I can always rely on Rutaz to be the best, freshest, and friendliest place to bring my friends who visit OC. Great quality, healthy, vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free food. The pumpkin cookies and blueberry pies are to die for. I recommend the strawberry salad off the summer menu, the farmhouse bowl and the butternut squash ravioli off the winter menu, and any monthly dip or pastry. I come with a history of Rutaz in my family. My dad's pediatrician office became the Fullerton location. Ha. I grew up near the location in Orange and went to school by the location in Fullerton. I LOVE loving near the Old Town Tustin location so much! They have more space and the staff is always rad. I've skated there, during the summer, and sat on the patio with my skates on. Perfect date! Stumbled upon this great little spot for lunch with a friend. While there was a bit of a wait, they had chairs lined up out front to accommodate. The menu is large and extensive with MANY vegetarian options. Our server was very knowledgeable with the menu and gave us great options/additions. Really appreciate when the server has actually tried the menu and can make recommendations - so helpful! I opted for one of their seasonal salads - the Tuscan Kale. It was hearty and flavorful with a great mix of crunch from the pecans to salt from the Parmesan cheese - not to mention, it was huge! My friend ordered the tostada and also said it was delicious. I went there today for lunch with my wife who is a big fan of Rutabegorz. I ordered a Dala garden salad, hummus with pita and their $0.53 chips and dip special. The salad was $7.50 which I think is a bargain given today's prices. The hummus and pita is really suited more for 2 people so I shared with my wife and still took some home. The dip for the tortilla chips was a tasty blend of salsa, corn, and guacamole and only cost 53 cents! I like the artwork on the walls and the server was very friendly. So I went to this place very last minute because my best friend asked if I wanted to grab lunch outside somewhere. So we were looking for places that allow outdoor dining. Obviously not many do at the moment. We eventually found this place. Let me dive into the good and bad about this place. Sit back and relax as I give you a longer review. Parking: Now this is probably the best thing about this place! So there is a huge parking garage/lot located directly behind the restaurant. It is free to park there and it is a short walk to the restaurant. Restaurant: So we both arrive for our first ever time at this place. Yes they have a bunch of tables outside in random place, but most places do at this time. We could not tell if we sit down at a table or go inside because we could not figure out who actually worked at this restaurant. So we walked inside to order. The inside of the restaurant is actually kinda cute. It has a fun diner feel to it. So we start walking over to the only person who looks like she works there. Immediately she puts at us and yells for us to go back until we are ready to order. We then ask if she has a menu for us to even look at. She kept pointing to go back and find it. We start to walk over to the door and found a menu for us to look at. Strike 1 was the rude customer service. Menu: The menu actually is rather large and has a lot of items on it. I was kinda impressed. So we picked our items and started to walk to the counter to order. Now the lady comes back out to say "Are you guys finally ready to do this the right way?". Strike 2. Food: The food you get is very large portions and it is very filling. I had the bbq chicken sandwich. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had great flavor it it. The good food quality made up for the terrible customer service. Overall I will probably never return. Although the food was good the customer service was terrible. I did encounter one amazing employee outside. So we decided to sit at a table to eat our food. We had no idea that we could not do that since we went inside to order. However the super nice lady informed us of their policy, but told us not to worry about it today since we already started eating. I greatly appreciate that service! It's not like me to write a bad review regarding one very specific person. Usually when an establishment has poor service or no service, it is evident in in more than one person. At Ruta, the weak link is Cari. The gent that gave us our water had more pleasantry in his pinky fingers than Cari. He was very nice and we had a good time chatting for 30 seconds before he brought us our water and silverware. We've been supporting Ruta for many years. Today, 7/30/22 11:15 am we had the most blaise and crappy experience with Cari, our server. No hello, no how's your day, no smile, nothing. She simply placed her pen in the I'm just gonna take your order position and then darted us a "look." After she reluctantly took our order, she never once checked on us. We felt like we were inconveniencing her. She made us feel like we bothered her. She had this PISSED-OFF look on her face with an ARROGRANT attitude. However she did make it a point to be extra nice and engaging with the other family next to us. We paid our bill and we did not leave a tip, this is the first time EVER doing this. Even with the worst service experience, we have never done this. THIS experience was different, a level of conceit and snobbery at its best based on perhaps Cari's own preference. Cari, we knew the second you walked by us, it was so damn obvious. The thing is you could have tried to make it hidden. You made it a point to make it very known. We learned our lesson. Met friends for lunch here this past Saturday. We were quite a diverse group, one vegetarian, one vegan and two meat eaters. The menu was full of options for all of us. The service was amazing, our server was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Once we placed our orders for food came out quickly and everything looked delicious. The portions were large and not one of us were disappointed in what we ordered. I chose the option for half a sandwich and a salad. I got the tuna salad sandwich and the side Caesar salad. The side salad with large enough to be my mail, the tuna salad sandwich was delicious. We all had leftovers to take home and enjoy later. Came here last night after my fiance said she used to go here all the time growing up. I was excited to give it a try. For price, quantity, and taste you can't beat this place! I shared the butternut squash ravioli which was in a pesto sauce, the garlic chicken salad, and the chimmichuri bowl. I also got to try the BBQ chicken salad, the 51 cent dip, and cheesecake. For mains, I liked all three, but the salad was probably my favorite. It comes in a huge bowl... so much food. The bowl and ravioli were also good. Can't complain about either. I also want to say that I loved the 51 cent dip. I wish I could have ordered 5 for myself. To top it off, the cheesecake was great. Home made desserts are the best. Love this place. Salads The salads are so delicious. Recommend the the garlic chicken salad (add feta) as the ultimate favorite. The strawberry salad (with the honey mustard vinaigrette, I don't like the dressing it comes with) when you want something lighter. The turkey kale salad is pretty good when you need something more hearty. The Pear Blue cheese salad is a favorite of mine but this one might be seasonal. Hummus is pretty smooth. Smoothies Too sweet for my preference. Desserts Only the best! Our favorite is the oatmeal chocolate chip sometimes they add coconut and that is pretty good too. This is one of my favorite lunch spots in OC. I have been frequenting this location, which I prefer over the one in Orange, since 2000. The location is everything. You can sit on the outdoor patio on nice days and people watch or enjoy the view of the cute buildings that line old town Tustin. There is just a great vibe about this spot, its whimsical decor will remind you of being in your grandma's house. INSIDER TIP: make sure to visit during the holidays to see their super cute upside down Xmas tree that they hang from the ceiling. No holiday is ever complete for me without seeing it. The staff is all really nice and the bus boys are some of the kindest people you'll ever meet. As for the food, it never disappoints. I have tried most things on the menu and have never disliked anything I tried. My go to's though are the Baby Cobb salad (their salads are all quite large), the gringo burrito and I can never go wrong on a cold day with my favorite soup of all time, the Cockie Leeky. Their food is just fresh and the rye bread they use on a lot of their sandwiches is always the freshest. They have an extensive menu that can satisfy even the most restrictive of dietary needs. Oh and never skip dessert here. They have the BEST cheesecake in my opinion. Just try it. But if you fancy something a little less filling try one of their fresh baked cookies. My favorite one is the Oatmeal White Chocolate Chip Cranberry and only second to this is their Peanut butter cookie which is probably tied with the Snickerdoodle. I don't know how something so simple can be that good but I think it's the candied walnuts in that garlic chicken salad. Another star is the cocky leeky soup. Lovely, comfortable, welcoming restaurant with easygoing, capable & efficient wait staff who kept our water glasses topped off & brought us our yummy food & drinks quickly. The menu is extensive so you must check it out. But try to leave room for dessert! Both times we lingered after finishing our meals & the staff never once made us feel like we had to leave.
