Larry was our cashier tonight in the express lane. He was fast and efficient with his job despite the woman in line ahead of us who was very rude and demeaning to him. If I had been in his position I wouldn't have reacted so calmly and professionally. This Safeway is smaller than others but serves as a great local spot for quick relatively affordable groceries. I wish other customers would understand this, especially when interacting with the workers who are always efficient and polite. read more

Shopped at the Felton Safeway last night.... I have not for about a year because the way the manager treated me after informing her that the checker did not ask for my club card... I was waiting in line and the person behind me started yakking my ear off. When I got to the checker the register took a dump, so he called a manager over to fix it. I couldn't shake the person talking to me and the cashier rang me up, I paid and while loading my van I realized I did not get the 2 for ones and club prices. I went back inside and the cashier sent me to the manager who told me she could not tell what I purchased by looking at my receipt. I was told to get my food and bring it back to the store.... When I did the manager decided to walk though the store and check the prices..... I could not believe that she could not just refund and check me out again.. 20 minutes later she does just that.... I told her that I was sorry about the inconvenience, and she replied No problem, I get payed for this........ I then explained to her that I was sorry about the inconvenience it cost me.... The receipt you get without the club card is very, very vague.. Shame on you safeway.... Last night I made sure to get my club card in and got a good receipt that shows the brand/product ,Reg price and club price that I pay.. I bought ONE spiral cut ham that read on the receipt, "SFY HAM HLF SPI SL"... "RegPrice 24.31" to the right it gave me the club price of 16.18... Below that was the card savings of 8.13.. Now for some reason either the Safeway software glitched or the checker pulled a fast one but I got charged for the same ham again but this time with NO club discout. I understand that a checker can easily scan something twice, but howcome the same ham did not even get discounted... I live more than 15 minutes from this dump and spent over an hour between the 2 incidents.... Shame on you Safeway for your messed up system and for your unhappy employees who make shopping anything but a good experience. The only reason they got one star is because the manager got me a refund....... I will spend my extra time and money at Nob Hill, Scotts Valley Where they Always get it right and always are polite and happy... read more

Steve the butcher is such a kind person and great addition to Safeway in Felton! He helped me order grass-fed prime rib via phone for our Christmas dinner. When we came to pick it up he trimmed it, de-boned it, and then tied it up in butcher string with the bones re-attached for flavor. The prime rib cooked perfectly! Steve was so pleasant and upbeat while helping us. It is very refreshing to have that kind of gracious help at our local grocery store. Thanks Steve! read more

Worst shopping trips ever. I've tried a few times, because it is a little convenient at times. No matter how busy, there are 2 lanes open, and the checkers have a conversation with every single person who comes through the line. I can see that in Felton, everyone knows everyone, and they are probably related, but I don't usually have the time to stand there and listen to the checker, and his cousin talk about the big block he recently put in his Camaro. They really are a different breed in this store. So if you want to see cousins who got married, go to this Safeway, but don't be in a hurry. read more

I came down here from Boulder Creek to shop for several years because my own town lacks a real supermarket. I've made sporadic visits since then, most recently a week or so prior to writing this review (late July, 2012). This store is serviceable in that it has an adequate selection of merchandise, but the atmosphere puts me off. It's been remodeled at some point since I was a regular, which helps things somewhat. But it still has a strange vibe, and the staff aren't terribly friendly or professional. They never have been, in my experience. On a recent visit, for example, my cashier never offered any greeting or even made eye contact with me when I walked up, because he was engaged in a conversation with the cashier at the next register as he scanned my items. I had to pointedly move in to his field of view and say, "Hi! How are you?" to snap him out of it. He responded courteously enough, but I don't think he got the point. Most of the employees I've dealt with here over the years seemed to have a similar attitude of amateurish indifference. One has to wonder about the quality of the management. Reflecting the demographics of the immediate area, most of the store's clientele is very working-class. Many of the customers look like they're right out of the West Virginia coal country. I'm not saying that's bad; I'm saying it's so. I shopped here regularly until I discovered Nob Hill in Scotts Valley, where prices seem to be moderately lower and the shopping experience is far more pleasant. Positive: convenient location for SLV residents. Negative: weird vibe. read more

I don't ever shop at this location and was only here to grab a sandwich at the deli, so I can't really comment on the store itself. The people working the deli were quick and friendly, and my sandwich was good. The guy at the checkout however, looked like he wanted to strangle someone and was practically glaring at the line of customers. No "hello" or any words said. Seriously dude, if you can't even pretend to be nice or slap on a fake smile, don't work there. Thankfully the guy bagging for him was really friendly and greeted me in a genuine matter so I'll be nice and give the second star. This is my second time coming into this Safeway and the girl that I checked out with the first time was not friendly either. I don't know whats up with this location and their bad attitudes, but it's enough for me to continue spending my money on groceries at Nob Hill in Scotts Valley where I always get excellent service. read more

I'm so done with Felton Safeway!! Judging from the whopping 2 stars it has, perhaps I'm not the only one who is frustrated with them! I've shopped at this Felton Safeway for over 30 years. Known for its lack of checkers and long lines stretching back to the meat department, I still shopped there because it was convenient. I can deal with lines and the absence of checkers and baggers, but I won't take rude, condescending customer service. I've spent an average of 800-$1000 per month at Safeway for A LOT of years. Today I went in to return something I'd purchased exactly 30 days ago, seasonal, on clearance. There was no mention anywhere that all sales were final or you have X amount of days to return. The tags were intact on the items, I had the receipt, and I can't even remember a time I've EVER returned ANYTHING to Safeway. I got in line and a very unfriendly employee named Kelly asked if she could help me. I said I had two things to take care of. The first was just going be a $6 price adjustment - a clerk had not seen the red sticker last week so I was overcharged. Kelly made me feel like i shouldn't be bothering her, and without fixing the first issue, barked "what's your second issue?" There was no mention of an "I'm sorry" or anything even close. I pulled out the two seasonal items - which they still have on display in the front of the store in the clearance basket (it wasn't like I was trying to return Easter merchandise in December!) The issue was that when I had first purchased the items - $37+ portion of a $161 biIl - I had asked the checker how much the items were since they were on clearance. The clerk replied "not that much. I rang one up at about $5 earlier." I was fine paying $5 each. Unfortunately I didn't double check my receipt until a week later, and with husband soon to have surgery, a daughter's wedding to attend and a grandson coming any day, life was a little busy in November and it took me 30 days to bring the items back. But when I told Kelly what the clerk had said about the items being $5 each and instead charged $17+ each, I could tell from her sour demeanor that she was going to make things difficult. She scowled at the items and the receipt and then launched into a story about how people who need money are now going through their shelves at home just to look for things to return to get money. She also said Safeway wasn't taking returns due to the fact that too many people are returning things. The amount of disdain that was oozing across the counter was extremely unpleasant. I asked if I could talk to a manager about the return. She goes in the back very briefly and comes back saying Celia agreed - Safeway wasn't taking returns due to the number of people returning things to get cash! What?! Definitely offending. I'm not sure she even talked to anyone, and she refused to let me talk to the manager. She then told me I should "give the items to friends or something." It's obvious that Kelly has never had any customer service training and is undoubtedly Safeway's resident junkyard dog, scaring away shoppers one by one. Why on earth is someone like this running the Safeway Customer Service counter - in a small town that relies heavily on repeat business? I can assure you I won't be coming back anytime soon! read more

This Safeway is one of the smallest I have been to; so small it doesn't have its own bakery. The bread and cakes get brought in from elsewhere. It often gets crowded fast and selection is limited. it gets the job done, but depending on your needs, you might be better off going to Scotts Valley Safeway. read more

Mostly very friendly staff, but they are always out of whatever I am looking for, and the store seems... unclean. Always many empty shelves. Twice I have purchased meat that was spoiled there. Produce isn't all that either.... I mostly go here for packaged items. Make sure you lock your car as all the crackheads from the covered bridge area hang out in the parking lot, fighting and asking for "spare change". Lines always seem to be long, even early in the morning. I wish it were better, It's so close to my house- but I usually drive to Scotts Valley to do my grocery shopping instead. read more

Just got home from this store and yet again, food that was purchased was not bagged and put on my cart for carry out. This has happened to me before at this store. You have to watch like a hawk. Last week the special signs were completely hidden in the fruit section and the ones that were visible were completely confusing, to me and the produce manager. One said two watermelons for the price of one, but you couldn't find the price of one anywhere. This store runs out of everything. Forget shopping in the morning, forget shopping for small sizes of things like milk. They are always out. read more

Why does everyone compare this store with the Safeway in Scott's Valley? When this store was built so many years ago, there was concern that it was too 'suburban'. Now we snivel that it it not 'big city' enough. Those who want what Scott's Valley has should live there. This Safeway fits Felton quite well. I actually find the Safeway in Scott's Valley to be too hectic and weirdly hip. I mean, do I really need Starbuck's coffee while shopping? . . . and what is with all the dreary dark decor? Anyway, this is a great homey store with all the groceries that I need, and I do not need a modern foreign car to park out front. read more

Many of my friends and I refer to the Felton Safeway as "Ghetto Safeway", partly due to its close proximity to the much nicer Safeway in Scotts Valley, but also because it is feels kind of grungy and understocked. If it was another branded store I might give it a three star rating because the employees are nice, and for the stock that they have it's not in bad shape for a mountain town, but from what I've come to expect from Safeway stores in general it falls short of par. read more

Convenient location for when I only need a few items but it's never worth it when I have to wait in ridiculously long lines to check out. Yet I continue to go back-and it never changes. The people who work there do their best to move the lines along, but this store is seriously understaffed. Just called the deli to order 4 sandwiches to pick up and I was told I could not place my order until the two (only) people working in the deli on a Saturday filled the current orders they were working on and then take care of the 5 people waiting in line. I would have been on hold for at least 20 minutes. Called Togo's in Scotts Valley. Not only did they not put me on hold, they took my order and they had it ready in 15 minutes. I hope Safeway reads yelp and does something about this store. read more

Okay for a local market--especially for the campers that flock here in the summer. Limited selection, however, and the lines can get pretty long. Place isn't that bad, although the lines do get crazy. But overall not as bad as what all these other people are saying.

The food here is disgusting I do not recommend the breakfast burritos when I got one a couple months back it was cold and not fully cooked, another issue I have is the new manger follows teenagers around and accuses them of stealing all the time he had my daughter empty out her pockets when she only went in there to pee. He wouldn't let her leave intill she emptied her pocket having to take out her personal feminine hygiene products! read more

This store is fine for a quick stop to grab something you forgot, but keep in mind it is a smaller Safeway. I'm giving it two stars because: 1. The deli is slow. It takes a very long time to be helped and for anything to be made. The people that work behind the deli don't seem very happy to be working there either. 2. They don't check on their produce very often. I've seen very moldy tomatoes, crushed and bruised fruit, and things aren't restocked. 3. They do not have much of a variety when it comes to organic produce. 4. The cashiers sometimes air their dirty laundry to each other, which impacts customer service-- not many pleasantries are delivered. Although, there is one guy that works there that is witty and very kind. There never seems to be enough cashiers. Same with the Safeway in Scott's Valley. 5. Why does the Felton Safeway charge 25 cents to buy a grocery bag. State law says it should be 10 cents minimum...This is the minimum, so I guess they are taking advantage to make 15 cents on each bag. In fact, all the stores in Santa Cruz County charge a quarter. In Sacramento, they all charge a dime...go figure! read more

I have visited this store many times, and it is safe to say that if you want to whine about stores in your neighborhood anyone can find fault. You people ought to be thankful you have a chain store that offers great discounts instead of all the ridiculous issues you focus on. WALK outside and look at the beautiful surroundings you all have there in that parking lot. Go to any other area and if you want to find complaints they're all there. What is happening to the Safeway store in Felton? First of all the outside. I don't like even going there at night, by the type of people the parking lot attracts. I use to sometimes wake up, during the night, and to the sound of the steam cleaning cleaning the sidewalks, etc. up there. I haven't heard that in years, and by the looks of the place, I believe the only cleaning it's getting is from rain. Then the store is out of many things. For instance, today I wanted sprouts. Not a sprout in sight. So I decided to get broccoli or an artichoke instead. The broccoli had only one half broke head left. THe artichokes looked bad. The organic broccoli spears were wilted. The store in going down hill for sure! My sister just moved to this area from Scotts Valley and is afraid to shop the store at dark. I use to brag about their produce, but, lately it is so bad. The reason I am writing this today, is because I heard others complaining about the store and we started talking. Everyone says it's as though this store is going out of business. I would hate to see that, but, if it that's the case, put the dying horse down and let another store move in. read more

This particular Safeway is very dirty. The staff seem unhappy and the store is understaffed during busy times.Example-- Friday at 5 pm ( 3 checkstands open) Lines way down the aisles. Yes, it is cheap, but I don't understand why management doesn't improve the store. The staff that works there and the local community deserves it. read more

The staff at this Safeway are amazing... especially during the day. I really enjoy shopping here, even though they don't stock every item or brand that I regularly use. I do the bulk of my shopping here and always leave with a smile on face. read more

Decent Value: The sandwich meal deal (with soft drink, water and a bag of chips with the choice of a low fat variety or fruit.) It was even better when they had the fresh Country French baguette. No longer. A nice variety of different sandwich combinations with interesting toppings of your choice, which they are glad to make toasted & warm up for you. This location is unique. The store is small. They require you to purchase paper bags and this is a location that has many transient people outside and inside the store. The transient people live in the park across the street. It has become so bad that security personnel needed to be placed outside the store. I will drive another 5 minutes to drive to the Scott's valley location, if need be. read more

This Safeway is horrible. They are always out of many different kinds of products. Also really watch your expiration dates. I cannot tell you how many times I have come home to glance at the date on package of meat and it's already expired or it expires that day. (Yeah, ok, so it's partly my fault for not checking the date thoroughly first, but who wants to spend one extra minute at the stupid Felton Safeway after working all day? Plus, I have NEVER ever had problems with expiration dates at the Scotts Valley Safeway). I just came home and looked at my orange juice (!) and it expires today. Argh! Nice staff but long lines and many items I have found to be expired and still out for sale.

I pay cash for nearly everything and rarely use my Safeway card. Once in a rarely while I write a check as I did a couple of weeks ago at your store for 200$. When my Safeway card number did not come up, I was grabbed by a short, rude blonde manager. Kept waiting for 10 -15 minutes while she dealt w/ other customers, she finally got around to calling up my account which was apparently older than your system. From that moment on, she treated me like I was trying to steal from Safeway. I finally dumped the groceries and went into Scotts Valley where I had no trouble at all.
