Service is often poor. It took nearly 45 minutes to get a sushi roll, we had to ask repeatedly for wasabe, we were charged for a tiny dish of spicy mayo (which is petty, I think), and when we dined outdoors we were basically ignored for very long periods of time. The fish is fresh, the rating is based on the uncomfortable atmosphere created by spotty service. Easy to fix, but they have not fixed it. read more

Had a really good experience at Rumble Fish Sushi. I give 4 stars because 5 stars is perfect. My wife and I went here on a recommendation from a friend. The atmosphere was interesting, it reminded me of eating at a friends house in a sub-division of Cupertino at where I grew up. I almost always ask the waitress "what should I order" but I didn't have to this time because there was a "chef special" roll with a "?" In the menu... I asked her about it and she said it changes, but be prepared for it to be spicy. I ordered it! It was AMAZING... It was a tempura shrimp inside with spicy tuna and cucumber. On the top was a rainbow roll-ish (tuna, salmon, albacore, and unagi) and spicy mayo. On top of that was a mixture of green salads and seaweed salads toped with rooster sauce. It was great! I can say enough about how much I liked this roll. To finish up, service was good nothing special. Salad had a good dressing, and my wife's sashimi was decent. Wow - reading some of the other reviews and since I go here probably 2-3 times a week I am wondering - what the heck??? I have been eating sushi since I was a little kid in 1976 and there were pretty much NO non-Japanese folks in the area eating raw fish. I have read many sushi books and even make sushi and sashimi at my house: the point is, I know of what I speak. Let me tell you here and now: Rumble Fish is *definitely* the best sushi place in Scotts Valley (yes, I have tried them all) and is probably the best in Santa Cruz County (yes, I have tried most). In the current sushi climate, you can go as far off the map as you'd like. I'm not interested in places that offer deep fried Twinkie rolls with Sriracha-wasabi remoulade, ok? When I go to a sushi place, I am eating mainly nigiri sushi. As what you may call a sushi purist, I am looking at a few things: the freshness of the fish, the skill of the knife work in cutting and serving the fish, a proper fish-to-rice ratio, and, the thing that sets sushi places apart the most, the taste of the rice and the temperature at which it is served. Rumble Fish scores very, very well on all of the above, and they do it EVERY DAY. Pricing is also very fair for what you get. The "RUM" & "BLE" sushi lunch specials are darned-near a steal. And even the miso soup is noticeably better and richer here than at most other sushi spots. So - read what you want, believe who you want. Are you about the FOOD or are you about the decor and how long you might have to wait to get a menu in your hands? Some of the best food I've ever had, however the service is a little lacking. Any dining experience is greatly improved when the waiter knows the menu. Particularly love the deep fried sushi! Didn't even know it existed! Beer selection is weak, especially for being located in the craft beer capital of the state. Atmosphere was nice, relaxing and quiet. We just finished eating our takeaway lunch from Rumble. I had the three item combo and my husband got the chicken teriyaki lunch. My combo included chicken katsu, salmon teriyaki and tempura. All were delicious! This will easily become a regular lunch spot for us. We ordered online and pick up was easy and very safe. They have excellent precautions in place. The restaurant also added a spicy salmon kama on the house and it was amazing!!! If you have a more lenient schedule, you can indulge in half price beers and sake. DO NOT COME HERE IF TOU HAVE ANY ALLERGIES. Came here tonight for dinner with the family, my sister has a serious gluten allergy and sushi is one of her safe foods. She is extremely aware of what she can and cannot eat but tonight because of the mislabeling of imitation crab as normal crab meat she is now suffering a severe migraine. When we addressed this issue with staff we were basically told that there was nothing they could do about it. We paid for a separate roll without the imitation crab and were not offered a refund or even an apology. Dirty little dump with rude servers. The sushi is not fresh, it taste like it's old or they don't keep the fish at temp. They have extremely rude servers that run around like bulls bumping into things. My friend and I were leaning over the table towards each other talking and the server reached in between us to grab our soy sauce to give to another table. Really? She bumped me in the face with her shoulder and shook the table so our waters spilled. Never did bring us the soy back. The food was average at best. All in all not worth it. read more

Went there yesterday, Sunday around 5pm after Scott's Valley Art & Wine. First time...no indoor service but totally cool... I could tell they spent a lot of $$ on the outside patio, it was high end. The umbrellas were built in LED's which aren't cheap. Got the food and it was amazing! We ordered 2 rolls and a Hamachi sashimi. We ordered Kirin's and a Hot Sake. The "small Sake" was $1.00 so we went for that and it was a very, very decent cup worth and delicious. The large was $2.00, WOO WHAAATT! The Hamachi was super fresh and as good or better than our other favorite Sushi restaurant. The two rolls we ordered were top notch. One of them was the best roll flavor I've ever had...the name of it was (fire-something) and the smoked flavor took me to a place I haven't ever been before. Can't wait to go back! She gave us a meal on the house after apologizing several times. At the end of our meal she was so rude- she came out and told us we had not left our signed credit card receipts. This was a solid four-star restaurant that gets an extra star because they were so darn kind! My friend and I decided to meet for lunch at Rumble Fish, a restaurant that neither one of us had ever been to before... so it was a gamble. Although we left at the same time, she arrived over twenty minutes later than me, and this is where the kindness came into play. I was seated and given two menus (lunch and special order). My drink order was taken and water (with cucumber slice) was brought. As time ticked by, I was prepared to order an appetizer or something... but an appetizer-sized complementary sushi roll arrived "with compliments of the chef". I was thankful! After my friend arrived, we decided to order some sushi. Here is another example of the kindness surrounding Rumble Fish: taking my friend's order. I love to spend time with my friend, but she wants to tell every waiter to tell the cook to cook something in a specific way. In this case it was to put her tempura shrimp into the sushi as quickly as possible, because the warmth of the tempura accentuates the other ingredients of the sushi. :::sigh::: The waitress was very kind. She explained the the tempura was very fresh, finally saying that she would tell the chef what my friend was asking. I found our order to be very, very good. I had a tempura-fried Golden California roll that was tasty. My "Oh My" roll was also very tasty, with textural differences between the various cuts and various fish. My friend found nothing at all wrong with the sushi, very high praise, indeed! In fact, she said that now she had a new sushi restaurant and that she would be back (poor Rumble Fish!). :Laugh: The service was not only kind, but just the right tenor... there, but not overly obsequious. The sushi chefs were friendly with their greetings and goodbyes. They seemed to have a large selection of sakis and if I didn't have to drive over the mountain, I would have had some that happy juice in the wooden cups they displayed. The cost of four rolls, three sodas came to about forty bucks, without tip. The rolls would be considered prime sushi anywhere. Overall, I was very happy with my experience here at Rumble Fish. My first time eating at Rumble Fish was a fantastic experience. To start off the staff was very friendly to me and my group. We were seated promptly and our servers were eager to assist us. When I looked at the menu they had an outstanding list of sushi which is ultimately what I ordered. What separates Rumble Fish from other sushi establishments is how they throw and artistic spin on the presentation of their sushi. The roll I ended up buying was named the caterpillar roll which when placed on the serving plate looked like a crawling caterpillar. They used avocado on top of the rolls to create the green back and used vegetables to make features on the body. The majority of their rolls are finely decorated. They have your basic Japanese food appetizers and entrees which are a staple at most restaurants. They have a great bento box that comes with your choice of two entrees. The interior of the restaurant was very clean which is always a plus. The one thing that I disliked about the establishment is the decorations were not too Japanese. I always like going to restaurants that have the Japanese feel. All in all this is a fantastic Japanese food restaurant and you should definitely give it a shot. read more

Tonight, I was starving and wanted my food fast, so I didn't bother messing with rolls and just ordered sashimi. The good news? We were seated quickly and ordered within 5 minutes. My sashimi order came really fast. The bad news? The Tuna wasn't great, nor the salmon. The only fish that was passable on my plate was the yellow tail. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, which never came, and I forgot all about it, leaving without getting it. To add insult to injury, I was charged for it too. We had to ask for water twice... I came here after being referred to it by one of my bosses. Knowing that I am a sushi fanatic, he told me that his gf's favorite roll is the Lion King roll.. WHOA ME TOO! Except my favorite place to get a Lion King roll is at Smile Sushi in San Jose. So he told me to check out Rumble Fish because it was her favorite place to order Lion King rolls and see how comparable it was to Smile. When we got there, we were greeted by the owners who were standing outside. We told them we were from San Jose and that it was our first time here, so when they sat us, they comped us with a mussels appetizer!! It was totally fresh and delicious! For sushi, we ordered the Oh Yes! roll, the Lion King roll, the Jalapeno roll, and another roll that was California roll with baked scallops on top (i forgot the name) and a spicy tuna roll. The baked scallops roll was AMAZING!! Everything was really good but I realized that there was a huge difference in Smile rolls and Rumble Fish rolls. First, the Lion King roll at Rumble FIsh is baked all the way through so the salmon is fully cooked. At Smile, it's baked but not completely so it still has a raw texture when you bite into it. Also, Rumble Fish uses cooked spicy tuna instead of the raw fish mixed with spicy mayo. I personally like the raw fish better! So that's why I had to give Rumble Fish a 4 star review. Yes, "I'm a fan!" but Smile is still "As good as it gets!" for me... as far as food goes. The service at Rumble Fish is totally personable though. They also comped our dessert so we are DEFINITELY coming back to support their business. I also like the atmosphere because it feels like I am eating dinner in someone's house. The restaurant is brightly lit and the building is actually like a house than a business/restaurant space. The only thing to beware is that some of the servers don't speak english well so it's helpful to enunciate your order and point to pictures...
