The prices on their tags are not the same as the advertised weekly ad prices , even when you use the Safeway club member card. See photos of ads and then what was charged on the receipt. I feel sad for the seniors who are on a fixed income , rely on this one store in Hawaii Kai, and getting ripped off due to the lack of professionalism run by this store. Get it right! Update your computer system - stop using excuses! So tired of unacceptable customer service . If anyone know which government agency I can report this to, please let me know. Although not my favorite Safeway, I make a stop here for lunch sometimes to pick up a deli sandwich, grab turkey breast for my sandwich or make a stop for Bank Of Hawaii as it is located next to customer service. This Safeway has been around since my high school days, when I used to live in Hawaii Kai. It remains the same and needs a little renovation. This Safeway to me is smaller than the Safeway in town, I am not use to shopping here so I don't know where everything is. One thing that you must avoid if you don't have to shop at Safeway and if you can wait, avoid Fridays!! I heard from my co-workers that Fridays are crazy busy due to the 5.00 specials only on Fridays. I did shop here on one Friday and had to leave since I only have about 10 minutes to shop, due to my lunch break. My important tips for Safeway if you are new customer, sign up for the Safeway savings card, check the Midweek ads for weekly sales including 5.00 Fridays and a must is to sign up for "Just for U", you can load money savings deals, only offered on your card, special just for u additional savings, manufacturer coupons, and even free stuff. Always log in and check the offers weekly as new offers do pop up. The deli has delicious sandwich, Once I had a deal on my Just for U for 3.99 deli sandwich, I took advantage of this offer. After that ended, I get the sub of the week special. I believe it is 6.00 for the meal which consist of special of the week sandwich, bag of chips & drink. I like the variety of different sandwich available and you can customize just like Subway. I never had a problem with customer service at this location, cashier and managers are friendly! Besides the deli and Bank of Hawaii, Every time I shop here, I always have to pass thru and glance at the floral department to get to the deli or bank. This location has one of the best floral department. They have such pretty and colorful arrangements, it makes me happy. A few months ago, I purchased flowers for a co-worker's birthday, I decided to grab a bouquet of roses and asked the worker to add baby's breath and ribbon and she charged me a very reasonable amount, for doing this. I had such great service. If you need to do any floral purchase I recommend you stop at this Safeway. Jeeze what is it about Safeway and their willingness to hire people who have NO business working with the public? It seems like there is one in each store, and the HK store is no exception. Yesterday, I had to rent a carpet cleaner because my little Hoover decided to stop working. The lady behind the counter was SUPER nice, personable, we talked story a little and I was on my way. When I got home to figure out the machine, I inspected the tanks and noticed there was sand and debris in the dirty water tank. It didn't seem to be a problem - it IS the dirty water tank and not something to drink out of - so I rinsed it out a little and used the machine. I had actually already shampooed half or so of the bedroom with my Hoover, so it was already really well vacuumed and half clean but the water uptake had stopped working, hence the rental. I cleaned just the bedroom with this Safeway Rug Doctor because a) it weighs 1000 lbs and b) the next day the Hoover decided to work again, for the remaining room. I again rinsed out the RD's dirty water tank, this time outside and flushing it out outside with the hose for a good 4-5 minutes. There was still a little sand at the bottom - my guess is that the previous user spilled their frappuccino in their rental car and used this machine to clean up that AND all the buckets of sand they don't bother brushing off their feet - and it passed inspection when they returned it. You can't just rinse out this tank though, because the hole is on the side, not the bottom, so sand would never come out. I'm sure anyone who's used this new model of RD knows this. And apparently everyone at Safeway knows this except the different woman behind the counter today. She asked if it was all clean. Being an honest person, I said yes, but there's about a tbsp or less of sand at the bottom of the dirty water tank, and it was there when I received the machine. She STARED at me for a good 30 seconds, and seethed, "It's supposed to be clean." I said, well it IS clean, except for the sand which was already there yesterday. She continued to stare at me and said she'd have to charge me for cleaning it. She didn't even look at the tank! We went back and forth and I had to defend myself - which should not happen in customer service, especially since she hadn't even inspected it herself! She continued to stare me down, looking like she was ready to rip my throat out, telling me that policy is they have to charge me and that's that. So I pulled the tank off and showed her the small bit of sand, the side hole which makes it impossible to really flush out the debris, told her everything I did to clean it AND the fact that I hardly even used it, and she continued to stare me down which literally was the truth because she was quite a bit taller than me, God almighty I've never felt so uncomfortable in a store which supposedly serves the public. Finally she did a Regan eye-roll into the back of her head, ran my CC for the deposit refund, and barked, "Sign." Incredible. Had it not been for the really nice helper the day before, I'd be done with this Safeway too. read more

I often shop in the evening because it's so much less crowded but the shelves are often empty especially in the milk section. I usually have to find someone to check if they have more stock in the back which most of the time they do. Tonight they had a really good sale on organic milk but they were out of the whole milk. I couldn't find anyone to help me so I went to the produce section and asked the person there and he said he couldn't help because he worked in the produce section. I took a different milk and proceeded to the cashier. This cashier always seems like I'm inconveniencing her when I come up to her station. There were no other customers in line. I asked her if someone could help me so she called someone to come out. He checked in the back and the milk was out of stock. I went back to the cashier and asked for a rain check. She told me she couldn't give me one because she would have to see the product. I asked if I could go back and take a picture of the sign so she could write a rain check, and she said no, she would have to see the product. We stood there for a minute. Then she said the guy that helped me would have to write up the rain check. She then asked if I wanted to ring up my groceries, and I responded that yes, I want to ring up my groceries, but I also want the rain check. She rang up the groceries and called the guy back out. He came out and looked up the product on his phone and said the sale is on for another 10 days so do I really need the rain check? I said no and I left. I don't understand the big deal about a rain check. The cashiers at Longs do it all the time when they run out of sale stock. The whole experience left me frustrated. The store was empty but I felt I was really inconveniencing them. There are friendly cashiers and staff who are helpful but obviously not all. And they need to keep the shelves better stocked generally. Unfortunately they are the only grocery store in Hawaii Kai. read more

I always shop at Safeway, I'm probably there at least 3 times a week. For the most part I'm very satisfied with prices and the products that they offer. My complaint is with some of the cashiers. Like others have mentioned some of them act as if you are inconveniencing them, with straight faces and poor attitudes. It makes me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I always try to avoid them if I can and look for the cashiers that are always pleasant and helpful. But sometimes you have no choice and have to go to them. Just recently I had a cashier named Jill She didn't say anything and a very unhappy look on her face. I had my own bags so I helped bag one of my bags and she did the other. Most cashiers try to look at your items and place them in the bag carefully. I have NEVER repacked a bag that they had done. But I saw how she rushed and carelessly put my items in the bag and left a few things out for me to do. The bag wasn't full and they were small items so it wasn't because she thought that I didn't want them bagged like toilet paper or a large box of soda. I think she felt like she had "helped" enough. I looked in the bag and saw that the oysters that I bought that were in a styrofoam tray and wrapped with plastic wrap had ripped and now there was a large hole in it and it was sideways. So I took a few things out and tried to place them in the bag where the oysters wouldn't spill onto the rest of my groceries or in the bag. There was an another customer behind me waiting to be rung so I didn't say anything and tried to hurry. The cashier saw me and said " oh sorry.." I just said "oh, it's okay" and didn't complain about the way she pretty much just threw my things in with no care or explained why I did it. I just tried to rearrange it quickly and be on my way. As soon as I started to leave I heard her and the man behind me start laughing and shaking their head. Like they were saying "some people.. ". That was so rude and unprofessional!! I wanted to go back and let them know why I had to rearrange some of my items. But it wasn't worth it.. That was such a bad experience and made me feel so uncomfortable and upset. The new improved Safeway has opened and is better than ever, more selections and more space. Like a treasure hunt I have noticed each Safeway has their own unique selection for their neighborhood tastes. With less organic grocery stores near by, this store seems to have a larger selection which is always a plus in my book. I like the new cut fruit and veggies option for quick healthy meals, just wish there were harder to prepare and more interacting veggies like parsnip or beets included. Only complaint is we have noticed our fresh juices going bad faster than before. I actually bought a Govinda's pineapple juice from the nearby Foodland, Whole Foods and Safeway on the same day and in that order they were freshest (Foodland) to least fresh, actually even alcoholic in a day (Safeway). Yet I live closest to Safeway so even a shorter unrefridegerated travel time did not benefit. After having the same experience with 4 more bottles of pineapple juice and my harmless harvest fresh coconut water becoming alcoholic too soon, I do not buy fresh juices from them much anymore since I do trust their new refrigerator set up for them unfortunately. read more

2 stars for convenience of location, store renovations, and the lady who works the self checkout area- she is always hustling making sure people get in and out of self checkout in a timely manner. Negative 3 stars because on several occasions now I have bought products and come to realize they are expired by 10-15 days. Most recently, I purchased a couple of yogurts. The next morning I went to take a bite out of one of the yogurts and it was horribly sour. Come to find out it expired TWELVE DAYS AGO. If I would have written this review pre-renovations, I prob would have given 2 stars, but since the renovations everything has improved! First.. I love the organic and fresh meat options... it's wide open and just aesthetically pleasing. The lines used to be ridiculously long before... I feel like they were always short or something.. or just didn't care that there was 10+ people in one line... but now, with the implementation of the self check out - and additional staff, I can zip in and out of there even after work which seems to be their busiest time. Tips: their bread is baked fresh daily in the bakery. I love snagging a warm baguette. Their cupcakes are hella cheap and so delish, they are my go to for the kids bday parties. I've shopped here a lot in the past 6 months or so and have usually found everything I need. My shopping is almost always along the perimeter, so lots of produce and meats which have been just fine. I've even bought poke here which tasted pretty good, although the fresh fish definitely had a better texture than the previously frozen. I've also found fresh taro leaves and other produce here that I wouldn't normally expect to find outside of a farmers market or speciality shop. I do find the prices a bit high, but that's probably a function of being in Hawaii, the Covid supply chain crisis, and inflation caused by the central bank's insanely loose fiscal policy for the past decade. Pretty sure Safeway can't be blamed for those. At the end of the day, it's a Safeway. It's not the fanciest place, but for stocking up on essentials and even some harder to find items it does great. I've also always found the staff friendly and helpful, and the store itself kept clean. I could see parking being an issue unless you can make it here at off-peak times, but as I presume Safeway is a tenant and not the owner, not sure there's a lot it can do about that. read more

My wife bought a platter of sushi from the Sushi counter at the Keahole Safeway for my birthday. It was just fantastic; beyond expectations. We only had the immediate family (6), and we couldn't even come close to finishing all the great nigiri sushi, sashimi, and dragon rolls on the platter. Fish was fresh, well cut--just the right thickness. Rice was firm and did not fall apart. I loved it. I would recommend this sushi counter, near the deli and meats at the Keahole Safeway without reservation. As everyone else has mentioned, this store is getting renovated. It's great to see yet another Starbucks in Hawaii Kai and an expansion of the Safeway deli. Good selection of vegetarian stuff like tofurkey and vegan ciao cheese. Woohoo! The store baked sourdough bread is so goooood sometimes it's even warm when I come. Some products are really expensive but things get expensive when you ship them across the entire Pacific Ocean what can you do. ? The line up system by the checkout could be improved. With covid and social distancing it's unclear where people are lining up because it goes into the aisles and if you and someone are waiting for the same line in adjacent aisles....well you can imagine it gets awkward when you both try to go dump all your stuff on the conveyor at the same time. Just ordered a couple sandwiches from the deli and I just wanted to say that this young man named Josh was fantastic. He was very personable and social and made the best sandwiches for everybody and everyone was so happy anyways, just an absolutely great guy all around he definitely deserves a major promotion!! I went to Safeway on Saturday and noticed a new sign hanging from the ceiling. It pretty much said they would open a new check stand if three people are standing in a line. For all the other times that I've been to this Safeway, it has always been crowded. Like the line is so long it backs up into the aisles. I went to Safeway on Tuesday to buy two items and there were about six people ahead of me in the line. It took so long just to buy two things. Kind of frustrated and disappointed. When I went on Saturday, the lines weren't too bad. But it's that weekday line that's long. Hopefully they'll start opening more lines like the sign says so people can get their groceries faster. read more

I moved to Hawaii Kai from town recently (I know Hawaii Kai is "Town" but come on, not really). I know everyone is moving away from East Oahu closer to downtown. I feel like I live so far out now. TBH, on the weekends, going further than Aina Haina seems like a long hike and even Kahala Mall feels like a trip to the other side of the world. What does any of this have to do with Safeway??? Safeway allows me to stay in Hawaii Kai. The bakery is great. I often go in the morning to buy a half dozen energy bar bagels. The fruit tarts are great too. Lox of Bagels is better for bagels and the pies are better at Kulu Kulu, but this is good enough that I'm not going into town for something better. This place is always well stocked and the staff is welcoming. Yes, it is more expensive than Times and Foodland. But I would have to go all the waaaay to Aina Haina or Kahala to save some money. For me time is more important than money and I'd rather use that time to hang out at Sandy's and watch people get wiped out. read more

This review is for the poke only. I used to live around the corner from this Safeway in Hawaii Kai, and would frequently stop by just to get their poke! Just take a look at the attached photo of the ahi shoyu poke that I posted on Yelp. The photo speaks for itself! The sashimi is about as fresh as you would get at any local fish market, but the ingredients are what makes up the poke. Just enough shoyu, onions and overall "kick", but not too much. I have never found a better poke than the one served right here at the Safeway in Hawaii Kai! In addition to the ahi shoyu poke, they also have many variations and styles of poke to choose from! I've never been able to go to Safeway in Hawaii Kai with a list and be able to fill 50 % of it. They are always out of Milk which is a staple. Today all they had was milk that expires today and selling it at a discount. They couldn't remove it from their shelves which is what other markets would do because they had no other milk to sell! When we buy poke at 18.00 a pound and ask for extra shoyu in it they charge 18.00 a pound for the extra shoyu that cost pennies. I asked a produce clerk if they had Alfalfa sprouts and he said " whatever's there is there,". I couldn't find any sprouts whatsoever. Even if it's the only grocery store in Hawaii Kai I will no longer shop there. I would much rather drive to Foodland in Ains Haina. read more

I'll admit, back in the day I wasn't a fan of Safeway. Growing up my family always patronized Foodland in Hawaii Kai. As I got older, my family started to go to Safeway, and slowl but surely we cut Foodland out of our lives. The interior is nice, the staff is friendly and the selections is always good. And now that Safeways has the deal match we love this place even more. The only piece of advice I have for you as a consumer, check your receipt afterwards. My father had a few incidents (sorry, I hate that word because it sounds horrible but I don't know any other word to use) where he had a deal match but Safeway didn't update their computers so my father was shorted a little cash. I just moved to this area from Kaneohe and have been getting used to the new area. I haven't shopped inside much but it's been nice.. What I've been doing most is curbside pickup. I LOVE this service and really need it right now.. It helps tremendously. The young man, Tyler, that has been working this section is fantastic! He puts care into selecting the groceries, being incredibly on top of it, communicates well ( read: this translates into excellent above and beyond service) and reaches out via phone if there's any issues with the order, etc. Tyler's prompt friendly service makes curbside pickup a must in my routine now...he's such a hard working employee, personable sincere prompt and friendly. I have complete confidence and am so glad I started doing this because it saves so much time which I really need right now. Under pre-COVID circumstances I would rate this store two stars for the mostly slow, apathetic service (with the exception of a few excellent employees). I was very impressed to see that this store has implemented many measures to provide shoppers a safe experience-carts and baskets sanitized, distance markers at lines, etc. And the past two times I visited the cashier did an excellent job of checking customers out relatively quickly while still following infection control procedures. The only thing that keeps this store from being 5 stars now is that in spite of implementing all of those measures, management is doing little to ensure that customers comply. So in spite of the very large red arrows with clear labels stating "one way", the majority of customers were totally disregarding those instructions and barging down the aisles the wrong way. For people who do read and follow instructions, this creates a worse situation than if the signs weren't there, because we are not expecting to come face to face all of a sudden with people and their carts from the wrong direction. It's not Safeway's fault that customers can't read or willfully disregard those huge and obvious signs. But I think the store management should try to find solutions to encourage shoppers to be compliant. Still, I am grateful to the employees who are working so hard to provide us products to remain healthy and comfortable. And I am impressed that the quality of service seems to have improved in spite of the COVID crisis. read more

This Safeway branch is pretty similar to most that you'll come across. Fairly friendly service, good food, clear prices, clean store, and decent parking and access. It's a nice neighborhood grocery store. My fiancé and I have gone here several times together. She actually lives like 3 minutes away, so she comes here about once a week. What we have both noticed is that there are a couple employees who happen to have a sour attitude every time we visit. We feel sorry for them, because it looks like they work their behinds off. But still, they aren't making us any happier to be there giving our business to them. Also, we go in a lot for milk and find the shelves almost bare. I don't understand why it's so hard to keep rice made for the poke bowls. I also don't understand why the price for the poke bowl changes depending on who makes your poke bowl. There is a VERY ACCOMMODATING young man named Josh who went out of his way to make this delicious sandwich for me!! They didn't have the ingredients for the 1st sandwich I wanted, and the next choice didn't look very promising either, but Josh went and sliced me up some fresh smoked turkey, and made this sandwich just exactly how I wanted it!! A shopping we will go... a shopping we will go... hi ho... ahhh shoots!! Stuck at the long lines at check out?? REALLY?? I hate to say it, but Foodland has better service. We come here cause there's some things we jus can't find at Foodland. If Foodland had everything we'd drive the extra 2-3 miles to Aina Haina instead. The check out after work is horrendous!! They usually only have an average of 3 check stands open and lines down the aisles. Seriously?? You guys have what... 8+ check stands and only 3 open during dinner time?? I kinda wonder if any management reads these reviews cause people's complaints have gone on for a long while now. Someone posted about a year ago about a sign "3's a crowd" and they'd open more check stands if there's more than 3 in line. Not even!! I think I saw that sign just the other day and they still had long lines down the aisles. There's even times you watch the cashiers take their time with the customer that's in front of them. Seriously?? We try our hardest to avoid "rush hour traffic" with this place. Wifey usually has a more level head than me, but when she's frustrated it's bad. Avoid this place after work or on holidays. I give this place 2 stars cause they do have a pretty wide selection in almost everything. If Safeway management actually reads this... Everyone knows that Hawaii Kai is a paradise on its own that is just 20-25 minutes out of Waikiki... This Safeway has everything that you need and hope for in your niche of paradise. I've always loved the sandwiches at the Deli but this last visit made me love it even more! Not only was the sandwich made with incredibly fresh and delicious ingredients but the worker crafting the sandwich was friendly and generous! Our sandwich was well worth the price and he made it so neat and easy to eat. Jenesus made perhaps, the tastiest sandwich I've ever had at Safeway! If you are ever contemplating a meal in Hawaii Kai, don't discount the sandwiches here - it will be a mistake to do so! read more

I do the majority of my shopping at Foodland but come to Safeway Hawaii Kai for the bakery - freshly sliced sourdough bread, blueberry muffins, and peanut butter cup cookies ... also LOVE the little section near the door with seasonal items and misc. books, dvds, & toys for sale. read more

Sadly the first rating for this store will be a low rating because of my recent experience shopping there. I shopped there recently in search for some picnic items to take to the beach and saw that our favorite beer was out of stock, so I caught the nearest safeway worker in passing to help possibly check in the back. (I saw my husband do this once before and the Manoa branch nicely checked the back for him and brought out a cold 12-pack for him.) So this worker (I believe her name tag read "Monique") was quite rude with mumbling that they were out, rolled her eyes, huffed and went on her way.
