Dirty and run down. The food just wasn't good. The onion rings which they are supposed to be know for were awful. They weren't fully battered and they came out in a clumpy mess. Came here after spending the day at the beach! As far as atmosphere goes, the restaurant is nice and clean. Could use some work, just a little outdated, but I can't say it's a bad thing in my opinion! As far as the service goes, the staff were really friendly, helpful and efficient! Shannon is our friendly, experienced server (36 years at restaurant). She is the ONLY server at the moment. The restaurant isn't slammed with customers (18) with many tables available, but I would think another server would be appropriate. Half of the restaurant is closed off. I guess 200+ people could be seated in the entire restaurant. My wife and I ordered chicken tenders, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and fried mushroom appetizers. In the Grand Rapids area for a weekend getaway. We always eat at local spots. My boyfriend wanted to go to Russ' because it reminded him of a Big Boy. We walked in and the hostess was more concerned about talking to her friends than seating us. There was a lady from DoorDash waiting for food. She asked the hostess for an update and said nevermind, she was going to go. She stated she had been waiting forever. I ordered the potato skins and a cheeseburger. The potato skins were very soft (no crunch), with cheese, and bacon. The bacon was dumped on one skin only. They looked like someone made them at home and then heated them up in the microwave the next day. My cheeseburger came out with more bun than meat. It was by far the thinnest burger I've ever seen. Just looking at it, I wasn't sure I even wanted to take a bite. I did and it was so gross. It didn't taste done and there was so much pepper. I didn't finish it. There were a lot of tables that needed cleaned off. The restaurant inside and outside was just gross. I have no idea how places like this stay open. read more

The service was lovely when we visited! The food is exactly what you would expect of a little diner in the middle of the Midwest. We had a slice of pie that was almost too pretty to eat. The server was warm and friendly. Prices were great. I ordered the open face Turkey sandwich and was a little surprised when the Turkey was kind of shredded with the consistency of a tuna salad. Worst meal of my life. Got here at 8:05 and I just got my food at 9:05 and half of it was cold (my bacon and sausage) , my eggs were only warm and toast was the only thing close to hot. Everyone at my table had cold food besides the one person who's food they forgot to make, hence why it was hot for them. Bacon tasted like it had chemicals in it or something. This is a place that has really gone downhill. I walked in to find half of it closed off. The other dining room had 10 people dining at 1pm. Salad bar not set up. It was known for great homemade salads. I had a great welcoming server. I ordered hot turkey sandwich with gravy. After getting to the point of just walking out after waiting so long,it came out. This restaurant has been around longer than I have, and I am not addressing the fact they were short staffed and the food took longer than usual, that is concern for management. I am writing about their new gluten free bun, the Cloudie. What it lacks in appearance it more than makes up for by having no sugar, no carbs, and only 30 calories! This may appeal to anyone watching carbs and calories, not just those avoiding gluten. The taste was unique and great. Highly recommend to anyone avoiding gluten, carbs or calories. read more

Follow the Rules or Else! Upon arrival we were not greeted but were asked to "sign in" but could not because there was no sign in sheet or sign in. The "hostess" brought the clipboard and turned over the sign; all without apology. After signing in we were told twice to sit in the waiting area, apparently so we would not block traffic. Apparently we were not following the rules, again. This despite us making plenty of room for other customers to pass through and my observation that the dining room was half full. "We have to get our servers ready" was the explanation given by a man with a red beard who came from the back. Ready for what? Customers? Or is the rule here that the customer is served at the staff's convenience? Our server was a refreshing change; friendly, prompt and attentive. In summary; our impression from the front staff was that we were a burden. When I write the corporate office I intend to bring this to there attention. My wife grew up in the area, and though we've been together for almost four years, it wasn't till a visit this fall that I finally had my Russ' cherry popped. I had no idea what I was in store for, but left very satisfied! The menu has a great mix of standard diner dishes, sandwiches, and other local favorites. My wife loves the Slim Gem. I normally stick with the soup and salad bar...I mean come on, how can anyone pass up an endless supply of 7+ different homemade soups ?!!? I'm a big fan of the split pea. Best of all, the prices are cheap cheap cheap. If you're passing through town, be sure to stop by Russ' before you leave. You wont be disappointed. read more

It's been a while since I have been to this location but like many of their locations this Russ' offers a good meal at a family friendly price. Russ' has gone downhill, and fast. The fried chicken arrived completely undercooked. It was bloody and clearly raw inside. The manager came over and said 'sorry', but didn't offer to either a.) replace the meal or b.) take the meal off the bill. Lame. Incredibly lame. Told the guy I wouldn't be back and he shrugged. lol. A few years ago the onion rings, the best since Mr. Fables was around, were fantastic. Now? Yuck. It's the classic problem of simply being cheap and not changing the oil often enough. They've got that nasty, bitter and sour aftertaste that lingers on your tongue for hours as the result of way too many fry batches. Awful. Not in Holland normally but had to get my grandma some soup for her sore throat. Kody the manager was SO nice and helped us at the drive-through. He got us a big quart of chicken and rice soup for gma and a kids meal for my toddler. Out in minutes. Just was really refreshing to have a smiling face greet us and take time to get our order right and to us quick. Thankful to have people like him still around in the service industry. We were there for lunch and all 3 of our meals were excellent. Their onion rings were to die for and menu sauce large order was shareable and was plenty for 3 adults and only 5.99. Two of us had burgers and couldn't quit talking about the buttery , delicious buns, which were for sale in 8 pack in lobby. I had clams which are hard to find on menus lately. Stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting Saugatuck and ventured up to Holland. When we walked in we were told we could sit anywhere. We did not know that one side was self service and order by phone and the other side was full service. It would have been nice to have this explained to us in the beginning. We did not even notice the phone at the table and sat there waiting, and waiting for a waitress to come over. LOL eventually we had to ask what was up? So once we ordered our food it was quick and the food was decent. My biggest gripe is that the ice tea was not fresh brewed. I detest instant ice tea. Would I came back? Only if my car ran out of gas in front of the place and I could not hail a cab. If you like Big Boy restaurants you will love it here. read more

Stay away from this Russ's ! Went there for dinner tonight and discovered that this restaruant needs some SERIOUS NEW MANAGEMENT. Without a doubt, this was the worst Russ's I have ever seen! I used to live in this area of West Michigan, and have some fond memories of eating some good food at good prices at Russ's. This location ruined that entire memory forever. It was very dirty, the staff was completly disorganized and not attentive. There were many tables with food and dirty plates just sitting there during our entire meal. It was not that busy, with only 5 -6 groups of diners in the entire section I was sitting in. People who came in after us got all there food before us, but no utensils to eat it with. People who were there before us did not get anything until we were half done. We got our food in reverse order! It was a mess from start to finish. Went up to the front to pay and not one person was in sight! waited for quite some and was considering just walking out but finally someone showed up to take our money. I could fault a server or a cook, but in my opinion this place had a much more basic problem of incompetence at the management level. No way could all the individual people be so bad. read more

I've been going to Russ' as long as I can remember. After seeing some of the other reviews, I think that it is quite right to say that they have a lot of good old-fashioned diner food. Their desserts have always been very good, especially the pies and the shakes. I'm also a fan of their side dishes; the gravy that comes with their potatoes is very tasty. My best recommendation, however, is the soup bar. Russ' has excellent soups, and the soup bar has all of those plus baked potatoes and salad. It's a very good deal. Admittedly, this isn't really a fine restaurant, so the food quality might not be as high as some other places. However, the dishes are delicious and the prices are low. It's too bad it doesn't seem like the chain has been doing too well the last few years. read more

We ordered valentine special, prime rib and a couple shrimp. Waited a long time. I don't expect fast food speed at a sit down cafe. The meat was brought out cold. The veggies were hot. I told the server about the cold meat, she spoke to the cook and manager who assured her prime rib is ALWAYS SERVED COLD !! I assured her not so. Even the au jus was cold. We were give the option for a long wait or heaven forbid...they would microwave meat. We couldn't eat the cold meat, so took it home to the dogs. You get what you pay for. read more

Joe and I went to Tulip Festival on Tuesday and had a long day. Some of tulips were nipped by frost. We enjoyed the trolley ride though. The guide told us to try Russ's Restaurant. You sat at a booth and after looking at menu to decide what you wanted, you picked up a phone to give them your whole order. Only problem was, nobody answered; so we left. We ate at Hibachi Sushi Bar in Kalamazoo. It is always good. read more
