I used to make my own Turkey Brine, but I find using one of these pre-made Brine packets waaaaaaaaay easier! Happy Thanksgiving gang!

Bing! Bing! Bing! Any supermarket that has da gall to put up a Frrrrrrried Chicken Wing bar at the hot foods deli section will easily get a 5 star rating from Bruddah Fran!!! I'm known to cruise Safeway in Friday's, cuz Bruddah Fran digs da DEALAGES, but in my most recent adventures to the Hawaii Kai Safeway, I came across Safeway's Frrrrrrried Chicken Wing bar & decided to pick up a few wings for lunch. What can I say about the wing bar??? Da Frrrrrried Chicken Wing bar was nicely stocked, clean, & of course the wing bar had my two all time FAVORITE Frrrrrrried Chicken Wings - Da Salt & Vinegar Wings, and the Mango Habanero Wings!!! Had to pick between the two, so I mine as well get both, because making tough decisions like that can be too stressful for me! Buwahahahahaha! What can I say about the wings??? The Salt & Vinegar wings was outstanding! The wings were nice & crunchy with the right amount of seasoning to make your mouth pucker with joy! As for the Mango Habanero wings, if you like sweet & spicy, then this is the wing for you. I would say it would be best to get this wing made fresh, because if the wings were sitting in the sauce for too long, it make the wing texture soggy. I have gotten these wings from the deli dept., where the clerk made it fresh for me, and when I got the Mango Habanero wings fresh, the texture was excellent with the nice sweet & spicy taste. Ummmmmmmmmmm! Either way, both wings are excellent in my book, but if you're not into Frrrrrrried Chicken wings like Bruddah Fran, Safeway does offer an array of items you can buy fresh from da market!

This is the Safeway in Hawaii Kai. The store was ok. You can tell that it's not one of their newer stores. I was here the day before Christmas and they were out of a lot of items. The cheese section was depleted and the cereal that I was looking for was gone. I asked the stock guy and he told me that he brought out the last two boxes from the back earlier and someone bought them. I do love that they have a sit down area sectioned off for the Starbucks in the store. In town, they only have the kiosk for Starbucks. The sit down area is on the outside. I saw a lot of people converging in the center of the store. It turns out that all the Christmas candy was 90% off. That's right, 90% off. The Hershey's bags that are usually $5-$6 a bag was less than a dollar. I got seven bags for around $5. It was definitely the best deal in the whole store. They have a branch of the Hawaii State FCU in this place if you're a member.

SW Friday deals. 12/29/2023. Poke bowl $5. Deli ham $5# Maui chips 2 for $5

Store manager Dane is hard working, personable and friendly. Been here many times. Good layout of Store, easy to find items. Came here for $5 poke bowls, deli ham off the bone $5#, Maui chips 2/$5. Normally go to Costco in the shopping center next door, Hawai'i Kai. There are 6 self service check outs, which is very convenient. Parking lot is Normally busy. CVS, McDonald's, Bale, Texas 808 are in same shopping center

They have your typical grocery items that you would find anywhere else, however what I think makes them extra special is all their ready-to-eat meals. They have some amazing hot meals for you to choose from, as well as family platters. However, they are very popular for their affordable poke which I think is stellar. Especially considering that you would probably pay 5x more at any restaurant in Waikiki. During my time in Oahu, we made multiple trips to this location and always made sure to get a pound of poke. We also got some of the Foodland chips, which paired great with their poke. Also, I highly recommend getting their Foodland card which can get you some discounts on your purchase.

And they've got everything! It is widely regarded by locals and visitors as having some of the best grocery-store poke (like spicy ahi and shoyu varieties) sold deli-style by the pound. Unfortunately, we were not there for the poke. My wife was on a mission to find my son his fav bread- ube pandesal. And her personal fav- butter mochi. For the life of me, I couldn't find either or. But thanks to a staff member who offered to help, we secured the goods! And both my son and wife scored big-time. Not only did she help us locate our two essential products, but she also made some really good food recommendations for the future (as we were already stuffed from eating breakfast earlier). Overall, I was really impressed with my first time visiting. The grocery store is clean, well organized, and fully staffed! I can't wait to be in Hawaii again so that I can pay them a visit and try the famous poke!

I went to the Money Services counter, where I was told the fee to cash my check would be $8, which I was fine with. The associate tried twice to cash my check, but both attempts were denied. She told me she couldn't do the transaction and went off to lunch. I tried getting someone else to help me but he stated he was an operator not a manager. So her co-worker explained to me that it wasn't an issue with my identification. At first, I thought it might have been because the address on my passport wasn't current, so I provided another form of identification along with a piece of mail showing my name and mailing address. Unfortunately, that didn't make a difference. The associate explained that it may have been because it was my first time cashing a check of that amount at Walmart and suggested that I go directly to my bank instead. While I appreciated the associate's efforts in explaining it to me, the experience was still extremely disappointing. I had planned to use the money to buy groceries, but since I couldn't access my funds, I had to return everything I had picked out and leave empty-handed. It was a frustrating and discouraging end to an already long workday. I understand that policies and verification systems are in place for security, but I wish there had been a clearer explanation or an alternative solution to make it right with me. I was so disappointed, I just deposited the check through my own Chase mobile banking. A bank I haven't used in over a year and a half since I moved to Hawai'i. To make matters worse, the employees started discussing my situation in the corner in Tagalog as if I wasn't right there. I wish people didn't do that. Speak in another language thinking other people don't understand you. I speak Visaya, English, and Tagalog by the way. I was born in the Philippines and understand the language... It was just a very discouraging encounter. I walked out of Walmart trying not to sob because after two weeks of waiting for a paycheck, and not being able to go to the bank with my work hours, it's been incredibly difficult to have money in my pocket. I was really counting on Walmart to take care of me today. So, reluctantly, I took a picture of my check instead and deposited it through my mobile phone and now I have to wait days for it to go through. What a rough day.

And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed.
