Went to SKY for brunch with a reservation and was a great experience overall. Warning: Parking is a nightmare, so come a little before the reservation so you can find a spot (street parking). Also the restaurant doesn't have much signage so it's a little difficult to find the entrance. See picture below for what is actually the front door. Pretty reasonable at $29 pp and you get to choose one item from each column of the menu. They also bring out some complimentary pastries to start which were actually fantastic. The ambiance is pretty nice, industrial look 1) mushroom with goat cheese dish: this was pretty tasty, has a vinegar taste but the goat cheese and herbs help cut it down for a nice balanced dish 2) beef noodle soup: good flavor, noodles seem fresh, beef was super tender, my only thing is maybe a touch more salt would have improved the depth 3) short rib; really tender pieces of meat with a crunchy exterior, served with some nicely fried potatoes and an egg, very good For $29 it exceeded expectations and I would definitely return! read more

Higher end cuisine than I'd expected in Pilsen. You've got to admit, the neighborhood is changing, and hip restaurants are not rare there these days. We had good service, excellent wine available, and we made some really great choices. Nearly everything we ordered was excellent in our group of five. Glad we did the shared plates approach. The cornbread madeleines were so delicious, we ordered some to take home for coffee time the next morning. Another highlight was a mushroom dish. All of the vegetables focused selections were excellent. Our beef and fish choices were fine, but not as impressive. I wasn't a fan of the truffle oil dessert, but honestly it reminded me that my palate isn't as sophisticated as some others' are. What I expected was different than what we received. I tried it anyway, and it was too much umami and charred/burnt flavors. It tasted like it looked, so I know it was me, not the kitchen. We'd ordered several other desserts, and I loved all the others. I was more disappointed in myself that I didn't like it. Good decor, fits in well with the intended vibe. We found it somewhat noisy; perhaps if the (cool) music was turned down by half, it would be more conducive to friendly conversation. Lighting was a bit dim but not bad. Came here for Sunday brunch. Overall a good experience. The brunch included 3 courses for $29. Except for the second course, we ordered different items to be able to try more. Each dish had good flavors. I really enjoyed the mushroom salad in combo with the goat cheese. The sauce with the charred broccoli was great, though I wish there were more than 4 pieces of broccoli. The bacon and egg fried rice was literally just that, but still enjoyable. The short rib and potato hash probably topped the fried chicken. I assume due to the slowness of service, they gave us a sampler of little treats to enjoy while we waited. Each one was tasty in their own way. As for drinks, we had a beer and a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary didn't have any rim salt and was pretty small for $8. Considering it was brunch, they should put a little more effort into the Bloody. read more

Honestly quite underwhelmed by the food. The one item I would recommend were the cornbread madeleines, those were delicious. Korean rice noodles lacked flavor, the black truffle croquettes were on the salty overbearing side, and the foie gras bibimbop was also a bit flavorless. The Foie gras didn't really add anything. I would have preferred an egg instead (and it made the whole thing too oily). Some of the staff were pretentious and just kind of strange as well (though our server was lovely). Prices were quite high compared to other things you can get in the area and the city in general. Overall S.K.Y. came off as thinking very highly of itself and rubbed me the wrong way throughout the evening unfortunately. read more

I will say the short rib hash was a bit salty for me and the bibimbap isn't anything special, so I'd get something else over the bibimbap next time. First off, my partner and I have been here many times over the past two years. I don't write many reviews but my latest visit led me to share this. S.K.Y seems to have it all at a glance, good bar, ambiance, good food, and a well considered wine menu. Where it begins to crack is the service. There is a tangible feeling of anxiety, some sort of pressure to leave as soon as possible (mind you, most nights we've been are relatively quiet). I don't think it's the waiters fault as much as the pressure from management, it's as if they are trained to make an otherwise relaxing experience uncomfortable and rushed. Since I am in the neighborhood, I REALLY want S.K.Y to work. But for whatever reason, we are always doing a cost benefit analysis before going. And nine times out of ten, we end up going somewhere else. read more

This place deserves a Michelin star or two! We live so far away, but yet we can't stay away. They have a new American cuisine with Asian flair, that is truly revolutionary. Every dish is a statement where the contrast of textures and a perfect balance of flavors is achieved. Every dish has a moth watering presentation! This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The food is so precise and upscale but overall the vibe of the restaurant is semi-casual and very approachable rather than pretentious. We shared a bunch of stuff as a group of 4 and literally everything we had was delicious. Everything here was so so good. We got the truffle croquettes to start and they were delicious! Loved every bite of it. Incredibly crispy on the outside and creamy and flavorful on the inside. The truffle wasn't super overpowering which I was a little afraid about prior to ordering, but it was the perfect amount in every bite. For entrees we got the prime beef short rib and the Mediterranean sea bass. Two very different dishes but both very good. The short rib was packed full of flavor. It was coated in peppercorn and served with Asian pear and long beans. Super savory and very much has an Asian flair to it. The sea bass was much lighter, served with a lemon garlic jus over a bed of spinach. I actually liked this dish better because I was able to taste more of the inherent flavor of the fish. And I'm also a sucker for spinach (literally don't know why). The fish was also so tender. Everyone was super friendly and it was a great ambiance. Lights were dim, music was not overly loud. S.K.Y.'s prices are s.k.y. high for food that is merely good, as a whole, and not outstanding (sorry, it had to be done, and if I scrolled through the reviews I'm sure I'd see that it already has been). This is as a whole, not individually, because taken dish by dish, there are some outstanding dishes. Namely, the appetizers. The entrees are kind of whatever (the short rib was one-note and sinewy, the sea bass had delicious skin but nothing else was flavorful) but the appetizers are excellent. The lobster dumplings explode with so much lobstery flavor that you'll swear you're standing on a pier in Maine or something. And the warm mushroom salad - traipsing through the undergrowth of a green forest. The croquettes simply vanish in a wisp of flavored air in your mouth (this is a good thing!) As for the vegetable sides, they're... fine. (Side note: this may be a pet peeve of only mine but I've gotta say it: I wish servers would stop asking how my meal is 15 seconds after it's been delivered when the can clearly see I haven't touched it yet. This is my second time here for brunch and the creativity with the food has kept me coming back. It feels almost like a hidden gem with its hidden, unassuming outside! Every vegetable dish I've tried here has been delicious. I love how well seasoned they are, and they pair perfectly with the herbs that garnish. SKY's the limit with this place! We called last minute to get reservations on a Thursday night at around 7:45 PM and we were delightfully surprised that they were able to fit us in to a four seating table for two. The service was friendly, informational and patient (we couldn't stop talking to take a moment to read the menu and order, lol). Our server, G gave service with a smile. A friend of mine recommended the warm mushroom salad which did not disappoint! We also had the Hamachi sashimi, Maine lobster dumpling and the Seabass - all were an explosion of flavors And textures in every single bite! My handsome date does not favor mushrooms, but he absolutely loved every single bite of the Hen of Woods Mushroom topped with goat cheese, thin slices of red chili pepper and Chunks of fresh avocado. This type of mushroom has a frilly, almost floret-like features which really envelopes all of the herbs and savory dressing tossed in. The main lobster dumplings were a bit dry. The Hamachi sashimi was so delicately melt-in-your-mouth experience! Enhance with the popping flavors of the Black sesame Ponzo sauce colorfully laid across the plate. The Seabass was delicious, but very surprised with the portions/size of the fish. I was expecting the Seabass to be thicker and larger portion. It had a nice crusty top, laid on a bed of sautéed spinach. Out of all the dishes, the mushroom salad and the hamachi sashimi are a MUST TRY! The vibe of the restaurant was very cool and chic with the diversity of guests. The bathroom is clean and stylish. Definitely great place to bring a Date. We had such a lovely experience and were the last people standing. We had such a great time eating and talking and were not rushed out the door. Will definitely come back! The servers were delightful and helpful throughout the evening (although there a few rounds of checking in then not doing what we requested, was fixed though and we had a laugh about it). Finally got around to trying S.K.Y. for a Friday night date night and very glad I did. Lobster dumplings were probably the best thing I've eaten in months and the fried chicken with creamed corn and hot sauce had me wanting to lick the plate. The cornbread madeleines also fantastic. Other dishes didn't hit quite as hard, the sashimi was bright and interesting but the sauce to fish ratio was a little too high to make it memorable and the butternut squash was bright and light but wouldn't order again. Service from the beginning was very good. We hadn't made a reservation and wanted a regular table so the they took a few minutes to "move some things around" and we got a table! Throughout the meal, servers were informative and on top of changing out our plates. The appetizers came out VERY fast. To make it simple, I'll say you can't go wrong with the any of the items we ordered but my personal favorites were: lobster dumplings, seared diver scallops, pork chop katsu, and all the desserts. Sunday brunch. I became totally confused by the options of "shared plates". I gave up and allowed my wife to order. We started with the tiered pastry option. The pastry creations are very unique and delicious. The croissants are wonderful but of note: the gouchjung cheese danish is a delightful revelation. The spice in this danish continues to please, long after digestion. Amazing pastry creations. After the pastry tier, we selected the marinated (Persian) cucumber salad. Presented in refreshing thick slices lightly seasoned with soy. Our main shared dishes were excellent brunch bowls: short rib hash (the short rib a tad dry) and bibimbap bacon & egg, which I could eat for breakfast daily. Can't tell you about the drinks because on this Sunday, the bartender decided not to come to work, we were told. The space is minimalist with cold unadorned walls juxtaposed by gorgeous bathrooms, which my dah'ter called the best of Chicago. Definitely a hip place to have a fun brunch. The initials S.K.Y. belong to Chef Gillanders' wife, Seon Kyung Yuk, after whom the restaurant is named. Gillanders had always envisioned opening his first restaurant in his hometown of Los Angeles, CA. But during Gillanders' tenure at Intro in Chicago, which served as the testing ground for his own restaurant concept, the couple discovered their affinity for Chicago and decided it was home-- and the future home of S.K.Y. After a year and a half as Chef/Partner at Intro, Gillanders was ready to realize his dream of opening his own restaurant. He and his wife toured over 20 restaurant spaces all over the city when they finally found the perfect location for S.K.Y. in Pilsen, Chicago. The robust arts culture and community-feel of the neighborhood fully embodies the philosophy of their breakout restaurant concept. The symbol of the shattered antique spoon represents S.K.Y.'s philosophy of just that: a classic spoon, shattered to depict a modern, innovative perspective. We had no idea the place is hidden in a non descript bldg. there is corrugated glass by the bathroom with varying colors painted there. The music is cool but you can hear one another and have a wonderful conversation at the same time. We had Diego as our waiter and he recommended a mimosa to start- many types - grapefruit, lemon, and orange. We opted for the lemon mimosa and it was delicious. We ordered lobster dumplings to split which were delicious. We tried the Japanese Caesar salad- with shortage dressing, nori and bottarga (totally delicious),Warm Maiitake Mushrooms lemon vinaigrette and goat cheese (loved) and Marinated Cucumber Salad garlic-soy, chili oil and sesame salt (yum).Follows by Garlic Beef Noodles with crispy chili oil and scallions (love), Spicy Deviled Eggs sambal and crispy bacon, Truffle Butter Toastie fried egg and whipped cheddar and Short Rib & Potato Hash kalbi jus with crunchy onions. Run, don't walk to S.K.Y. this is one of the best meals I've had in Chicago, perhaps the best. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious, and the service is really wonderful as well. There are a selection of cocktails and a wine list with all sorts of wines I didn't good night, and the waiter brought by two wines to taste just based on the words "bright and not sweet," which were perfect. The meal. Each dish I had was beautifully curated, and was an innovative and surprising creation with flavors that danced. I truly believe that everything on the menu is likely as spectacular as what I had,,which included the lobster dumplings, the cornbread, the bi bim bap, the warm mushroom salad, the duck confit. I loved the diverse options on the menu! I also thought the interior was well decorated and set a nice moody dinner. This would be a great date place. The food was pretty solid. Starter portions are pretty small so be aware of that though. I though the items on the menu were pretty innovative. I'd definitely recommend the fried chicken. It somehow tastes... healthier? Than typical fried chicken I've had. The sauce paired with it well too. My favorite dish was probably the bibimbap but I don't think the foie gras flavor is exceptionally strong, so that's one item that could be improved! read more

Recently, I was going through my list of saved restaurants and saw that I bookmarked S.K.Y. quite a while. I finally decided to check it out last weekend and overall was pretty satisfied with my brunch experience! Upon being seated, we were served a complimentary set of 3 small bites: savory cornbread madeleines, bombolinis (donut hole), and some other crispy fried dough item. These were all very good and really was a nice start to the meal. After eating all 3 of these small bites, I did not feel that any of them were overly sweet and I enjoyed that the madeleine was more on the savory side. For their brunch, there was the option of choosing 3 courses for $34 which is a pretty good deal. I opted for this with a friend so we got to try 6 dishes total. In addition, we ordered a couple items from the a la carte menu. Warm Maiitake Mushrooms: The mushrooms were delightfully crisp towards the caps but also still tender and juicy at the stems. The sauce was light with a hint of sourness, but the creaminess of the avocado and goat cheese helped to balance it out. This was an excellent dish in my opinion. Japanese Caesar Salad: A refreshing salad with a hint of Asian flavors and textures. The addition of the nori (seaweed) was nice and I liked the extra crunch of the crispy rice (?) balls in it. Spicy Deviled Eggs: Nothing special, but I was craving deviled eggs and this did the trick. The bacon bits on top were a nice bonus. If you like deviled eggs, this is a safe bet. Bacon and Egg Fried Rice: Again, nothing special. The rice was on the drier side, which I actually enjoyed; however, you can safely skip ordering this dish. Coconut Buttermilk Pancakes: While there are only 2 pancakes in this course, don't be fooled because they are actually quite filling. I love pancakes but I did feel that these pancakes were a bit too sweet for my liking. The pancakes themselves had already soaked up the maple syrup and on top of that, the sweet coconut shavings were a bit too much. Short Rib & Potato Hash: This savory course had many delicious elements from the tender short rib to the crispy onions and potatoes. The kalbi jus was packed with flavor and I found myself dipping the potatoes into the sauce to make sure that each and every potato was covered before eating them. Black Truffle Croquettes (a la carte): They were nice and crispy on the outside and the strong aromas of truffle and aged cheddar filled the air as you bit into them. I liked this dish as an add-on; however, if you are eating the 3-course brunch option, you might feel pretty full even with just one item added on from the a la carte menu. Overall, I enjoyed most of the dishes at S.K.Y. and I liked that you had opportunity to try different kinds of dishes without feeling like you over-ordered (the portions were appropriately sized). I came here for my birthday dinner. We ordered the black truffle croquettes, homemade burrata cheese, Maine lobster dumplings, Rohan duck confit, Mediterranean sea bass, SKY fried chicken, braised beef short rib, and foie gras bibimbap. The amuse bouche was edamame purée on a rice paper cracker. The croquettes were pretty tasty! The burrata cheese dish was decent but not my favorite. I personally wasn't a big fan of the dumplings but the rest of my family enjoyed them. One of my favorite dishes was the Rohan duck confit - the meat was tender and I thought the rhubarb and glaze paired well with the duck. For the main dishes: the Mediterranean Sea bass was pretty good and the lemon garlic jus paired well with the fish. The chicken had unique breading and was decent as well. The short rib was really tender. The foie gras bibimbap was just ok and I couldn't really taste any foie gras at all, so it didn't feel worth it. For dessert, we got the cheesecake brûlée. I thought this was delicious and the pairing with black sesame and passion fruit worked well together. They put a candle on the plate also since it was my birthday which was nice. Overall, I wasn't blown away by anything but everything was decent. We actually wanted to come here because we had been to Chef Gillanders's other restaurants, Apolonia and enjoyed it. After dining at both, I definitely prefer Apolonia. I'm taking off a star because of how long the meal took and how slow the service was. We made a reservation and still had to wait over 30 minutes for our table. We were at the restaurant for 3-4 hours in total. I would've been more ok with this if the food was staggered more, but the vast majority of this was just us sitting there and waiting. We said we were ready to order and the waiter walked away and didn't return for 20+ minutes. The food came out in 2 waves so we waited for a long time in between. We were debating if we should even order dessert because we guessed we would be stuck there for another hour at that point given our previous service experience. We ultimately decided to since it was my birthday, but similar to before after we said we wanted to get dessert it took another 20+ minutes to get the dessert menu. I don't know if it was just an off day but we spent so much time waiting that I kind of wish I spent my birthday somewhere else instead. read more

Industrial chic decor, avant-garde fusion menu, but you knew that already so what's makes them standout other than the open kitchen occasionally cheering every time they deliver an order I give them props for taking risk. You can see the effort and care into every dish, presented with great aplomb at the table. One needs a Yin to appreciate the Yang. Unfortunately all our entrees were overpowered with seasoning. They were the- foie gras bibimbap, lamb and pork belly and even the Salmon. I can taste the intensity of the resulting flavors but it's not for me. My son did really like the lamb and pork belly though. The appetizers of duck confit and Lobster dumplings we're good. Considering the overall all experience pricing was fair. First off, I have to say, parking around this area is pretty difficult to find (and this is coming from someone who lives in NYC). It took over half an hour to find parking, and so I called SKY, but it was hard to reach anyone to let them know I was coming late. However, when we got there, the food was pretty good. Lobster dumplings - pretty much amazing, and would highly recommend. The flavor was bold and delicious! SKY fried chicken - was a 5/5 for sure!!! Maybe dare I say it the best fried chicken dish at a nice restaurant I've ever had! The corn around it was sweet and flavorful, and the chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, perfectly cooked. It had the perfect balance of sugar, salt, spice, and texture. It was so good that my sister, who kept saying she was full, also kept eating my dish! Other things I sampled from my family: seabass, foie gras bibimbap, and braised beef short rib. Out of those, the bibimbap was the one I would recommend the most only because it was unique. The other 2 dishes were pretty standard. Lastly, I thought it was kind of strange that they didn't do anything for birthdays (was celebrating my sister's birthday), but of course not a big deal. Was the place good? Yes. Loved the neighborhood vibe of this place. Service was great! Food, wine list and cocktails were all good especially for the price. The cornbread Madeline's were my favorite. I think it would make a great place to go with a group as it's slightly more upscale without breaking the bank. read more

Both delicious and visually appealing food! The food here is experimental in many ways but our dinner felt like familiar and comforting! There isn't a lot of identification of the restaurant name out front on walking in so take note of that! We started out with a burrata which was so good. The variety of vegetables it came with brought a unique mix of spicy, sweet, and pickled tastes. We shared the crispy potatoes which were freshly seasoned and the creamy black truffle sauce it came with was a spike of bold flavor. We had the sea bass and short rib for our entrees. The sea bass had the lightest most delicate crust that added texture to the super soft bass underneath. The short rib had a spicy kick to it but pulled right apart. The dessert was the star of the show! The latte was strong but very cutely presented. The brûlée cheesecake was to die for, and the three whip creams, sorbets, and ice cream options on the side were so fun to try. The sorbet is bursting with flavor and I could eat ten pounds of just that on its own. Overall this definitely felt like more of a special occasion dinner for us but we loved it.
