Tasteless bagel with tasteless lox and cream cheese. See how skimpy the lox layer is?
    Matthew S.

Since returning to New York, I have been to my fair share of fisheries in and around the city. Some good, some not so good, most fall somewhere in between. This one is a tough call because it is none of those. The fish at this market is fresh, but it has zero character. I ordered two sandwiches to be on the safe side of things and I am relieved I did, otherwise it would be a pretty expensive price point for a bland lunch. The lox, or smoked salmon, is okay, but it has no character. Placed onto a similarly bland bagel, the lox offers nothing to the meal. It is quite forgetful. Observing sable in the business's name, I opted to get a sable sandwich as well. Unfortunately the same principle applies. The sandwich is boring and not boosted by anything else. Smoked fish is supposed to have plenty of character in any sandwich or meal it is in. I feel the fish is just style with no substance. It left me walking out of the business frustrated, with a smaller bank account balance to my name. They do have a few tables to sit at so you can enjoy a lunch if you like. I would not recommend it. The tables are dirty and broken. That is how I feel after eating the fish here, dirty and broken.

Went in to purchase a caviar flight and walked out with nothing as this place isn't well kept at all. Everything looked stale. The biggest turn off was after about 8 mins in store not a single staff offered a hello or any assistance. Appears to have variety but not hygienic for a seafood spot. Don't think will give another try.

Can see why this place has the reputation it does. It's a classic no frills jewish deli serving some really high quality smoked salmon. I got a bagel sandwich with smoked salmon and cream cheese and enjoyed it. I will say that the bagel isn't necessarily the best in the city, and I do prefer other places' overall and their smoked salmon sandwiches, but the quality of the salmon is undeniable. Cream cheese was just fine overall. This is more of a quality neighborhood spot than it is a destination spot, imo. Although if I did return I would probably craft a more complex sandwich, knowing that I'd be paying for it too though. If you're in the UES and want to check out the smoked salmon scene, this place is a must visit. It's a small space and service was quick.

Long line before holiday, food looked good but didn't wait. Take out only. Small deli atmosphere.

Waiting to cross E. 76th St. and 3rd Ave. I happened to look behind me to see a bright store sign - SABEL'S. The exterior looked new and inviting and as I could do with something quick to eat decided to check them out. Walked in to a clean space, with a refrigerated section displaying an array of cream cheese spreads, salads and smoked fish. As well as eager to assist workers behind the counter. What really caught my eye was one worker in particular expertly carving almost paper thin slices of Smoked Salmon. This had me sold. I asked for a 1/4lb of Scottish Smoked Salmon, plain, no Cream Cheese or Bagel. I decided to stand at a table. Admired the beautiful packaging before opening, then ate each unctuous slice of Salmon. I must say this was THE best Smoked Salmon I've had in some time. To me it had that Japanese Tuna Otoro consistency. At $61.98/lb, it was well worth it. P.S. While exiting and taking a pic of the store front, I noticed their claim of WORLD'S BEST SMOKED SALMON. Until I stumble upon someplace better, they indeed own that brag.

Sable's smells like fish but for a Sunday morning coffee I sat down and enjoyed a small cup for $2! Service was quick and the employees are all very pleasant to deal with. I've had their food and there's definitely some items I need to try. Now that I know they open early on Sunday I'll return. They have outdoor seating too. I'm recommending! Especially for fish lovers!

The staff greets you once you walk in. They have a great variety of bagels and sandwiches to choose from. I had the smoked salmon with cream cheese on wheat bagel and it was very delicious and fresh. The staff also makes sure that you are very satisfied with your meal which I was. It was a great way to begin the weekend. If you are in the area, then I highly recommend Sable's Smoked Fish!! :)

Simply put, Sable's in New Yorks best appetizing store. Their Master fishcutters are brothers from Hong Kong recruited many years ago from Zabars. Their belly lox (hard to find these days) is just perfect, beautiful and buttery, never too salty. They were among the first and best purveyors of Scottish and specialty salmons like Pastrami cured. Nobody elses compares and it is beautifully cut. Their baked salmon and whitefish salads, always fresh smoky and delicious. Bagels fresh baked daily and sourced from the best bakeries. Additionally do not sleep on their chopped liver and chicken salad! New York's finest. They have been catering our Medical office Pharma lunches for 25 years. Never late. Always delivered fresh. Support the real New York. Support a true Appetizing Store. Order from Sable's!

Pretty decent bagels but not a lot of options, esp for spreads-- as the name suggest they are mostly known for their lox & other smoked fish! We got to sample their lobster salad(?) which was pretty good. I think the lox could be too "fishy" for some people. The inside reminds me more of a deli but there's a couple of tables inside and out for those who want to sit and eat.

Service was a bit rough and hectic on a Sunday afternoon. Bit of a wait as well. We ordered the turkey and egg on a whole wheat bagel and it was delicious. Fresh ingredients and the bagels were perfectly soft on the inside. Even tried the tuna which was amazing. Sandwiches come with a free water/soda/coffee. Seating also available inside.

    Do they have salmon wings?

Hi Harold, yes we have salmon wings. We have both smoked & baked salmon wings at our store.

Do you still carry the smoked salmon ends and smoked salmon(wings)? What are they priced these days?

You pick your seafood, choose how you want it prepared, and then sit back while the kitchen works its magic. It's easy to see why this Queens institution has developed such a devoted following. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel like we were guests at a family dinner rather than customers in a restaurant. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, creating the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger over your meal. The seafood was incredibly fresh and prepared perfectly. We shared an 8-pound snapper, wild-caught salmon, and shrimp, all cooked to perfection and seasoned just enough to let the quality of the seafood shine. On the side, we enjoyed crispy fries, a refreshing Greek salad, and rice, which rounded out the meal beautifully. There's something special about a place that keeps things simple and lets exceptional ingredients do the talking. Astoria Seafood delivers fresh, delicious seafood, generous portions, outstanding hospitality, and an experience that feels more like gathering around a family table than dining out. We got branzino, calamari, shrimp, and scallops. I asked the calamari to be fried and everything else grilled. We also ordered yellow rice and lemon potatoes for our sides. My favorite was the Branzino and scallops. They were grilled perfectly! FYI: it's BYOB! They provide you cups and ice if needed.

We also had the fried soft shell crab sandwich with the side of Caesar salad. The sandwich was well balanced with the crunchy crab and herby aioli. The Caesar was light and refreshing. The fish and chips came with two fried filets of white fish and a basket of classic fries. The fish was lightly battered and flakey. The house made tartar sauce was a good complement to it. Their HH deals are pretty solid -- $2 East Coast Oysters, $10 select wines and $6 beer special. Grabbed a glass of Sauvignon Blanc as I waited for my friend to arrive, which they were very patient and accommodating for. As soon as my friend arrived, we ordered a 1/2 dozen West Coast oysters, which were not on the happy hour menu, and several dozens of the HH East Coast oysters. Our server did an excellent job explaining the origin of the oysters as well as the specials of the day. The West Coast oysters were Kumamoto (California), while the East Coast selection were called Bad Boys (from Nova Scotia, Canada). Normally I'm a big fan of West coast oysters, but the Bad Boys were delicious! They were plump with a bold ocean brine & crisp finish. My friend also ordered a cup of clam chowder, which he thoroughly enjoyed. One of the best oyster HH spots I've come across, because it seems to be harder finding good ones lately. Would definitely come back to try the other seafood dishes.

It's a little overwhelming because there is definitely a lot of seafood to choose from. The fish selection looks fresh but they do have some previously frozen seafood like large prawns and lobster tails. They have the names of everything and the price per pound posted which can be a little intimidating because it's a bit expensive. We ordered a grilled branzino and asked for the large tiger shrimp. The staff behind the counter said it would be the ones without the head but when long at the sign, it said head on tiger shrimp so I was a little confused but we just went with it because we assumed the staff knew what they were talking about. We did also get the head-on large prawns. We asked for everything to be grilled and confirmed that they don't use butter or cheese or cream on anything and then we went upstairs to get a table. Upstairs by the window is nice because you can people watch on a good day. We asked the staff member if there were any butter or cream or cheese in the mezza or rice and she said no, so we proceeded to order those and also asked about the soup of the day. She told us it was a shrimp and corn soup and that sounded good so we ordered that as well. The mezza came and the babaganoush and moussaka were good. The lemon potatos were fine but other places have made it better. The tahini was tahini and nothing special. The soup came and we took a sip and it tasted like cream so we were confused because the staff member didn't mention cream when she was taking about it. We asked about it when another staff member came by to drop off the rice. The original staff member who helped us came back over and we asked her if there was cream in the soup. She told us that yes because it's a chowder and the chowder has dairy and told us that we ordered the soup. I'm not denying that we ordered it. My issue is that we specifically asked about avoiding dairy in other food menu items and she didn't even stop to mention that hey the soup of the day that you want is a shrimp and corn chowder and has dairy. She took it back but I felt like we were inconveniencing her because of her tone. The mains arrived shortly after. The head-on prawns came and then the branzino. The large head-on prawns were overcooked and a little rubbery. The branzino was a touch too lemony but that was probably my fault for squeezing lemon over it. The fish was firm and smooth. There wasn't a lot of flavor on either dish. By this time, our table is pretty full and one of the staff members came by with the tiger shrimp and he more or less just stared at the full table and then plopped the plate down right next to my husband's phone. We barely even had time to move plates around to clean up space for him, but I feel like they should have definitely looked a little harder because one of our plates was just full of bones and shells and could have been taken away which would have made room for the shrimp. They were also over cooked and rubbery. Throughout our meal, no one came to check on us once. At the end of the meal, I used my own hand sanitizing wipes and was a little puzzled that they don't give any to customers. We got the bill and were a little peeved that they charged us $3 to butterfly the branzino. We weren't told about that and we didn't particularly ask for them to butterfly it. There's individual hand wipes by the stairs and it's odd that staff don't bring them to you once you're ready to pay. Are customers expected to walk around with dirty hands to go grab the wipe by the stairs? It's definitely a one time experience and overall, I wouldn't recommend it for the poor service and seafood being overcooked and underwhelming.
