It took about ten minutes before my breakfast order was taken, and then over an hour before the food arrived. I came here for breakfast thought it had great portions and pretty good food. But..... then it was time to check out and I had a lottery ticket next to me the whole time it was for $57 bucks I went to go to the bathroom and came back the table was cleared and the ticket for $57 bucks was gone. Vanished. I asked the server and she claimed she didn't see it. Hummm...,, so where did it go? Prior to me going to the bathroom I paid my bill and gave the server a pretty hefty tip. But still the ticket disappeared. So I dont trust this place whatsoever cause how does a lottery ticket just disappear? There's only one reason. It was stolen by the beloved server. So I don't give this place a good rating. And if you go there make sure all your belongings are close to you cause they may disappear. read more

We used to enjoy going here but it has gotten worse and worse over the last year. This last time our pancakes were burned, sausage was cold and scrambled eggs were under cooked. I'm honestly really confused by the people bashing this place, who seem to describe it as a dirty sweatbox. On the contrary, the place seems like an oddly preserved time capsule of the 70s, a perfectly preserved specimen of roadside diners past, like someone was planning to shoot a Tarantino movie at any time. The food is normal diner fare, good stick-to-your-ribs breakfasts, but nothing fancy. The wait staff is warm on charm. Some menu choices seem like a throwback, too; eggs benedict, thick slab bacon, and eggs, buckwheat pancakes, fish, and chips. I'm surprised not to find pigs in a blanket. People say the downstairs is a problem child, but I've never been down there, and all those reviews are from four years ago. We went to Rustys for breakfast this morning. There was only one blonde waitress. She was trying her best to keep up. There was an older woman there working in the office that did not help any customers. One of the customers got up and refilled coffees. He brought me a cup or I probably wouldn't have gotten any. The hashbrowns were not completely cooked and the eggs were over cooked and rubbery. Bacon was crisp. Toast was fine. When the other woman decided to help she just bussed empty tables and rang the register. The tables could wait, people needed coffee and orders taken. Very disappointing. read more

I want to support local businesses, but I just can't with this one. I was on a business trip to Ontario and we were done and ready to head out, so we stopped here for a late breakfast/early lunch. When we walked in, there was a foul sewage-like stench throughout the whole restaurant. We went upstairs into the dining area, which was actually pretty nice and looked very promising. We took a seat and the waitress acknowledged us immediately, then let us know that she was the only waitress working so it might take a while. Again, this was alright, and not her fault. We waited and ordered. When one of us ordered a soda from the fountain, we were told that it was broken and only came out flat. Again, it's something that happens, but it started piling up. We asked for just water all around and gave our orders. I left to go use the restroom. When I got inside, one sink had a large brown smear across the entire thing, looking very much like a fecal incident. There were red stained towels on the stand beside it. Inside the actual toilet, there were no toilet sanitizer dispensers, nor was there any toilet paper at all, in either stall. I did my standing up business, washed my hands in the second sink, and left quickly. I will note, the bathrooms smelled nicer than the restaurant thanks to the industrial sanitizer spray that spritzed out every so often. I went back and joined my group, who were sitting around with glasses of water, swatting at the non-stop hoard of flies that were buzzing our table. This seems to be a thing for Ontario this time of the year, we're told, but it was just one more thing that didn't get to us. Our group leader said she just wanted to leave and get back home to Salem, and we all concurred. We got the waitress and stopped our order from being put in, but were adamant that it was absolutely nothing she did. We tipped her six dollars for the need to clean up our table, but were glad to get out. We ate in the car at a McDonald's down the road. I honestly can't ever see going back to this location. I hope the owners or management can do something to get the smell gone and address the issue of their restrooms, but I can't even consider coming back to give this place a second shot. read more

Rustys is a café inside a building that was a church, church of the Nazarene. When the church closed, the Sullivan family bought the building in 1977. Rumor has it that Mr. Sullivan was a redhead and he's the one known as Rusty. The restaurant is inside the sanctuary space. Looks like an A-frame chalet inside a big box building. The lobby entrance and restrooms are the first thing you encounter, before you step up into the sanctuary restaurant. Local transients use the restrooms in the lower lobby without scrutiny. Hence, the restrooms are disgusting as other reviewer's note. But if you step up into the sanctuary café, it's way better! Two sports bars are on the backside of the building where Sunday school rooms once were. I stopped for bacon and eggs. The thick slab bacon was impressive and delicious although a little bit dry. The eggs and hashbrowns were standard fare. (See pics) As others have said, the waitress was a sweetheart. And yes, all the locals come here to eat, and she knows them all by name. I felt I was dinning with the parishiners at a church luncheon! The Sullivan family has since passed the business on to the next generation, I was told. All in all of this was an average breakfast in a very unusual place with a very interesting history. If they solved the bathroom problem, they'd double their business, in my opinion! read more

100% the worst chicken fried steak I've ever had. It was completely awful in all ways, so very bad. Gravy is flavorless sludge, 99% sure the scrambled eggs are out of a carton. The toast was good and they had multiple jam flavors, that's all I can say that's positive, although again I'm 99% certain it wasn't the sourdough I asked for. She was friendly and swift, she handled the cash,seating and waitressing. The food was awesome, we travel a good bit and their Country Fried Steak and gravy....some of the best ever. Rusty's has been there for 47 years, since 1977 and it looks like it. Its very dark and dreary. I don't believe it has EVER been updated.....paint, carpet, etc... It is in dire need of a deep cleaning. The bathrooms were filthy. There were paper towels in both the toilets and urinals which plugged them up. We have been there for breakfast several times but will not go again. Its not that the food was bad, but if what you see with your eyes the general appearance and smell, how clean/dirty is the kitchen where your food is cooked? I will say the service was good. We had no issue with the waitresses and their professionalism. So until this place does a full update of Rusty's, we will not be back. read more

Been in the Ontario area for several years now and finally got around to Sunday after church lunch at Rusty's pancake and stake house. I wanted a club sandwich on a hot August summer day, and my wife had the chef salad. The club was on sour dough bread but the bread was not toasted more like it had been dried not even warmed. My wife's salad was more like an onion Salad with velveta cheese and a few other tid bits of stuff covering the onions. Lettuce was a little brown too. Defiantly a place to eat in the 1970s-1980s. It needs an update. Where is Gordon Ramsay hell on wheels? Maybe he could help boost this 20 table one waitress place to get it rating better. read more

I didn't read the reviews and never have eaten here before. Like the others have said, the smell of sewage hits you smack in the face when you first walk in. Not sure what it was, it dissipates some as you go up the stairs. We ordered or breakfast and every now and then I smelled it. Such a shame because the service was awesome and the breakfast was good, ( except the biscuits were hard and definitely not homemade.) The ham with my eggs were delicious. Then I read the reviews. As one of the few Portland transplants who can personally attest to having visited anything west of the Art Museum, I can safely say that Rusty's is one of the absolutely FEW restaurants in this part of the state. For that reason, and perhaps no other, I give it two stars. The building looks as though it may have been a church in the distant past, and probably still has the original carpet. That's right. We stopped by there on our way to Pendleton, and were grateful for breakfast period, after having spent a few days out by Succor Creek, where little signs of humanity exist at all. Rusty's serves up warm breakfast, and the semblance of coffee where, again, these things are few and far between. I ordered an omelette, and with the first bite recognized a quantity of butter or grease previously unexperienced. I stopped after a few bites in fear of my heart's health, and left it at that. Visiting family in the area. Came in with a group of 7. The restaurant needs a little upkeep, and it's a bit smoky, but the atmosphere is great and we had a wonderful waitress. She was very attentive, friendly. Food was great, we had biscuits and gravy, buckwheat pancakes (I highly recommend, if you like them), eggs, ham, a blt sandwich. Disgusting. My grandma and grandpa used to frequent the place for their buckwheat pancakes. I can't attest to the greatness of said pancakes, but I can attest to the multiple visits I've had and the sub-par at best food. On at least 3 visits over a 2 month period the waffle iron was busted and had not been replaced (I'd order a waffle only because it is usually impossible to *bleep* one up...you'd think). The last visit we had, the waffle iron was finally fixed, and no joke, the wasted paycheck cooking it burnt the *bleep* out of it. I've had to settle for a cup of coffee on at least 5 of 10 occasions due to bad food and/or the waffle iron being broke. Don't order anything outside of coffee (or buckwheats if you'd ask my Grandparents). Their hashbrowns are greasy and disgusting, their pancakes are burnt (as are the waffles) and the hired help (outside of the waitstaff, they're pretty nice) couldn't cook their way out of a bag of ramen. Skip 'Crusty's' and visit the Sunrise Restaurant in Boise off of Glenwood and State Streets for real country cooking at a much better price. read more
