We first tried S+M Vegan last year at Eli's Mile High Club during their weekly Tuesday pop-ups and have been loyal customers ever since. With the Covid-19 events, they've switched over to weekly meal pickups in Oakland -- you can preorder Wednesday and pick up on Friday. Here is a review from their last pop-up in March: Tahu Goreng (Friend Tofu + Tamarind-Peanut Sauce + Scallions + Pickled Chilies + Crunchy Veggies) - The most addicting appetizer tofu dish I have ever had. I ordered this to share with my husband and could barely even give him one bite of it because I wanted it all for myself! It's the perfect balance of spiciness and fermentation funk. Combo Sambal Mee (Fresh Flat Rice Noodles + Chewy Wheat Noodles Stir Fried with Sambal Belacan + Yuba + Tofu Puffs + Veggies + Wonton Chips + Lime) - I'm obsessed with this noodle dish. I've had a few of S+M Vegan noodle plates in the past, but this one blows the others out of the water. The toppings/proteins are plentiful and your mouth will have a party with all the different textures in every bite. You'll definitely want to pay extra for the vegan cheese because when has cheese ever let you down. Shaobing Sandwich #25 (Banana Leaf Grilled Coconut and Spice Seitan + Sambal Belacan + Cilantro + Onion + Cucumber + Fresh Baked Sesame Crusted Flatbread) - This is a big boy sandwich. You'll definitely need a knife to cut this in half because it is packed to the max full of seitan and toppings! If you've never had their freshly baked sesame bread, these sandwiches will turn you into a believer. You'll be coming back every week as we do for those sesame seed crumbs! Guide all your meat-loving friends towards their sandwiches. Pandancing In the Moonlight (Pandan + Coconut + Lime + Blanco Tequila) - Who can deny the pairing of pandan and coconut? I've had the opportunity to try Shane and Marie's delicious food at several pop-ups such as the Eat Real Festival, Baia Pasta on First Sundays at Jack London Square, Blind Tiger dinner series and most recently an early winter dinner and their food continues to amaze me! The early winter dinner I attended last Sunday was held at their cool loft in Oakland. It was a six course meal that focused on fresh produce of the season. Each course was so creative and beautifully plated. From black trumpet mousse, to celery butter toast, to brocoli confit to a dessert with parsnip whip - I kept saying wow, wow, wow throughout the whole meal! I loved it all and wanted more of the kabocha gnocchi! Shane and Marie are phenomenal chefs. I won't lie, I secretly laughed/snickered at vegan cuisine in the past. haha. But my palette has seen the vegan light, and I am a believer now. SM Vegan have changed my culinary views on vegan food. SM Vegan have an excellent philosophy on vegan cooking. They are not so much anti-meat, but they believe that there are more infinite/creative ways to prepare , and cook vegetables. After tasting their vegan mac n cheese (which btw was the best mac n cheese dish I've ever tasted), I was hooked. For a die hard meat-eater like myself, that dish blew my mind. I've had the chance to sample their other creations such as their vegan cream cheese, vegan mushroom pizza, and several dishes at their latest pop up. All their culinary creations burst with amazing flavor. I highly recommend them for all your vegan catering needs, and I would look out for all their future pop up dinners. read more

Nice! I returned to the Eat Real Festival for a second day (got my Yelp bottle opener, thank you very much). Like Hella Vegan Eats, they had a very limited selection for the event which was understandable, but a shame. I opted for the BBQ seitan slider. It was good, but not really to my taste, and the portion was a bit small, so I can't give it 5 stars. Still, I hope to try them some other time, since I hear great things. read more

I came back with an acquaintance. The woman who took our order remembered me even though I haven't been back for a month. I had to come because they had a Korean inspired menu. The Bulgogi Sandwich was more of a vegan bahn mi sandwich with a fusion of Vietamese and Korean flavors. On two slices of soft French bread was cilantro, basil, tea smoked tofu, bulgogi sietan, Gochujang sauce, and kimchi. It was really good and my favorite entree out of the menu options. The fried cauliflower came with a side of salad. It was spicy and had a thick coat of crispy batter. This was good for a one time try. The daikon salad was ok and decent for a side salad. The acquaintance shared his rice gnocchi with me which was ok but nothing spectacular. It had a good chewy texture though. I had a piece of his doughnut at his insistence. It was a sweet potato donut with black sesame seeds and candied ginger on top. Like many Asian sweets, this was delicately sweeten and the ginger gave it a nice punch of flavor. I would recommend this donut and may get one for myself next time. I can't eat most donuts because my teeth's sensitivity to extra sugary sweets. Seriously, every time I bite into a donut, I get this intense nerve pain and it feels exactly like biting into aluminium foil. However, I was able to eat this without having any negative repercussions. This fusion menu was great overall with the sandwich and the donut as the leading stars. S+M Vegan is the place to go if you are not sure if food can be delicious without the meat or dairy. These guys always make my Fridays more awesome. read more

S+M catering is incredible! I was so impressed with these chefs and here's why, amazing fully flavored vegan food, professional, great communication, and kind understanding people. Shane and Marie kindly agreed to cater a family event of fifty where most of the people attending were not vegan. They came up with quality menu choices and allowed us to choose our top picks. The BLT sliders are amazing! S+M came in early, created a buffet table, replenished as needed, worked with our old vintage kitchen, and packed up the food for us and cleaned up. They were so prepared and professional, I never had to be concerned about food and I was able to have quality time with my loved ones at the gathering. Everyone complemented the food and were amazed that vegan food could taste so good! Seriously, getting non-vegans to like vegan food, is a big deal. For sure order some extra plates for yourself for after the event, because you will totally want them. Nicely done Shane and Marie! You guys rock! read more

Shane and Marie of S+M Vegan are two ultra cool yet down-to-earth rock star chefs, who understand the value of that extra personal touch, and always leave your taste buds bursting with happiness...whether preparing a gourmet seven-course menu or comfort eats. My then-fiancé and I were therefore delighted when we found out S+M catered weddings. Shane and Marie worked with us to create a seasonal, consciously-sourced, and delicious plant-based wedding menu that was a hit with the masses (many of whom are meat and cheese lovers). Their handmade vegan cheese and eggplant bacon were two of the standouts that people still rave about. S+M was also great at making recommendations based on our tastes and budget, including the idea to serve our dinner family style--a perfect fit for our cozy reception. Both Shane and Marie are great communicators who are extremely detail oriented in their email correspondences. Though their busy schedules didn't always allow them to respond to us right away, they were always patient and thorough in addressing all of our concerns and questions. Shane and Marie were also very accommodating of several special requests, including providing focaccia pizza as a late-night snack (which guests rabidly gobbled up!) and prepping special plates for kids and gluten-free guests. On the day of the wedding, we had to move the dinner inside unexpectedly due to unforeseen rain and fog. S+M's staff sprung into action, assisting our family and wedding party with rearranging tables and even helping wipe down chairs. Service was timely and the staff professional and friendly throughout the reception, despite the rain puddles and tight spaces that they had to navigate through. In addition to working with S+M for our wedding, we have also attended their pop-up at the Double Standard (such great ambiance, and very generous portions!), their annual Mushroom Dinner (one of the best meals of my life, hands down), and had the pleasure of tasting their appetizers at various charity events. They host regular pop-ups and dinners all over the Bay, and though the latter tend to be on the pricier side, it is a very worthwhile experience. In addition to getting to taste creative and innovative dishes, S+M's events provide the lucky attendees with an intimate and cozy way to meet other people with similar interests and appreciation for great cuisine. Marie and Shane catered our 40-person backyard wedding, and it was spectacular. We initially did a tasting with them and my partner and I fell in love with the carbonara and their roasted kabocha squash. The food at the wedding was perfect and honestly the best vegan food we've ever eaten -- as we'd hoped, all of our skeptical non-vegan family went back for seconds (and some thirds)! One of our friends even asked them for their kabocha squash recipe! In addition to taking care of the food, they hired staff to take care of the buffet, found us a bartender, and coordinated all the rentals. Marie, Shane and their staff went above and beyond just the food, taking care of setup so the wedding looked gorgeous and leaving the kitchen and the yard even cleaner than before they arrived. From the start of communicating with Shane and Marie I was impressed. I come from the service industry and consider timely and friendly responses important and to say that of Shane and Marie would be an understatement. My fiancé and I had been following their IG account and were very happy when we saw they moved to LA. We attended one of their Feastly pop-ups downtown, and from the first bite (and a few fist pumps) we were smitten. We have now hired them to cater our vegan wedding! Not only is their food incredible, they are amazing, kind people something that is often tough to come by these days. I highly recommend them. SIDENOTE: The repulsive review by "Melody K" makes me sad for her, she is clearly a miserable human, vying to get attention by being mean spirited. S+M Vegan - SO GOOD! - Caterers Near Me

I've joined S+M Vegan at their multi-course vegan pop-ups as well as various pop-ups around the Bay Area ("Eat Real Festival", Jack London Farmers' Market, The Double Standard, all in Oakland). Because Shane and Marie use local and seasonal ingredients, it doesn't much matter what they serve because it's not uber-likely that the exact same thing will be repeated again. Currently, S+M offers weekly multi-course pop-ups in San Francisco and Oakland (often through Feastly), on Tuesdays and Sundays, as well as weekly Friday night pop-ups from 5-9p at the Double Standard on Telegraph (get there early, as they often sell out well before 9p). They used to do local farmers' markets, but I'm not sure that's part of their rotation any longer. The multi-course meals are inventive affairs, usually three courses, while their Blind Tiger end-of-the-month dinners are six. At farmers' markets, festivals and pop-ups like the Double Standard, the emphasis appears to be on comfort foods, vegan-style, like pizzas, mac & cheese, sandwiches, and fried indulgences. I love that they make their own vegan cheese. I believe they make their own seitan. One doesn't have to be vegan or vegetarian to appreciate their sophistication. Their food is flavorful, subtle, creative, well-designed, and well-executed. At places like the Double Standard, it seems that the menus often have similar items in rotation, at least conceptually -- like pizza -- even though the exact same pizza may not be repeated. I've seen mac & cheese on their menu several times, but it always seems to be different: different sauces, different noodles, different twists. I respect all of the food that Shane and Marie have prepared, even if I haven't loved all of it equally. There was one noodle dish I had once -- could it have been made from yuba? -- in which the sauce wasn't quite bold enough to withstand the innate earthiness and strength of the starch. The food is five stars. Whether or not I love everything they do, their food is great. It's five stars, if not five and a half. Even the comfort/junk foods are well-done and worthy of praise. They are great chefs. I'm entirely sold on flavor and execution and creativity. The reason for my four-star rating comes down to price-point and organics. Price-wise, nothing is cheap. The weekly haute multi-course pop-up dinners can range from $39-65, depending on the number of courses and whether there is some beer or wine pairing offered (most of the dinners are BYOB). For a sophisticated six-course meal for $55 or $60, I have no problem. For a more modest three-course meal of comfort food -- like spaghetti & seitan meatballs or lasagna -- which are delicious -- $39+ seems high. At the simpler pop-ups, a piece of pizza is $8; it feels like it should be no more than $5 or $6. Desserts, which, at least at the Double Standard, often come from Well-Fed, are usually $5. It often feels like they should be no more than $4 or maybe even $3.50. Sandwiches or other entrees can be $11-12, and I feel the pricing would be more appropriate topping out at $10. Maybe more affordable pricing simply isn't possible when a small pop-up is preparing vegan ingredients almost completely from scratch to create these culinary wonderments. This is, after-all, the Bay Area. This leads me to my second reservation: Organics. The food at S+M isn't organic and there's simply no commitment to it in their operation. The menus are still sourced from farmers' market fresh ingredients -- which is far better than sourcing from Safeway -- but I would have thought it would have been both local and organic. Were the food organic, perhaps I'd feel different about the price-point (though $8 for a slice of pizza, organic or otherwise seems high; ditto for mac & cheese). And, while I do pay the premiums that S+M charges when the menu strikes my fancy, the prices have caused hesitation and have stopped me from partaking as often as I might have otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I support Shane and Marie, their mission, their concept, and their creativity. I don't go to their multi-course dinners as often as I'd like because organic or not, $39 or more for comfort-food -- no matter how heightened they may elevate it -- is just too dear to warrant for such items that I can either re-create in my own kitchen or get vegetarian/vegan elsewhere for far less. Were the food organic, however, I'd give S+M five stars notwithstanding the expense at its current price point. Reservations aside, I'm always happy to see S+M, I'm delighted of their success, and I'm happy to support them. The food is a treat, and their pop-ups can be eye-opening, particularly to those who aren't familiar with the brilliance and creativity of modern vegan cuisine. read more

My wife and I were fans of S+M from their popups and Fromagerie Esseme cheeses and were very happy to have them cater our wedding party recently in SF. We did a cocktail reception with buffet service for about 70 people, mostly non-vegans. We got tons of compliments on the food, and my friends kept telling me to be sure to try one dish or another. S+M was good with communication over email, and easy to work with- they accommodated some limitations particular to our historic house venue, and when we fielded a last minute request from the venue coordinator for them to hire extra staff they did so without a hitch. At the event itself they and their staff were friendly, efficient, professional, and kept things running smoothly. So, when I came across Shane and Marie over a year ago, at a private dinner in SF, I sort of felt like I had died and gone to heaven. There is a lot of bad food out there. We all eat it, and as a Vegan, we might eat it more often than others. Shane and Marie UNDERSTAND ingredients. They combine flavors to highlight the subtleties of the product, while maintaining their integrity.
