Parking is limited in front but additional parking can be found in the back of the building. You'll find that the owner/waiting staff very friendly and helpful. The restaurant can get busy during the lunch hour. If so, consider take it out. The menu is simple offering several combinations of Japanese dishes. Pricing is reasonable and the food tasty. I didn't offer any pictures but our small party ordered tempura bento combinations with either chicken teriyaki or sesame. If you aren't actively looking for this place, it's actually really easy to miss. Ordered a few items just to try them out. Picked up the calamari, shrimp tempura and eggplant tempura for appetizers. They come pre-sauced which isn't to my liking, but it wasn't too bad. I'm not big on sweet sauces and there was unagi/teriyaki sauce drizzled up top. Ordered the bibimbap and it was almost salad like. It came with a heaping amount of lettuce which I'm not particularly used to. But there was more lettuce than there was rice. There wasn't enough flavor to me, nor was I given any additional sauces to add. Ie-sesame oil or red pepper sauce. So that was a slight disappointment The stir fried noodles were just ok to me. Found this place on YELP close to the Justice Center where we had an appointment. Don't let the location scare you away. It is right next to a gas station and a couple other buildings. We noticed they had a lot of take out orders. The menus are already on the table, so we were ready to order when the waitress came to our table. My husband had a Noodle Bowl and I had a Teriyaki Chicken box. My husband loved his dish and mine was also delicious and there was so much, I had enough for lunch the next day. This restaurant is located near a cross street to Folsom Blvd between Howe and Watt. Normally, it's very easy to pass by and never notice it or the bagel place 2 doors down from it. However, I was actively scanning for a takeout meal after work. I stopped here for the teriyaki short ribs lunch plate and the salmon teriyaki to-go. I waited outside while the food was prepared (This being the era of the pandemic). I had never been here before. I've been making a point of trying new places for take-home lunches. This place was a nice surprise. The serving portion size was decent. The short ribs were savory, hot, and very delectable. Umami satisfying. The salmon was pretty good, as well. Five stars for this modest neighborhood spot based on the Korean menu items and the friendliness of the staff. I don't really order the Japanese menu items, it's not that they're bad (I steal some tempura when someone else orders it, as any good friend would) but I just agree with the other review that said the Korean items are more of a stand out. Then again maybe I just like them more than I like teriyaki. And who can say where the line is drawn, anyway? Not me. I usually get the bibimbap, spicy, with whatever protein I'm feeling that day. Big portion, I think it's still good value for the price even now that food has gotten so expensive. Some places will serve you a bibimbap that's mostly rice, which is cheaper than produce - not here. I think the balance of rice to everything else is just right. The staff speak English with a fairly strong accent but despite this I can only remember one time that I got the wrong item, and it turned out to be my fault, because I literally said "bulgogi" when I meant to say "bibimbap." Womp womp! I still ate it and enjoyed it! Despite how small the place looks, there is a back room with extra dining space past the counter. I'm not sure if it's reservation only but sometimes when I have come in I've seen larger groups back there having a good time. read more

This place is money! I get the tempura and sesame chicken combination every time I go here. Why? Because it is so damn good I worry that if I order something else I will be disappointed. The service was friendly and our items were packaged well. When we got home, we dug in. We ordered some calamari and potstickers to share. We both felt that the calamari was a little chewy. They serve Korean/Japanese menu items. I finally came here after reading all the good reviews. I knew I was getting the sizzling beef bibimbap. It was great as others in our party enjoyed the salmon bibimbap, jalapeno and mushroom tempura as well. The owner was really nice and took good care of us. A really nice family-owned Korean/Japanese place. All the food is good (the ramen broth is amazing) but it's the Korean food that shines. The dolsot bibimbap, called "sizzling rice bowl" or something like that on the menu, was especially great. My kids loved the kimbap and the housemade kimchi, too, which was super fresh. Great service, very good prices, and large servings. Don't let the modest outside or the fact that it's next door to a gas station deter you ... the food here is legit and it's as good as many of the other Koreatown restaurants further down Folsom Blvd. They also have good Korean beers if the food is too spicy for you :) I'm kind of surprised I hadn't been here earlier, but will definitely be back! read more

This took me a while to decide on the stars I was going to give. It was either going to be 2 or 3 but I decided to do 2 SOLELY because of the customer service. The food is a complete 5 star!! So I've been coming here for many many months now. The first time I've ever came here the expierence was amazing. The lady was extremely welcoming to me, sweet, had the biggest smile on her face and everything! I did make a review after that expierence and I gave it a total of 5 Unfortunatly, the next time after that and the time after that and that... the customer expierence was horrible. The smile was gone and her friendliness was gone. I was so confused. Did we not tip her enough last time? Did we say something wrong to her? Did she have a traggic life event happen that scewed her personality THAT much? For example: she never smiles anymore, she mugs me boyfriend and I from afar, she'll try to kick us out of the restaurant 30 min before they close, never refills our water, asked if we can have straws and never brings them to us. We felt like we were such a burden to her life! To the point where when we needed siracha sauce we were like fuck this I'm just going to get up and find it myself. I feel like this bothers me greatly because we give her so much of our business because their food is so damn delicious but damn that customer service she gives us should be freaking illegal! read more

What is this dive?? I saw the front and it looks like a dive restaurant. But remember not all dives are the same! It is wedged between a gas station and a donut shop. Walking in it is not fancy in the least, but remember what you mom told you growing up, "Don't judge a book by its cover!" Well well let's start with the water and appetizer. They come out with what appears to be iceless water. It is, however it is ice cold! I see calamari for $4 and some change, so I figure it's ok to order. Out comes this fancy looking dish with 6 slices of calamari rings and the seasoning sauces drizzled on top. The calamari is not rubbery at all. In fact it is so good, my kids were fighting over the last slice, and they are used to eating at 4 star restaurants. I ordered Dol Sot Bimbimbap. The veggies were cooked but slightly crisp and not soggy. They did not have the raw egg to mix in, but instead a thinly sliced egg omelette. It was very good! The spoiled kids with me who frequent good restaurants said the food was so good. The sesame chicken I tasted was tender and not over cooked. Stopped in here recently as a recommendation from a friend. We ordered tempura boxes, she had the teriyaki chicken and I had the sesame chicken. Both were delicious, and reasonably priced. It's a small place, but very cozy and charming. There are pictures all over the walls of their loyal customers that have obviously been going there for years (some of the pictures were quite old). But that's a good sign! It means this place has been around for a while and definitely doing something right for people to be loyal customers for so long. Order to go or dine in with tables for 4 set up in the front and a large room in back for more seating that can accommodate birthdays, anniversary party or even at lunch meeting. What to order ?? Any combo box with tempura , sides kimchi ,potstickers and jalapeño tempura. I would also suggest their Sizzling Bibimbap stir fry veggies over rice with your choice of protein like mines with spicy sauce. Sounds simple, yet tantalizes my taste buds more than I could've ever imagined. This hidden gem, is cramped between a donut shop, a nail shop, and a gas station/car repair shop - finding this in mini-suburbia, was like hitting the jackpot. Its been a family staple (not just the four of us, but all 30 of us) for years now, when they closed for about 4 months, it was a detriment to our dinner routines. Although I am loyal to #13, I have tried many a different numbers and dishes alike. I've enjoyed their Teriyaki salmon, their sushi (which they no longer serve, boo), all versions of tempura...all continue to taste delicious, without compromising freshness and authenticity. The owner is like another little Asian grandma in my life. She is sweet and recognizes us on the phone and smiles so big when we walk in the door. We've been coming to Sae Jong for years . The food is consistently delicious, the take out is a great way to have lunch or dinner if you don't know what to have, and for us, they're nearby. The only mark against them is that they're a two person shop, so when they get busy things get a little backed up. In current conditions that is less of a concern. But I don't think this last forever and you are in a hurry in the future, just be aware that you may have to wait. I can't give them a 4 and a half but that's where they fall. read more

Don't let this hidden gem go to waste! Another go to for week night dinners. We've been going here for about 5 years now and love it! At first it was a little sketch because Of the location but so glad we took that risk lol. We always order their sesame chicken and tempura bento box which comes with rice and a salad. Very filling! Also I've had their sizzling bimbap and their portion is huge I had to save the other half for my lunch the next day. Saejongs is one of my favorite Korean/Teriyaki spots ever, not just in sac! It is homecooked, authentic and absolutely deliciousness. It is a family owned company, and looks like a small restaurant but there is actually a big room towards the back for large seating! I typically order the sesame chicken box that comes with salad and tempura which is amazzzzinggg and so filling! The tempura and sesame chicken is perfectly fried and the teriyaki sauce... oooh.. is so yummy! Not to sweet or too salty! This time i ordered the Korean spicy bibimbap, which comes on a sizzling plate, it has the perfect amount of spice too! This restaurant is almost never super busy so you should be seated in no time. All my life going back and forth in Folsom blvd. there's this small mom and pop shop that is probably overlooked and passed on because of its location. The parking for this place is kinda small because it's in a small building next to a gas station and a hair salon. But boy do I love a good mom and pop shop and this place serves both Korean and Japanese food. So you have many choices. For appetizer they offer a variety of gyoza and tempura. What caught my eye on the menu was the jalapeño tempura and the yam tempura. I'm definitely going to try those next time I go. But this time a friend and I just stayed off with their calamari which are fried squid rings for 4.95 you get about 8 pieces I think. It was pretty good because they drizzled it with teriyaki sauce and what tasted like spicy mayo. For my meal I got the sizzling bibimbap $9.50 with beef (+$1) and with Cheese (+$1) spicy served on an iron skillet. Without the extra costs you can choose chicken as a protein and you don't have to get it spicy if you don't want. If it seems like this bibimbap doesn't have egg well it does, and it's fried in a shredded like manner instead of a fried egg on top. The bibimbap itself was very traditional and very filling. So much flavor with the veggies and the rice. My friend got the teriyaki bento box which came with a salad and mixed tempura (a very standard bento) but he said it was really good as well. You can tell this place has been around for a long time because they have picture of heir customers from what seemed like the 80s on their walls for decorations so it adds a nice touch to the place. The server lady was a super sweet and friendly Korean lady who definitely cares about her customers and that's always a plus when coming to mom and pop shops. Overall experience 5/5 Would I come again? Definitely Would I recommend to a friend? Well I'm recommending it to you. So go try it! read more

Sae Jong's is a no-frills teriyaki spot that has consistently good food. Everything I've ever ordered here has been amazing and served in generous portions. I will say, it's best to come in and order, even if you plan on taking it to go, because I called in an order and had to correct it when I got there. It was no worries though because they were able to remedy my problem really quickly! Just FYI, parking is TOUGH here, but I believe there is street parking on the side of the building. We get acknowledged right away with a table, menus, and water. Greeters are always smiling. We go before dinner crowds so our food is usually delivered right away and it's always hot! We never go away hungry but we always order the teriyaki yams as an extra. The food is fresh, the restaurant is clean, and there is extra parking on the side street to the left. I don't eat fish and I can't eat if I smell it. I do Not smell any fish at this restaurant. I like a mildly sticky (sushi) rice and this cooked rice is impeccable! All the pictures of happy customers on the walls is endearing--so this restaurant has good karma. It is comfortable and welcoming and it is our FAVORITE place to eat out! read more
