Firstly, staff were amazing and accommodating. Atmosphere is good, but it was so dark it was difficult to read the menu. On to the food, very very salty ... three of our 4 dishes weren't great and for the price of our bill it would have been better to choose a more highly rated place. On top of that, it was my mom's birthday and my parents anniversary and not even an offer of a desert menu or a slice to celebrate like at most restaurants. Service was good, but the food was lacking. Had the hot wings, which tasted super strange... fishiest wings I've ever had. The steak was also really under seasoned and the Yorkshire puddings were thick, doughy and flat. Plating was poor and overall certainly not worth the money. We had gone to Glow Abbotsford before dinner and ended up finishing earlier than expected. Our dinner reservation wasn't for awhile so we decided to go to S+L instead. We ordered the Truffle Fries, East Coast Lobster Rolls, and the Fried Mac & Cheese Sticks for appetizers. I ordered the Top Sirloin as my entree, with the Lobster Mashed Potatoes and Crispy Local Brussel Sprouts as my two sides. I thought my steak was just okay. There wasn't anything wrong with it but I wasn't super impressed with it either. The sides and appetizers were good though! The Fried Mac & Cheese Sticks are a must-order.. so good! read more

Over priced small portions. Had the scallops (3pieces) and gnocchi (4piece), ordered the prawn tacos, send those back, got the crispy sushi bites that were so salty from soy sauce. And the waitress told us all the items to avoid on the menu. The managers came to apologies and said she couldn't wait for the new menu. I came here on a friday and was very impressed. The decor: the aesthetic was very american, trendy 'diner' ish the ambiance was very relaxed, the lights were dim, there were various booths and tables, including bar high tables and spots to sit at the bar. Giving you the option of both more relaxed drink experience or dine in experience. I did not notice a lot of younger people, the crowd did seem a bit more mature but it was very nice nonetheless. The service: very polite, fast, pleasant, checked in often ... the food: didn't have any because went there for drinks only, however the menu seemed pretty nice, had a lot of options and someone told me the lamb popsicles were very good. The drinks: I went straight for the coctails, I had whiskey smash, and some other whiskey one with maple syrp etc. the drinks were very good, presented well, and came in their appropriate glasses (a lot of spots will do all coctails in typical martini glasses which takes away from the experience) was a great little spot and I would def come again. read more

The service was wonderful and courteous. When I expressed that my dish seemed a bit odd with just a tiny bit of shriveled greens on the side, she Apollo's went to grab me a nice bowl of greens. When the South Surrey location opened I was highly impressed so maybe my hopes were just a bit too high to try S&L Kitchen & Bar in Abbotsford. What saved this rating was the service. The two ladies taking care of our 30 person group were fabulous and really deserved a better review for their efforts. Unfortunately the food dragged them down big time. Steak was flavourless. Might as well have been boiled. For a New York cut price point, I definitely expect better. The Brussel sprouts were so overly salty which was shocking considering the no-salt Steak. The mushroom ravioli a massive let down and the most flavourless Caesar salad I've even had. I can't explain the disappointment. They really need to step it up in the kitchen. Finally a place with a table on a Saturday morning! We had stopped in at two other places and told there was almost an hour wait. Because we all felt out tummies grumble, someone recommend we hit this place up as they had been here a few times. I'm glad we did. The staff here are very friendly and there's room for everyone. We got a nice big booth, coffee straight away, followed by mimosas (none for me thanks) that just happened to be on special for $3. We ordered pretty quick and the food didn't take long to get to us. There is great portions here but I was shocked to discover asking for bacon and sausage with my eggs as I can't eat potatoes or the toast cost me a whopping $6!!! I don't mind paying a bit extra but $6 for one breakfast sausage is a bit ridiculous. The meal was good and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the food, as did I but I just can't justify the lofty price tag. More restaurants need to be able to cater to restricted diets. Asking for no potatoes and toast wouldn't save me any money yet adding food I can eat costs me? Offer a substitution for some of the cost at least. Wasted food and extra cost to the customer is really silly. All in all I paid over $25 for coffee, bacon, sausage and 2 eggs :/ read more

We had a fantastic experience at S+L. We managed to reserve an outdoor table and enjoy the sunshine. Our servers where fanatastic. We had one server who was training another and the trainee seemed like she was already very well versed in the menu and the options. She told us it was only her 4th day and she did great. When we left the General Manager introduced herself to us and shook our hands. Asked us a few about ourselves and welcomed us back. As someone who spent years being in customer service and technical support this was first class. Well done! read more

My hopes were high for my first S+L experience because it's a Joseph Richards joint and typically the organization turns out restaurants that do things well. Sadly, even with years of experience competing in Vancouver where guest expectations are high, the S+L in Abbotsford didn't even compete with IHOP. The hostess seated us fast, but that's where speedy service stopped. They seemed to be frustrated or put out that with the twenty-plus open tables, we had to ask for a table with chairs rather than a booth because we had people with mobility issues joining us. There were only about six tables seated and I counted at least four staff in the front of house. I had a lot of time to count, unfortunately. The table next to us got seated ten minutes after us, and was served first. The staff was awkward and talked over top of each other. It was hard to feel welcome when staff didn't seem happy to be there, or happy we were there. When they brought menus, they didn't bring brunch menus despite us being there during the well advertised (there's even a sandwich board outside) brunch focused Sunday morning. We made a reservation for brunch specifically. I thought it was odd the menu didn't say anything about brunch, until I saw them bring brunch menus to other tables. We finally asked for them and they were nice enough to include us even though they seemed surprised we'd be interested in brunch. Sadly I wish I hadn't been. The menu items looked fantastic! With so much staff, I expected that we'd have pretty quick service. But up until the point the food finished arriving, it took forever for everything and it felt like no one knew who was responsible for our table. I've had more dialogue with McDonalds staff at the order counter. When they brought out the first plate of four, it came five minutes before bring the next two plates. The fourth plate arrived five minutes after that... After our food was served they were all over us, refilling coffee multiple times and more than one staff asked if we needed anything. Do we really have to teach S+L to bring out the meals at the same time? Why did one server bring one plate, then two plates, then another single plate instead of getting one of the other staff to help in one trip?! And why was it so long between each deliver of food? We came to eat together, not in shifts and its not kosher to dig into a meal while other people are still waiting. It all seemed status quo. We were really excited to try some cool brunch, like their Strawberry Cheese Cake French Toast battered in corn flakes. One of us asked for syrup for it. The server made a point of telling us that "syrup doesn't come with it, but I'll go get you some anyway..." like asking for syrup for French Toast was somehow an odd request that required passive aggressive commentary. In the end, the French Toast was just not good, and tasted like they fried it in the same oil they fry fish in. Neither was the odd tasting brown butter hollandaise with the poached eggs just tasted off, burnt, or something and sort of gritty. The poached eggs were cooked unevenly with one underdone and one medium poached. The best parts of the breakfast was the average sourdough toast and the fried potato hash browns. I get restaurants are having a hard time staffing due to the fact they offer tough jobs for poor pay. And I get that servers have a rough job that is often full of nasty people giving them crap. But that wasn't this restaurant today. They had more than enough staff, not a lot of guests, and they had only been open an hour or so. The servers behaved like they were coming off a 12 hour shift in a truck stop full of Donald Trump clones; confused and shell shocked. One of our people decided to politely let the server know that the French toast was not very palatable. We didn't want a refund or anything. We had already paid, content with chalking it up to a bad experience. Saying something was intended to be feedback they could use so that other guests would have a better meal. It would've been nice had the server been gracious about it. But all she said was that we should've told her sooner so she could bring her something else. And then followed it up with, "well I guess next time you'll know what not to order..." Next time? Pft. No thanks. There are a lot of restaurants in Abby with good service to choose from. read more

We had dinner here last night with friends. It is a lovely restaurant and if the noise level wasn't so high the dining experience would be much more enjoyable. We were there on Sunday evening and although it wasn't too busy the decibel level was still annoying. We had to talk very loudly in order to converse with our friends. Our server Patrick was very good at the beginning of the evening but the service seemed to slacken off towards the end of the meal as we had to track him down to get our bill and pay. For appetizers our friend had the Lobster roll and we shared an order of calamari. Our friend said the lobster roll was excellent. We received a huge order of calamari and it was tender, nicely seasoned and very tasty. It was served with a very small amount of delicious house made tzatziki sauce (should have had more sauce), bell peppers, red onions and fried chick peas. For entrees my husband had the Master chicken. It was one of the best fried chicken meals that I have had. It was so nicely seasoned and the meat was moist and had so much flavour. It came with bacon cream corn and mashed potatoes. The sides were somewhat boring and did not have much flavour. I ordered the filet and there was a choice of 2 sides. Unfortunately I picked bacon cream corn and mashed potatoes. The filet was cooked rare as I had ordered it but it did not have much taste. It could have really used seasoning of some sort on it. I would not order a steak here again. Our friends both ordered the prawn and lobster linguine and while they enjoyed their meal they said that it did not measure up to the same dish that they had at a competitor's restaurant. We enjoyed the evening with our friends but we did find it too noisy for a nice visit and conversation. I would give it another try because the chicken was really exceptional. We were in Abbotsford overnight on Sunday June 30 and the Coast Hotel staff recommended S & L as we were craving steak for dinner. This had to be the best meal we have had in years. We started with a Kale Caesar Salad that was fantastic, we could not figure out what the great tasting crunchy bits were and had to ask our waitress . They are fried capers. Then we both had the Filet, the best tasting steak I think I have ever had. Our waitress was Katie and she was great, kept our water full and came back a couple minute after salad was served and asked if all was fine, and again after steak arrived. I live in Vancouver but was in the area and my gf wanted to give this place a try. First impressions were great, plenty of parking and you walk into a beautiful foyer. The restaurant has excellent decor and is brighter than a lot of chains giving it a more welcoming feel. This was a Monday night (around 10PM) and it was fairly dead. Perhaps less than 20 guests in total. We were seated in our booth and served by the bartender who would step out of the bar to check up on us every now and then. We ordered the late night happy hour specials and everyone in my party of 4 was pleased with the drinks. Good wine, mules, and beer. When the food came, things took a bit of a turn. The prices for the happy hour specials were great but nothing tasted good. The crispy sushi rice is a disjointed cracker with some fish on top. Fried mac and cheese sticks were bland and served with a tomato sauce that tasted off. Truffle fries for $4 were actually decent though. We also ordered the crispy Brussels which I felt were a bit overcooked and bitter. For entrees we split two of the lobster & prawn burgers between the four of us. The patty was okay but the burger as a whole was terrible due to the bacon that is way too salty. We all picked out the bacon and I had the burger switched with the Chicken & Brie sandwich. Unfortunately, it was the same. The brie was once again way too salty. The prosciutto was a very thick cut and incredibly tough to chew. So much so that it was hard to cut with a steak knife. Both of these sandwiches were awful and at $16/19 you can do a lot better elsewhere. This certainly isn't Top Chef material and I'd frankly be embarrassed to have my name on the menu. You can do better at any other chain and get better service/prices as well. I'm not sure if they were friends of the bartender/server but he spent most of his evening chatting up the bar and making their drinks. I couldn't believe we had to dine in filth. Mothers Day (we were seated at our reserved table so it was prepared in advance). The floor was covered in french fries and leftover food from previous guests and the table was sticky. Lost our appetite. We had to ask the server to wipe the table as my mom's arms were sticking to the table. The server continued to step on the french fries and not once had it cleaned up. No manager to be found. Today was a big day for restaurants and pubs as most holidays are, we had some of the best service to date at the Abbotsford location visiting for Father's Day. We were so happy to see happy hour was even happening and with such a big menu too. We all (4 of us) got exactly what we wanted and cooked to perfection. Had a hard time finding the "ghost restaurant" and even the S&L staff were unaware of the "chicken" coming out of their kitchen. On work trip from California. Awesome vibe and the service behind the bar was phenomenal! Drinks were incredible; had myself a Canadian Old Fashion which was a great new taste for me as I'm a bit of old fashion fiend. Kid behind the bar, Derek I believe, formerly from the states, had great energy and was filling me in on the area. He made such a good old fashion! We ate here on November 1st and everyone in my group keeps talking about how good the meal could have been if we'd had another server. It started great but after taking outr order our server spent most of her time talking to the chefs or was nowhere to be seen. First time (and probably last) time here. Was told that they don't have any tables but we can grab a seat at the bar. Not a problem! Our server let us know happy hour was ending soon so we put some orders in. This is when it went south. The people next to us who were seated about 15 minutes after us got the SAME appies before us!!! When we asked why we were told "because they ordered separately"....if I knew this was the policy I would've ordered separately. We also ordered our main at the same time as the appies and it took them 40 MINUTES to bring out a single burger and fries on a Wednesday. I have no clue what was going on but that's just crazy. My first visit to this location. A Sunday night, early evening. Decor is good, service was excellent. The meals we had were very good as were the appetizers. Nothing bad to say, based on this experience would visit again. Price was reasonable. I like good beer, but don't enjoy craft beer that I ha e no idea what it is. It would be nice to see some "good beer" on tap rather than just bud or coors, or having to take chance with a craft beer you don't know. read more

I'm really a big fan of the S&L here in Abbotsford and haven't had a meal there yet that wasn't top shelf. Yes it's a chain, and yes the service isn't always great, and yes it's a long wait if you don't make reservations, but the food is good quality and the menu choices are pretty solid. I'm a sucker for the lobster chowder and have ordered it every time that I've been there, and never been disappointed. Big chunks of lobster, lots of soft veggies, and a really tasty broth. My entree of choice is the Harvest Chicken and it's definitely a "big appetite" meal. Two good-sized pieces of chicken, a serving of gnocchi, carrot puree, mushrooms, and other fun extras and I'm moving the belt down a notch when it's all said & done. The ambience is what it is, and the "knife club" seems a little pretentious - having seen some of the names on the knives - but if that's what helps you sleep at night then good for you. read more

Came here for a work lunch. We had a group of 8, which you would figure would be manageable. Apparently not. We got there around noon and didn't get our food until almost one. I ordered Diet Pepsi and when I was brought a refill, I was 99% certain that it was not diet. However, our server didn't give me a chance to ask for a new one because every time she came by she barely gave us a chance to speak. She also apparently didn't notice that my drink sat in front of me for approximately 40 minutes untouched. I would normally expect a server to be aware of that kind of thing and ask if something is wrong. When the food finally arrived, my steak and sides were barely lukewarm. I ate them anyway because that's what you have to do when you wait 40 minutes for your lunch. Everything tasted fine but was cold. I had been to this location twice previously and everything was been spotty on the previous visits as well (the food and the service). Their lobster-prawn eggs benedict was the most thoroughly disappointing brunch of my life. The lobster-prawn patty was rubbery and the whole dish was cold. We ordered their gluten free Benny and waited 20 minutes and the waiter came out and said that it was going to be a while longer because they had to go and buy some gluten free buns.
