I've been wanting to try Rye Goods for some time and this week I went for brunch with a friend. What a cool location with lots of great outdoor seating in the heart of downtown Laguna Beach. It's obviously a favorite of many as this place was bustling the whole time we were enjoying our meal. I had the avocado toast and hands down the best yet!! My friend loved her rye scramble too. Staff were friendly and efficient - kept the line moving so there was not a lot of wait time. I'd definitely go back. The only negatives were that the shop smelled like BO and the lattes are way too small for the price. read more

First time here. We had a gift card that needed to be used. The young gals who worked the front line got slammed just as we got here, but they had smiles on their faces and the service was quick! I had a 1/2 baguette toasted and topped with a ricotta, parmesean cheese omelette/scramble. It was DELICIOUS! Light, fluffy. PERFECT. My husband had the BahnMi sandwich; it was fresh and delicious with a little heat from the fresh jalapeño! Excellent. The unsweetened hibiscus tea was very good as was the coffee. For pastries we tried the fruit scone loaded with fruits and quite large. We also bought a loaf of jalapeño cheddar sourdough bread to go. My husband tried the breakfast bun, and the thumbprint cookies, both delicious, flakey and not overly sweet. It was a lovely little coffee shop tucked away on Forest Avenue between the post office and the courtyard. We'll be back to use the balance of our gift card and do a REPEAT on those fabulous eggs! Awful customer service. I was excited to try this place with my friend before work. We got there at 7 AM, their posted opening time. The door was locked, so we waited outside in 45 degree weather while we could clearly see staff inside getting ready. We were completely fine waiting. A few minutes later, a woman approached the door, unlocked the latch, and walked away without saying a single word. Inside, she was rude, dismissive, and acted inconvenienced by our presence. I have never experienced service like this. If I were the owner, I would reevaluate who is representing the business. I understand mornings can be busy, but basic hospitality goes a long way. Left genuinely shocked and won't be returning based on this experience. read more

The place was packed when we finally found it. With all the construction going on, you'd miss this, since it's not readily visible from the street. The bakery layout is long and narrow so there's not a lot of room for egress. You are literally crammed in line to order food. The pastries were fresh, generously sized and tasted fresh. I was a little disappointed that they didn't offer to heat it up a bit prior to serving it. When I asked the cashier, she said that they have no way of doing that for their customers. The irony about that was my daughter ordered a toasted bagel sandwich, which arrived at our table once they assembled it, so they could have easily heated up our pastries, but they opted not to, likely because there were so many other people waiting in line to place their order. They gave us a number placard to put on our table while we waited for my daughter's bagel and my pistachio latte. They brought my daughter's bagel to her 10 minutes later, but didn't remember the latte. I was already done eating my pastry and I had to flag down one of the staff to ask again about my latte. He told me that they were really backed up and he would get it out to me as soon as possible. Five minutes later, he brought it to the table. It wasn't very well presented, and it was disappointing. The espresso was burnt, and you couldn't even taste the pistachio. It took so long to get it in the first place, that I didn't even bother asking them to remake it. I would've given this place a better rating if the staff were a little more responsive to offer better customer service and learn to work better under pressure when they have a mad rush of customers. I understand it was busy, but they were a little too hasty and they could have gone the extra mile to take a minute of their time and heat up the pastries. They had plenty of counter space to have a toaster oven on hand to do that. It didn't appear that they had enough people dedicated to barista duties to make a decent cup of coffee and make sure the coffee was served the same time they brought out the food. It's really disappointing for a place like this that has so much potential to be great. Please do better going forward for the sake of your customers. read more

I used to come here when they first opened and they had this most incredible oatmeal dish that they've since taken off their menu and I am baffled as to why. It was so creamy and flavorful and now it's gone and it's super disappointing. My husband and I came in yesterday to get two teas and a ginger molasses cookie which was really underwhelming. Although covered in sugar, it lacked flavor - I think it was missing salt tbh. The tea latte was also just okay. To top it off, the service tried to be warm and friendly but just seemed like a lot of new people who weren't really sure how to do anything so another guy had to keep taking over to fix orders. Over all, I feel like Rye has kind of gone down in quality sadly. It used to be a must-go place for me when we'd visit Laguna and now it's not really worth the trip read more

A cute bakery tucked behind the USPS store that offers a wide variety of baked goods and drinks! I ordered the morning sugar latte which I thought would have a caramelized sugar taste but was sadly let down as it tasted like a normal iced latte. Loved the pastries! Donut had a good amount of whipped chai filling that wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet. Sad that the meringue got smushed but it balanced well with the pumpkin filling! I wish I could say more...the bread and other goods here were pretty but a bit flat and lackluster. We ordered the focaccia, morning bun, egg sammy bagel, and seasonal drinks, like the pistachio rose latte and rose latte. Rye Goods promotes as organic and likely serves healthy options as a whole, but perhaps this depleted the flavor and overall pleasurable qualities of the food. The focaccia was yummy, but it was quite tough and I think it needed more olive oil and seasoning. I think if I made a nice pairing with freshly-baked with soup my opinion would change. The egg sammy was a bit plain, and I didn't appreciate the roasted potatoes inside (they were marketed as crispy, yet they weren't) because it felt like an added starch with hardly any salt. I could also see the vision with chive cream cheese, chili oil, and over medium egg inside - but the flavors seemed to blend into one taste, rather than complement each other. My favorite was the morning bun, which tasted homemade and had a good dough consistency. It was soft and fluffy on the inside, and well-spiced throughout. The coffees were good, yet I wish they had a fuller, maybe more concentrated flavor. The service people were pretty nice, and they brought out the food at a decent pace for it being a Saturday afternoon. There were also plenty of open seats inside, but for a sunny day, the patio tables and chairs outside made a great outside brunch spot. read more

Nasty attitude, poor signage indicating how to find them during construction -- I tried to provide a feedback as a fellow business owner and I was given a bizarre attitude. On walking in, I was told the place is shutting down. This whole experience was bizarre. I've been to other locations which are fantastic -- this place was awful, I'll never come back to this location. Do better. 2 stars instead of 1, are on account of the free pastries. Granted these are likely the expired end of day throw away options, I'll give them credit for at least attempting to make it "better". read more

Pretty small cafe but they have so many pastry/food options. Good amount of seating too and there's a parking lot nearby. Morning lattes were great (had a little bit of orange in them) and so was the bread pudding. I would say savory pastries could use a little bit more flavor/spice but still overall very good. The good: I got the breakfast yogurt parfait, an almond croissant, a granola cookie, a rosemary latte, and a Kringle. The almond croissant was very different than most I've had before. It had a denser and more layered texture with more spice flavors and less of the almond paste flavor. My daughter really enjoyed the granola chocolate chip cookie. I got this because our cashier seemed enthusiastic about it. He was friendly and had a contagious best friend type of energy. The $11 parfait was part of their breakfast menu (served until 11 am) and it had apples, Greek yogurt, flax seeds, a fruit compote and more. It was enjoyable and quite sweet. The appearance in color and the flavors were very autumnal. The latte art was great and the flavor was subtle. The interior is very modern, hip and simple. They sell sodas and jams that look organic, local or healthier. I liked their modern wooden table number sticks. The bad: The Kringle tasted as good as a Costco Danish. So, this isn't a bad thing necessarily because those are good but it was just a less interesting eat for me. When you walk inside from the back door the space to view the pastries is quite narrow. I wanted the seasonal cranberry vanilla latte but they ran out of cranberry syrup. The interesting: There's indoor and outdoor dining areas. The outdoor areas are both in the front and back alley space. I thought its discrete location sandwiched between a few other shops was cute and quaint. read more

The bread and desserts here are fantastic! We enjoyed the sesame loaf immensely as well as their pastries. Service was friendly and very helpful. The store is beautiful. The prices are a bit high, but considering the quality and care they put into each item. it is well worth the splurge. One of my favorite bakeries in Orange County, highly recommended. read more

Bread, pastries, coffee. How could I resist? For my afternoon snack, I ordered a cappuccino. But that was not all... Cappuccino - A potent pull, cut with some nice foamy milk. Strong but not burnt with the right amount of warm milk. Really good. Cheese and Chive Scone - This savory scone is sinful. If I lived in the area and if these weren't $7 each, I would be downing these like a bowler does pins. Eat them there, or take it home and pop it in the toaster oven for a quick minute and a pat of butter so that I would not get cotton ball mouth. Cheesy, chivy goodness in its slightly bricky dough form. Jalapeno Cheddar Loaf - Their loaves are grain heavy, dense but with plenty of airy give. I sliced them at home, placed them in the toaster and liberally applied butter, which accentuated the cheese flavor. The bread is strong enough for any sandwich or great just by itself. Loved it. The cafe itself is very bright and airy with white walls and a front and back entrance. They make various pastries like croissants, coffee cakes, banana bread, morning buns, cookies, focaccia, various bread loaves and sandwiches. The workers here are really friendly. They had no probably explaining to me what their favorite items were and why. I can see why Rye has had all the hype the past few years, because it's deserved. There was quite a long line but they have it pretty well figured out how to get things to roll smoothly so we didn't wait too lon g. We were lucky to grab a just vacated outside table. There is not a lot of them. My latte was very good, but not perfect, just a tad too milky. My seasonal sandwich was pretty much a French roll with a tiny bit of lettuce and a hunk of cheese inside. Definitely not worth $14 for basically a couple pieces of bread. It's not really a sandwich, more of a bread tasting with small embellishments. The taste was pretty much what I expected: Bread. If you want a real sandwich full of real ingredients that match or exceed the bread quantity, you will need to go elsewhere. This is not a serving for the hungry. The avocado toast by contrast was excellent, a generous amount of sliced avocado with innovative seasoning on a nicely toasted slice. read more

Sorry, but I find it outrageous that Rye Goods charges US$8 for a sourdough baguette. I live in Hong Kong and can buy the same in an artisan bakery for HK$25 or just US$3.25. A good cup of freshly brewed coffee on the other hand is the same price as in Hong Kong. How can you justify charging such high prices for bread? How can the price of flour be so high? For $50 that was an overpriced, disappointing and poor tasting pie that was for our Christmas Eve dinner, that we unfortunately threw half of it away. Not worth it! I ordered 3 different dishes from their breakfast & lunch menu, as well as 3 different pastries. As much as I wanted to love everything, I was absolutely shocked by how dry every single pastry item was. :-( I could barely finish the apple cider donut and two varieties of croissants because of how dry and stale they were. I'm talking rock hard. Was so confused! On the positive side, the butternut squash soup, grilled cheese and breakfast egg dishes were delicious and great for Fall, but as a bakery, I could not get over how poorly the baked goods tasted. My mother and I had a very simple and great lunch here. We both ordered the grilled cheese sandwich, which is white cheddar cheese, pesto and squash on a brioche. It's a very indulgent, delicious sandwich and it was plenty of food. All the ingredients meshed perfectly and in a unique way. It's the first time I've had grilled cheese, squash and pesto together and surprisingly it really works. We also had their coffee, which was also very good. We sat outside in the courtyard which had a very pleasant and chilled vibe. The staff are super friendly and help create a relaxing mood. I looked at dishes some other diners were eating and they all looked tasty. I'll certainly be back to try some more. read more
