I've visited this restaurant 3 times over the last few months. I feel that it is important to support new small business owners, welcoming them with patronage and good will so that they have an opportunity to thrive. While I do agree that the food is good, during my last visit 3 weeks ago, the customer service I received was such that I will probably never go there again. On that last occasion, I arrived at the Rusty Pot 10:45 AM, on a Saturday morning and the restaurant was relatively busy. Please note this was 45 minutes later than both of my previous 2 visits. With nowhere to sit I patiently waited for someone from the establishment to direct me. I was waiting for a friend to join me at the restaurant so there was no immediate need to be seated. However there was no one from the establishment in sight to accommodate me, and their "absence" continued for about the next 5 minutes. I thought to myself that this later time period was much busier for them but I continued to wait patiently, texting my friend to see how soon he would be arriving. Suddenly a young female waitress came bolting from behind a partition for the food preparation area collecting payment from a group of customers sitting at double tables next to the wall. Those patrons left and she quickly wiped off the tables where they were seated then zipped back behind the partition...she never acknowledged my presence! I was fine with that, again assuming that they were pretty busy, so I simply sat down at the double tables she had just cleaned and I continued texting. At this point new customers were walking in also looking to get seated, but they walked all the way down the aisle to the area where you place orders for take out. Suddenly the young waitress came back out and over to where I was sitting. She looked at me awkwardly and asked me if I were "next on the Waiting List." I said, "excuse me, I don't understand, what list?" She informed me that I was supposed have my name placed on the waiting list. I replied that I wasn't aware because during my last 2 visits I didn't have to do that.; I simply came in and sat down waiting for friends to join me. The waitress asked if it were only 1 other person coming this time, to which I answered "yes" and she directed me to sit at the "high table for 2" across the aisle where a couple had just left. Again, no problem because although more people were arriving and I assumed all had been handled. However then a male waiter came from behind the food preparation partition (where he apparently had been all that time). He came over to where I was sitting and again the awkward dialog began. He asked the same question that the waitress asked and of course my reply was the same except...I added that the waitress "directed" me to move over there. The waiter told me that the table was reserved for people that came to the pick up area and signed the Waiting List first. I looked over at the pick up area and there were about 8-10 people there. I asked how would anyone who walked in, not greeted by the establishment, know what to do. There was no signage on the door, the walls or anywhere directing people to place their name on a Waiting List. At that time I had been waiting there for 20 minutes, clearly present before all of those people who walked in after me. He replied "I'm sorry sir, you have to get on the list before you can be seated." By that time became very upset as more customers continued to walk in and over to the pick up area. I asked the waiter how long the wait would be and he said 30 minutes. I told him that I wasn't going to wait another 30 minutes behind all of those people. He asked if I would like to speak to the manager; I told him no, I would like to leave. Who feels comfortable eating in a restaurant where they've just complained to the manager?? I left the restaurant and sat in my car parked next to the meter for about another 10 minutes until my friend came. We drove a couple of blocks down to "Flip It Cafe," 441 East Manchester Blvd. At "Flip It Cafe" there were no parking meters, someone greeted us as we entered the restaurant, they handled placing us on their waiting list and less than 3 minutes later they took us to seats of our choice. The food was good and received quickly too. Moral To The Story: As hard as people work for their money they need to feel welcomed, directed and comfortable as consumers. It should be an efficient smooth process leaving the customer respected and appreciated for their patronage. read more
