Updating my review after a few years, dining in the restaurant with significantly better than take out lol! It's a seat, yourself type of restaurant, and the staff is attentive, and nice! Ordered a couple sandwiches, the Portobello, blue cheese sandwich, and a tuna melt delicious! Also had their ghost pepper quesadilla, which was nice it was actually spicy (It's very hard to impress Mexicans with the level of heat on anything). I'm a vegetarian. Hence why I eat at Rutabegorz. My chili burrito (that doesn't include chicken) came to the table soggy, drenched in raw onion and stuck to the plate with burnt cheese. Server/manager never apologized. She was too concerned with the fact I was complaining about my horrific meal. This place is the original "hippie" coffee house. I think it opened here in Fullerton in 1970. The ambiance is totally chill, you kind of expect to see John Lennon sipping tea over in the corner. The food is delicious, fresh, and plentiful. I have always loved the cockyleeky soup. The coffee is naturally delicious. The service is always friendly and low key. This is a local treasure and I am so thankful I got to enjoy the food and space with my lovely friend while visiting recently. Came this morning right at 10:30 and they were ready to go! Ordered a hot chocolate, artichoke dip, a chicken sandwich on a French roll and a pasta marinara for my son. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs but we had an active morning. I recommend the artichoke dip and tortilla chips. Super yummy very authentic and a very large portion. Definitely shareable. Most of their food is well proportionate which I love because you get a bang for your buck. The ambience is super cute and eclectic, with different types of art pieces that are definitely conversation pieces. I give this review four stars only because I ordered a hot chocolate and I ended up getting lightly tinted steamed milk. When I let the waitress know, she looked at me kind of confused and then I told her, it taste like steam milk. When I let her know I didnt want it after all and that she could can take it off my check she told me she already charged me for it. So without making a fuss I then asked her to put more chocolate in it and she brought it back and it taste the same. Perhaps it's just my taste buds, maybe I'm used to a different type of chocolate, regardless, I feel that I should've had the option of having it removed from my check since I didn't drink it at all. Came here for brunch with a friend as they open at 10:30am. No wait! Quaint little restaurant in DT Fullerton with two other locations. Free parking right out front or at the nearby parking structure. Eclectic menu catering to vegetarians and decent prices for the big portions. I ordered the Mexican Casserole which was loaded with veges such as zucchini, olives, tomatoes, onions, rice, and cheese. The cheese really added and brought together the flavors. Disappointed in the service!! The decor and vibe were cool, but we were ignored most of the night- my quinoa dish was sloppy and spilling out of the bowl, and was quite soupy. To have the containers of salsa and pico stuck in the food in the bowl was pretty horrifying. We asked for a refill of ice tea, which had no ice, and even though we were there for several hours, we got no offers of refills... When my companion paid the bill, he requested the table get cleared do we weren't looking at the duty dishes, but that never happened either! Had dinner with friends earlier at Rutaz and was happy to see they survived the pandemic! I love this location over the Orange location for nostalgic reasons, but also the staff here have always been really nice and attentive. Who eats here? Anyone that misses Souplantation, lots of vegetarians and vegans, those who enjoy a homestyle, healthy, almost farm-to-table, healthy/tasty and filling meal. Our main server Gerardo checked to make sure we were ok and asked us how we liked our appetizer and food. I ordered the seasonal, strawberry sensational salad and forgot it came in a HUGE bowl. I couldn't finish all of it and tried some of my friend's garlic chicken sandwich (I prefer the salad) but I only took two bites of that. I asked for a to-go box for my salad and Gerardo offered to bring a second box for the sandwich and I kindly informed him, I'm on an Only Fans diet and the sandwich would delay my start goal by 6 months. He thought it was funny. I didn't grab dessert, but my friends ordered their brownies to-go and said they have the best brownies. I've been coming to Rutabegorz for many years and I have never experienced such horrible service like I did today. I always order the same appetizer and salad every time I come to this establishment. I ordered the warm artichoke dip and I asked our waitress if I could have it toasted on top. ( This is my usual) but instead I was served overcooked and very dry pieces of artichokes, but that was only the beginning. We waited about 40 minutes for our food. When it finally arrived I had to ask repeatedly for an extra plate and dressing for my salad, it took another 15 minutes to get it. I then asked for the manager which apparently was our waitress Myra. I kindly asked her if they would be able to redo the artichoke dip. She then told me she couldn't take it back and if I wanted another one I would be charged for 2 orders. What really upset me was her attitude when she deliberately threw the plates towards my 80 year old mother. The table across from us order extra mozzarella and we charged for it. Needless to say it really put a damper on our meal. Their justification was they were too busy, which is understandable.It was disappointing to be treated so poorly. After this experience I would have to give it considerate thought as to whether or not I would patronize Rutabegorz Restaurant (Fullerton) again. read more

Review for takeout. Our Rutabagorz in Tustin is closing so we were in the area and thought we'd try the Fullerton location. Ordered the tried and true garlic chicken salad. It was spicy for some odd reason and yet flavorless. The chicken was dry and added nothing. We usually love this salad and fight over leftovers- not this time! Then, we ordered the pumpkin cookie and was not warned it is actually a heavy scone like mound. It looked like a failed home baking experiment with some icing barely smeared on top. We declined it and decided on the cowboy cookies (not sure that was the name)- supposed to be oatmeal, cornflakes, chocolate chips, etc. Not a single chocolate chip in any of the cookies available. We took them anyway because we'd already paid and just wanted to get out of there. Not good- flavorless and odd like the whole experience. Really surprised this place has the same star rating as the Tustin and Orange locations because there was no comparison. We got no value for the $25 spent and will not return. read more

My husband and I decided to come on a Friday night and it wasn't busy at all. Upon entering you seat yourself and a waiter will come to your table to take your order. The atmosphere is very charming since it was a medical office/house before! We ordered the artichoke dip to start. It's different than most other restaurants. Theirs has a looottt of pieces of arthichoke in it, which I loved! We also got the cockie leeky soup, which tasted better than fresh. It didn't taste the same after reheating the leftovers. For entrees we got the garlic chicken sandwich and the bbq chicken sandwich. The sandwiches were good, but nothing special. Overall, though the dishes are ones we could probably make ourselves at home, we would come again since we can taste that the ingredients used is fresh and healthier than most other restaurants. Tip: They have a daily dip that is 54 cents, but the day we went it was a white bean hummus dip. It didn't intrigue me enough for me to get it, but their dips are usually pretty good! read more

And it was a huge disappointment. I do have to say that the servers were all really nice and friendly. The menu is massive, and has way too many choices, looking at it gives me analysis paralysis and I had a huge hard time making a decision. Ended up ordering the soup and salad combo with a bowl of chili. The salad was basically a bowl of lettuce with some shredded carrots and that was all. The salad dressing probably came in a huge box and tasted full of chemicals. The chili was especially disappointing, it was all beans with few traces of ground meat. The ingredient was a very low quality. Honestly I really don't care how big the portion size is if the food is not even taste good. This is very much diner food that just isn't good at all. This is a retraction of my previous review of one star at Rutabegorz on 3/9/25. After speaking with the General Manager Dane about my experience I have decided to edit my review. I agree that our experience was a perfect storm of different issues, both service and food. Dane and I had a nice conversation about my experience and he assured me that this is the same place with the same cooks and recipes that they have always had. He apologized for what had happened and that he had a family emergency that day and wasn't at the restaurant. It appears that the Mac and Cheese has been changed to one that the customer base liked better and I just didn't know that it had changed. He agreed that the soup sounded like it had not been mixed properly or something and he would follow up on it. The food was not horrible, just not what we had expected. I've lived in Fullerton for 30 years and have been to Ruda's at least 100 times and always happy. Truth is I don't eat out much and prices have all increased, not Ruda's fault. I was not influended to change my review, this is all my choice and doing. All in all it appears it was a perfect storm the day we were there. It happens. I am too a small business owner and regret my harsh review on another small business just trying give a great meal to a small community. I guess I didn't consider it was just a bad day. Dane the GM was gracious and offered another meal, which was more than I was expecting. Thank you Dane for attending to my issues and having the conversation to clarify things. I will be back soon. We came here to celebrate a birthday. They brought our birthday girl a fabulous ice cream and cookie treat, complete with candle. We had the artichoke dip as an appetizer that had tremendous flavor with thick chips that were crunchy. I had the southwestern quinoa bowl that was a little spicy but very filling. I always want to love this restaurant, but it repeatedly falls short. I hadn't been for a while so I decided to give it a try again. It was a cold evening so I thought soup was a good choice. Cocky Leeky is usually good and it was how I remember, except cold. Our server was attentive and nice, there were only a few diners, so I'm not sure if he let my soup sit before bringing it out, or it was plated that way. Also, somehow they managed to make a salad with a vinaigrette dressing taste bland. The garlic chicken salad was really lacking. The chicken was almost absent, and had not a hint of garlic. What was purported to be feta tasted like tofu. Even my glass of wine tasted off, It was overall not a good meal. I think it will be a while again before I go back. read more

It takes a lot "wow" me. And they did it! I used to be a trainer for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Service is what we taught. This place delivered the "A highly personalized, unexpected extra touch" ... the "WOW". I was feeling a bit nostalgic and wanted to go visit. I moved away and haven't been back for about 10 years plus. I was delighted to see that nothing has changed about this restaurant. Very eclectic, colorful, and fun. The artwork is vivid and alive. They have a great menu, farm to table items, and healthy, good home made food. I ordered the Mediterranean delight, which was a pita stuffed with shrimp, artichokes, lettuce, tomato, and cream cheese. It was something I often got when I was in high school. It's a bit messy to eat, but it was always one of my favorites. I also got a cup of soup. I originally wanted the chicken and wild rice soup, but the server told me it would be another 10 to 15 minutes just for the soup. Being that I was really hungry, I didn't want to wait and instead I ordered the potato cheese soup, which was delicious. I'm picky about my iced tea and I believe it's all in the color. They got it just right. When the server came to bring me the check, she had told me that she is packing up a bowl of chicken and wild rice soup for me so I can have it when I go home for dinner. Wow! That was my extra touch which was unexpected. I love this place, it's good for everyone and it's very green and healthy. Come support them for the team looks like they're all college age so I'm sure they can use the money. but seriously, it is a really great and fun place, lots of things to look at. This is such a lovely spot to gather for American cuisine. This restaurant is pretty big so it can accommodate for big groups or small groups. One thing I love about this place is their portions. They food always tastes amazing and they never hold back with their ingredients. I can order something like their Mexican food and they will pile on the cheese and toppings on top which I love. They usually have a special hummus and chips item you can order only for dine in but it makes a nice appetizer to add on to your meal for very cheap. The whole place is adorned with a ton of decorations and it feels very old fashioned but also very homey. read more
