Finally got a chance to come here after many attempts! First time we came and they were closed for a week. Second time we came around 6pm and we were 42nd in line (yeah, you read that right). Well, the third time's the charm (kind of) and we came minutes before opening and there was already a line wrapped around to the parking lot. Luckily there are many tables inside and we were seated as the first group of diners for the night. They first seat the ones in line and then start they start accepting yelp waitlist guests. So if you're in line, then you're good to go, no need to join the waitlist on yelp! Now onto the food! We ordered a couple nigiri, one hand roll and one roll. The nigiris were alright, pretty fresh but not much flavor. Maybe I'm spoiled by great sushi in SoCal but this didn't impress me much. It's very good for portland standards but doesn't warrant an hour plus wait. The spicy tuna and roll were very sad. I stopped hear after a gym class. I would say this place is a-okay. All of the fish tasted fresh, and their real crab California roll definitely didn't skimp on the crab. The service was generally pretty good, and the prices were decent. Although I know they're known for their ginormo sushi rolls, I found there was just way too much rice. It was also very unevenly spread with some sushi pieces being 3/4 rice and other ones being ok. I couldn't even finish it all due to the loads of rice. I would have paid the same amount for less rice to be honest as opposed to having rolls that were just made huge by extra rice. I think next time I'll try one if the dinner sets instead. read more

We used to love going to Saburo's and so did a lot of other people which is why there was generally a line out the door. Well its not the same, if you are coming back to Saburo's after a hiatus do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, the delicious sushi has left the building and has been substituted by something resembling gas-station food (that's harsh but not far off). YES, the wait is really worth it, believe me. When driving past this restaurant, you might question why people are willing to wait outside for an hour or more to be seated at Saburo's. Well the answer is, not many places gives you as big of a portion for its price than Saburo's. Not only is their fish quality impeccable, one slice of fish on their nigiri is equivalent to two slices of nigiri at another restaurant. The nigiri (two piece sushi) is around $4-5 depending on what you order. Which in reality it feels more like a sanigiri (three piece sushi) if that was a real thing. I can honestly say I enjoyed all the sushi that I ordered, the Hamachi, White Tuna, Salmon Belly, Toro, Uni, Tuna, Scallop, everything was super fresh and very worth the price. I come here for the food and not the service. I constantly remind myself this. It's so busy that you come here to eat. Not to talk or get to know people. If this is you, then there will be a ton of angry people in line waiting for you. I keep coming back and suffering through the wait because it's good sushi and massive portions. Be prepared for sushi the size of your wrist! I usually have a great time here but what caught me off guard was that they applied a 15% gratuity on my entire parties bill which comprised of 3 people and our original bill didn't come out to be $100 like the menu implied and our party was definitely smaller than a party of 5. They need to update their menu and let people know this gratuity will be applied to everyone. Even with the added gratuity our bill wasn't even $100. It gets harder to tip higher because I literally saw my server only when I ordered, when they brought out the food, and when they brought the bill. There is a reason so many people are waiting to eat here every day. The sushi is consistently fresh and delicious. People have said the sushi is pricey here but if you take into account how large every piece of sushi is, the price is quite worth it. Personally I really enjoy the salmon because of how rich the flavor and texture is and the tamago(egg) because of how moist and sweet it is. The service here is also very efficient. While the wait is always long (unless you get there before they open) ... the new waitlist option helps mitigate the issue but we were still 30 minutes behind the estimated time. The sushi rolls are LARGE in comparison to the norm. A great selection of sushi and other traditional meals / appetizers for every tastebud in your party. I used to religiously bring out of town guests here for good, affordable, ridiculously large sushi (for shock value at that time, or I suppose these days, instaworthy food pics), but its been at least 8+ years since I've been back here. My recent visit was both pleasant and shocking in terms of how things have changed and stayed the same. Same same but different: - The lines are still ridiculously long, but its AWESOME you can put yourself on the waitlist via yelp without having to be there in person... and it gives you an estimated seating time!! (There is also an ipad to put yourself on the waiting list if you're there in person). On my drive down, I put our names in and we were seated within minutes of arrival. Yay.. cuz we were starving. - the portion sizes are still humongous, but the price point has caught up. Some items doubled to tripled in price since 8 years ago and other items stayed close to the same. (My fav rolls used to be like $6-8... now they are close to $19). While I was sticker shocked at the jump, I understand at the same time... It has been a long minute since being here and the prices for the quantity you get is still reasonable. - selection. Moderate selection and the quality is pretty good. Towards the end of the night you can expect many items to have run out so if you want any toro, come early! For 2 huge pieces for $5, you cant beat it! - service, ordering and decor is about the same. Expect to wait for a while for orders to be taken, waters to be filled and food to come. This is the weirdest sushi I've ever had - made for huge giants. It was really nearly inedible it was so big. The pieces should be 1 - 2 bites, not 4 to 5. The rolls are ridiculously large, loosely rolled and they fall apart. The nigiri pieces are way to big and heavy to use chopsticks with and using your hands is a sticky, awful mess. The quality may be there, but authenticity is no where to be found. Who puts mayonnaise in sushi?! Need I say more? This place is amazing. I've been coming here for years, and the fish is always delicious and plentiful. It can look a bit pricey at first, but when you consider that the pieces of fish that you get here make the servings in other places look like tiny slivers, you're getting more than your money's worth. Service is good considering how crowded the place is all the time (talking about pre-pandemic here.) I've had sushi that is more delicately flavored, but this is near the top of the range; you get not only a lot more fish than the average conveyor belt place, but better fish too. I have only ever had two issues with this place, and they're really non-issues. The first is that there's a wait to get in; you just have to take this into consideration. I recommend arriving half an hour or more before opening so you get into the initial seating of the place - again, talking about when dine-in is happening, hopefully soon. You are blocking the entrance/exit. This is a fire hazard, duh. Again, you will get yelled by the kind lady if you try to wait inside. We order our usual schmeal. We like to splurge so we got almost 1 of every sashimi and did a fried octopus appetizer and a sushi roll. They are made to order and it comes out fast and together. Saburo loves to create their magic dish all in one plate so it comes out massive and IG worthy. Just imagine the different colors and thick slices of fish with enough rice to feed two. I'm always happy when I'm actually sat down. Pre and post the experience is always meh. I hate the wait, and I hate that I actually succumbed to the wait for mediocre. It's weird. Creamy scallops, tuna poke, nigiri salmon were very fresh. The toro nigiri was a bit disappointing in freshness and tasted watery and bloody. The rich fattiness was absent but it did not lower the dining experience. Service staff were more friendly and fast as compared to previous experiences where employees seemed disgruntled. This has been our go to sushi spot in Portland for the past 8-9 years. Jumbo size sushi, cheap prices but still great quality for most of the fish. You will not be able to finish nigiri or sushi roll in one single bite. Be prepare to wait for 1.5-2 hours if you arrive after opening! We always try to be there when they first open. For 3 adults and 2 kids, it was around $125. So $25 per person, definitely affordable and great price for sushi. Parking is very limited but there is street parking by the neighborhood. They automatically add gratuity to our bill, they said anything over $100 they add 18%. But previously, our bill was less than $100 we were still charged 18%. Service isn't the best, but can't expect too much as they try to rotate their tables as fast, due to the long lines, and they already have their gratuity. They do not take reservations. The service was quick & they were really attentive. There was a menu & you had to mark down every item you wanted with a pen. It made things more efficient! Sushi came & we were so surprised with the size of each sushi!!! It was so huge! It wasn't because of the rice either! The sushi was stuffed with huge pieces of raw fish & tempura & the veggie. It's just not fair to sit there all night, especially since the prices are so reasonable for what you receive. I remember coming here years ago with the taste of fish and filling your whole mouth with unnecessary oversized sushi. It was literally the best. But coming here now is different. Sushi doesn't taste fresh, there's a very strong vinegar taste to the sushi rice, and the service is just okay. The wait almost isn't worth it anymore for the sushi as it's almost conveyer belt quality sushi. The only thing that's the same about Saburos is the oversized sushi. We've been going to Saburo's for years. The wait time is hit or miss, generally recommended to arrive before opening time. We went recently and didn't have a problem arriving a little after opening. Food also came out fast. If you care about service, this place is not for you. Their portions are what makes it worth it; they're huge. This is my absolute favorite place to eat on the entire planet. I am so sad that we moved, but when we lived in Oregon, we lived in a place that was about 30 minutes from Saburo's. The drive was totally worth it, and so was the wait. The wait was usually around 1 hour to 2 hours, if you got there at second seating. If you wanted first seating, get there about 30 minutes to 1 hour early. Trust me, you want to get there early. They don't have reservations, so definitely be on time or put yourself on the waiting list. My favorite roll is the creamy scallops, but the 'Real Crab Handroll' is not far behind. The portions are ginormous for a cheap price. The fish is always fresh and I recommend the fatty tuna belly nigiri and the ama ebi nigiri. This is the place we would go for any special occasion. For those of you who complain about "Decor" or the fact that you didn't get there on time, which is your fault anyway, shame on you. Huge portions, great bang for your buck, average quality. Definitely order online 60-90 minutes before you want to eat since this place gets busy. So far I've tried the creamy scallop, Shogun, and Sabu. I really like that the prices are low and portions are big (however rolls include a lot of rice). The fish quality is about as good as what you get at the grocery. This isn't top tier sushi, but the prices make it super worth it. Creamy scallop is my favorite. It's the roll with the least rice and in my opinion, the best quality. The Sabu had a lot of rice, of course tons of fish on top, almost like a sushi burrito. The shogun was my least favorite of the three. The eel was a bit under average and overall the ingredients didn't work well together. This is a great place if you're hungry and don't want to break the bank, but not necessarily the spot to go to if you want the best sushi in the area. read more

I've never had sushi with that big of fish portions in my entire life. We ordered so much food and had so much leftover. Each roll size was about the size of my palm, it was ridiculous! Satisfyingly huge sushi!! Our party of four got here a little past 5 and we saw a line out the door. We immediately lined up and barely missed the cutoff. Everyone else got seated before us, so it was a little unlucky on our end. We ended up waiting 40-50min to get a table, but there was no plan B so we stuck it out. We ordered a bunch of stuff, all of which were really affordable. I forgot how long the food took to come out, but I was so happy to see a plate FULL OF SUSHI. Not just a plate full of sushi, but a plate full of HUGE SUSHI. It was an amazing sight to behold. Everything was really good, but I think what made it so fun to eat was how giant the sushi was. So each bite we took was filled with fish, which was amazing. Some of us had to take two to three bites to finish one piece! I like to support local restaurants and my local cantonese peeps. But this last experience was really bad. Ordered at 5p and food web site said it was ready at 7p. I was expecting the longer wait on a Fri, so 7p was ok. I got to the restaurant at 7:30 and hey could not find my order. They had given my order to somebody else by mistake. 5 more mins to remake my order they said. I didn't believe that, but whatever. 20 mins later they had my food. No apology, no comp. Food was yummy though. Same experience of of poor service last month too. I had thought to give them another chance this after a while to work out the kinks, but it was just as bad. read more

Gigantic rolls, filled with melt-in-your-mouth hunks of fish and contrary to other comments, not that much rice. They're generous with their sashimi and its just my favorite sushi spot on the planet. The quality of fish here is really poor and isn't very appetizing. After my first visit here, I wasn't extremely impressed, but decided to give it another try since so many people seem to love it. During my second visit, I was even less impressed and decided that I won't be coming back. The restaurant is pretty cramped and the customer service isn't that great. The wait is also really long even if you're only in a party of 2. Came to Portland to visit a friend who recently moved here and who was told to check this place out. They said there would be a line and they weren't wrong. We put on name on this list at 5:30 and didn't end up sitting down till 8:30. It was okay though cause we were able to go back to their place to hangout until it was our turn in line. The size of the sushi here is freaking huge (check out the picture). On top of that, the quality of the fish is definitely there. I can see why people wait this long to eat here. The food was 5-starts but the service 4-stars. I felt rushed to finish my meal so the next people could sit down. Price for what you get though is really really good. Sadly it slowly started going down hill after that and now you couldn't pay us to eat here. The quality dropped drastically while the prices Skyrocketed! The fact that some of the rolls we used to get, for $12-15 are now $20-25 is insane when the quality is as questionable as it is and the size of the rolls is half of what it used to be!
