, root veggie delight! The steak was prepared perfectly, grilled writh a crispy outside and tender soft on the inside. My quasi-vegetarian sister had a salad, with peach vingrette, a stuffed baked potato and roasted brussels sprouts with white beans and a small amount of chorizo. Fantastic! Everything is ala carte, so I ordered the roasted asparagus. Leslie, our friendly, but not overly familiar server, was the essence of excellent service. We finished with black tea, Harney and Sons for me and Lipton for Annie. That they had a choice is wonderful. And you cannot eat here without sampling the famous Townsend Hotel Bakery desserts. Simple gals, we opted for the apple crisp ala mode. A leisurely relate as it takes 8 minutes to finish the crisp before they add Michigan made Ray's vanilla ice cream. Merry Christmas y'all! It has been one of my favorite spots in Birmingham for delicious late night dinners or indulgent brunches (even since I was a kid), but the last time I went there the food and ambiance was SUB-PAR. Perhaps it's because I attended dinner during Birmingham's restaurant week? I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt. Even though the steak tar-tar and waiter were on-point, The cheese on the onion soup was burnt to charcoal The bird was overcooked... chewy is an understatement. Hostess was inept. She didn't bother to take my coat and forgot some of the menus. The table I made a reservation at was seated in the lobby of the hotel and not in the restaurant. Not only that, it was next to the door. I froze the whole night even while I wore my coat. Why didn't they tell me that was the only table available? I would have chosen another night to go. When I constructively suggested to management that, in future, they alert patrons that their reserved table is in the lobby, I was brushed off and referred to as "friend." I traveled here in a blizzard to try the food (yes that's how crazy i am about good food), and it was well worth the tumultuous journey! The setting is quaint, with an English Tea Party-esque decor. I indulged and had the $55 hamburger. It's fat on top of fat, foie gras on a juicy burger. A fat overload, it vulgar, it's not well balanced and it's all wrong on multiple levels of culinary snobbery but who cares? Call it the Donald Trump of burgers. This burger with a generous layer of foie gras is a glorious celebration of gluttony, flashiness and pleasure. While it might seem odd to the white wine sipping, sushi eating Birmingham foodies that this McMansion of a meal would be born in this precious little town, it's a reminder that Birmingham is still a Midwestern flyover zone. It's the perfect dish to pair with your over-sized house, fat Rolex watch and newest gas guzzling unnecessarily high horse powered car. You'll need the extra horse power to drive home after the extra pounds you'll gain from your festival of fat on a plate. The contrast of consuming such an American creation in a clubby boutique hotel that looks and feels like it was helicoptered from an apartheid British enclave 100 years ago, makes this dish all the more appropriate because when the pitch forks come I cannot think of a better fitting final meal. The Townsend always gives me 5-star service. I am giving this review 4-stars not because of a lack of excellence. It's missing a star because I expect the Townsend and the Rugby Grille to have more class. read more

I made a last second reservation with a group of friends (party of 6) and they were very accommodating and able to make arrangements within a few minutes. I loved the ambience, food tasted delicious. Our waitress was nice and polite, service was efficient as well. I really wanted the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream which we got on the house as we were celebrating a special occasion for one of my friends. However I do wish they would make it a part of their dessert menu so we have the option to order it whenever we visit next and not just for a special occasion. Food is quite good and service impeccable. We were in the dining room which was quite nice. I would not recommend sitting in the hallway. It looked cramped. Everyone was pleasant and very knowledgeable. Onto the food... We were there for breakfast. I did not find the prices particularly exorbitant. The portions were HUGE!!! I have to admit I was not a fan of the pastry basket. For some reason everything on there tasted quite old. Stay away from the basket. Not worth the calories. I had the creme brûlée french toast. It was good but I have had better. It was topped with whipped cream and fresh berries. Yum! The berry compote was out of this world!!! I would get it again. My companions both got the crab eggs Benedict which they raved about. All in all a very nice breakfast! read more

He was annoyed I was discouraged with how my food turned out. Then, he suggested that we get another Caesar salad for the table. This tiny suggestion, turned out to cost $79 in salad! He said he'd chop it table side. Clearly he just wanted to up the bill. Regardless, with his attitude and throwing of the plate, we will never go back. There was a group of us that went here for dinner to celebrate an event. Everything started out great with mostly friendly staff. The food was kind of slow to come out, especially considering nobody got big dishes (mostly appetizers, salads, etc). But the food was delicious so it almost made up for the long wait. Towards the end of the night (almost 2 hours from arrival), I asked for my bill and the waiter asked if everything was going to be separate so we all said yes. Then he said something about eating cake that I guess the group host had ordered...well, I had already ordered my own cake and ate it by this point so that was kind of disappointing that it wasn't mentioned when I ordered dessert. I would have likely gotten something different if they had mentioned that but instead, I missed out on the cake that our group ordered. About 30 minutes later, the waiter said he wasn't able to put our bills separately because he couldn't remember how to divide the orders up. While it was nice he was being honest, it was still aggravating...especially since I had already asked for mine and only had 1 item. Not to mention, he didn't say anything like that when we asked for bills the first time. Anyways, they brought one big bill to the group host so she divided it up and gave it to them to put on separate bills. By this point, the staff was getting aggravated, which was showing with their changing attitudes. When we tried to give them payment with the receipts, they were getting flustered because they didn't want to mix up the bills. For this, I would recommend that they use the receipt holders for each bill, as that would have made it much easier for them (plus it's more professional). So it took even more time waiting for them to come back to take the payment and return. Needless to say, I expected more from the staff. I worked in downtown Birmingham for about 6 years so I'm very familiar with the area and would expect the best service from the Townsend's own restaurant. I understand groups can be a headache and take more time but the staff attitude and long waits were disappointing. I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Our favorite place for me and wife to have Sunday brunch. I always tip the valet guys a $20 and they my truck up front. It's located in the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. The lobster omelet was out of this world. The French toast was also exceptionally good. It's had berries and strawberries which made it amazing. This is the spot to eat at for brunch in Birmingham. Very unsatisfying evening. Menu, and wine list, overpriced for what it delivered. A friend and I ordered the rib eye special that included morel mushrooms. A number of them were gritty - literally tasted like they had rolled them around in sand before serving them. I questioned the waiter. He went back to the chef. Chef's answer was: "the process of rehydrating the mushrooms caused the grittiness." Really! Trust me, it didn't taste salty, it just tasted gritty. No apologies, no offers to make it right. Apparently the chef is right in all things even if his explanation makes as much sense as a 2-year old explaining why he knocked over a flower vase. Additionally, was completely non-plussed with the sommelier. I was asking about a several of the chateauneuf's on the menu and was open to additional pairings. (BTW we were having rib eye and salmon, so a bit of a mix). I was trying to open up the conversation as to what else is on his wine list, but he focused rather on only the two bottles I had mentioned and was, frankly, somewhat dismissive of a more open conversation. Additionally, the wine list is very over-priced with only a handful of bottles in each category less than $125/bottle. For example: A Chateau Beaucastel which would retail for around $75-85 was listed for $300. Overall assessment: Over priced and under serviced. read more

I love the Townsend Hotel, and I love the Rugby Grill. The old school hotel vibe of the bar and grill is traditional yet urbane, and the small outdoor seating is fantastic. I generally have pretty decent meals there, and the menu choices are exceptional. Yet despite how fond of the place I am, it simply isn't more than a 3.5 out of 5, here's why . . . First, the service, both front of the house, and wait staff, isn't particularly professional. The competence is something I would expect from a big chain bar and grill along Big Beaver Rd. The familiarity also fits that setting too. The inexperienced waitstaff insists on explaining to me how "beautiful" everything is, while falling down in their efforts to get things done in a timely fashion and to make me comfortable. This may seem like nit picking, but the Rugby Grill prices are some of the highest in the area, and it's very clear that they set out to be a fine dining establishment. Another knock on the Rugby Grill is that it is one of the worst cocktail bars in the city. I am of the decided opinion that a high-quality hotel should have a very good cocktail bar, particularly when it is this small of a room. The Rugby Grill's bar service is a joke. Collinses come from mixes, are topped with bright red candied cherries, and arrive in goblets. The casual place down the street from them uses a proper Collins glass, Luxardo cherries, and fresh lemon juice, and they're half the price. They also rely less on the "gun" than the Rugby Bar does. So much wasted potential, but I look forward to them eventually waking up and stepping up their game when new competition lands in town. read more

Spent Mother's Day with my wife and kids at what I thought would be a memorable experience. It was memorable but only for the rude, slow, dispassionate service, crappy overflow decor with standard hotel meeting room tables, wobbly chairs all for $65 per head! By the way, they weren't even busy! When we asked to order, the waiter told us to either select all of our courses immediately or he would have no choice but to come back later when we were better prepared! We chased them down for drinks, were told that items were nut-free only to find out they were mistaken. The sad part about this debacle was that the food was really exceptional. The duck confit, smoked salmon and desserts were well-prepared and beautiful - just not enough to overcome the experience. The price was not the issue but for $400 for five people the service and experience was severely lacking. We will never return! read more

I'm so sad, but - boo! I grew up in the area, so the Rugby Grille was always a special evening standard. The food and service were always top notch - and they still are. I made a reservation for a group of friends for Restaurant Week, when lots of Birmingham restaurants do a 3 course meal for $25. The Rugby Grille was offering a 3 course meal for $35. Fine, I thought, it's the Rugby Grille. It will be wonderful. We arrived and were greeted and seated promptly in the hallway portion of the restaurant, at the very back. I've sat in the hallway before and normally, it's fine. Tonight, it wasn't. We were next to a set of double-doors into a small entry way: to the right, doors going outside; to the left, elevators; straight on into a large reception area with a large, loud party. There was a constant stream of hotel guests walking past to get to the elevator, continuing their loud conversations as they walked past our chairs, dragging kids, and frankly, bumping our chairs and pushing past. Furthermore, the party was loud; I could hear the guests, a DJ, etc., on top of the people clumping up in that entry way, talking. At one point, a man in a ridiculous sombrero and fake mustache was pulling on a mariachi costume. What the heck?? The food was good, but the portions were tiny. I know it's Restaurant Week and all, and the restaurants might offer smaller portions for the $25, but the Rugby Grille was charging $35; I don't think it should have felt cheap. I would probably still come to eat off the regular menu, because the food, although very expensive, is very good. But I wouldn't come back with a big group, because I won't ever risk being seated in that hallway again. If you come, be sure to make your reservation for the restaurant portion so you're not seated in a busy hallway. read more

Can't go wrong with the restaurant of the toniest hotel (Townsend) in the Oakland County! I've eaten here several times and the food and service are always consistently great. The restaurant has a classic, upscale setting. Great menu selection. The portion is just right, and always tasty - love Tuna, Salmon, Dover Sole...and the bread basket! Attentive service. Although i don't see explicit dress code for the restaurant, better to be a bit formal and nicely. it has been our anniversary tradition for the last 11 years to have breakfast at the rugby. apparently, they are under new management and it showed. upon our arrival at 8:30 we were told we had to have reservations in order to sit in the room. we have never...i repeat never experienced the dismissive hostess, non accommodating attitude even after we mentioned we wouldn't tie up the table. we ended up sitting outside in a hallway type area where a distant table had 4 gentlemen talking business very loudly. food was mediocre. my usual egg white frittata was tasteless using different ingredients than in the past and served in a tacky cast iron skillet and accompanied with overdone toast. when we were finished i saw that some of the tables/booths were never seated while we were there. so much for those "reservations." i guess our tradition will end as we will not return. read more

The Rugby Grille is a nice place with good food and a big price tag. If you come for dinner, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg. The one thing that is worth it (and less expensive) are the hamburgers which are a pretty unique thing. They are $18, which for a hamburger is a lot, but they taste pretty good and I am not even a fan of hamburgers. The Rugby Grille piles a lot of things on top...things I wouldnt necessarily include on a hamburger...for example, a sunny side up egg on top? no thanks...that had to come off immediately. But besides that, it was a good tasting burger with an interesting blend of toppings. The fries were good too. What you are really paying for here is the atmosphere and the surrounding company. Came to eat on july 4th, beautiful day, outside tables open, but were told itvwould be a 35 minute wait outside so decided to eat inside. We had three different people promising to get us water, after pursuing this and we asked to order, bread was brought but had to ask twice for bread plates. Our salads did not come so we asked several waitstaff people. Everyone was slow, non responsive. Outside tables remained empty. The meal was ok but from start to finish 11/2 hours. Frustrating. This is another Restaurant Week review-I love me some Restaurant Week! The waiter recommended a great wine, but it went downhill from there. The soup was non-memorable and I ordered a lobster pasta dish that did not appear on their regular menu. The saving grace was the wine, although the chocolate tart was not bad. The Rugby Grille is fantastic. The food is ridiculously delicious, they have a large menu (I've never had anything that was less than super), and the staff is friendly and professional. I've never had to make reservations and they've been able to accommodate me, but I wouldn't recommend that during Sunday bunch times, where it can get too busy for "walk-ins". I've been there for breakfast, brunch, dinner, and drinks with friends. It's a nice atmosphere and no matter what I'm wearing, or how much I order, the service is always wonderful. You can wear jeans at any time, but will also fit in perfectly if you want to dress up a bit. This is DEFINITELY not a bar/restaurant that you want to watch a game at, however. There is a TINY television at the corner of the bar and that's it. My only complaint is that it's a bit pricey. But, hey--it's Birmingham--what else would you expect? read more

Can't believe it's been two years. I eat here probably once or twice a month, even if just for drinks and appetizers. Had brunch Christmas Day. The food is very good. Some misses and some basic stuff, soups are always decent but average. Service is always good and as a regular it's nice to be treated as such. The staff is accommodating, friendly without being pretentious and makes a meal there alone or with people a fun and good experience. People are dressed fancy or casual. It has good vibe at night. I tend to come here for lunch or brunch and it's usually about a 3 -4 star however this dinner experience I just had was a 1, if your coming for a wedding food is great, use to think the ambiance here could compete with the montage in Beverly Hills however it's Lost it's quality, food was not good, dry over cooked order medium well and received burned food, told management and they didn't take it off the bill or anything, eventually after explaining to the waiter again he made the change but still no expectations, would have had better food at a lower class restaurant for the price and the name you expect wayyyy more my bill was the same as ocean prime and this has no comparison to quality, fries are better at j Alexander's, appetizer lacked flavor the only decent thing is the salads and you would think how can they screw up a salad, they almost did weigh dry in edible chicken, even the starter bread is not made in house, you can tell it's prepackaged bread, won't be going back the only exception is getting a hot chocolate to go or a bakery cookie they only excel at desserts at this point, also the wait time for good take 40 mins to bring your meal when restaurant is half empty is just not exceptional also the menu needs a refresh maybe they need a new executive chef, when your paying for quality you should get it and unfortunately there selection is no longer quality read more

Was at the hotel for work travel. I expected typical hotel restaurant food- over priced, under whelming. I've learned years ago to avoid hotel dining but I arrived late at night and it was very cold and snowy, so I traded value and experience for convenience...or so I thought I was in for a pleasant surprise. The food was very good and I happen to hit it during restaurant week. 3 course meal for $30, which is an amazing value. My experience was a 5 (for a $30 meal) I did notice that the prices on the regular menu seemed more in line of what I expected, even higher actually. $24 for a burger? That's high for NY and SF, just plain out of whack for MI. Since most people won't have the good fortune to hit restaurant week, I gave them 4 stars as to not be misleading. read more

The prawn cocktail was excellent and the only thing we had that was worth the high price. Both salads we had were under-portioned but tasty. The steak tar-tar was also delicious but we are not accustomed to having it diced vs ground & w capers & Dijon mustard. For $40 the portion was extremely small ( my guess would be 6 oz and $25 seems more reasonable) but I guess that's what you have to look forward to when you're paying for the location inside the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. Finally made to Rugby Grill for lunch since the pandemic. We were able to eat outside which was lovely. The omelettes we order were inedible. The toast came burnt and the insides of the omelet. The omelet itself was like eating rubber. The manager did offer to remake it but the service was so slow we needed to leave. We were given a bread basket after we requested it and that was the best part of the lunch. Nothing came with the omelet except the burnt toast for a lot of money. This is a restaurant week review. We went as a celebratory dinner and ordered off the restaurant week menu. Overall the portions were small, which is expected at a fine dining establishment during restaurant week, but the food left a little to be desired. I had the salad, which had candied walnuts and bleu cheese. It was good, and paired well with the vinaigrette dressing. Next was a lobster "essence" and mushroom pasta dish. I feel it is necessary to mention that this is lobster "essence", because the description on the menu is quite misleading. Although the menu states the dish has Maine Lobster, I was only able to identify 1 or 2 pieces of lobster in the whole dish. The shallots and mushrooms provided an earthy flavor, and the lobster essence was overpowered by their flavors. Overall I felt the flavors in the dish were, while good, very weak. I was expecting bigger flavors. We finished the evening with chocolate tart, which was good. Not too sweet, not too bitter, and the strawberry syrup was quite tasty. I think we made a mistake ordering off the restaurant week menu, but I'm not sure that I'd return given the prices and blandness of the food. read more
