Used to be a decent spot, but something has changed at Mikasu. I came here for lunch today and the experience was highly disappointing. First, they might be understaffed (one server, one sushi chef, maybe one in back kitchen) making food service slow. The waitress tried her best, but she was clearly left on her own to wait on the sushi chef. However, the communication was lacking; when asked about a tiny portion size for the seaweed salad, she didn't really know how to respond and just gave a dismissive answer. I just wanted to know if it was meant for two or a single side. It looked smaller than normal. The food execution was also off--our salmon skin hand rolls were served sitting in a sticky sauce, making it awkward to pick up and leaving our hands a mess (I thought hand rolls were supposed to be dry on the outside wrapping) The biggest red flag was the bill. Every single a la carte item we ordered was priced 25+ cents higher on the receipt than what was printed on the menu. When questioned if the menu prices went up, the waitress seemed completely uninformed and claimed the owner includes tax in the item price--yet regular tax was still added to the final total anyway. They also charge extra for using a card. The math doesn't add up (or it's just plain confusing), the food service is slow, and management isn't giving their staff the information or support they need. Sucks to write this review as this used to be my go to spot for lunch. It's taken me a while to get to this review but I had to give others a heads up. I would often come around noon during the week, and order the Thai chicken bento box. Unfortunately one of the days I came, I found a fingernail in the California roll. Bit into the roll, and the fingernail as well. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Immediately lost my appetite and wanted to throw up. I flagged my server down (all the employees here are super nice), and showed her the fingernail. She took it to the back and reported it to a manager or supervisor I suppose. When she came back she told me that their California rolls are pre-made, so if you're ordering these rolls BE CAREFUL. She offered to remake the bento box to which I shared no. I asked for my tab and when she came back she said it was on the house and did not ask me to pay (nice gesture, but I mean when you find a whole fingernail in your food, that's the least that can be done). Safe to save, I have not gone back since then and probably won't. If I did, I'm definitely staying far away from the California roll. This happened to me last year, so hoping some changes in their hygiene and making of California rolls have been made since then. read more

Our first time going since it changed to Makisu Sushi. Everything inside was as I remembered. They had a movie playing on one TV and the World Series on another. We were greeted when we walked in and seated immediately. We ordered drinks and took our time looking over the menu. I ordered my go-to BBQ Albacore Tuna and a side of white steamed rice. Their BBQ Albacore was absolute perfection! It's lightly seared and melts in your mouth. And I'm used to it being served with a creamy sauce, so I was pleasantly surprised with their sauce! I tend to favor deep friend and or spicy rolls, so I started there first but the sushi roll "favorites" section was really helpful. Since they all had pictures along with the description. My friends ordered 5 different rolls that I don't know the names of, and two were deep fried. My girlfriend and I ordered the following: Drinks Green tea Appetizers Spicy Edamame Rolls 10. Brenda's Favorite 17. Danielle's Special In total we ordered 7 different rolls, and I tried probably 5/7. The deep rolls were good, and so was my Danielle's Speciall roll and my girlfriends Brenda's favorite roll. I also really enjoyed the spicy Edamame as well. Our waitress was really noce amd friendly and entertained my friend's young daughter who joined us for dinner. The only "hiccup" or minor delay was our aroumd our 2nd order of green tea. My girlfriend ordered some when we initially at our drinks orders taken, and a few minutes later my friend decided to get some ad well. But the 2nd order took a while to receive, and we had to ask about it again at one point. Have been here a few times thanks to a friend of mine for suggesting it. Each time I've been the food has been really good and the service too. The sushi is tasty, love the wakame salad, and the gyoza is good either steamed or fried. The spicy edamame is also really good, it's a balanced flavor of spicy and sweet. The restaurant is a nice size with lots of booths to sit in. Lots of parking and in a convenient location. Want to come back to try some new items. read more

You get what you pay for. A little disappointed by this place, 4-star, 500+ reviews and yet I left feeling that I could spent my time and money elsewhere. Came here for a quick dinner with the family, simple items, things we wrongfully assumed were safe bets. Upon walking in, was immediately struck by the lack of any decorations -- a precursor to the blandness of our food (more to come). Beef Udon, Lemon Salmon Roll and a Lion King Roll. Everything was average at best. The two rolls were very basic, the fish didn't taste fresh and even at the 50% off price I didn't feel they were worth it. The Lion King roll specifically, didn't give off the impression that it was "baked in the oven". My wife got the Beef Udon, soup was bland, beef was tough/rubbery and overall the bowl just lacked flavor. Service wise, even that was just okay -- the waitress was nice but seeing as the restaurant wasn't that busy, she could have come to check on us a little bit more. Quick comment on the wait for our food too, Beef Udon came out fairly quickly but then we had to wait another 15 minutes for the rolls to come out. Not sure what took so long, seeing as it wasn't that busy when we were there. Overall, pretty disappointed in this place -- I think the 2-star rating is generous. Visited Sac State and wanted to try a new resto. This sushi spot hit my radar as it was on the way home. When in the parking lot, I saw a sign for a drive-thru for order pick up. I was quite surprised how busy it was - the environment added to the positive experience. You could hear staff engaging with customers - just a good vibe. Service was great. Didn't have to wait long for the server to take our order, and the food came out in good time. The frequent check ins were timed nicely - especially for the water refills. I drink a lot of water and didn't have to once ask cause the server kept a good eye on cup levels. I ordered the salmon, tuna and hamachi sashimi. It came with miso soup and rice. I also ordered the Fire roll. I enjoyed my order. The sashimi was a decent thickness, fresh, and chilled. Other spots Ive been too give room temp, so this was nice to receive. The salmon was my favorite - it was fatty, buttery. At first glance of the Fire roll (no picture in menu) I was expecting a bigger roll but given the simplicity of the ingredients, size didn't matter. It was perfect! The jalapeño and sriracha was the perfect kick. Devoured everything. My friend ordered a rice-less roll. Forgot the name but presentation was nice so I took a pic. We've been coming here for many years and it's always been good. Tonight we went for dinner and the service was sooo slow. We received our appetizers and then we sat for an hour. When we finally asked our server, she just said it's taking a long time because they have a lot of take out orders. She didn't apologize or check on our food. It totally lame that take out orders came before dine in, and I could see customers picking up take out and there was not that many. We eventually received our food and it was okay. Not bad, but not as good as it usually it. When we got our bill, my husband noticed they charged $5 to use a credit card, and we were charged more for the rolls than the menu price. When we asked about the price discrepancy, our server explained the price is higher because it includes the tax. However, tax was also added on top of the subtotal. The explanation didn't make sense so I decided to check and I added up every item on my phone calculator. It added up to the subtotal, with the extra tax on top. I went back to the server and explained if tax was added to each item, we were also charged additional tax. She sounded annoyed and she said she will remove a roll. It feels like they are upcharging customers, saying the tax is included, and hoping nobody notices. I also think there should be a sign letting customers know BEFORE they order that there is a $5 additional charge for using a credit card. I don't know if there has been a change in ownership recently, but Makisu is not the same. We use to like Makisu as much as Mikuni's but after this we won't be back. read more

I love coming here, have been for a few over 6 years. Sometime I eat in sometimes in order and pick up. Tonight I placed an order a little after 6pm I got an email saying the order would be ready at 6:36. I arrive a few minutes early and am told it's not ready please drive around an we will bring it out. So I wait 15 part the order time they gave me. I call and ask what's the hold up only to be told they are "still working on it" there are few cars In the lot and I was told it will be another 15 min before it's ready. Been quite a few times, they just redid their menu, the prices are still one of the best in the area and the servers are friendly and attentive to refills. I got the roll + nigiri combo with soup/salad. One complaint is that it's annoying trying to figure out what is in the traditional rolls because there is no description on 10 of those rolls. I looked up what they were but it wasn't that standardized between links or pictures and what my phone search said is different from how some were described. read more

My wife's order came much spicier than anticipated and although it should not have, it surprised her by being deep fried. Would have been nice if this would have been pointed out by the waitress beforehand(I get it; its not her responsibility, but that's how they earn their tips, right?). I've noticed a trend of business pushing thru their 3.5% creditcard cost of doing business on to the consumer, which is what Makisu did. Also, its tip guide bases its "recommended tips" on taxed values (a no-no) which equates into a sneaky 10% increase in the tip amount. I've been several times and enjoy their appetizers and assortment of raw and non-raw rolls. The spicy edamame is always a must at our table! Service is exceptional and accommodating. I asked for a fork for someone inexperienced with chopsticks, and staff were quick to assist. I always feel well taken care of here. Staff make sure you have whatever you need, whether it's wasabi, ginger, or maybe another order of rolls! My favorites are the Fresh Prince (new), Crazy Horse, and Crazy Roll. My favorite sushi restaurant! Makisu is a staple for me and bf. There's ample seating, one side of the restaurant accommodates large groups. They have soju and sake for alcoholic drinks. It can get a little chilly inside so I recommend something to cover up. Service has always been fine. But as far as food goes, we love the following items and would def recommend: 1) Smokey Joe nigiri - bit pricey but hands down worth it- super flavorful and melts in your mouth 2) Mexican roll - has a little kick in it due to jalepenos and sriracha 3) lemon salmon roll - provides nice balance and makes the meal less heavy because it has a lemon slice on top 4) naked salmon - a lighter option with no rice 5) king spider roll - just a classic and it's done well here And generally I love lion king rolls but I'd go elsewhere for it, it's just mediocre here. read more

They had a menu of 50% off rolls even on a Saturday night. It had a great selection and both we had were tasty. The star of the show was the Brenda roll. It was named after our wonderful server. If I had one complaint was the decor or lack of decor. From outside, it looked like an old fast food joint. Inside was sparse but clean. It had a definite 'hole in the wall vibe'. When I was growing up this location was a Wendy's and I've always had a hard time getting that out of my mind. Pre Makisu it was another sushi restaurant that never seemed to have great reviews and always had a grand opening sign, but once Makisu opened we started hearing good things. My friend actually started going here because of the prices! She said the sushi was amazing and it was much more reasonably priced than the other sushi places nearby. We decided to try it out and have been going ever since! The sushi is great and the fish is always fresh! The rolls are also the size where you can actually stick the full piece in your mouth as opposed to massive pieces where you try and take a bite and everything goes everywhere. Our favorites are the Howe roll, Kawaii Chan, and the Lion King (but ask for real crab!). The udon is also delicious as are the bento boxes! The best part about this place being in an old Wendy's...you can drive through the drive thru to pick up your take out! They have online ordering or you can call in your order. If you're ordering during a normally busy time I recommend giving an extra 10 minutes on top of what they quote. The first few times I went right when it was supposed to be ready and ended up waiting for awhile - hence the 4 stars. I've never eaten inside...likely because all I can think about is the Wendy's lol but whenever we get take out, we always get take out from Makisu! read more
