He was honest about what was and wasn't possible while still making a lot of good things happen, and worked with us to land a fair, affordable price. He made a stressful move feel totally manageable. Long version: On the same day I e-mailed Up and Up's owner Matteo and posted this review--in fact, within an hour--he called and sent me a message. "I will make this right," he said. His actions over 2 weeks since then demonstrated his strong appetite to do as he promised. We discussed how this situation happened, and he took full responsibility for all of the elements of this that were preventable. In fact he took *personal* responsibility rather than throwing his crew under the bus, which was commendable. We talked about how he might more effectively communicate the fact that moving industry contracts fully protect moving companies from liability regardless of the cause--accidents or moving company negligence. My lesson: I should include full coverage insurance in my future moving budget. Matteo arranged for my damaged cabinet to be repaired, paid part of the costs of my unpacking crew (who had to play Jenga in order to carefully untangle the unsecured load), and promised to (re)train his crew. Despite the shifting load, we had very little breakage, and no breakage in the boxes they packed. For a cross-country move in a UPack truck (which is not known for gentle treatment of loads) this is a very good outcome. Matteo rightfully pointed out that I asked for help packing the kitchen the night before the move, which meant the crew moved quickly in the kitchen--hence the unlabeled boxes. I wish none of this had happened, but I'm very grateful for Matteo's integrity in committing to make it right.

On the day of our move, Brian and his crew arrived late and then were in a huge rush. Brian scheduled two jobs on the same day and he grossly miscalculated how long each job would take. The three movers who did come were very nice and polite but they did an atrocious job of packing our things. Our truck arrived in Boston a few days ago and many of our items are broken or damaged. They secured our truck with bunjee cords instead of straps so there was lots of shifting in the truck. Unfortunately, they chose not to wrap at all our expensive wooden items and ALL of them have been damaged either by rubbing or by grease stains that we cannot remove from the wood. Two lamps are broken, a chair is broken, a book shelf is broken and every bed frame and bookcase has deep grease stains on it. We were so puzzled unpacking the truck - for some reason, our couch pillows were wrapped carefully in moving blankets but our wooden standing lap was just thrown in the truck (and was broken). Our winter jackets (which easily could have been put in a suitcase) were carefully packed in a wardrobe box but our fancy dress clothes were scrunched in boxes. It was as if they had no common sense. All of my husbands suits, dress shirts and dress pants were literally thrown into a box and arrived completely crumpled AND my husbands best suit and my WEDDING DRESS were in a heap on the bottom of a box with full bag full of the bathroom trash on top! Maybe my bad, but I didn't realize that I would have to remove the trash from the house prior to the movers arriving because if I didn't the movers might pack it (on top of my wedding dress, no less). I mean, it was pretty obviously trash. Worst of all, I contacted Brian after we arrived here to tell him about the condition of our items and ask for compensation. He never responded. I give Riteway one star because they did return one day after our move to repair the three stairs that they totally destroyed when dropping my desk down the stairs (!!). Although the repair job was not as high quality as we would have liked, they were efficient and kind about it.

I flew into town to help my daughter move and I came across this company. Neal agreed to help us move. A few days before the move date, he asked if he could come an hour earlier and I agreed to that since it worked better for my schedule. He never showed up, left us high and dry, and left us screwed. He ended up totally ghosting me and blocked my calls and messages out of nowhere. I only found out when I texted him to see what time he would arrive on the day of the move. I was left scrambling to find a mover at the very last minute. This caused a huge financial burden since I had to find new flights, also. This company is unreliable and unprofessional. I do not recommend.

During the move, the driver hit and disconnected a cable line at our origin, knocking out service and creating additional stress while I was managing work on the backend. Accidents happen, but it set the tone. More concerning was how the bed itself was handled. The movers arrived without tools and used ours to disassemble it. When they reassembled the bed, they failed to properly tighten the screws, and one of the four critical support pieces that hold the bed frame together was missing entirely. I didn't discover this until a few weeks later, when the bed nearly collapsed. I have a baby and a dog at home, and the situation could have ended very badly. If a part was lost or damaged, we would have appreciated transparency. Instead, we were left with an unsafe setup and no communication. We tipped 20% at the time, assuming the job had been done properly, which makes the situation even more disappointing. I reached out to the company afterward and never received a response. Terrible...

The trio of movers were especially efficient in loading the furniture and boxes at my old place onto the truck. I really liked the portable closet they brought that made transporting nice clothes on hangers a breeze. The move was just a handful of miles -- from Berkeley to Oakland -- so the hope was to finish in the two hour minimum. We didn't quite make it, instead coming in at slightly over 2.5 hours - rounded up to 2.75. That was the only disappointment. I'll give them 4.7 or 4.8 stars.
