Pleasantly surprised with the taste, quality, and value at the Rusty Nail! Ate there twice in three days to try a couple of different options. First night was a family pizza night. Ordered a couple of large pizzas and overall it was really good. The dough was a bit tough...thinking it was just overcooked that night, but it got more tender the next day and had it warmed up. The cheese and toppings (sausage and mushrooms that night) were great! Super juicy and nice sauce too. Came back a couple nights later for their Friday fish fry! It was amazing! Had a choice of haddock or perch, hand-battered or baked. Potato pancakes or fries as another side choice. The dinner also comes with applesauce, tarter, and sour cream. The fish was so good! Batter had nice flavor and not too heavy, so you could actually taste the fish. The baked was also tasty and had a paprika seasoning to it. Pancakes had chives in it, I think, and were equally good. Both meals were great and would definitely come back again for the fish on a Friday and other delicious looking fare in another night! With a full bar and around 8 beers to chose from on tap, you're in for a good experience! read more

First time here, people working were great. The food, just ok. It was Friday night, Fish Fry night. Because it was fish fry night, there were many things on the menu that weren't available. No entrees, pizza, pasta. Boyfriend ordered fish fry... nice that they offer both fried and baked. He said the baked was delicious, the fried was lukewarm and not crispy. Potato pancakes were a great. He gave the fried fish another chance and ordered another piece, still not hot and crispy. I ordered philly steak and fries. Fries were yummy. The meat on the philly steak was way over done and thus rubbery. Might try again on a different night. read more

I went here years ago with my mom. She loved this place because she loved crab legs, the all you can eat fish and bloody Mary's. I came back to Illinois when she got sick and she ended up passing away pretty quickly. The day before her service I called and asked if They would have space for 30 people or so. I didn't plan very well and they said no problem. They had a new room that fit all of us comfortably and they kept the room private to us. Our service was good and the all you can eat fish was amazing. My family had a good time (my mom would have loved it). Thanks for the compassion and for accommodating us last minute. I'll be sure to go here every time I'm in Illinois to visit. read more

A friend and I went to have lunch last week. We decided to eat inside since the outside seating was all taken. There was only one other couple in the front restaurant and felt safe eating inside. We took our masks off after sitting at the table, but found the waitress and the people in the kitchen were not wearing masks, maybe we should have left but did not. We enjoyed our meals. One of the other waitress came up front when we went to leave (she did not have a mask on either). He comment to us as we were leaving was, "Make sure you wear those masks when you're driving your car home". What a disappointment from the staff! Liz L read more

Awful experience...the dining room was so loud from a large group of 20 that you could not even hear the person sitting at the table next to you. The large group was overly loud, slightly obnoxious, spilling beer...we asked the Hostess if we could be moved and she said there were no servers for the quiet other dining area. Our server acknowledged how loud it was too, and yet the Hostess did nothing for any of the other diners. Another group requested to be moved as well. 20 minutes after ordering, our server came to the table to tell one of us they are out of corned beef, but that the rest of our order was ready...how does that happen? They didn't know when the order was placed that they were out of corned beef. By the time the second choice went in, the rest of our food must have sat waiting, as most of it came out served to us at room temperature, starting to get cold. Two of the sides we ordered were also wrong. The server was spread too thin as well. We went out for a birthday dinner, and couldn't wait to leave...it was an overall very bad experience and the food was mediocre at best. The Hostess really could care less about any of the other diners. What should have been a nice birthday dinner was spoiled by this establishment. read more

Our first time and hey, why not on a busy Friday fish fry night. Parking lot was full and so was the bar. We got our name in and, by all that's holy, scored 2 seats. Surprising the wait wasn't that long - like maybe a Stella and a half. Quickly greeted at our table and I went with the AUCE fish fry while my wife got the perch. The breakfast omelets are amazing. The Nail omelet and SouthWestern being my favorites. Their wraps and burgers are delicious and their fish fry is excellent. Try the potato pancakes with it! They also do a Saturday night prime rib special that offers a HUGE piece of meat at a great price. Oh and it is delicious too! And for appetizers, the loaded chips (kettle chips with cheese, bacon and chives), the cheese curds and the bigger than Mexico nachos are all favorites. They have a nice beer selection, serve Coors Light in pitchers and make killer Bloody Mary's for those weekend morning kick offs. We have patronized the Rusty Nail for years and used to love their AYCE fish fry. Our last experience was horrendous! The owner's mother was constantly hovering over us; questioned whether we were going to eat the additional fish we asked for; was watching everything we were eating; kept cleaning around the table when we were still eating; and, made snide comments throughout our stay. As it was my husband's birthday, we wanted to make it a special luncheon. She made us so uncomfortable, we finally decided to leave even though we wanted to order additional refreshments for his special day. When I asked for the bill and a container "to-go" since we didn't finish our food, she advised the wait staff not to give us the container. We felt like unwanted guests in someone's home who wanted us to leave. Don't offer AYCE fish fry if you don't want people to order more. After all these years, we will not be back. We have always enjoyed the place and especially the wonderful wait staff, but the mother needs to stay away from the public. read more

We were looking to "get out of town", so to speak on a lazy Friday night. We "Yelped" in hopes of maybe finding a new spot with a decent fish fry. We found it! It wasn't that far out of the way (we're in Crystal Lake), but we felt like we were out of town - kind of a perfect happy medium. The fact that the parking lot was packed when we showed up hinted to the fact that the reviews were legit. We put our name on the waitlist and crossed our fingers that the food would live up to our expectations. BEST fish fry ever. We had a combo platter of baked and fried and it was amazing. Potato pancakes on the side were a nice touch! Seriously - this fish was perfectly cooked and absolutely fantastic. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The owner's wife was working and made her rounds at each table. The place was packed but customers were happy, the staff was cool, and they moved customers in and out efficiently while still making everyone feel welcome. People there were friendly and you could tell this was a "regular" stop for most of the people there. This was worth the (short) drive and one of our happy new finds! The food was good and our server was super sweet and very attentive. We went there for fish fry but I am celiac so I had the baked fish. First of all, the portions were monstrous. My meal was enough for 3 people. The baked fish was pretty basic but my husband really enjoyed the fish fry. He prefers a crispy fish fry as opposed to the thick, beer batter style that many places serve so this was right up his alley. The restaurant was clean and bright but we did have to sit next to the video gambling area. That whole thing is ruining the bars in this area.
