My son loves trains and anything train related so we came to Brownwood and hit the train museum and this place. The kids loved it and the food was good. The blue cheese burger was a exactly what it was supposed to be and the amount of blue cheese was just right. My daughter actually ordered the RR club and I benefitted from the bacon that was a little too spicy for her. I loved it. She loved the rest of it including the bread that has a little kick to it as well. The clam chowder was great, especially considering the proximity to a source of fresh seafood. I absolutely adore this place. It's awesome eating inside of a train and the food is delicious. The shakes are made with blue bell ice cream, so they're all pretty delicious. I've never had a bad experience with the Train and the servers are all nice. I recommend sharing because the burgers are huge! read more

Burgers were good..packed as sardines...reminds me of 59 diner in Houston..next best burger joint away from home. Their root beer float was good...felt like a kid again. The runaway train is a nice little retreat in Brownwood, TX, however this small train-car restaurant only seats around 30-50 people at a time and is a little cramped, so if you're planning on going durning the lunch rush then don't expect a five-star dining experience. For what they have and the prices that they offer this is a pretty middle-of-the-road place to stop, that is more about the decor and atmosphere than the food they serve. The people of Brownwood take a lot of pride in what they have, and it defiantly shows in this little hole in the wall, and if you're looking for a quick place to stop and eat as you pass through the town, I'd say this is one of your top ten choices. read more

Great little burger joint, perfect for lunch. Better get there early or you will be waiting for a place to sit. Service is excellent, but being how it is a real train car, it can be cramped for space. Try the BLT with the jalapeño bacon. It is awesome!!! This place is great!! When we arrived servers greeted us with an open door and a warm welcome. We sat down and the waitress took our drink order immediately. The service was excellent!! It has a diner feel in a really cool train car. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a chili cheese burger and both were fantastic. They were large burgers, the fries were delicious as well as the tater tots. The sweet tea was perfect and the waitress quickly gave us refills as well as offered to send us with a to-go drink. Definitely our go-to restaurant when we visit Brownwood. When we lived in Brownwood we were here once maybe 2-3times that week. My niece loved it and loved her spot at the bar top. Burgers were always consistent and their fries were nicely done. I preferred to add bleu Cleese to my burger. My wife would frequently order the BLT and by no means was it lite. The owner is extremely approachable and very friendly. We never had an issue but I'm confident she would quickly resolve any issue with patrons. Of course you cannot forget you're dining inside a train! It's got so much creativity in that alone! Great retro feel and great food. You can't go wrong. The Runaway Train is my favorite spot to eat in Brownwood! It's -- by far -- NOT the fanciest place but I love the cute ambience. There's an authentic vibe when you step in. Both the exterior and interior of the restaurant/diner are designed to make people feel like they're on a train. Cool, right? It's pretty small but still enough space for a get-together or group hangout. My go-to on the menu is the Railroad Club Wrap! &I like to substitute chips for fries. Yummm! Food is decently priced and the staff is sweet. It's the first place I'd recommend to peeps visiting Brownwood :) read more

We went to the Runaway Train for the first time today. The employees were so very nice and kept our drinks filled. I enjoyed the Philly cheese steak sandwich and my husband had the RR club. The Texas toothpicks were yummy as well. Had a great experience, will be going back again. read more
