No idea why all these people are belly-aching about this store. Believe me, there are far, far worse options out there. Their bakery is great and I've never went looking for something that was out of stock, except early on a Sunday morning, which, if you know anything about groceries, is the norm across the board. The staff is what it is. You don't make a lot of money in this business and management get's stretched thin, but you're not going to have a bad experience when dealing with anyone who works there. It's too bad there isn't a way to give this place zero stars. It's without a doubt one of the worst run businesses I've ever seen. They have 12 registers. It's rare more than one is open. Even today on Sunday, it was until the line to the one register was wrapping around the store they decided to open one more register. The line for the self check is just as long. That's because typical even if someone is manning that area, they are oblivious to the light flashing when someone needs assistance. No one that work here cares about anything. Which always falls back on management. Whoever runs this place should definitely try to get this place in order. I only come here because it's so close to my house. But it's never worth it. The amount of time I'd save by driving across Bowie to any other store is always a much faster experience. Save yourself the me and aggravation. Go to any other gocery store in Bowie. read more

Be wary when purchasing cabbage in the produce section. The cabbage head was not real food, it was plastic and did not even disintegrate under high temperatures. Food quality is poor and if you are not careful, you will be consuming potential carcinogenic chemicals. Safeway, please obtain a new supplier for your cabbage produce. I've shopped at this Safeway for about 10 years now and i'm sad to say I don't think i'll be returning. For years I had no complaints, but in the last year or two it's gone downhill. It's in a super convenient spot, close to my home, but when they are out of stock of something (often) I end up having to drive to one of the other grocery stores around to get everything I want. Add their inability to adjust for long lines (again, very often) and it's really just a waste of time to come here. Years ago it would only be near holidays that the lines would go into the aisles, but now it's almost an every day occurrence. If they were smart, they'd learn from Giant's ability to keep products stocked, and from Target's ability to pull associates from all over the store to run cashier when lines get long. The one thing I'll miss about this place is the butcher. They have one gentleman who is always willing to answer my questions about meat, and to point me in the right direction, with as much information as he can provide. read more

The absolute worst meat department I have ever come across. 3 times now, IN A ROW, I have come home with chicken, got all set to cook it, open the pack and the most disgusting stench has come from it. I'm appalled at this location. Safeway is more expensive than Giant or Food Lion but I go there because it's the closest to me. So disappointing to know that I can't shop there anymore and instead will be driving to other grocery stores who have FRESH meat. On another occassion i bought shredded cheese, well before the expiration date, and when I got home and opened it, it was moldy. Save yourself some frustration and never go there. Obviously they hire people who can't do their jobs, and managers who can't properly train their staff. read more

Decided to stop by this location today due the business having a key making machine. The machine worked perfectly and was convenient. I then decided to pick up some butter lettuce and roasted chicken so I can make a salad for dinner. I ran into an employee in the produce section who was very polite and we made some small talk. Afterward I checked out at the register. The cashier clerk was very pleasant and we talked about our kids and the weather. I noticed my phone number wouldn't work in place of my safeway bonus card. I apparently lost my card and asked the cashier clerk where I can replace it. She directed me to the customer service desk...THAT'S when everything went down hill. I'm going to describe the employee due to not knowing her name and wanting customers to be in the lookout. She had a full head of gray hair that came down to her shoulders. I asked her if I could get my card replaced, she didn't really reply. I then tried to make conversation by stating my previous bonus card was pretty old. She then said "Well you should've called it in!" I was taken aback by her rudeness and immediately thought I was in the MVA (no offense to MVA employees). I kind of just shrugged off her overly abrupt manner but she then continued to apparently scold me about me about "Not calling it in!" I assumed she meant calling in my lost card? After the third time she mentioned "Calling it in!" I said "Listen, why are we going back and forth? I just want a new card" She then became silent, zapped a bonus card with her reader and handed it to me. I said thank you and as I turned to walk away she suddenly said "I JUST wanted to let you know to call it in next time.." I said okay and she said have a nice day...but it was the "Have a Nice Day" with an undertone of "F you buddy" so I responded with an exaggerated "You too!" as I walked off shaking my head. I haven't had a public confrontation like that with a rude employee in YEARS. I gave this place 2 stars because of the other employees who were very polite and engaging and the key making machine. But this lady working behind the counter at the customer service area was WAY out of line with her scolding and rude demeanor. If you decide to shop here, avoid the customer service area. read more

Sadly, this store is a big disappointment. Though it is convenient to my home, the customer service is horrible. The lines are way too long and when I ask if they can get another cashier, I am usually told that they are understaffed and people need to go on break. When they do call up another cashier, they do not make an effort to make sure that those that have been waiting the longest get to utilize the newly opened line. It would only take a moment to do this. The restrooms are usually unkempt and there needs to be a greater effort in restocking shelves. read more

I wouldn't give this Safeway any stars. Customer service is terrible- the worst ever. I am ready to check out but there is only ONE attended lane open and about 12 people with full baskets standing in line. So I walk to the opposite side of the store to use the one of the 4 self check out lanes, which were all occupied and with an additional 2 people standing in like. It's 3pm in the afternoon on a Monday. Ok so I finally get to the self check out kiosk and put in my Safeway loyalty card phone number 3 times and it's not working. The lady that was supposed to be monitoring the registers was just standing there so I had to make a gesture to get her attention for some help. I asked her to just put in the master Safeway loyalty card and she said no, she couldn't or she would lose her job. I usually shop at the Engleside Plaza Safeway in Alexandria and have never had this problem either with my phone number or with the clerk using the master card so I can get the store discounts. So she refused and set the thing up for me to once again enter my phone number which didn't work for the 4th time. Then she finally said "go ahead and scan your items and I will get the card". So the second item I scanned didn't recognize the weight when I put it on the scale and froze the computer- waiting for an attendant- who at this time was no where around. She came back a couple of minutes later and I asked for more help. She was slow, rude, did not seem to know what she was doing because she could not clear the computer for me to finish scanning my groceries. Then she started arguing with me that I was not helping matters- really? Is this happening? Frustrated and with the computer still frozen I said forget it. Left all my groceries there and. Departed the store. This is the worse experience I've ever had in a Safeway. I don't recommend this store at all. Very poor customer service and Wasted the better part of an hour here today. read more

Makes me ashamed I grew up with Safeway. No carts, then got attitude by management when asking for carts....asked for steaks and when he picked them up they were brown on the sides. Then the line is 5 carts deep. Only two regular lines open....this is Sat afternoon btw. Some stuff is good but there are some bad gaps in management here. read more

This is the worst Safeway I've ever been to. It's clean and well stocked but, there are always huge lines due to the store being WAY understaffed! They even close the self check out lanes too early! it's quicker to drive to the Giant a few blocks away, shop, check out and drive home despite the fact that I live across the street from Safeway. This place needs new management. There is only one check out clerk most of the time and the other day only 2 self check were open. The self checks are always slow. Very, very nice Safeway. Came here after my MEH Easter dinner at olive garden to do some shopping for the week. Everything was stocked very well in large quantities. Has not been overcrowded the times i've been. They have a Starbucks and a Navy Federal which is very convenient. Safeway gas is also available from this location which is usually already a competitive price and with the safeway club points can possibly receive even more savings on your gas. read more

I used to shop here regularly years ago, but was dissatisfied with their service. I returned again today and remain dissatisfied even more as things have gone further downhill. The men's restroom was very dirty with a leaking toilet and a broken toilet paper dispenser. As usual, it is very hard to get service at their Deli counter; the employees there love to ignore you, so don't waste your time there. There are a few other things I don't like about what they don't carry, but that may be more personal preference. I can go to Giant and find oyster stew and over the counter medications in convenient to open containers. I can't find them here at Safeway. As usual, there are only a limited number of cashiers to move the lines along which has been a chronic problem here. On a positive note, I would say that the quality of items and service in the meat and fish departments are very good. On balance though, I am sticking with Giant and Graul's Market in Annapolis. read more

I live near the Northview Safeway location for nearly 8 seven years and back in 2006, it was really nice with specialty items that makes it a nice supermarket to visit! But in 2015 it is just average! They have reduced the number of organic foods! The produce looks sick! The bakery side has fewer pastries. The Deli side is good but if they don't start stocking the Super Kale salad more frequently then I will come back and rate 1 star! read more

Assistant manager Drew should be fired for inappropriate comment to another store employee IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS! My spouse and I were being helped by store employee Mr. Darnel, when Assistant Manager Drew walked by asking Darnel a question without saying excuse me, as if this family of 5 weren't standing there. Darnel answered the question, but Mr. Rude assistant manager kept walking with a customer behind him and saying " thanks so much for your help, you're such a great asset to this company", while you may think this was a compliment his nasty attitude and tone of voice was anything but appropriate. People like Darnel keep customers happy, going above and beyond and still smiling. People like Assistant Manager Drew, which by the way was wearing his uniform sloppy and saggy-are what makes us question the quality of the Safeway brand along with their smart choices of selecting 'assistant managers'. read more
