I love Sababa! I have had Johnnie (the owner) cater a lunch for myself and my co-workers. The set up was perfect, the food was plentiful and still warm. Most of my co-workers had sadly never heard of Sababa, but they all asked where the food was from. My hope was to introduce them to one of my favorite restaurants on the East side. I love to spread the word on good places to go for delicious food in Columbus. I also love that the owner Johnnie is one of the nicest men I have ever met. I love supporting good local spots. I have also gone to the restaurant on East Broad St. near Mt. Carmel in a nondescript little retail strip. Their set up is popular in many quick / casual restaurants now, like Piada, Chipotle, Brassica, Blaze, etc. You pick a base, whether that be pita, rice, salad, fries or hummus. And then you pick your protein. My go to's are the lentil rice and Shawarma, which is grilled chicken with cumin, curry, and garlic. The meat is always tender and so flavorful. Trust me, when you visit, ask one of the employees if you can try the chicken just on its own. The employees will always go out of their way for all their customers and they will be happy to have you try anything. I am always impressed with all the employees at Sababa. Johnnie has surrounded himself by top notch people to support his awesome business. After choosing your base and protein there are three sauces to choose from to top my rice and chicken, mild, medium, or hot. I love both the mild and medium. I haven't been adventurous enough yet to try the hot. Maybe next time I will. Then move a little down the line and choose your toppings. I say yes to almost all of them like fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, banana peppers, garbanzo beans. Sababa also has sides such as hummus with pitas, grape leaves, french fries and Baklava for dessert. You can not go wrong with any of your choices. I usually treat myself to way too much, but all their food is delicious, so I always want a little of everything. If you visit, your will not leave there hungry. This place has gone so bad. Last time I went 4 months ago, the prices were up and portion size down. But I get it, inflation. so I gave it another go yesterday and the service sucks now too! They used to cook your meat to order on the flat top, nope not anymore! Now u get reheated French frie, and chicken cubed out of a cafeteria pan sitting on a warmer.. the grill wasn't even being used. And the teenager working was holding her phone in one hand and scooping my order with the other. Then she would just plop them around the edge (not mixed).. and to top it all off if u want a house dressing (was free) now it's an extra $1.. so it's $9 for a half bowl, $1 each for olives and feta, and a dollar if u want sauce.. Excellent food, great service! We have always experienced cheerful hospitality at Sababa. The pitas are soft and fluffy, the falafel is well-spiced, and the portions are generous. Our server gave us some spicy feta on the side and now I want it on everything!! Love the fresh-cut fries--you can even get your whole meal built on top of them. We're vegetarian, so I don't have any info about the meat, but I can say that all of the food is so fresh and flavorful. I'm not understanding why I had to keep getting pushed to the back of the line for a "Fry Bowl" essentially all because I asked for rice, I kept getting ignored to the point it's making the other customers uncomfortable going ahead of me as I was there first. Then when I raise my voice to ask for rice I'm told "we don't really do that". So I stormed out. First of all the people working here are so friendly. You're greeted as soon as you step in and acknowledged while you're waiting to order. I got the pita with shawarma chicken. It's like a chipotle like concept where you order the base and then add toppings. They heat the protein up for you. I also ordered fries and baklava. Everything was delicious. I was so excited to try this place and it did not disappoint. Parking is fine, prices are comparable to any other mediterrean place (I spent $8 on the pita, $2 on baklava, and $3 on a small fry which is not what I'd consider small, maybe more like a medium) and you get a ton of food. The guy working the cash register was so sweet and friendly and reminded me about the app (which has a punch card, 8th meal is free) so he punched that for me. I was probably in there a max of 10min if that and they make the fries individually but again the service was fast and friendly. It's right across the street from work which could potentially be a problem on my wallet because I will be making a return visit. The restaurant was clean and everything looked fresh. I highly recommend this place! Update: came back on Nov. 9, 18 with a 7 person order and not only were the associates on it and quick, they even got the order right and rang it up right. Good food. Set up is a lot like a Chipotle. Cook brought out samples of their three different chicken types. All were delicious so you cant go wrong there. My buddy and I saw a 'Coming Soon' sign for this place a couple months ago in the old Steak Escape spot on East Broad going toward Blacklick and were eager to give it a shot, since we love gyros, falafel, and all that jazz. It looked almost complete, but I don't think they opened until the past two weeks. Well, that's when I started seeing reviews pop up on here, so I knew it was time to check it out. Do you like Mezze? If so, then you will love this place, since it's almost entirely the same; all the way down to the taste and shape of the falafel. As for me, Mezze is one of my favorite lunch spots in Columbus, so I instantly fell in love with this place. The owner/manager was super friendly and offered everyone free samples of the meats without them asking. We didn't have a lot of time, so we opted for the gyro on a Greek style pita (Yes, they have Middle Eastern style just like Mezze). This place is essentially a Mediterranean Chipotle where you pick our your base (pita, rice, salad), proteins, toppings, and sauce. You can add olives, feta, and/or spice it up for a little extra (Mezze?). I went with the spicy sauce. Unlike Mezze, you go down the line picking out the veggies and toppings you want on your pita or bowl, just like in Chipotle. I ordered falafel along with the gyro, and the gyro was way more filling than I thought it would be, and I had to muscle down the falafel, which are served with a thin hummus. Everything was absolutely delicious. My buddy ordered the same thing but had fries instead and thought it was great as well. He made a comment though that I had to agree with saying that if you blindfolded him, he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Sababa and Mezze. To me, this is a good thing, since I love Mezze, but a bad thing for Mezze, since this is a bit closer to my work. The only issue I ran into, is that they don't offer foil or a piece of paper to wrap around the pita to make it easier to eat, and the house sauce and hot sauce are both pretty thin, and it made a mess everywhere, including my shirt. Be prepared! That is my suggestion to them, and they should really think about it! Parking is super easy to find, since the tiny strip mall they're in has plenty. If you're a fan of Mezze and live on the East or Southeast side, then you'll find yourself having a very similar and tasty experience at Sababa. As for me, I'll be back often (so sorry, Mezze!).
