Since my friend found out that she has family from Barbados, she's become the "Soca" queen and a Caribbean food enthusiast..lol! That said, Rumhouse has become her favorite restaurant. She was excited to introduce me to a new restaurant since she CLAIMS I always pick..smh! I love Annapolis so checking out Rumhouse was a win for her and a win for me! So Rumhouse is just that, a converted house with several dining tables and a small bar. It sort of reminds me of a smaller "Prime 112" in Southbeach, for those who've been. Definitely not as fancy as Prime 112, but Rumhouse has "Island" charm for sure! The food is pricey but GOOOOD! My favorites were the giant prawns, crab cake appetizer and the lamb chops. They make one hell of a Caipirnanha, which just so happens to be my all time favorite cocktail. Service was impeccable! The owners are a married couple, who just so happen to be an Oral Surgeon and OB/Gyn respectively. The male half was there the evening we came and stopped by to say hello. Rumhouse is an authentic Caribbean restaurant featuring a Trinidadian Chef. I came during restaurant week and they had an amazing lineup of their most popular dishes. We started off with their bread sampler. It was a combination of various pastries including sweet and savory. Every single one was delicious!!! We had house made butter which was complimented the delicious bread nicely. My curry chicken and rice dish was amazing! Best curry I've tasted yet. Rich and authentic. We ordered rum cake and coconut ice cream for dessert. They were so delicious. The cake had a fresh, made with love taste. I love that they used a quality rum. My boyfriend enjoyed his saltfish entree as well! Our cocktails were amazing! Bartender was friendly. Drinks were strong And had amazing presentation. -Customer service was 10000/10. From the host to our server, to the bartender everyone was super hospitable. I love the concept of this restaurant and the overall experience I had! The tip is included in the pricing, which is a really nice touch. What you see is what you pay. The service was impeccable--- I felt welcomed and attended to by everyone I came in contact with. The bartenders were knowledgeable and created unique and great tasting drinks. The decor and vibe of the place was cozy and nicely done. As for the food, it was lot different than what I would aspect from a traditional Caribbean restaurant. Mother's Day was celebrated at Rumhouse and it was a really nice time. They serve a brunch menu on Sunday so please look at my picture of the menu. I love the restaurants decor and quaintness. The tropical wallpaper was everything and the all pink bathroom was so cute. The soca music playing was a delightful bonus. I ordered the monkey bread with Dubai chocolate, an Old Athens cocktail and the shrimp and grits. My daughter had the Trini plate which consists of stewed chicken, macaroni pie and calaloo. Her Trini plate was really good and tasted authentically Caribbean. I was married to a Trinidadian so I know. I enjoyed the overall taste of my shrimp and grits. I actually may start using polenta like them to make mine at home. The one thing I will say is that it could if had 1-2 more shrimp. It comes with four and there was so much polenta left it needed more shrimp. My cocktail was the truth and I loved the lemon balm in it. A friend put me onto this spot, so I decided to check it out. Let's start with the good: the service was excellent; our server was friendly, patient, and happy to answer all my questions. The space itself is small but super cozy, which I liked. Oh and I enjoyed my cocktail which was a warm spiced rum drink. Now...the reason I came because I was really looking forward to the oxtail croquettes, only to find out they're not available during brunch . You can tell they put a lot of thought into creating a vibe that feels like vacation. The service? A thousand out of ten. Every staff member we encountered was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. It's rare to feel so well taken care of from start to finish. Now let's talk food. The oxtail croquettes and the doubles are an absolute must-have--packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and a great way to kick off the meal. And if you have a sweet tooth, do not leave without trying the rum bread pudding. It was rich, indulgent, and full of that warm, spiced rum flavor that ties everything together beautifully. Rumhouse is a small and beautiful house restaurant in Eastport, right over the bridge from Downtown Annapolis. The menu features unique Caribbean/Jamaican dishes with "flare". The service was very good, and the atmosphere is chill and eloquent but at the same time lively. They stay busy as patrons go in and out, it's a great place to people watch and have a drink or two, and hang out with friends or a date night. Overall the food was above average but not out of this world, that was my disappointment. Especially with the prices, it's not cheap. The drinks were B- and for that it's worth another visit to try another drink but choose wisely because like the food the drink are beyond overpriced. The bread pudding is made to order which is cool, I didn't have the rum cake but my friends did and loved it. Will I go back. Hmm...yeah they deserve one more try and maybe an updated review but we shall see. For now this is definitely a generous three star establishment. The cocktails were creative and well balanced. My favorite was the Madame Coco - so smooth! I loved the Chicken Roti and my husband had the West Indian Shrimp with coconut grits (shrimp were well seasoned but grits were bland on their own - they are obviously meant to be eaten together, but just an observation). For my husband's birthday , I took him here as he is from Trinidad as we were looking for Caribbean vibes! First, it's more of a Caribbean-inspired restaurant. I loved how it felt like dining in a lively house buzzing with energy. While waiting for our indoor table, we enjoyed amazing cocktails at the bar, and since the weather was beautiful, For drinks, we tried the Rumhouse Punch, Golden Mojito, and The Confidante, followed by appetizers of Island Ceviche and Doubles. For entrées, we had the Trini Pelau and Signature Escovitch, and we ended the meal with Coco's Rum Cake for dessert. I had such high hopes for this new local joint, especially in a town that's been starved of creativity and cultural diversity in its dining scene. First, there were many aspects of our service that felt clunky and uninvested, including a sizeable wait upon arriving on time for our reservation, drinks dropping after food, and a lack of knowledge around many menu items. The menu is staggeringly overpriced, especially in the context of how small portions are. The Doubles were the biggest let down. I crave this delicious Indo-Trinidadian dish of pillowy soft bara (flatbreads) ladled full of chana and various chutneys. I was shocked to see the amount of food that landed on the table for $18 -- two thin, deflated almost crepe-like pancakes, lacking that elasticity, slight rise, and softness to sop up the accompanying curry. And as for that curry and the chutney, they barely filled 1/3 of the ramekins that carried them. All of the above was noticeably under seasoned. Look at the size of these Oxtail Croquettes with Microgreen Salad for $24....... Our server explicitly stated that the "Signature" Escovitch ($48) came without its head, which wouldn't have mattered either way to us--there's a lot of yummy tender meat in a fish head. But! What landed on the table was snapper with the head and the head was what composed most of the plate. The belly meat was meager, and had almost disintegrated because the entire thing was overfried, leaching all that flavor from such a delicate fish. The Trini Pelau for Two ($46) was the only saving grace and I'd like to commend the cooking of its protein. The chunks of chicken and beef in rice were tender and fall-apart. But the dish was nowhere near enough food for two people, and it lacked salt and depth. Furthermore, the pigeon peas were incredibly mushy. To find a half-ring of canned pineapple on the Chef's Side Salad ($16???) was the thing that sunk my heart the most. In theory, a restaurant touting traditional and creative takes on Caribbean cuisine is so sorely needed in this town especially since so many restaurants that boast something similar have menus that are pretty white-washed. But the price point Rumhouse currently sits makes it inaccessible for most Annapolitans. And our experience of a menu that didn't achieve the nuanced flavor and texture-, acid-, and heat-diversity these regional cuisines are known for shows there's a lot of room for this restaurant to grow into itself. read more

We came to celebrate our anniversary on the first celebration of National Rum Day. My husband and I are both of Caribbean descent, so we were really looking forward to this. The ambience was absolutely on point--we felt like we were on vacation while out to eat. We were relaxed and enjoyed the complimentary cocktail provided. Since this was a special event, all tables were chef's tables. Because I don't eat beef or pork, they were wonderful about substituting what I couldn't eat. My husband even said he enjoyed my dishes more! I can understand why some people might say the food wasn't strongly Caribbean-inspired, but that doesn't mean it wasn't delicious. We especially loved the lamb and the prawns. I was hoping for the kick of scotch bonnet pepper in the ceviche, but that dish was a little disappointing since I expected more heat. We also tried the flights, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were full cocktails--each one was delicious. As for the pricing, the website clearly states that they price their menu to pay employees a livable wage with benefits. Honestly I wanna come back! Rumhouse marketing on IG definitely hooked me in. The aesthetics are superior, the decor, the staff are top notch, and the wait time with our reservation was next to nothing. We were pleasantly greeted at the host stand, Richard made sure we had adequate seating after realizing we had one more person than stated in our reservation, and our server (Theresa?...she had red hair) was more than accommodating with recommendations, her patience with a group of 7, and just overall very pleasant! Food, is on the higher end than my usual outings. But everything I tasted was delicious. I had the lamb chops which were great. The dipping sauce was a bit spicy I felt like it took away the other flavors so I opted out after one taste. It was supposed to be served with some radishes (featured in pictures on the website and Instagram). but sadly no radishes for me. For the price paid...I want everything that is supposed to come with it. The gumbo was ok, but I'm quite picky when it comes to Cajun/creole dishes (as a Louisiana girl, I know good gumbo.) I loved the okra garnish on top. The portion size felt a little more like an appetizer than an entree something to keep in mind when gaging your hungry meter! The crab cake... HANDS DOWN THE BEST I HAVE HAD IN MARYLAND. We honestly should've ordered a one for each person at the table. So delish!!!! The oxtail croquettes were another delightful appetizer but sadly they ran out and we were only able to enjoy 1 of the 2 that were ordered. They also ran out of other dishes, i.e., oxtail pasta and the crab dumplings. So although the lamb wasn't my first choice. I did enjoy it. The drinks were also stellar! I love the featured rum flights as well! I can tell that a lot of thought and planning went into every part of Rumhouse. We only went for brunch- on Sundays it closes at 3 and only serves brunch. Any restaurant called Rumhouse you would expect nothing less than delicious and very different for the price but strong drinks. I cannot say as much for the brunch food while tasty the saltfish was good, but it was in a ramekin around 6 ounces total of chopped salt fish with other ingredients. Saltfish & Coconut Bake Salted Cod and Fluffy Coconut Bread - $24 - My husbands Caribbean burger, well I will say (the breads are homemade in House.) the burger bread was way larger than the actual burger the burger resembled a hockey puck (at least his did.) It was cooked medium which my husband liked. The menu bragged there was chowchow served with it and caramelized onions and goat cheese however none of it was barely noticeable on the burger if at all. So that was super disappointing. The sweet potato fries were good, but not substantial sized cut sweet potato fries, more on the smaller cut size. So they definitely missed the mark on tasting the sweet potato flavor being cut small and super thin. Discovered a new restaurant in Maryland that is worthy of recognition. There is nothing like authentic food from authentic restauranteurs. Nestled in Annapolis is this Caribbean gem of mixed Jamaican and Trinidadian cuisine. The restaurant has a beautiful aesthetic of vibrant colors and table setting which is reminiscent of the Caribbean. It appears as though they restored an older 2 story home into a restaurant with a veranda, outside patio/porch in the back with a fire pit, an inside is small with single tables, a chef's table and an outside patio with tables. Creative and colorful dishes that are native to the two islands and let's not forget the alcoholic cocktails and nonalcoholic mocktails. In all transparency, I visited the restaurant on two occasions due to the initial visit being unfavorable. Initial visit with a friend and we both ordered the same food items. Although the service was okay, it was not polished nor was the server able to fluently speak about the menu. The highlight of the first visit was the Golden mojito and the Chef's salad. The entrees charred Cauliflower steak took a long time to come and arrived cool, hence it was sitting a long time before serving. When we informed the server, we were advised we would get a new dish not warmed. And when the dishes returned it was clear they were reheated, as the portions we had eaten from were visible. We informed the owner's son who listened but his response was disappointing. I asked for a to go Cauliflower steak and my friend declined. The next day I ate the take out which was flavorful and an 8-9/10. Given that, my spouse and I made a reservation 3 weeks later to give the restaurant a second chance. This time they didn't disappoint. I had the coconut callaloo soup and peas & rice and my spouse had the charred cauliflower steak. All were well seasoned, flavorful and delicious. The server was well informed, provided good recommendations and was able to provide information about all of our inquiries and was polished with his attire and presentation. I am glad I gave the restaurant a 2nd chance and have even made recommendations to friends. read more

If 4.5 stars was an option, that's what I rate Rumhouse! The ambiance and restaurant design is stunning. You definitely feel transported to the islands. It is stunning inside this restaurant. My one detractor was the service. Our waitress was new, so she was unfamiliar with what some of the ingredients were in the dishes, and she would forget smalls things we asked for like refills and napkins. I think she was a little overwhelmed by her tables, but you could definitely tell that the rest of the team was rallying around trying to help her out. The bartenders were amazing!!! The mojito menu is unmatched. The mocktail menu is also incredibly unique--you are definitely not being up charged for fancy juice, which is what I feel like a lot of mocktail menus are. Now to the best part--the food! I could have closed my eyes and blindly picked anything on the menu and be delighted. I feel like a lot of people use the term Caribbean cuisine or Caribbean restaurant, but don't truly embody the authenticity in their ingredients or presentation. They were very attentive and our orders came out in a timely manner and they were still steaming.. The ambience reminded me of an old wooden home back home in the islands that was renovated and turned into an island restaurant. The owner was able to find a great location and replicate that.. The drinks you could tell that when they said an alcoholic beverage using ingredients such as sorrel I was taken aback that they actually used sorrel. The food didn't skip a beat for me again this was just the brunch menu. I do now from this experience. Want to even more indulge in their dinner menu. If you haven't found yourself dining at Rumhouse as of yet then you need to get there because you're certainly missing out. My table ordered the lamb rack, it was rare/raw inside and burnt on the outside. I was not asked how I'd like the lamb cooked. The snapper batter wasn't cooked in the middle and the gumbo was burnt. We didn't receive one of the sides we ordered, but was charged for it and did not receive a refund because "it was too difficult to process". The portions were extremely small compared to the pricing and taste and I've dined at a few Michelin star restaurants before. 3 out of 4 entrees being inedible is unacceptable. 3 appetizers, 1 entree and 6 drinks at $300 is ridiculous. I like the fact that it was an effortless process, some restaurants are pretty strict on reservation changes. Brunch was good, drinks were great and service was phenomenal. The host was energetic and very engaging with patrons and Sophie our server was amazing. Sophie handled all eight of us with no problem. Let me begin by pointing out that a tip is INCLUDED in the pricing, a practice I admire as it insures staff is properly compensated at all times! Now on to the restaurant... It is beautiful and delightful to experience the moment you walk in the door. It has a low key tropical vibe reflecting sophisticated and refined taste. The many interesting drinks are delicious and well made. Outstanding flavors and portions.. The food was excellent, full of flavor, fresh, and attractively presented. The service was friendly, attentive, and timely. I had Jerk lamb with a chefs salad, the lamb was cooked just right, spicy with a touch of heat; and the salad was fresh and slightly sweet, a perfect foil to the spicy lamb. My wife has crab dumplings in a cream sauce. She loved it. For desert we shared a passion fruit creme brûlée, also excellent, and I had rum cake, full of flavor but dry, a day or two past its peak freshness. One of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had. Our group tried every cocktail on the menu - and they were all amazing. Not an exaggeration, the three of us each had three cocktails and we sampled each-others - and they were so good. For appetizers and mains we did the same, all sharing food family style and it was outstanding. The scallops, the dumplings, the lamb, etc. We also had two desserts and they were so good. But let me tell you, the quality of the service was what really stood out. Every individual was so nice, so friendly - yet still completely professional. Their timing and pacing was perfect. They explained everything just enough. A perfect balance of presence - and they were all such great people. The ambiance was wonderful, the place is beautiful and very nicely done. The dining room was fantastic and the patio is comfortable and quite pleasant. The prices are not super out of line for the area, and portions are what you would expect from fine dining - but given the quality and value we felt it was absolutely worth every penny. Even the bathrooms felt special. We are so glad we walked across the bridge and tried this place out, it was the highlight of our visit to Annapolis. Looking at some of the other low scoring reviews, I am not sure what is up with those people. The tipping policy is clearly communicated, I saw it right away? It's not the restaurants fault if you're not paying attention. Our server did ask us how we wanted the lamb cooked, and they prepared it perfectly. Our reservation was made only 30 minutes prior to our arrival, and they seated us quickly with no concerns. In fact - the party in front of us had a problem with their reservation and the restaurant still took care of them figuring out a solution - and the staff was super accommodating and friendly for them. The flavors were sometime bold and sometimes subtle. We have frequented many Caribbean restaurants - both domestically and in the actual Caribbean - and I feel this places cuisine was brilliant. As I walked in I saw a beautifully decorated restaurant. We were a party of 7 who had made a reservation a week earlier and now we're sitting outside in the cold. Escorted by the host, we were told a few minutes. 45 min in the cold later, we were seated. The Price fix menu had lobster bisque which caused me eye strain. The strain comes from trying to find one little piece of lobster. None! And it was cold! Then dinner was served very staggered to 7. So we waited and food wasn't hot. Person next to me had rockfish and it was so burned it was sent back. Overall, the taste of the food was fabulous but the temps and service was very poor. I waited over a week to write this in order to check with others who had gone for dinner there. All had similar experiences, so that's why I posted this review.
