I was in the area from across the state for work and stopped by here for dinner since my parents said they love this place and have been before. I ordered a grilled cheese and side salad, nothing fancy but it was good and I would get it again. I didn't order any desserts but they looked pretty good from the menu. The service was also very good and the younger women working here were nice and friendly. As for the ambiance, I can appreciate an older-style place and this is definitely one of them. It doesn't appear that it's ever been renovated but I quite honestly really appreciated that about it. Eating here reminded me of times when I was little and would go out to eat with my grandma. It gave me a nostalgic, homey feeling you could say. I would rather eat at a place like this than a modern day chain with plain/grey modern decor. So the home made jam(strawberry) is amazing along with the pork sausage patties ! My omelette was a little burnt but edible.. the service isnt the greatest the waitress never even came to drop off out bill we had to go to the front and the women looked it up for us. read more

I'm from out of town and this place was highly recommended. Decided to give it a try. Ordered my food and went back to my hotel. Food smelled delicious. Open the bag no utensils, no napkins. Open the container the butter that was inside the container were open and basically drenched my chicken. Cutlerville locale now has commercial GFS production food taste. It was our go-to when they used to have truly home cooked from scratch meals as advertised. I truly miss the "Old Russ's". Prices are still low, but so is the flavor. read more

Been coming for 15 years, a minute's walk from the Orchards next door. Not a bad item on the menu, although my favorite of favorites is the spinach with mushroom omelette. The pancakes and hash browns will compete with any of the other local restaurants around. All other foods, no matter what designation are beyond good, and the service is wonderful. This is essentially Big Boy. Same type of decor, same vibe, same type of menu. As an example, at Big Boy, they have the "Slim Jim" sandwich, while at Russ', they have the "Slim Gem". You have to give Russ' points for a blatant lack of creativity there. My wife preferred the Slim Jim over the Slim Gem, by the way, but I preferred the burger at Russ' over the burger at Big Boy. Lots of old folks here, and while some people don't like this, I find it reassuring that the people eating at the same restaurant as you are 100 years old. It can't be that bad for you, can it? Contrast that to some of these trendy spots with all the young hipsters, and you wonder where the old hipsters are. Did they simply mature and go to normal places, or did they infarct due to hideously clogged arteries? read more

Without thought, the absolute worst breakfast restaurant that I have ever eaten at. The waffle breakfast was without exaggeration exactly the same as the continental breakfast waffle machine at a Super 8 and it only came with one. I take that back, it was actually worse because the waffle batter was so whipped that it was like eating air. Other food orders were cold and missing items. The menu selection was very limited so you expected the food that they did serve to be good. I never imagined ever leaving a 1 star review when i wasn't treated rude or anything crazy happened but I have no control over this one, it's simply a 1 star restaurant. read more

Went here with friends, whose elderly parents chose the restaurant. The place looks trapped in 1970, and the food is Denny's style. Service was cheerful and attentive. I got the tilapia, which was light, very flavorful, and flaky. The side of mashed potatoes was super dried out, didn't even taste like potato, and were frankly inedible. The house applesauce was fantastic - chunky, not too sweet, and cinnamon flavored. My husband got his favorite, fried chicken, which was decent. His salad came from bagged lettuce with the inevitable wilt and smell. The "scalloped" potatoes were tasty, but were actually cheesy au gratin potatoes, not creamy escalloped - a common mistake in comfort food restaurants. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by Russ'. I grew up not really liking Russ' restaurants because it was always where we went with my grandma. However, we decided to try it and were pleasantly surprised. This is an old restaurant--definitely old but it was clean and the food/prices were good! Their homemade rolls are SO good. They melt in your mouth. When I ordered soup, I asked for a second one because they are so good. My husband likes their meatloaf and has ordered it both times. It is basic, good, homemade mid-west food. They don't try to make things fancy or anything--just good and homemade. Average prices were $5-$9. read more

This is the local chain. the place used to be jam packed all the time. you had to wait in line for a seat. now the quality is off and so have the number of people who eat there. you don't have any trouble getting a seat. sometimes you get good service and sometimes you don't. I've had good food and poor food. Once I complained to the manager. he wanted to pay for my meal and as I had already paid for it, there was nothing he could do for me. I was so mad. Horrible food and slow service. The staff was nice but that's about the only thing I can say good. I ordered eggs over medium and they were cooked hard all the way through. The second attempt wasn't an improvement. The pancake was so tough I had to cut it with a fork and knife. The food was just bland. As a rule, we try to avoid chains. But as we are not from this side of the state, we've never eaten at a Russ's, so decided to give it a try while passing through. Noticed a bunch of blue-hairs milling around outside when we pulled up. Normally this is a good sign of quality food, so we we're encouraged. Inside, Russ's apparently hadn't been redesigned since 1983, but was, however, spotless. Menu was pretty standard and we both chose to go with the Monterrey Chicken with California blend vegetables and cucumber salad sides. The chicken breasts served may have been the smallest pieces of chicken I've ever received at a restaurant. Pathetic. The flavor of the dish was mediocre. I had envisioned the cucumber salad to be similar to what my Italian grandmother makes. This was different- sweeter (not in a good way), and the cherry tomatoes we're rubbery.
