On the 4/17/17 I went in to buy punch of items at 8:47pm I got everything I needed as I walk to the register he didn't greet me at all before he start to ring my stuffs. He ask me for a membership card and I respond that I was trying to apply for 1 at the customer service but no ones is there. He did not say anything he just told me my total which is without a discount. I asked him if he could sign me up he just took a membership card scanned it and hand it to me. I had no idea what is going on if I had a discount or not. I left the store with confusion because this clerk doesn't talk to me or explain anything to me at all. Safeway...Open 24 Hours! How much more convenient can you get?! Reading the other reviews, I've seen all of the negatives listed, but still kind of like this store. I go here often when I'm visiting and have always found the employees very friendly and accommodating. Plus, the store is conveniently located so that if Longs doesn't have what I need, Safeway does. I agree, sometimes frustrating when the shelves are bare, but in Honolulu, if one store lacks something, another store down the road probably has what u need, or I even look for a comparable brand. Plus, I've asked the manager if I could substitute other brands for stuff that was sold out and am usually met with a positive answer. The deli, yum! When they have the $5.00 fried chicken, holy smoly! There is actually a waiting list! Make plans to call or come in to reserve, cause they go fast! I know when I'm there, I'm usually good for 2 or 3 8 packs!!! What a bargain! A bargain for me! I think I will get me some!!! Like my friend Val Y does, when I get there on their $5 Fridays, I drop to my knees, cross my heart, look up and point my index fingers to heaven! I also side shuffle past the vegetables, do backflips fronting the dairy and cartwheel past the fresh poke! By that time, my fried chicken is done and I pay at the deli, and shake my booty out the front door! Mmmmmm hmmmmmm! Don't forget to sign up for your JUST FOR U! Unbelievable savings! NEVER. EVER. GO. HERE. This is hands-down the worst shopping experience of my life. It is near my house, but I'll drive an extra 10-15 minutes to Sack n Save. Things about this Safeway that suck: 1. There are not enough grocery carts. Sometimes none. How the hell does a grocery store not have carts?!? (To Safeway management: if you want to know where they are, take a walk down Ala Ilima Street. Last time I walked to Long's, I counted 13 belonging to you.) 2. The produce is rotten. And they still want to sell it to you. Full price. 3. The produce has no price tags. You have no idea what they're charging you. No one in sight to help you. 4. There are no bags for your produce. I guess it doesn't matter since you're carrying it anyway because you have no cart. 5. Two lines open during peak times. Lines 10 people deep, going down the aisles. 6. Rude cashiers. Don't expect to be greeted or communicated with in any way. One cashier has very icky scabs all over her arms. She is handling your food. 7. Manager unreceptive to above feedback when spoken with personally. Twice. 8. District manager will not return phone calls regarding your concerns for this horrible store. I starve to death before I ever go back. read more

I have Safeway envy, which means I envy everyone else who doesn't have to go to Salt Lake Shopping Center Safeway. Now unfortunately this is the closest grocery store near my home, so I have to go here. Now this 2 star is not for every Safeway just the Salt lake Safeway. I've seen the mecca of Hawaii Safeway at Kapahulu and all I can say is, "Awww man!" Every time I go to another Safeway I always say, "I wish our Safeway was like this." It seems like every safeway has gotten a faceover except this safeway. Maybe I would not have been so critical if there was no comparisons. But come on, the deli is sad (No panini), Bakery runs out of items so quickly and the produce not at the highest quality. Don't get me wrong I like Safeway, just not as this location. It does have one positive for me and it is.....its nearby. I wish there were other options near Salt Lake. So not by choice I shop at Safeway. However it does provide me with what I need...maybe not want but need. There has to be another way, for now I guess I'll show at this Safeway. read more

Ugh! Never before I have I agreed with so many 2-star reviews! This Safeway exists because there aren't any decent-sized grocery stores in this immediate vicinity. It reminds me of how when you were so excited to get out of work early that you forgot to get gas, and now it is the next morning and your tank is on E so you have to fill up at the super-priced 7-11 and bite that bullet. That's this Safeway. You were too lazy to stop at a cheaper, cleaner store to buy whatever, and now you're jammed into this ridiculous parking lot (it has more speed bumps than parking spots) waiting in long lines because there are no self checkouts. Oy! I could not possibly agree more with this ranking. It's not indicative of the other super-awesome Safeway stores on the island - that's for sure! read more

The only reason why this Safeway is still in business is because it's conveniently close. That's it. I just went to order a couple of sandwiches from their deli section for a quick lunch. As soon as I got up to the counter, it was a horrible experience. I waited around for a while before she even bothered to come over to see what I wanted. The lady working literally said, "what do you want?" In an unfriendly tone. When I told her I'd like to get their turkey pesto avocado sandwich, she walked away but I wasn't even done ordering so I said i'd also like an Italian sandwich. She stopped in her tracks, half turned back at me, rolled her eyes, and said "ok." IF YOU HATE SERVING CUSTOMERS WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE?! Once my sandwiches were done, I asked if I could make them both meals (for 1.99 extra you can get chips and a drink.) she then replied with, "well you need to bring me the chips you want and the drinks you want with it." OK FIRST OF ALL MS. GRUMPY there wasn't any of those small chip bags around. She pointed out that they were BEHIND this little refrigerating unit and I'm just thinking, how can a customer know that?!? She was so sarcastic and unfriendly I was ready to ask to speak with a manager. But then I thought, if management is this ignorant to hire a person as unprofessional as this lady, what's the point. Have been back several times since my last review. Place appears to be getting better. The produce has improved and I'm not having as many problems locating my favorite products. What irritatingly remains is that they don't open additional check outs when the lines get long. The managers usually wait until the situation is dire before they pull a person off floor to cashier. Not many great selections in the area. It'll be interesting to see what transpires in the following six months. read more

Oh Safeway, where to begin? Not all Safeway's are created equal. I love the Kapahulu and Manoa ones and I have a love hate relationship with the one on Beretania. However, I am not a fan of this one. When Safeway price matched other grocery stores, I would more often than not, do my grocery shopping at Safeway. However, when I moved out of Makiki and Safeway stopped price matching, I stopped going to Safeway. However I stopped here one day when I ran out of dog food and Target did not have the one my dog likes. If I am going to buy it, I feel like I should buy the "right" one. Anyway, it was dead on a weekday night which was nice but the store feels so old and things are scattered about. It's a smaller Safeway but not as much things that I like. I ended up buying a large bag of my dog's favorite food but it took awhile. Not only was it not in the aisle but at the end (because it was on sale), but the food had all sorts of different expiration dates. One was even next month! I am glad that I checked because my 10 lb dog is not going to eat 20 lb of food in one month! I feel that is sort of sketchy. I hope that other people check so that they don't get nearly expired food! I browsed other sections and they're not that great. They don't have as big of a bakery and produce area which is where I buy the most of my groceries. I will probably be back because of the location but that's only if it's because I really need an item that nowhere else has. So this review is ONLY about Fridays at Safeway. My sister in law turned me on to this when I arrived if you don't already have the sale paper get one the minute you walk through the doors. Now if you don't have a "club card" go to customer service and sign up to pick one up, it's free! Now proceed to shop for the discounted items for Friday only! This past week it was bacon and pork loins that brought us here. She has mentioned getting lobster tails for $5! The other items will make you rethink your eating style . . . I picked up a head of lettuce and they wanted $3.29 for it. A can of green beans was over $2!!! However read the paper, there were deals for other items but remember the back page, $5 Friday's is what it's ALL about!!!! read more

I've been going to this Safeway for a while because it's so convenient to my house, but I honestly I rather driver further and go to target. Especially with this pandemic going on. They take no extra steps to keep people safe. Now they have about only one cashier working & the line is crazy long. They do have self check out but do NOT take covid seriously. They do NOT wipe down the machine or anything after the customer checks out. They just call the next customer right to the next available self check out register. In my opinion they should start wiping the self check outs because who knows, what if the customer before them is positive with covid. To me they do not take covid seriously and it's a biggg disappointment. How are they trying to keep their customers safe if they aren't even trying to be clean !? They don't even wipe down the conveyor belt/ credit card machine where you touch to put in your phone number/ pay when you check out with a cashier. I had heard good things about Safeway, so when I had to do the "brave thing" and venture out to a real grocery store when the commissary was closed and my husband had managed to eat us out of house and home while I was on the mainland for two weeks, I figured I would just go to the closest one to my house. I was a bit surprised that this location had only two stars compared to other Safeways in the area which had much better reviews, but I figured what the hell, I'll just go in. I went to the customer service desk and got myself a Safeway card to ensure I got the sale price on things and went on with my shopping. The produce selection was very nice and well organized with all of the produce in very good shape. The one thing that disappointed me however was that the cilantro I purchased turned to complete goop in two days which is uncommon since cilantro I have purchased in other locations has typically lasted at least the week. This made for an unhappy store run in the middle of a dinner preparation which cilantro was a crucial ingredient. The store layout was a bit disorganized. For example the aisle that was labeled "water" contained no water in it and I had to ask another customer where they hid the water in order for me to locate it. The aisles were also a bit tighter and a bit more disorganized than other stores I've been in. The main reason I'm giving this place two stars is because had it not been for the fact that my cashier was paying attention I would have walked out of the store with two lemonades that had expired. As he was ringing them up, he noticed that the two Minute Maid 15 Calorie drinks from the refrigerated section had expired and he quickly voided it from my order. Should I find myself needing something from Safeway again, I will definitely drive the extra couple of miles to a different one for sure. read more

Wow this has got to be a first for me. I went to Safeway to buy some groceries and come to find rather not to find, any no shopping carts inside of the rack. I had to walk back to my car and grab a cart sitting between stalls. Can't wait to move out of Salt Lake because this Safeway and a lot of the stores at the shopping center are horrible. Worst Safeway store I've been too. Was on a quick run to buy soda, saw the buy 4 two litre bottles for one dollar each. Had to wait in line for nearly 30 minutes while other employees were just there walking around. The cashier checked me out and total was over $10!! I wasn't a member but other locations have scan their cards for me, she wouldn't and said I had to fill out a form to become a member when their were 20 other people in line. The person behind me had to let me use their members card. Another time at this same store, had to come here to grab something, waited in line for about 20 minutes. Than the cashier was talking to another employee while bringing me up, asked 3 times for the total with no answer, saw the screen, gave the cash and didn't even give correct change back while still talking to another employee. This store is kinda outdated in and out. There's only 1 regular and 1 express checkout and both always have long lines.

Limited selection on meats. I've never seen the special priced meat sales advertised in the midweek ads. I use this location only for last minute items. read more

This Safeway is located in the Salt Lake Shopping Center. It's definitely dated compared to other Safeway locations. The store itself seems like it has been changed since the day it opened. It's smaller than most other Safeway locations. Seems fairly clean for the most part. No major complaints. Parking can be a bit hectic with shoppers looking for the closest stall. The stalls seemingly smaller than I'm used to but I've made it work. I've only come here for the deli portion. I'll buy a sandwich or chicken tenders. Nothing mind blowing or makes me want to come back and order again. It's just pure convenience when I'm on the road. Customer Service: It can be hit or miss. There are days that the workers are quick to acknowledge you, other days you'll be waiting for a bit. This morning is real stupid, first of all Safeway customer service open 8:00am to 9:00pm Had me and 2 other people waiting for make money order, I got there at 8:30am and second later another person . Already had a customer before me and another customer , she been waiting for 10 minutes she said she rang the bell no one came out. So I rang the bell again then the employee came out of the customer service door walked away instead of letting us all know that their machine is not working cannot make any money order or WesternUnion but you just walk away amazing for that one. And another employee came to us to told us that the machine is not working she is a "Manager" with shoulder length hair light color highlights, older about 50 after the the fact that she was talking On Her Cell Phone and Looking at Us at the same time try to hide behind the Self Check Register and still looking and she got off her cell phone then let us know NOT WORKING because she was the one in charge she said instead of being on your cellphone walk to us and let us know. NOT WORKING NO WAIT UNTIL YOU GET OFF YOUR CELL PHONE THEN TELL US " RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE " NOT DOING YOUR JOB. not hard to walk to us and letting us know the Machine is down. Ok you would think that if there were a million customers waiting to be rung up you would have more than one check out teller when there are about 12 checkout stands! But that would be asking too much from this Safeway. Some morning I come here for a last minute buy (forgot my lunch or get some goodies for the co-workers), and I absolutely hate it! I always have to plan to be there at least 15 to 20 minutes early, but that's when I'm lucky. Most times its a last minute thing so I'm stuck and usually late for work. Their meat selection is not a selection at all, and their seafood section even worse! Many of the items are not stocked up, and there are always many empty spaces. The worker's here have no sense of customer service and I feel like they hate their jobs and are just going through the motions to get their weekly checks. read more

Horrible. Who would've thought it would be difficult to find things in a little store like this? The signs on the aisles need to be changed; it was hard to find anything. You might as well not even look at the aisle signs and just walk down every aisle. THEN I waited in line 10 minutes to buy 1 thing. Also, the parking lot is too narrow and busy on a Friday at 10:30am. Next time I'll drive a little bit farther and go to Target where the food is less expensive and I can find things! read more

My first non-restaurant review! I chose to do this one specifically because the thought always pops into my head when I'm here: "Why is there only one check-out lane open?" EVERY SINGLE TIME without fail, they have only one check out lane open and the line is loonnngggg. That may be a reason why I'm always dreading to go Safeway, especially when I'm on a time constraint. When I finally made it to the front, the cashier at the front was very friendly and didn't seem too stressed from the eyes staring at her in line, willing her to go faster. She's very friendly and seems to know a majority of the customer's names, which I think is nice. However, they really need to get those lanes open. Why have 8 cashier lanes if you're only going to use one? Poor management. read more

DONUTS! The only reason I came here one morning a few weeks ago. There doesn't seem to be too many places around here to get actual real american donuts. Safeway DELIVERED BIG TIME! They're not lying when they say this is the worst Safeway on the island. Unfortunately, it's my neighborhood Safeway so I have to deal. After seeing the revolution of Safeways such as the awesome renovation of Kapolei Safeway years ago...and more recently being in the Kapahulu Safeway which is a work of art...I can only wish that one day somebody decides to demolish this ugly duckling Safeway and rebuild it as a beautiful swan. I don't think that'll ever be a reality.... It serves its purpose for me...I buy a lot of my groceries here...only whatever is on sale, otherwise it's ridiculous. The big problem is the service. Sometimes the cashiers are extremely slow, inconsiderate, and inefficient. I've learned to avoid certain lines when I see who's behind the counter. Unfortunately, it's often the case, especially at night or certain times where there will be a ton of people ready to buy their goods and they only keep one line open. Crazy. It's my local grocer, but I don't see any reason why somebody would come here if they didn't live or work in the area. read more

The main reason we go here is because it is very convenient to where we live and is on the way home most of the time. This Safeway is very old and small compared to other Safeways on the island. Have a craving for pie or mochi after dinner? No sliced pie or mochi here. The donuts always look super old and unappetizing. The prices aren't very good considering you have Target and Sack' n 'Save down the street. This store comes complete with its own cast of many colors. There is the older check out man who comments on almost everything you buy, the super happy/stoned kid, the odd lady who likes to make random small talk (most of the time the same things) and occasionally the 1 or 2 "normal" cashiers. They love to ask if you need help out to your car when all you have is a 6-pack of beer. On some occasions they will have a random homeless guy at the door guest starring. read more

This Safeway is conveniently located in the Salt Lake Shopping Center. This is an older Safeway that has been around for years, so it is a little smaller and dated compared to the Safeway stores that are coming up now. That said there's still a decent selection you are able find almost anything you need from a grocery store. So far, every time I've gone to this store, there never seems to be more that 2 cashiers working, so depending on how busy it is, expect somewhat long lines when checking out. I wanted to update my contact info for my Safeway Club card, and the customer service worker was not helpful and had a major attitude as if she couldn't be bothered. However, the cashiers and floor workers are generally friendly and helpful. read more

As a brand, Safeway has a terrible reputation for being slow at the cash register and overpriced in the aisles here in Honolulu. This particular Safeway is no exception. The staff tries real hard, and the store is always very clean and well-stocked, even at unusual hours. The deli is delicious, and the folks working there follow safety guidelines and show their aloha. Alas, their individual efforts cannot overcome the chain's systemic problems. There are always too few folks working the register, and the canned or dry goods prices cannot compete with Target just a little ways down the road. 20120311, Sunday night @approx 10:30pm 6 people in front of me but this Safeway hardly ever has more than 1 register open WTF Cashier had to go back to 1 of the aisles to price check something & came back in a few min. Finally she went on the PA to ask for assistance up front. Another worker showed up, probably the shift manager, and instead of opening up another register, she sends the original cashier ON BREAK!!!!!! Mind you, this is as the line behind me was growing!! This Safeway SUCKS so freaking bad. All the workers are horrible at customer service. The lines move at turtle pace because its rare to have more than 2 registers open for some Fn reason. Carts are strewn about outside all over the damn parking lot while a few Safeway workers are smoking and joking. All the workers there are lacsidasical in nature and could give a shiet about helping you if you have a question. THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM SHOULD BE FIRED. Where the h3ll is Trump???? I am jealous of the Aikahi Park and Aiea Safeways. The shopping experience there, hell even the Pali Safeway, is a TRILLION times better than Salt Lake!!! Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

The Safeway I'm used to growing up is not the same as it is today. As the company got larger (it just bought out Chicago's Dominick's grocery store and locals are pissed off about it), customer service began to suck and the little details people liked slowly faded out to make way for major mass marketing changes everywhere Safeway does business (even the new logo schemes suck). I might be spoiled from enjoying large supermarkets in Chicago but this grocery store is tiny and the selection is limited compared to other Safeways on the island. The only thing going for it right now is its convenience for Salt Lake condos, parking is always available and there's an awesome, friendly staff. If you want greater variety, go to the larger Sack N Save near Aloha Stadium. It's a little cheaper, too. read more

I rarely go to this location anymore, unless it's an absolute emergency situation, or I'm tagging along with someone else. I used to come here quite often, though as of the late, the customer service has really gone down hill and the quality of some of the products isn't so great. The last time I went, which was in the last month, because I was tagging along, I found a package of ham that wasn't past it's freshness date, but it was horrid looking, as though someone had left it in a cart for hours, then it just got thrown back on the shelf with the others in the deli section, and one of the vegetable platters was still for sale after it's recommended date. o_0 And as I mentioned, the customer service is really sad. No one looks happy, and you're lucky if you can get a smile out of one of them. I won't go as far as to say they are rude, but they greatly lack the desire to assist. read more

This Safeway carries a lot of different products, good reasonable prices and the cashiers they do have are friendly and helpful. The problem is they don't have nearly enough of them working. Every Safeway I've ever been to has almost every lane in operation. At this one? I've rarely seen more than two. For them to open three, the lines have to be halfway to the back of the store. In a neighborhood where there are so many families with spouses, students, etc, I can't believe they would not be able to hire a few more cashiers. It can't possibly be a question of business; I see lots of customers there every time I go in. Not sure if this is a franchise decision or from corporation HQ, but whoever is responsible for this skeleton staff needs to put some meat on its bones. read more
