DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY: I would like to offer a word of caution regarding using this company. My concern is not with the company or the folks they sent to do the work. The guys at our work site have been fantastic. I am speaking specifically about the man who drafted our original proposal and the last proposal dated 12/27/2024. When I first met Jim Steffan, I told him we wanted a turnkey project, including running the gas lines from the tank for our generator. He said his quote would include everything needed to get us up and running. We both knew that finding and leasing a tank was my responsibility. I already had a quote from a company in Brevard that said exactly that. Mr. Steffan sent me a quote not long after he came by the house and the quote was absent of any details other than the price. I didn't give it much thought at the time as we have had quotes like that from your contractors before and everything turned out just fine. On 12/24/2024, I signed the contract agreement. Sometime after signing the contract and after they placed the generator on our property, I had a conversation with Mr. Steffan. That is when he told me that his company doesn't run the gas lines and said that it was the propane company's job to do it. I spoke to the propane company who said they do not. I also spoke to a guy on the work crew for Rutherford Heat and Air, who said that they absolutely do run gas lines. The following is what I feel is the smoking gun, regarding my opinion that Jim Steffan is engaged in deception. Mr. Steffan told the owner of the company that he told me from the beginning that they don't do gas line work on these projects, and had it illustrated in a quote that was sent to me. That is a lie. The first time I saw this quote was June 6th of this year, in an email from the owner, Eric Fenster. Mr. Fenster is the owner. In his email he tells me that Jim Steffan is an outstanding employee who does not engage in deceptive practices. He included a screenshot of a quote that says "homeowner is responsible for the gas line from the tank to the generator". I have never seen this quote before. If I had, it would be in the file on my computer for this project. Here is why I believe Mr.Steffan is not telling the truth. The date on the quote that he claims was sent to me is dated 12/27/2024. I signed the agreement for this project on 12/24/2024. We paid half of the project cost on 12/26/2024 Both the date the contract was signed and the date we paid half of the project cost were before the date on his quote that he claims was sent. If his quote was legitimate, it would pre-date both the payment and the contract signing. It does not. Another thing that is suspicious is the fact that they sent me a screenshot of the quote dated 12/27/2024 instead of the original. I believe that he created this document on 12/27/2024, after the contract was signed and after the down payment was made. As for why he did it, I am not exactly sure. The pessimist in me says it was to gouge more money from the project. Perhaps he gets a percentage of each job that is done. The "why" he did it isn't easily proven, but his story of him sending me that quote might be determined by taking a few minutes to look at his sent emails. I would bet that there is no email sent to me with that document attached. read more

This business took us to small claims court over a $96.06 diagnostic fee which they said we wouldn't have to pay since the part needed wasn't on the truck to do the repair. When we got to court the owner then says that it's for a labor charge that we didn't pay to replace the part on the A/C unit. The judge said we had to pay the bill even though it states it's for a diagnostic call and we never got a bill for the labor. Again people, please read the reviews before you do business with this company. They got four complete system installs after ours because at that point things were OK with them and their price was very competitive. BUT - NOT ONE WORD of appreciation or thanks. They are the most ungrateful business we've ever used. Find someone else with very good reviews. read more

This company does not care about their customers. Our church used them to replace a HVAC unit. They left a hole in the roof around where the equipment came in. They didn't fully insulate a duck causing condensation to leak into our choir area. They had to come out to resecure the lines to the building that came loose right after the install. All of this was within the first year. 14 months after the install the defrost bored is bad and they want over $600 to replace even after all of the other issues. About 30 days ago we purchased an entire heating and air unit from RUTHERFORD HEATING AND AIR. On day two the thermostat was not working and the unit not heating. They came back two times and still could not repair the unit. My family has been freezing since that time! Our unit has been running on Auxiliary heat since then. We just got our electricity bill and it was twice what it normally is! We called Duke energy and they said our bill was because of the need to be on auxiliary heat! We called Eric the owner of RUTHERFORD HEATING AND AIR and he said that the unit needed to be replaced and he had no idea when that will be done. We kindly asked him for assistance with the electricity bill as it was caused by his unit! He said that any refund should be from Carrier and not his company. Our dealing and bill was with RUTHERFORD HEATING AND AIR and not Carrier! He has a moral and legal obligation for reimbursement for the extra cost of our electricity. This in addition to not having a functioning unit! His reaction was bad customer service to the maximum! As a local business this is a discourtesy to all who uses or will use this company! As a retired attorney I know the concept of buyer beware but the contract was with RUTHERFORD HEATING AND AIR and not Carrier. Our electricity bill should be immediately paid by RUTHERFORD HEATING AND AIR! His reaction to not immediately paying this bill simply shocks the conscience of good business practices! read more

I really wish I had read the reviews before giving this company any business. They came out today to do a duct cleaning job. They had a guy come out last week and give an estimate, then when another guy gets here this morning he's says that it's going to be $600 more than the estimate. Oh hell no!! Got that straightened out real quick!! Then what they said was going to be a two man and at least 8 hour job has turned out to be just one man and he's pretty much done in 4 1/2 hours. I'm thinking that he may have cut some corners. Ducts were supposed to be vacuumed and sanitized. Asked to see what he used to sanitize and he said he threw the bottle away. I recently purchased a home in Rutherfordton, NC. The previous owners had a brand new HVAC system installed in late 2020. While working in the crawl space I observed water leaking from the drain lines. It appears to me that it is leaking from of the connections in the drain line or coming from condensation from lines that were not properly insulated. Either way, I have water coming from the HVAC system in my crawl space which is not ideal. I called to advise them of the issue and was told the warranty is non transferable. I explained that it was not an issue with the unit, it had to do with the poor installation. The girl I spoke with advised me that, Cheryl, the operations manager, said that they would come out but I would have to pay for the repair. In my opinion, based on the quality of the work preformed on the installation of the HVAC system, and the poor customer service I would not recommend Rutherford Heating an Air. What they don't realize is they lost a potential service customer that happens to own and manage multiple properties. read more

We have had David out here twice to see why our unit (which they installed less than 6 yrs ago) was going up in temperature when we hadn't changed the setting; he 1st said we needed a txv valve ($650) which chris replaced; the problem continued & the 2nd time he came he said it was MY fault d/t my door to porch being open(8am) & the system was fine; problem continued so Harley came out said we needed a new compressor d/t the valves being weak (the compressor is a spiral model with NO valves) & said they'd send us a quote for cost of replacement; it's been almost 2 wks & we've heard nothing back!! We're going with another company to replace the whole unit...& I strongly advise others to not deal with this company d/t our experience. It's been beyond frustrating!! read more

Unfortunately, we are having issues with an installation that is fairly new. They charged for the first service call and they failed to fix the problem. Servicemen returned the following day and charged additional labor fees. I would not recommend using this company. read more
