I am going to be so sad when this place gets turned into a community center or whatever the plan currently is. I grew up in NY and was only used to tenpin until I moved up here and was schooled in the magically confusing ways of candlepin bowling. I still can't keep score for the life of me, but it's so much fun who cares. It seems like a hybrid of shotput and skeeball or something. A friend of mine once accidentally threw a bowling ball through the dropped down ceiling over the lanes and was presented with a trophy for his athletic prowess, along with the nickname "cannonball" which I thought was sweet. That and the fact they didn't charge him for putting a hole in the ceiling. The place is pretty dingy, but it's a bowling alley, so what can you expect? They have soda and candy machines. There are also pool tables if bowling isn't your thing. My husband wants me to reiterate that it is the only legitimate bowling alley in the area: it smells like a bowling alley, everything is manual, and has all the charms of bowling alleys of yesteryear (he's quite the articulate one. considering he's 32 I'm not quite sure what yesteryear he is referring to) The only potential downside is that they do not serve alcohol there, which is most likely why they will soon be leaving us, as the space is being turned into something else. Save the big bucks for beer at the Burren or Underbones and shell out the Washingtons for a night at Sacco's. I'm not usually a candlepin kind of girl, but a night here can definitely be fun in the company of good friends. You'll need to channel your grade school bowling all star who ran on sugar instead of hops because Sacco's is alcohol free. Scoring is manual, so make sure you have someone who knows what's going on. I'm more of the silly maker-upper-of-names-er person in case you want to invite me. Check out their website for a coupon for free shoe rentals. Talk about a place that caters to families. Candlepin bowling with those small balls and old school bumpers.. the lanes don't appear to be greased, so the kiddos who walk along the alley won't get slick. Order your pizza and drinks while you bowl! It's just ... not a great place to expect to bowl at if you're showing up randomly... there is ALWAYS a wait and to reserve a lane is possibly impossible? Its saving grace -- for those of us who like to live dangerously and wait out the wait -- is the attached Flatbreads pizza restaurant and bar. It's super ideal for waiters. But back to the kiddos. The wood-fired oven has a viewing bench for the little ones. Front row seats to sizzling dough and the guy who throws the pizza in the air. Love. Also, if you ask the waitress, she'll give you a small piece of dough for those imaginative tikes to form up themselves. And what's cuter than watching a 3-year-old put imaginary toppings on her own piece of dough?? Anywho, if you aren't a child or don't have one of your own ... did I mention the bar? I've died and gone to hell. I'll never forget my first visit here. I walked in, looked around and thought, "how quaint, they have a candlepin room." Nope. . .it's not a candlepin room, it's all candlepin bowling. Being from Ohio, you can imagine my confusion when handed a tiny little ball and waws told to hurl at the pins not once, not twice but thrice. "uh, this isn't bowling. Haven't you seen the Big Lebowski?" no one was amused. After a lot of a gutter balls, I went and meditated upon a framed photo of a candlepin bowler clad in checkered pants and sporting chops that made my mouth water "oooooooom" and then it hit me. Wow, I forgot how much fun it is to go bowling..... Sacco's is the answer to this question: "What should we do tonight? There's never anything to do. I don't feel like: a) going to a movie; or b) going to dinner and then a bar." Other positives: 1) Flatbread Co. makes great pizza. 2) Solid beer list. 3) You can put your name down on a list for bowling and sit down for dinner. I always describe this place as hipster bowling. I didn't know bowling like this existed, but it was an exciting twist and super fun. I first came here for my birthday, and you definitely have to make a reservation as lanes fill up well in advance. The pizza here is really good (Flatbread Company), and there's a decent selection of beer on tap at the bar. One thing I didn't like though is that they don't have pitchers, so you have to bring individual drinks back to the lanes. Regardless, it's a cool spot and definitely worth checking out! read more

I do love candlepin bowling and I love that saccos is one of the only places around, but its NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to get a lane here. It's always packed and they don't take reservations unless its for big parties, and even then you can have trouble. The place doesnt have a ton of lanes, and not nearly enough for its popularity, which I understand isnt really its fault. But it's a major bummer to have to wait hours for a lane, and thats even if you can get on the list. My advice is to go on a crazy off hour or find a bunch of people to try and make a reservation read more

I'm not a fan of Candlepin, I like my balls big, but this place is awesome. It is a blast from the past. It makes Lanes and Games look modern and cosmopolitan. All right you New Englander's....I have A LOT of California pride. I still stand by and represent my Nor Cal roots. I come from a world of In-n-Out's and Jamba Juice's where Boston imitators cannot compare. However, tonight I discovered the one gloriously fun thing that California will never have: candlepin bowling. And I experienced my first time at Sacco's. Not only did I discover I love candlepin bowling MORE than "normal" bowling, I really dig the old school vibe that Sacco's really strives to keep. You can tell this place has been around for a while, keeping a lot of it's original decor and pride but in a clean and renovated manner. And along with their classic feel comes a classic price: $1.50 for shoe rental and $3 a game. Plus, they're open in the early morning to the wee hours of the night! We arrived at 6pm and we were the only ones there. But by 6:30pm, this place promptly started filling up. You should note that this place is totally family friendly. So because of this, no alcohol is served. Boo to that! So well played, Massachusetts. Candlepin bowling totally won me over. Next time I go to play, I'll return to Sacco's read more

Glad they redid this place. they took out a couple lanes and added the Flatbread pizza co/bar area- all of a sudden, this dive candlepin sh*thole, is a really good time! old school style (pencil and paper scoring) with old school prices. $2 per person for shoes, and 20 bucks per lane per hour. what a steal! the pizza is damm good too. great local-ish beer selection. If I was going strictly on fun and quality of food, this place would get 5 stars hands down. However, it really bothers me that you can't make a reservation for a group of less that 8 people. That means, even if you made plans to go two weeks in advance, with a group of six people, you could still end up waiting several hours. They have some sort of call ahead system, which is almost a same day reservation, except you can still wait for an hour. Who wants to spend all night waiting around? If you are diligent enough to plan ahead, you should be rewarded with a table/lane. Last minute people should have to wait like everywhere else. read more

This is not the place for people who just want to drink martinis and front to their date like they are athletic, fun, or interesting. This is f'real. No fancy computers, no fancy lasers, no dandy fops. The bathrooms will definitely put some hair on your chest. Probably the most fun to be had in the entire city of Somerville. I strike down one star because the music (Zeppelin, Floyd, etc.) and cigarette stench make me feel like I am just a Family Guy poster away from playing Wii bowling in a U-Dude's dorm room. Absolutely amazing! I went here with friends who wanted a low key evening and some good old fashion bowling. We had never tried candlepin bowling (we're not from the area) and it was the perfect place to learn. We walked in and we were blown away by the 1950s of it all. It was pretty surreal! My friends and I went bowling here as a last resort since the place we wanted to go to (Lanes and Games) had a two hour wait and that was just not going to fly. We had REALLY wanted to do 10 pin but hey we figured the candlepin was better then just going home. When we got there they said it was a 15 minute wait. OK no problem we went and played pool for about five minutes when they called our name. Shoes were cheap to rent and we bowled for 2 games with 5 people and we only paid $6 each plus $1.50 for shoes. Cheap as all hell. It was great. The manual scoring was a bit annoying but once you got the hang of it it wasn't that bad. It turned out to be a pretty good time after all, and we'll probably be back, despite the lack of alcohol too. The decor also looks like it hasn't been changed since the 70s which made you feel a bit like you'd been time traveling, and I second that this place is a "tough" house and the pins don't fall easily...but maybe that's because I am a girl and can't throw hard. read more

Except for the large sign outside, it would be easy to walk right by this place. I love the retro feel of this place. From the old cash register to the vintage furniture, you definitely feel like you have stepped back into the '70s. Sometimes simple is better. They don't take credit cards and you manually keep track of your own score. The guy at the counter was so nice. I took my "Little Sister" here and it was her first time bowling. She LOVED it, but was really nervous at first. Since it is tough to always think of low- or no-cost activities, Sacco's was a great choice for a rainy Sunday. We got a $8 children's special which includes 3 games and shoe rental. I asked the man at the counter if I could help her out since she had never gone bowling before. He said that was fine as long as I had bowling shoes on. I had a coupon from the website for a free shoe rental so it was perfect! We had so much fun that we bowled two games together too! All in all, five games of bowling and two pairs of rented shoes only cost us $20. I've also been to Sacco's on a date with my bf and we had a blast, It's definitely a cost-effective option for couples, families, co-workers, etc. to have fun together in an old-fashioned spot. Just a heads up, there is only a snack and soda machine, no full service restaurant. Also, as mentioned before, they only take cash NOT credit cards or debit cards. Took a group of staff & students bowling as a school outing. It was originally impossible to contact to book as a school group, so I made an 18 person reservation via Yelp. The food and bowling were great! The servers were incredibly patient when taking many orders. The staff there apologized for being difficult to originally get in contact with, provided information for further school trips, and then didn't charge anyone for bowling shoes! I've just recently moved here from Ohio and had never heard of candlepin bowling until my Boston friends invited me out to Sacco's. Safe to say that I now am a complete convert and will take candlepin bowling to regular bowling any day! We went a little after 9pm on a Monday, which was apparently just after the leagues finished. Like most bowling places, the interior is dingy and the slight smells of food and old leather permeate the place. But unlike most bowling places, it's not at all sketchy. I've feared for my life in some bowling alleys, but Sacco's was great. Cheap ($3 a string/game and $1.50 shoe rental), good, clean fun! My Mom bowled. I repeat, My mom, in all her Martha Stewart glory, actually saddled up, laced up her rental shoes and bowled. I have never seen my Mom bowl. In my life. I suppose the fabulous food, wonderful wine and overall mellow yellow vibe imbued her with some newfound adventurous glory. The pizzas were so sublime. Had pesto something. Yum. Ate fifty pieces too many. Thin, flatbread like pizzas designed to tempt you with farm fresh ingredients. UFO brew. Yum. Long, family style wooden picnic tables. Super smiley, attentive staff, whom went so far to offer to charge my waning cell phone battery. They were just rad people. Like hanging out with a talented band when they're still playing the local bar, before they go all Billboard top 40. No pretentiousness around the lanes. A couple show-offs with their wind up arms and excessively choreographed lunges, but that aside, really good time. Old school, vintage bowling with skinny little pins and small ass balls with no holes. Candlepin for those in the know. It was a tad meat locker freezing indoors, which was the only turn off. It's a Somerville gem and everytime someone comes to visit from out of town, this is one of the places on my list for them to visit. While I've never been able to master Candlepin, I always have the best time. It's bare bones, minimalist and I can't get enough. I went here for a get together with a group of work colleagues and it was a blast! Firstly, DELICIOUS pizza, they do locally sourced organic ingredients, one of the pizzas had beets and goat cheese which is one of my favorite combos. I would go back just for the pizza and for the great beer selection and unique cocktails. If you're like me and aren't from New England originally you may not be familiar with "candlepin" as someone called it. I went in expecting the conventional bowling but its much different. The bowling balls are smaller like bocce balls and the pins are cylindrical or candle shaped and are smaller than regular pins. Plus you get three tries instead of two. It was an interesting experience but you have to be careful of rogue balls going into the other lanes if you throw rather aggressively! The service was great too, everyone was really polite and I am always grateful for a good waiter/waitress who is able to handle a large group of people who all wanted separate drink tabs! I guess my only complaint is how cramped it can get in there when its busy but that's not a huge deal. read more

I went to a birthday party here, and I have to say I *love* the place. It was a little crowded, you'll probably need to make arrangements ahead of time to bowl on the weekend. The bowling is candlepin, so if you fancy the big balls you'll need to go elsewhere. Scoring is on a paper scorecard, so if computers have been doing your math for you, bring an accountant. Don't forget to adjust for PI. If you can't get your bowl on because it's crowded, the flatbread pizzas are amazing. A little pricy, but amazing. And they have a nice long bar with a delightful selection of craft beers. The Mofos have Tuckerman's ON TAP... can't go wrong, there. That was my victory brew after hiking Mount Washington. The wait staff wasn't rude, but not exactly friendly. They remembered every damned thing our party ordered though, and there were a LOT of us. Take eight baby boomers out celebrating a birthday, some of whom hadn't bowled in decades, add pints of craft beer to dissolve any athletic ability anxiety, followed by very good artisanal wood-fired pizzas, and you have a really fun evening. We had reserved well in advance, and after a wait of only a few minutes we picked up our bowling shoes and went to our two assigned lanes. This place is seriously old school candlepin, with scarred bowling balls that were probably in service the last time I bowled regularly, in elementary school in the early 70s. After an hour of bowling we were led to our table right near the pizza oven, which provided not only a blast of heat but entertainment, as we watched the cooks toss dough and whip the pizzas in and out of the fiery oven. We ended up sharing four large pizzas with various toppings, and had more than enough to sate our appetites, as well as have some leftovers to bring home. The ingredients were fresh, the combinations interesting, and the dough cooked just right, some light charring but still slightly chewy. We started with a few big salads that were quite good as well. Service was enthusiastic and prompt. The pitchers of water on the table were a nice touch that meant we didn't need to chase the waitress for refills, unless we needed another beer or glass of wine. Don't expect a quiet dining experience of course; between the crash of pins and the cheers of bowlers whenever someone rolled a good ball, it's pretty loud, but that's part of the vibe. So whether you're a boomer stepping back in time (but the New England candlepin bowling alleys of my youth never had such good food, never mind beer!) or a millennial seeking that ironic cultural experience, Sacco's fits the bill. read more

I hosted an event here for my non-profit agency. It was both a good idea and a bad idea. Lets get on with the bad first: 1. The staff aren't the nicest people in the world. They aren't terribly rude, but they definitely don't give off a friendly, inviting vibe. 2. SO expensive: $20 per lane +$20 per hour+ $13 a pizza adds up fast. 3. Our waitress didn't tell us (and it doesn't say anywhere on the menu) that all the drinks EXCEPT the lemonade have free refills. She did not tell us this until our 3rd pitcher... The Good: 1. The pizza was really tasty! I totally dug the fact that all of their dishes and pizzas are centered around the organic, health conscious movement. I didn't expect it so it was a very pleasant surprise. 2. Shoe rentals were only $2 each. Our group had a lot of fun, especially since many of us had never played candlestick bowling before. We weren't huge fans of the old school tally-up-the-points-yourself thing, but that just helped make it more fun and less competitive. It's a small little venue, with half of it cut off for the restaurant area, but it's a good vibe. If I'm able to muster up a big enough group in the future, I wouldn't mind coming here again. Candlepin bowling, you say? Last Friday was my first experience with candlepin, which was probably the most minimalist bowling experience ever. Seriously. There are no frills to be had at Sacco's. -You must reset your own pins (albeit with the push of a button). -You must keep your own score. No fancy-schmancy computerized scoring or monitors here. Thus, I can't make up display names such as "Poo" or "Ass" for the delight of the other bowlers. -There's also no booze, which probably would have helped me keep more accurate scores. Or maybe not. -Also, Moonlight Bowling (which takes place after 9 pm) apparently means that the employees flip a switch and one of those crazy lights with pink, green, yellow, and blue cels that swivels all over the place goes into action. Crazy! The jukebox is solid, it's cheap ($2.75 per string per person before 5 pm?, and $3.00 per string per person after that), and apparently the staff look the other way when you don't purchase socks to wear in your bowling shoes. This more than makes up for my ineptitude at all things concerning balls. Make of that what you will. read more

In the dark corners of Sacco's pool hall listening to "Crazy Train" on the jukebox, I used to imagine the town that Somerville used to be. A town that, at least in the Davis Sq. area, is slowly giving way to certain trends. And though I am excited about the transformation, I can't help but feel a bit bittersweet about what's been left behind. Don't get me wrong. There's still the old Candlepin bowling (yay!) and a nice low-key vibe that makes this a go-to place for families, hipsters, and everyone in between. The new flatbread pizza place is right on. Much more so than some other places I've tried lately. Crispy, chewy and hitting all those buzz words related to organic good-for-you tastiness. It was truly a feat fItting in a full bar, flat-bread pizza restaurant (those stoves are really pretty freaking cool), AND bowling given the space they had to work with. But if you're sensitive to these sorts of things, you may be frustrated by navigating the long, tight bar space or the restaurant seats that don't seem to be a standard height. I highly recommend checking out the Sacco's. You'll find me at the bar, reminiscing about days gone by. With a microbrew in hand, of course. ;) read more

If you're looking for old-school Somerville, Sacco's Bowl Haven is probably a good place to start. One room has a number of ancient bowling lanes, some of which don't seem to work very well (which is part of the charm, I guess). Another room has pool tables where both college kids and older locals can be seen racking 'em up. This is not a pretty place; indeed, it is dank, musty, and completely lacking in any trendiness (which ironically makes it a trendy spot to some). But it is a fun spot to go to while in Davis Square, and certainly a cheap night out. read more

My friend snuck a box of wine in and the songs on the jukebox never stopped. We wore blue and red shoes. Yes, they were ugly, but we all wore them as a sign of solidarity. The Good: Candlepin bowling and pizza is a GREAT combination. Candlepin bowling if you haven't tried it is super fun. It's like regular bowling and ski ball had a baby. It's addictive. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the pizza's and root bear floats are pretty tasty The Bad: Both times I've been here I've experienced notably bad service. The first was with a group and it was a busy night so it seemed understandable. They messed up one order and forgot another person's order all together - both those weren't fixed until near the end of the meal. The second time the restaurant was pretty much empty and there seemed to be a lot of wait staff around but we were waited on by someone who seemed like the manager who was also doing a bunch of other things and basically forgot about us. That said....I'd suggest going for a game of bowling...but if you're not starving avoid dining there and get dinner in one of the great nearby places in davis. read more

I was missing the old Milkyway Lanes in JP... which is what brought me to Sacco's... looking to fill that candlepin void. The pizza was ok... the beer selection was fairly decent and the bowling wasn't a HUGE rip off... but there is a a severe lack in ambiance. This review is coming from somebody that knew Sacco's before the Flatbread addition and after. First, I got kind of upset when Sacco's sold themselves out and converted to half resto half candlepin alley. I've been to the bowling alley before Flatbread about two times, and I enjoyed the ease of access to the lanes, not having to wait that long to bowl. Now with Flatbread, you have to wait 3-4 hours to bowl, and this time could be killed at the restaurant or at the bar. On a weekend, you wait a very long time to bowl because everyone decides to that beer/pizza/bowling is a good Saturday night activity; on a weekday, it's not so bad, but there's still a wait. After sucking up the suckiness of the wait and being at this mutt of a bowling alley/resto/bar, I came to realize and understand the goodness of the whole place: First, the bar at Flatbread has a pretty good selection of local and craft brews. The cocktails they concoct, though a bit pricey but on the normal value of what I'm used to seeing [$9]) are delicious, and they come cold and hot in temperature (which is pretty good during the wintertime). Secondly, the pizza I think isn't too bad -- I like the crust a lot, but think it could be cheaper (though I think the whole local/organic ingredients have a lot to do with it). Thirdly, the bowling is quite the same, though I think it's starting to get more worn down. Sometimes the balls have a hard time getting back to you because they lose momentum, and the balls themselves are chipping away. I don't mind the ball thing, but I guess if I'm paying $25/lane, I would hope there is some maintenance that they're doing. Anyway, not a bad place to hang -- if you come here with the mindset that you will wait, and will be paying a little bit more than what you think you should, then you'll have a good experience. Oh, and please don't bring your kids here on a Saturday night -- this place has a bar. We came here on a night and bowled on a lane with parents that thought it was a good idea to bring their bratty little kids to bowl with their adult friends -- it turns out the kids were hogging all the balls and crying when they didn't get a chance to bowl. I felt sorry for the parents' friends, who probably had to foot some of the bowling bill for the parents who couldn't control their kids, but moreso for me and my friends, because the little brats would reset our lanes in the middle of our turns!
