I came out here with my girlfriend which I haven't seen in a while and it was a nice chance to catch up. 5 = food 5 = service 5 = ambience I ordered their chili special. Chock full of beans and lots of cheese. I forgot that they give you a lot of food so when I ordered their full sandwich and a cup of soup I could only finish the soup and have a sandwich. For some reason, it's been a while since I was last at Ruta's. I am so thankful I remembered it today. I have been going to Ruta's since probably 1980. Pre- Starbucks, it was the only local place that had great coffee. Their food has always been yummy. Tonight, I had the infamous garlic chicken salad. I had a regular size which is still huge. I added feta. I was famished because I had skipped lunch. I asked for extra dressing on the side but I won't do that again. They provided the perfect amount. I. ate. the. whole. salad. In the past, I have split a large salad with a friend and been perfectly satiated. The rest of my party had the cockie leeky soup and a thai wrap. Soup so loved, a soup order to go was made. Cute cafe alert!! Girls spa day had to end on a healthy note! My friend suggested this place, since it's nostalgic to her when she would meet her grandparents for lunch here. The waitress we had was super sweet and delightful. When we were going through the menu, she stopped by and made sure we were okay with a funny comment "let me know when you have questions about our novel." Which put a smile on us from ear to ear. The extent of the menu made everything sound amazing. I couldn't decide! Because I had a heavy training day that evening, I opted for the classic cesar salad with chicken. Wait, little cesar salad, and nothing about it was little. I usually don't like tomatoes in my salad, but these ones made my salad taste a hint of sweet freshness. DO NOT order the Penne Pasta with creamy Alfredo sauce if you don't like sour cream. My sister and I went here for lunch today and the Penne Pasta with Alfredo cream was horrible. Way too much sour cream in the sauce. Had to be hands down the worst Alfredo sauce I've ever had. After two bites I had to put it aside. The cook needs to take a few lessons in how to prepare a good alfredo sauce. My sister had the Garlic Pasta and it was prepared to how it was described in the menu. Service was ok. I have never left a zero tip my entire life until now. What the heck was up with our waitress? She was acting like a drugged robot. My husband and I looked at each other like "what is happening?". For example, She puts the food down, stairs at it for a bit, then looks up at me like she's posing for Instagram. It was bizarre. She barely came to our table. Meanwhile, the waitress serving next to us was busting her bum off doing a great job. They are on the Main Street in Tustin and have lots of public parking available that is free. Inside is decorated very quaint and cozy. Very cool decor on the walls. They have a delicious Chimichurri bowl. However I felt like there was a lot of rice and I'm the dish needed more of the sauce. Overall delicious You'll notice this menu is different from other locations and doesn't have some or my go-to options Unfortunately each location is managed by someone different. Four star rating is because they don't have vegan cheese or other vegan items that the Orange location has. The word "rutabegorz" comes from a now extinct ancient language word for "monsterous salad." Haha not really, but it definitely should. This place is king of the gigantic, delicious salad. My personal favorite so far is the Ultimate salad, which has avocado, shrimp, cheeses, ham, salami, cucumber, carrots, and all sorts of other good stuff. It is quite satisfying with balsamic dressing and large enough for two meals, really. The menu also has numerous other vegetarian-friendly options, from soups to salads to sandwiches. Special shout out to the cookies and carrot cake - YUMMY! They currently have the patio open for restaurant dining and a few tables set up on the sidewalk outside nearby as well. People don't wear masks when they are sitting at the tables but the staff does. Some also wear gloves. I have used the call ahead option for pick up and so far is been hassle free and seamless. They have a touchless system for paying which is nice. So far every order has been correct and right on time! Five health-conscious stars! read more

All three of these restaurants are iconic and each is different from anywhere else and each other. The food is great and they are amazing places to visit. Not at all typical of restaurants in Orange County, which is too bad, and they are not easily categorized. This is one of my favorite places to go in Old Town Tustin. They have other locations in Old Town Orange and Fullerton but I have no idea where the one in Fullerton actually is. Most of the staff has worked here for a long time and the service is always pretty good. Before Covid 19 you could pretty much seat yourself anywhere but now they will try to find a seat for you since they recently re-opened the dining rooms. You also have the option to sit on the patio which is great in the summer when you can look out in between the Grecian columns. The food is what I call "70's and 80's health food" it's not a place you could really do keto and it's not fully vegetarian or vegan. and I couldn't tell you if thee dairy products are organic or anything but the menu is full of options and you can go about as healthy or not-so-healthy as you want. Their fresh juices are great, they make pretty good coffee drinks, they do serve beer and wine. the salads are bigger than most humans and their sandwiches and quesadillas are my hubby's favorite. It came in a very large bowl and was almost too much to eat! The dressing was delicious and the salad was very well balanced. I was able to get a little bit of everything with each bite. All of the choices looked very healthy. I opted to go with the garlic chicken. All of the dishes were very well portioned. The salad was served in a big bowl loaded with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes avocado and chicken. The vinegar dressing had just the perfect amount of tanginess and garlic flavor. By far one of my favorite restaurants. No restaurant can match the salads at Rutabegorz. My go to is the Garlic Chicken salad (14.99 for the small) with an amazing dressing. Everything is organic and so flavorable. My friend got the large Thai chicken/shrimp salad (17.99 for the large) with a peanut dressing. That was amazing too. I love the old atmosphere. I've been coming to Ruta's for nearly 20yrs, and have gone to all 3 locations. They're all similar but also distinct from each other, and I love each location's vibe. Their food is really yum AND generally healthy and I never feel gross even after I eat all of the entire (large) portions. Ingredients are usually super fresh. That is, until this past week when I had my usual Tuscan kale salad with turkey and cranberries at the Tustin location. I get this salad nearly every time I'm here since they've offered the salad (at least 6 yrs now). This time, I got a lot of bad, wilted/yellowing kale (see pic)...nearly 1/5 of the entire bowl was just bad and I had to pick it all out. Too, there was very little turkey and cheese too. The whole salad was just off. This is one of a handful of visits where the food has been sub-par, while most of my past visits over the years have been great. This is not a fancy place but for the money, you can't beat the quality of the food!! For under $13 I got a larger wrap with pasta And fruit salad on the side. They have $0.52 specials where you get a small cup of dip with some chips which is great to get a couple of for the table. (Last night was corn and black bean dip, quite tasty!) The decor in this location is adorable. Lots of antique coffee pots and interesting artwork around the room. I posted pictures of all of the wraps and salads from the table. We got there and were told to sit anywhere by the woman at the door. My wife and I sat in a booth. As soon as we sat down a gentleman gave us our menus and then told us we had to move. When I asked why, he said someone else was waiting for a table. I recently had surgery, so it was hard for me to sit on the regular chair without a cushion. My wife was upset that they had already told us to sit down, then asked us to move. Never saw the guy waiting, and I thought it was extremely rude for them to ask us to move after we were told to sit anywhere. We complied and were not happy for the rest of the lunch. We were offered no compensation whatsoever for what happened. The only saving grace was the woman that served us at the table was extremely nice and helpful. I am hoping someone from the restaurant reaches out and gives us an explanation of why this happened. read more

I usually call in my orders to-go and it's always ready pretty quickly. Parking is easy and getting in and out of there is relatively quick. I've eaten here a handful of times because I like their tuna sandwiches, but the pasta they include with it is so bland. I have to add things from home to it for it to taste like anything other than plain pasta. I've had their cobb salad, and the chicken tastes like napkin. Weird, right? I have also had their Gringo burrito and wasn't the best thing I've ever had. I haven't ordered either since then. The real kicker for me that put me off entirely are the attitudes of some of the servers. Some of them are so rude and walk in front of you without saying excuse me, and also never hold the door open for you if you're behind them going in or out of the restaurant. There is one instance when I came in for a pick up of my lunch, and a server was at the register and complained (to I believe the manager of the restaurant) about the tip she was just given.
