Very nice & clean upon entering. The mushrooms are amazing. The grilled chicken salad was just lettuce, tomatoes, cheese & chicken. It wasn't a large salad for 14.00 and was just ok. The lite perch was undercooked - was wet not crisp. The perch was not fishy tasting at all and there were three pieces along with 2 sides. I had fries which were hot & crisp and a side salad. The side salad was ample size. The loaf of bread was excellent and came warm. Our server was good & personable as we're all the employees. Not sure about a return trip as it wasn't impressive enough to leave us excited to go back. read more

My son and I go here for lunch every Friday. :) Plain down home food, but always good. The waitresses are friendly and real, one of the reasons we keep going back. :) It is a cabin theme, so a lot of guys meet there for lunch. My son likes the classic cheeseburger and fries, or the Applewood bacon swiss burger. I like the cranberry chicken salad plate with fresh fruit or the salmon. Since we moved to this side of the state two months ago we are sampling food from various restaurants. Friday is fish fry day. So we tried the perch dinner yesterday. And yes - it was good. The best way to describe this place is a Lodge. You very much get the feeling of being in a lodge/cabin. All in all though a very warm feeling. I ordered the Ribs ($15), with it I ordered a dinner salad and BBQ Smokehouse Fries. The ribs were very good and tender, with a nice bbq sauce. The dinner salad was one of the best I've had in a while. The BBQ fries were very good, especially when hot. There was also a small loaf of quick bread, that was fresh and hot. I prefer yeasty bread, but this was good. The person I was with ordered the Whitefish ($14), with a dinner salad and fries. It was stated to be excellent and a good portion. Sides were also excellent. The service was very professional, quick, and friendly. Overall an easy 5 star review! Would I return? Absolutely! I loved the atmosphere and the food. Wow! Almost perfect breakfast! Excellently prepared and great service! The bacon was just perfection! Flat and crispy, just right. American fries with sautéed onions where great, deep fried perfect! The pancakes where some of the best I have had! Light and fluffy with excellent taste and texture! I had scrambled eggs, third one is free. They were done about as well as you can on a griddle. This is a smallish, maybe "quaint" is a better word, family diner. It's decor is pretty much Michigan Upper Peninsula cottage. Everything (literally) is made of knotty pine and it's pretty rustic looking. Fishing and hunting stuff on the walls, snow shoes, etc. The service was attentive and friendly and the food was pretty good. I am giving it 4 stars based on comparing it to similar restaurants and not fine dining establishments. The menu is interesting. They have the typical stuff you would expect like burgers and such but they don't have other things that would seem a given like chicken wings for example. They did have fried smelt and sweet potato fries. I was pretty surprised because you don't find smelt just anywhere around these parts. The food is good, but not great. Prices are average. Lots of choices including fish (Perch, Whitefish). I got the grilled Whitefish and it needed the Tartar sauce. Not much flavor without it unfortunately. Their homemade bread is very good. The beer was cold and refreshing. Surprisingly they have no desserts. Zero. Nada. As a businessman, I find this curious as desserts can add significantly to the bottom line. Go figure. read more

James Street Inn is a bit of a hidden gem off the beaten path... you don't particularly run into it ... but if you go you won't be disappointed =) I've been a few times over the past year and I always enjoy my experience there. They have what you typically would find at a typical Michigan country restaurant.. a variety of beef and fish entres, well built sandwiches, juicy burgers, elaborate salads, fried food, etc ... but their portions are very generous and they're savory with good home-cooked flavor =) What I really enjoy is the Whitefish and Perch, good batter, served hot right out of the fryer, and they're not afraid to bring me as many lemons as I need for my two orders I've gotten in one sitting when I've been really hungry =) The staff is super friendly and the place is clean. What I haven't enjoyed is the steamed cauliflower as a side... too soggy and overcooked ... but other than that, this place is a win, particularly also because their prices are very very fair!.. My husband and I have eaten here twice and really enjoyed it both times. I read the guys post about old people being there and I find that very untrue and offensive. No there aren't a bunch of twenty somethings hanging out here but you will find mostly families and couples like us in their 40's to couples in their 70's. It is a place for everyone (except 20 somethings looking for a pub). As for the food it has been perfect both times. The first time we enjoyed the Traverse City salad and Cobb Salad for our late lunch. Tonight was the BBQ rib and chicken combo with baked beans and slaw. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious. The chicken was so moist and flavorful. I can't even complain about the beans or slaw. We should have seen it coming but at 40+ years of age we were the youngest in the place at 5PM. The food was average at best. I had a salad to start that was not fresh. My wife enjoyed her taco salad which was very large and filled with goodies. She said the salsa type dressing was good. I had the bison burger. This meat is similar to 94-6 ground beef or better. We went for breakfast, it was average diner food, which was priced fairly for what you got. Fresh hot coffee which is all I usually require but this was very weak brew, enough so that my wife who likes very mild coffee commented on how weak it was. Service was fast but entirely perfunctory. If you are nearby and want some reasonably priced diner food it is an okay option, particularly if you aren't a coffee drinker. It's always really busy when we drive past the restaurant so we wanted to see what all the hype was about. The atmosphere was cozy and every table was filled with customers. Even though they were extremely business, the service was great! Our waitress was very prompt with drinks and to take our orders! She was good about checking to make sure we had everything we needed.
