I really really wanted to love this place. We skipped the line at Dulan's for a more chill experience. The service was not as bad as other reviews suggested, but the food was a bit of a disappointment. I think a couple of things would have made my dining experience better. 1. Bread: What is soul food without carboliciousness? No cornbread? No roll? No Hawaiian Roll? No crackers? Nothing? Can I get a biscotti or something? I felt cheated. 2. Chicken Options: Their only options, for the most part, are for wings? Why only wings? No breast meat? No thigh? No leg? I want wings only at Wingstop. Doesn't seem appropriate for a soul food restaurant. Also they are the tiniest wings ever. Like the size of pigeon wings or something. They have "grilled chicken breast" but they are itty bitty chicken titties. My mother said "it looks like they fell out of a sandwich." It was sad. Also, how don't you have any yams? C'mon son. Thats Soul Food 101. 3. Portions: Why are your plates so big if your food is so small? This is not an illusion that works in your favor. If you're going to give such small portions, please get smaller plates. My mother got her food and felt some kind of way about her portions. I'm sure you could have pulled the wool over her eyes with appropriately sized plates. 4. Cost: Even though the prices aren't exorbitant, for the portions and the cuts of meat that they have I would have expected to pay at least $3-4 less. Nope. Never again. Hands down the worst experience I've ever had at an establishment. And sorry to say I can't even speak to the food. Because we never got it. Started off by waiting about 15mins to sit. That's fine. Not a problem at all. Once we we're seated outside, we were never handed any menus. So I stood up and went inside to speak to another waitress. She mentions some mumbo jumbo about systems being down and having to do things manually, and write things down manually and blah blah blah. Forgive me, because I don't work in the restaurant field, but when I did, I just don't see how a pay system being down has anything to with us waiting 30mins for physical food. Please feel free to explain it to me if you know. Look, I know things happen and I have A LOT of patience working in a service industry myself. But communication is key. And there was none. At all. It was only when I started asking for any kind of an answer that any of this was expressed. We paid for our drinks and bounced. Such a disappointing venture. I was so set for the Mac and Cheese. The waitress was extremely apologetic and I truly felt for her. But I also made sure to let her now that if she had just said something or made an appearance since it would've been different. I decided to come to Rusty Pot Cafe with a hungry stomach and high hopes for deliciousness based on all the yummy photos I see here. However when it came time to order I was seriously disappointed. I asked for the fried catfish and mac n cheese. I was promptly told by the waitress that they were out of catfish even though their board clearly marked that it was the special of the day. When I mentioned that maybe they should at least remove that so not to confused other customers I was completely brushed off. When I asked about the mac n cheese which was featured in multiple of the photos on their page, I was told that customers often post wrong photos to the incorrect restaurants pages and that they never had it on the menu?! Better we were fully done with our meal she started rushing us with the bill. Even though the chicken n waffles and the shrimp n grits we ended up getting were pretty tasty and this waitress may not be a full representation of this eatery but her non caring, unapologetic attitude made my dining experience here very unpleasant and unfortunately I don't think I would return. read more

I wanted to try this "hidden gem" that I've been hearing about. A very small place with approximately 6 tables. Even with so few tables we had to wait for a clean table. We were finally seated but after 15 minutes, no one came to take our order, not even offered a cup of coffee. Finally after about 20 minutes the waiter walked over to us and apologised for the wait then followed up with we would not be able to be served because the cook was unable to keep up. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. My party along with one other walked out unfed and unhappy. Nothing was even offered as an incentive for us to come back at a later time. She took a few mins to read over it and said it does not say that, i then asked that even if it doesn't say that you still aren't going to honor it and she said no she wasn't, they don't take them on weekends. The waitress sat me at the outside table. She came outside and took the order for the 2 guys seated at the only other outside table and then said she would be right back to take my order. 20 minutes, yes 20 minutes went by and she never came back. I went inside to find her and said I would like to order and she said I am busy I will be with you in a minute. Small menu, you can tell they take pride in using the freshest ingredients and cooking everything to order. The waitress checked with us several times to make sure everything was good, which it was. It's always great to see another good restaurant open up in Inglewood, which has plenty of junk food, but less than a dozen places of this variety. If I judge Southern cooking by the consistency of the grits, this is one of the best in LA. The service is great, the food was homestyle and excellent, the coffee was good and the price is right. The only downside, of course, the famous parking meters of Inglewood, which seem to extend for miles down empty side streets, so bring a few quarters or take public transportation. For those who know Inglewood, this is an excellent alternative to the Serving Spoon, which is rightly famous but tends to get extremely crowded on weekends. read more

Surprised on two levels: the breakfast potatoes didn't taste fresh....they tasted like they were cooked maybe the day before then reheated. Reheated potatoes just don't taste the same as fresh made. Second, I was surprised that there was only one piece of catfish!
