Dont let the location scare you off from trying this hidden gem. The staff was very nice and was able to walk us through the menu. For some reason I think I have been to this place before but the inside interior looks totally different. This might have been the first Guatemalan restaurant in Salt Lake City. Now it is a mixture of Venezuelan, Colombian, Mexican, and Guatemalan. My mom and older brother didn't like their Mexican dishes, the rest of us all seemed to have enjoyed ours. The drinks, the tamales, the 2 soups (beef & chicken), the papusas, and combo plates. They didn't have any desserts but the drinks that were like a caramel flavor hops types made up for it. Full disclosure: Being raised in an Arizona border town I was raised on Sonoran Mexican food, but I have never had Colombian or Venezuelan food that I know of. So just keep in mind that I am a complete newbie to this cuisine since I avoided the Mexican section of the menu completely. I ordered a Pupusa Frijol, a Empanada Colombiana, & an Arepa Colombiana. According to google, the Pupusa Frijol is a maize based flatbread and the one I ordered is stuffed with beans and cheese. The pupusa is very similar to the arepa bread. For some reason I was expecting refried beans but it was stuffed with black beans. It wasn't super stong on flavor so I dipped it in the provided guacamole and that was delicious. I enjoyed it but it was probably my least favorite of the 3. I read that the Empanada Colombiana is a more popular empanada to order. It has ground beef and potatoes. It was very tasty. The filling is mostly ground beef. I'm not a huge fan of gorund beef in general so I probably would have enjoyed the texture more if it was shredded or more like carne asada. There aren't a lot of potatoes in it. The outside is perfectly crunchy. The empanada is bigger than I expected it to be. I dipped it in the salsa verde they provided. Very tasty. Again I googled which Arepa dish is most popular and the Arepa Colombiana popped up most often so I ordered it. Arepa is a maize based bread possible what is used in the pupusa dish. I'm not sure. The dish I ordered is grilled Arepa stuffed with mozzarella cheese. The arepa is absolutely delicious! It actually tastes a lot like a quesadilla that I'd get back home. The arepa and cheese kind of mold together. The arepa has a slight crunch on the outside and the cheese is warm and gooey on the inside. It's a pretty good size and is pretty filling. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. My favorite was probable the Arepa Colombiana. The nostalgia of that quesadilla taste can't be beat but the Empanada came close. read more

The best Colombian food I have had since Colombia and I've been to a few spots in NYC and my home state in Texas. The pollo menchado empanadas were absolutely delicious and made fresh with flavorful shredded chicken breast, and the ají was delicious too. For an entree I got the picada criolla with black beans and all the meats were made fresh and with seasoning, and it does come with a lot of yucca. We are here when it first opened and loved it! The appetizers were ceviche in 3 different configurations and each one was as yummy as the other! My husband ordered el Plato piasa which is a gastronomic orgy of amazing Colombian good ( meat, rice beans, pork rinds and avocado) it was delicious. I ordered the seafood risotto that was flavorful and loaded with seafood. They had not gotten their liquor license at this time since it was the grand opening but it was ok. We stopped in to help my out of state sister-in-law with wedding planning as her fiancé is Guatemalan and they were looking for a catering option. Daniela was our server and answered all of our questions and gave great recommendations. We ordered a basket of mixed empanadas (the shredded beef with their green salsa was a favorite,) chicharron pupusas, chicken tamales, sweet corn tamales, and platanos con frijoles, crema y queso. For my main course, I had the combination platter, which had a bunch of great options from different regions. Empanadas here are amazing! Though mine came out a little more oily than expected, the flavors were out of this world. I tried both the shredded beef and chicken a loved both. Empanadas are $1.99 and well worth the money - they're bigger than most I've seen. The sauces they bring out on the side are all good. Not sure if they are all for empanadas but I thought it was pretty tasty! They have the signature and my favorite milky green sauce, an orange sauce that has a pretty good kick of spice and a cilantro-lime type sauce. All delicious. Bookmarked this place cause my wife is from Colombia, and wanted to surprise her with some good Columbian food. Ultimately we were both pretty happy with it, and the authenticity and portions are excellent. On our visit however, all of the meat we got was really dry and hard to eat. Normally I would rate them less for this, but we also got some Pupusas, Empinadas, Pasteles and the other foods included with the meals all of which were beyond great! We will for sure make this a regular stop, and I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in some really authentic Colombian/Venezuelan and Guatemalan food. One other note is that the service was not great. We speak Spanish, and obviously my wife is from Colombia, so it wasn't just cause they spoke mostly Spanish there, cause we spoke to them in Spanish for most of the time. Essentially we walked in and the girl at the counter just stated at us without moving or making a sound. like at first we thought maybe they were closed or something. We just sort of stood there for a second waiting for her to tell us what to do (sit us, or seat ourselves) but a good 20 seconds went by and not a single flinch from her. My wife finally asked "should we seat ourselves", and she nodded so slightly you would miss it if you weren't looking real hard. That young girl only spoke maybe 1 word to us the whole time (and she was our server). My wife was really upset about it, just cause that was/is a big part of the authentic thing to her is that these little places (in our outside US) are usually run by families, and they are just so nice and hospitable. She really would probably have given them a 1 star just cause she wasn't able to get past that, and even though this is a great authentic spot, I might have a hard time convincing her to go back here again. If the service is better on our next visit, and food not tough id give them 5 full stars. Even if service is good alone I would at least have done 4 due to all the other food beside the meat. read more

When they say "Latino" they're not messing around. It cannot be pigeonholed into one country. There's something from many different parts of Latin America--you've got strong presence from Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Mexico, but a smattering of things throughout. On a recent lunch I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I went with a combination plate. Some Colombian sausage, fried plantains, carne asada, fried egg, and chicharrones. High fives to every last one of those items on that list, but I'm not a huge chicharrones fan. If it's your thing, go for it. The sweet servers were kind enough to humor me by allowing me to speak Spanish to them. They communicated in English well enough, but it was fortunate I had the rusty Español when I asked more than simple questions. Even though you spend closer to $10 for lunch, you're going to get stuffed. Most stuff comes with rice and soup, and the portions are big. I jammed my face with food and I think the combo was something like $12 bucks. I spoke with the owner for a while. He's really trying to get some love for Latin American food. They prepare everything fresh each morning and he was insistent that they don't hold anything over. Ambiance, well... suck it up. Once you're inside it's okay. Kinda cozy. But it's next to a strip club, and parking is cramped on the northern side. But it's not stabby. For something new and different, I was really pleased and would love to explore that varied menu a little more. read more

My narrative is of a transplant to SLC and so, Sabor Latino serves as my backdrop, my lovely go-to for "back home" fixins. It's now one of my favorite places in the area. This place, though small and divey, provides comfort food that for some, once only existed thousands of miles away; this place is a true treasure for that reason alone. Walking in, some classic Salsa or Merengue or Bachata, even some Mariachi may play. The aura of grandma's kitchen is affixed for what should be a family get together. That's the narrative for Sabor Latino: Home. I'm compelled to write about the food and service here for the variety, the sincerity, and how authentic the tastes are. Now on my second visit, I am pleased with the food... a lot. Not very expensive, and yet - I would pay top dollar to eat like this everyday. My server, so friendly and easygoing (and bilingual) has been happy to explain whatever I may not know on the menu as the food reaches several countries throughout Latin America.
