Hands down two thumbs up micro-brews, grub, hospitality, indoor/outdoor seating and live music by solo vocalist playing electric guitar and fiddle this Wednesday night! Visiting the Island first time, our Parksville friends raked us over to this brew pub. Springford farm pastures are adjacent to the pub. We passed by to see 2 very extra large bull steers out front. Some beef from Springford pastures made it onto my plate. I'm thankful for this burger and homemade chips along with a couple Angler IPA's with wife and friend. Good times, food and libations! I'm sorry to say but this place has lost its appeal. The food is highly overpriced and the service is just average. A very average pasta special is just ordinary and comes in at the same price as the best Italian restaurant in Victoria. The bowls, which used to be good has more greens in them then ever and is closer to a salad. The burgers are no better than Papa's or Rod and Gun and twice as much. Note to owner: when you add crap food like chips into a burger it doesn't improve it. It makes it cheap and childish. The burnt ends or mostly dry and over cooked. The quality is just at a par rating. If you really want a similar fair go to the Cedar and Fern in Qualicum. Their brisket on a fried rice patty is incredible. That's what good food taste like. The burnt ends are their signature dish at Rusted Rake but they're not supposed to be literally burnt and dry, Some moisture would be appreciated. I wouldn't say a not to go here but no would say you won't be happy spending the dollars you did not will you be thrilled with the food. read more

Super happy we pulled off here on our way through Nanoose Bay. It was snowing but the warmth of the fire place and farmhouse decor was perfected with the snowy backdrop. I might have to move here solely because of how amazing this brewery is!! Ok ok maybe there's many other reasons to love the island but being from the mainland, we are spoiled with great breweries. The thing is, it's rare to find a brewery where the same time and attention that is provided by the brewmaster, is also given by the chef and kitchen staff. We tried the chowder (pictured is the small portion), burger, brisket dip, and kids pasta. All were worth the 5 stars. My ultimate favourite were the house made pickles. Didn't notice if these are for sale in their little merch store but I'll be checking when I made it back sometime. read more

The 5 stars is because it is cool and only been open 6 weeks so it's doing a great job. Sitting inside and sitting outside are 2 completely different experiences. Outside, you can smell the barley growing and get a real feel for sense of place and intention. Inside is nice and airy but you could be anywhere. The beer was good. The food is really good!! Everything is really fresh and prepared with attention. Meals out are so expensive these days and we were surprised that the bill was not higher. It was nice to go someplace and not have crazy pricing. All of the staff were really friendly without being overbearing; And that is impressive because it was quite busy. We were visiting from the mainland and decided to try this place. Upon arriving, we noticed a lineup and knew that had to be a good sign. Wow, we were blown away. This place is great. Delicious food, attentive service, beautiful view. We sat on the patio, where let me tell you the best part...dogs are welcome. The must try is the chowder. Fresh muscles, class, lox and scallop. It could have been a meal in itself, but I'm glad I left room for their feature of the day. The Arctic Char. Hands down the best meal I've had in probably 10 years. Located just off the highway, this is a hidden local favorite. We arrived about 5 minutes after opening and the parking lot was already over half-full and after our experience we totally got it. I had the Wandering Scotsman's Spruce Tip IPA that was so unique and tasty. My wife had Rosa the Rebel Mexican Lager which was absolutely wonderful. Farm to Tap is the motto here as they grow their own barley for the beer they brew. Chose this spot for dining today, not drinking, so I can't comment on those. Quality clearly means a lot here as evidenced in the preparation of our dinner of seafood chowder, brisket dip and small Caesar salad. Chowder and it's accompanying focaccia (surprisingly sweet) held a bounty of fresh seafood including clams and mussels in the shell, an excellent scallop, both hard and cold smoked salmon in a heavily dilled cream stew. An excellent choice as it can be a meal on its own. Brisket dip was served hamburger style with cheese. Not very smoky, it was still nicely cooked with some crusty bits. The au jus was saltier than most so less was more. Caesar salad wasn't your typical romaine salad. Instead, it was a mix of arugula, baby kale and some other types of lettuce, heavily covered with a zesty lemony dressing, plus crispy bacon chunks. My family and I went here during our visit to the island. Three stars for the food, it is delicious. The space is also well decorated, and the staff was good. I can't recommend a visit though, due to the management. I don't know if she's the manager or the owner, but we saw her talking down to patrons, shaking her head at people, and being really passive aggressive. Had lunch here on Saturday, Sept 17th. Parking lot was packed when we arrived so were expecting a wait, but got seated right away. We both had the seafood chowder - excellent! Creamy, rich and full of seafood - mussels, clams, shrimp, perfectly grilled scallop and a large piece of smoked salmon. Served with a piece of grilled bread. A bowl was more than plenty for lunch.
