Here's the bad news: It's not the Saddle River Inn, though the same people own both. Here's the good news: you can actually get a reservation at the cafe, without getting up at midnight a month in advance like you do to reserve a table at the Inn. The food is good, although not comparable to the Inn's, and the menu is quite limited. The "wedge" salad is very good, with an unusual presentation. My truffle burger was excellent, and my wife's tuna was good, although she said she wished the portion were bigger. Service was prompt and cordial, and the chef was very accommodating in modifying his usual preparation to meet my wife's dietary needs. Overall, very good -- if there were a few more choices on the menu, it would be 5-star. BYOB. Any credits or gift cards you have from the Inn cannot be used here. read more

I am struggling with this review. This cafe has a great reputation. I have been there for dinner. And I would say that the food is excellent. I have been for brunch/lunch three times, and have been consistently underwhelmed. Today the eggs Benedict came room temperature, probably sitting for some time. The English muffin was not toasted. Always a solid, strong dining experience. BYOB too. Started with a new menu addition .. baked feta (honey, little garlicky) which was delicious.. Ordered flank steak noodles dish that carried lots of distinctive flavors and tasted great. Table had salmon, burger and as before, everyone really liked their meals. The food was excellent, made well and with extra caring touches that catapulted it into five star category. We sat outside under a covered area that was nicely done. It's set back in a little shopping center, but it's far enough away from the road that you can hear your dining partner and enjoy peaceful dining, as so often outdoor dining these days has cars whizzing past. The restaurant is BYOB which helps keep the cost down, but the price point for dinner is what you would pay in a fine restaurant. That should not stop you if you plan to eat outside as the food is wonderful. Indoor dining is of course excellent re the food, but it's quite casual and can get very noisy. We started off with pizza bread that had onions, cheese and truffle oil? on it- sublime! Highly recommend you share as it's rich and a lot of food. Next for dinner I had mussels in white wine garlic sauce which was touted as an appetizer ($22) but was plenty for dinner. Excellent. Stay away. Both the quality of the staff and the taste of the food fall well below reasonable expectations based on the prices they charge. The staff is not trained. I could write a list 20 or so points long, but the takeaway is that the service is as unfocused as the manager. The server was useless. Forgetting the details of our order, not brining silverware for the entrée course, not checking in, not being paying attention to our drinks, etc. There was food on the floor, the table top was annoyingly wobbly, the music was oscillating from loud to soft with each song, the lights were too bright for a dinner service, the manager asked the table next to ours if they wanted ketchup while there was already a large bottle on the table, and he was nice enough to bring us a bottle of water but forget to put it on the bill. Nothing that happened tonight was the staff's fault; The blame lies with management. The service staff has no training, and the kitchen either doesn't taste the food or doesn't know what it is supposed to taste like. The food was all bland and tasteless. The lingering taste in my mouth was the bitterness of the dirty fry oil used to cook the falafel. Do yourselves a favor: eat somewhere else. I came here for my dad's birthday dinner tonight and our entire family had such a lovely time. AMAZING food, cozy yet trendy vibe, and impeccable service. I felt right at home. We ordered the burrata, beet salad, mussels, and crispy artichokes for appetizers. Everything was so good! The complimentary focaccia bread was spot on. My dad had the pork chops and my brother had the fish. My mom and I opted to skip the entreé because we were so full! But the tiramisu dessert with espresso ice cream was to die for. Did I mention... We came for a day earlier than Mother's Day for brunch around 10:20am. The place wasn't crowded which was nice. The decor was super modern and clean. We ordered the brunch special (wasn't on the menu) which was a chicken fried pork with fried egg. Husband said it was great. The batter was corn flakes as it was described to me so I couldn't order it because it wasn't gluten free. Instead, I had the southwest scramble without the corn cake (also not gf). It was super delicious and filling. We had the short stack for the kids and hubby really liked their pancakes. The orange juice came with an orange juice ice cube which was creative! We made a last minute reservation for a girls night out. At 630 it was still pretty quiet for a Thursday, but the place is small so it worked out well staff were very attentive, and described dishes they had tried well. I ordered the home made ginger ale, which I liked because the ginger syrup was strong. For an entree I did the Asian noodle salad with steak. I'm not sure why I was expecting cold noodles, but the hot noodles were good and it had a spicey sauce with pieces of mango in it. My friend had the crab cakes, and did the cole slaw from the appetizer instead of the asparagus that normally comes with it. We split the old bay fries, which were yummy because we love shoe string. We just did lattes and tea for dessert but they did have options. I would've given 5 stars if they had a more diverse menu. This is the first time we had gone there. It seem like a very nice, quaint, European style café with a nice touch of gourmet coffee stations. This place seems to be famous and popular with the local crowd, we saw many people they are having a drink and dinner but looked quite dressed up. The name is A little misleading from that point of you, we did enjoy our food. It could be on the pricier side but they have an interesting menu selection and there is some thing for everybody. The staff was nice and courteous, we sat there past the closing time for a little while and there was no rush. We will definitely revisit. read more

1 star for communication. We were placed on a waitlist and told the wait would be 30 minutes. After about 35 minutes, our party decided to walk in to ask regarding the reservation. We were told that we couldn't be seated due to an event. Anyone could understand why this is extremely frustrating and unnecessary, I thought perhaps a phone call to let us know our reservation was no longer granted would be nice. We've been coming to saddle river for years. Recently, we had lunch there and the food was off and cold. It took an hour to get served, wait staff never checked on us, very unprofessional. The manager NEVER came over to apologize that I didn't like the lobster roll. To me that is really poor management. Let's break it down: 1) Ambiance: the place is beautiful, cool and clean 2) Service: much like the saddle river inn, their staff is extremely polite, professional and helpful 3) FOOD: absolutely impeccable, creative, delicious and lots of healthy options ! Their omelets are soooo good ! (I don't even care much for omelettes usually). And they have fresh squeezed orange juice ! 4) I heard some people say it was expensive, but I disagree.
